Momine - they didn't say when it would be generally available. It would eliminate the necessity of colonoscopies unless the test was positive.

Significantly, The Economist is a conservative publication, and its editorial buys into some of the fallacies the Romney-ites say about Obama, such as that Obama attacks Romney for his wealth. Total bumkum. Conservatives always think they are being attacked for wealth.

That aside, this is an interesting part of the endorsement coming from a conservative (but not fact-addled) magazine:

Yet far from being the voice of fiscal prudence, Mr Romney wants to start with huge tax cuts (which will disproportionately favour the wealthy), while dramatically increasing defence spending. Together those measures would add $7 trillion to the ten-year deficit. He would balance the books through eliminating loopholes (a good idea, but he will not specify which ones) and through savage cuts to programmes that help America’s poor (a bad idea, which will increase inequality still further). At least Mr Obama, although he distanced himself from Bowles-Simpson, has made it clear that any long-term solution has to involve both entitlement reform and tax rises. Mr Romney is still in the cloud-cuckoo-land of thinking you can do it entirely through spending cuts: the Republican even rejected a ratio of ten parts spending cuts to one part tax rises. Backing business is important, but getting the macroeconomics right matters far more.

The Economist is an English publication. Its views on taxation would be shared by most European conservatives. Unfortunately, the American right would never back the preceding paragraph.

Alexandria, yeah for boring! Pip, loved the wedding pictures! Hope you're still taking it easy, E/Scoot! Catching up on 10 pages on this thread. Was in boston for the weekend which turned into nearly a week with flights home cancelled several times! Fortunately I was with friends. We were lucky in Boston and at home in MD with no damage and no power outages. The scenes of the story's destruction in New Jersey and New York are hard to fathom. Just heartbreaking.

Latest update on FEMA's efforts in Sandy.

The following message is being sent on behalf of the Deputy Administrator.

    Team,

I started out today in the Region II RRCC seeing the good work that our employees are doing supporting some of the hardest hit states and meeting with members of Congress. I then headed to Hoboken where I met with survivors, the mayor, fire chief, and other local officials. While many challenges remain, I know that you are working hard to address the needs of the survivors.

More than 3,200 of you are deployed, and many more of you will be there in the coming days. The Administrator directed us today that our priorities are 4Ps: power, pumps, points of distribution (pods), and people (survivors). In addition to working to pump water out of the New York tunnels, the whole community is actively restoring power to 4.4 million people. The Power Restoration Task force is up and running, coordinating the movement of generators, crews, and high volume pumps into the affected area.

There are significant needs across the impacted area with 15,863 survivors currently in shelters and 33,147 registrations for individual assistance today. We are increasing our presence by ensuring that supplies are available at points of distribution and meeting survivors where they are through our community relations teams. Last night, I visited a shelter and the survivors' stories remind us that we must continue to move quickly, leaning forward and being creative to ensure that we, as a whole community, are meeting the needs of all those seeking assistance.

Those of you who are not deployed are also supporting the survivors. You may be performing mission essential functions back at headquarters or the regions, or taking on additional work for someone who is deployed. Your hard work and flexibility is also appreciated.

Thank you again for your service,

Hi cp418, interesting piece.  I think we need to get healthcare for more people and control costs.  I don't believe that Romney's plan would do much to control costs and would leave too many people uninsured.  Obamacare didn't go as far as I'd like but I feel it is a better start.

I ran across a couple of interesting little games - the first is where you can make the choices you would prefer and see if you could make President Obama's tax plan add up (it was pretty easy for me):

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/wp/2012/11/01/interactive-make-president-obamas-tax-plan-add-up/

This next one is to try to make Romney's tax plan add up (I found it impossible, I just could never cut enough):

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/wp/2012/10/31/interactive-make-mitt-romneys-tax-plan-add-up/

Edited to add: You have to scroll past the article to get to the game, although reading the article is helpful.

