Birth year in our signature lines??
Mods,
I was posting on one of the threads and I posted the following:
One stat that my friend mentions often around here is that AGE plays a big role. We have these cool signature lines, but the only place for our age is in the more detailed information on our bios. My friend and I would love if the ladies birth years were right up there with the DX. Maybe I should ask the mods because if someone is 40, 60 or 70, so much of treatment decisions can differ.
Just wanted to throw this out there. It can be frustrating sometimes where someone is talking about their decisions or their MOs treatment plan and that person is 30 or 70. Not all treatment is created equal and if we are reading through posts, it's confusing unless we ask the person directly.
Just a thought :-)

Thanks Rocky, we'll consider this!

Rocky,
I've often thought the same thing. Age is part of the picture. It's not the biggest piece but it does give us a reference point. There are threads where someone will seek advice considering treatments, medications, surgeries and it does help to know if you're responding to a 30 year old anticipating her fertility options, breastfeeding, etc or a 70 year old post-menopausal grandmother or someone inbetween.
Of course there are so many other factors that are often not revealed that give me pause when responding to someone. -
Think this is a great idea. Make it optional just like the rest of the info so its still a member's choice to display it or not.
-
I've often thought this. I am always looking at people's signatures and comparing their diagnoses and treatment to mine. It'd be helpful to know also whether they're a similar age to me.
-
Thanks mods for looking into this. If I get some time, I will post this in some of the groups that I participate in.
-
This is the reason that my year of birth is in my avatar name! Great idea.
-
Yes, I wonder too. I'm in the "over 70, menopausal grandmother" group.
-
I was dx at age 69...it makes a big difference....i chose no 5 yr.meds only cause of the age factor.
-
I, too, think this is a great idea. It would certainly help in advice situations and if someone doesn't want to show, they don't have to.
-
I agree with Rockym on posting the age or birth year as it makes a huge difference in some women's treatment choices and decisions. I was diagnosed at 53, they kept telling me I was young for a breast cancer patient (which was about the only thing that made me smile at the time.) My neighbor was 72 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer 6 years ago. Her Drs. debated whether to give her chemotherapy or not and decided not on account of her age. It may also help us understand if the side effects we are experiencing are from treatment or, just maybe, because we have reached a certain age.
-
Rather that birth age wouldn't it be better to have dx age?
-
I agree with chrissyb. Age at diagnosis, in my opinion, is more relevant. I put mine in my signature line.
Good suggestion, Rockym. Love all you ladies; I'm always learning something new on these boards.
-
Lee64, I was about to ask you where you put your age in your sig line as I only see the dx. Then I realized that your BCO name is Lee64, so that tells me you are either 64 years old or you were born in 1964. No sure which :-).
chrissyb, age at dx would be good too. It would serve the same purpose since I would see your dx is 2003 and if you said you were say 40... I would also know you are now almost 50. I just thought birth year is a good number that people can use and not have to think about. I was 46 when I was dx'ed, but eventually I'll forget that age, however, I will not forget I was born in 1964 :-).
Thanks ladies for chiming in! I really didn't like the new format change of BCO at first, but now it's great and I think it could be improved with birth year or dx age.

We have this on our wishlist for a future site update, and in the meantime adding your age at diagnosis to your signature will give that info to others if you choose to share the information (go to My Profile at the top of any page, then the Settings tab, edit your signature, and be sure it's marked Public).

My age is none of your business. It can be used against us in online fraud too. It had better never be forced in sig lines or that's the day I am gone.
I'm in my early 50s and you can research me to find the exact age if you want. You can also PM people and ask them.
-
Age at dx would be helpful for those that don't mind posting it, but posting a whole birthdate could be dangerous. Date of birth is the first question they ask to find me at my treatment center.
The age thing has more to do with pre or post menopause for treatment choices right? Maybe just have a 'code' for that to put in our dx lines.
-
Looked like a good suggestion as an option which was suggestion.
No one is forced to reveal anything in a signature line ... some folks don't even have signature lines. Can't imagine the site would start forcing any revelations concerning age any more than diagnosis ... which is extremely personal information actually.
As for age at diagnosis ... since diagnosis date is an option, adding the option of age would allow someone to do the math if they cared to or not as the case may be if someone chose to reveal both.
Different strokes ....
I'm 49 btw.