More from Margaret and Helen, as in "Let's Vote Mitt off the Island":

Margaret, with a natural disaster as big as Sandy, chances were pretty good that a Republican foot was going to end up in a mouth declaring that God was punishing liberals in blue states.  Imagine my surprise when instead Governor Chris Christie decided to put partisan politics aside and work with the President to help citizens in need.  I wonder if other Republicans were paying attention?

Unfortunately they were, but the lesson was clearly lost on them.  Many suggested that Christie has eyes for a Presidential run in 2016 which can’t happen if Romney wins.  Others offered that Christie was seeking revenge for not being selected as the Vice Presidential candidate.

And our favorite big-footed gal suggested that Christie “is hoping to use Obama to plug a dike.”  Do I really have to attribute that quote to Ann Coulter or could you just tell by the fifth-grade mentality?

But in the ultimate pot meets kettle moment, Rush Limbaugh called Christie “fat and a fool” saying the New Jersey Governor “doesn’t know what he is talking about.”   Oh Rush Limbaugh you fat, fool – heal thyself.

The Republicans are upset, of course, because one of their own was breaking ranks and actually suggesting that Obama isn’t the devil.  And to make it worse, Obama was showing the country how a well run government can and should handle a crisis which only reminds Republicans of just how bad the last Republican President had been.

But never fear.  The Republican candidate for President would not be denied his moment to shine and prove himself “presidential”.  While the Christie-Obama love fest was going on, Mitt Romney took the opportunity to show what kind of President he would be:

"I remember once we had a football field at my high school. The field was covered with rubbish and paper goods from people who’d had a big celebration there at the game. And there was a group of us there assigned to clean it up. And I thought, ‘how are we going to clean up all the mess on this football field?’ There were just a few of us. And the person responsible for organizing the effort said, ‘Just line up along the yard lines. You go between the goal line and the 10-yard line, and the next person between the 10 and 20, and just walk down and do your lane. And if everybody cleans their lanes, we’ll get it done.”

Margaret, I bet Mitt made a spectacular Prom King.  And if I was thinking about putting on a show in the barn…   Oh, who the hell am I kidding?  Mitt Romney is a moron.  If  I had my way, we'd vote him off the island.   He is dishonest as the day is long, and he will say anything to become president. And while those remarks might cause some to label me a partisan during this time of bi-partisan unity, you might be surprised just how bi-partisan my statement actually is:

“Mitt Romney will lie to you to become President and he will lie to you when he becomes President… Mitt Romney will do and say anything to become President. Anything." – Newt Gingrich

"I don't know how to respond to Mitt Romney because his position may change tomorrow." - John McCain

And Mike Huckabee on Mitt Romney - "If a man's dishonest to get a job, he'll be dishonest on the job."

Here’s hoping that the east coast rapidly recovers from the most recent tragedy.  And here’s to hoping Obama gets reelected so that American can recover from the tragedy that was the last Republican presidency.  I mean it.  Really.

    Welcome cp!

The Medpage Today article that talks about Romney focusing on cost controls is misleading. Costs will go down if fewer people are insured, certainly. The article also quotes Michael Tanner, an arch-libertarian and well known foe of Social Security and Medicare. Finally, the tax incentives for employers to offer insurance is actually a pro-business policy that has been supported by GOP and Dem administrations alike.

Sisters IF YOU AGREE may I have some help in this?

I am trying to get BCO to create a forum for people who live with bc and with a major comorbidity. The mods say they already have a forum for that - but it is one for BOTH comorbidities AND mixed types of BC. Apples and oranges as far as I am concerned. Anyway, follow the thread below and comment if you care to. I think BCO really needs a place where people with bc and other serious illnesses can share their experiences. Our treatment decisions often have to be very different. I don't think it's fair on people with mixed bc to share a forum with us, as their situation is also unique:

You can always count on Margaret and Helen.  Good ole' plain kitchen table common sense.  I would love to see them and Romney in a face to face.  I'm sure there would be so much sputtering and buts going on.