No one is suggesting that showing age at diagnosis (or age, for that matter) would be required in any way. We strongly encourage members to protect their identifying information on this site, and online in general.
-
Thank you mods! I protect my identity by not using my real name ;-). As for my birth year of 1964, that doesn't tell anyone anything except that I am 48 this year and I was dx'ed at either 46 or 47 if someone looks at my 6/13/2011 date.
CoolBreeze, you must not have read this thread well... Birth year or age at dx is to better communicate with each other. This has to do with ladies perhaps opting out of certain treatments when they are 70 and asking for advise versus the same person at 40. Since we have no way of knowing how old someone is unless they tell us or we ask, it makes communication that much harder.
This was only a suggestion.

I totally agree! I do think age can be a huge factor in decision making. Not only in menopausal issues (anti-hormonals) but surgery, chemo and rads and so many other related concerns.
I do see some people may have it on their profile if you click on their name. I think the entire internet has potential for fraud, not just if our age is listed on BCO. I am sure it would be optional, but nice if just birth year or age had a place somewhere on signature line/Dx area.
I find it interesting how we talk about so many private things here (mastectomies, nipples or lack there of, reconstruction, chemo side effects ect.) and I think age is not that difficult to disclose (at least for me at this point!)
Thanks Rocky for bringing it up and thanks mods for being open to new ideas.
Sara
PS I am 50

sara, nice to see you again! I noticed if we put our birth year in the profile alone, it doesn't work :-(. I don't want to lie about my month and day. Either way, I agree, something on the sig. line would be obvious. You are so funny in regard to our nipples, etc. At this point, who would be shy about their age? I'm just glad I'm still here at 48 and not 6 feet under ;-)
-
Not sure what the Hoopla is about. People are already free to write in their age at dx. I have privacy concerns too.Yes, it would not be required, but when people have the opportunity of entering personal information they frequently do so without assessing the consequences.
-
Rockym,
I was 64 when I was diagnosed and, try as I might, I don't think I will ever forget it. I don't know how listing age of diagnosis would reveal anything that could be used fraudulently; maybe I am missing something. Totally agree that it should not be required.
-
No hoopla, just an idea. I see very few people, if any, who put their age at dx or birth year in their sig lines. Nothing is ever required on our bios, but I did find that it was either put my entire birth date in or nothing. I wasn't able to just put my birth year in and I would have no problem with that. When someone is asking advise or describing something they are going through, I think it would be a nice piece of information to see and not have to search through their bio before answering.
Lee, even though you are not 1964 like me :-), I am glad you are giving your opinion. You started on this crummy path about 7 months before I did and I hope you are doing well now. Did you do chemo with 2/6 nodes?
-
I have added my dx age to my signature line. I have no problem telling anyone.
-
Lee and Rocky I totally agree with you. I think it is just one more piece of information and may help someone relate to someone else's diagnosis/situation even more. I am not thinking that by reveling my age, fraudulent activity is any more of a risk.
-
Rockym
I did have chemo and radiation: 4 ACT, 12 taxol, and 34 radiation treatments. I had LVI as well as extracapsular extension. I will be on Arimidex (generic) for 5 years; haven't had a problem with it so far.
Good luck to everyone on this "journey".
-
I put my birth year in the space where it asks for city and state. I'll try that on for size for a bit, but of course it doesn't help me when I read other's posts. Hey, that may be a good spot for it too. Name, city, state (if you like) and under that birth year for those who would like to add that information. Just a thought.
-
I added my birth year next to my name! I think that doing that, would be the easiest way .