    Go UAW -- about time.

Sunflowers.....when I read such well-written articles I find myself amazed that anyone but a really total hard-line Republican would even consider voting for someone like Robme.  Mitty is the total epitome of an extremely bad snake-oil salesman.  Of course, I've come to realize that many of the Regressives don't seem to care that they look like they are dumber than a mud fence as they stand up and cheer for someone who has no morals what-so-ever if it can't result in some sort of personal gain.

I am always deeply refreshed by those who have the backbone to SPELL it out and I do think in the long run --- and away from any spotlight, in the quiet of their own hearts, people will not vote for a man so deeply lacking in obvious presidential principles.

Key 2012 Endorsements Of President Obama For Reelection

    November 2, 2012

    ByJack Watkins

As we approach the final few days of the hotly contested 2012 Presidential Campaign, here are lists and links which reflect many of the rich, famous and influential in America and which presidential candidate they endorse. What is noteworthy is that President Obama has recently gained several key endorsements of widely respected moderate Republicans…many of whom have not only praised the President’s leadership—but also, have been openly critical of the extreme direction of the far-right, Tea Party-controlled Republican Party.

    Endorsements for President Obama

Here are just some of my personal favorites…the full list (above link) and categories are impressive indeed!

    Political and Business/Economy:

    1. New York City Mayor,Michael Bloomberg: A MODERATE, INDEPENDENT, ONE-TIME REPUBLICAN and billionaire business icon.
    2. General Colin Powell: WIDELY-RESPECTED MODERATE REPUBLICAN, ex-Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff & Secretary-of-State.
    3. Charlie Crist: INDEPENDENT/MODERATE REPUBLICAN, former Florida Governor
    4. Larry Pressler: MODERATE REPUBLICAN, former-Senator, South Dakota, and a Vietnam Veteran
    5. Lincoln Chafee: MODERATE REPUBLICAN-INDEPENDENT, former Senator, Rhode Island
    6. Bill Clinton (Video): our most popular, living ex-President.
    7. Richard Clarke: highly-respected former U.S. National Coordinator for Security, Infrastructure Protection and Counter-Terrorism under Republican and Democratic administrations.
    8. Bill Gates: Microsoft Founder and CEO
    9. Warren Buffett: CEO, Berkshire Hathaway
    10. Paul Krugman: 2008 Nobel Prize Winner for Economics

Newspaper Endorsements - Here are eleven of the biggest by circulation:

    1. The New York Times
    2. The Washington Post
    3. The Los Angeles Times
    4. The Chicago Tribune(Their first endorsement, ever, of a Democratic presidential nominee!)
    5. The Detroit Free Press
    6. The Philadelphia Inquirer
    7. The Denver Post
    8. The Plain Dealer(Cleveland)
    9. Star-Tribune(Minneapolis-St. Paul)
    10. Tampa Bay Times
    11. The Economist

Scientific Community: Note: I omitted a shorter list of scientists, as it is lengthy and they may not be as publicly well-known. Given the most recent endorsement by Mayor Bloomberg, however, and his interest in the threat of global warming, which factored into his decision amidst the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, the full list of scientists endorsing President Obama is indeed an impressive read! (seelink)

    Organized Labor (Partial List):

    1. AFL-CIO (American Federation of Labor – Congress of Industrial Organizations
    2. AFSCME (American Federation of State, County and municipal Employees)
    3. AFT (American Federation of Teachers)
    4. SEIU (Service Employees International Union)
    5. American Nurses Association
    6. International Association of Firefighters
    7. Communications Workers of America
    8. American Federation of Government Employees
    9. American Postal Workers Union
    10. International Brotherhood of Teamsters

The Arts & Entertainment (partial list):

    1. Aaron Sorkin: Writer, Director and Producer
    2. Deepak Chopra: Physician and Author
    3. Stephen King: Novelist
    4. Toni Morrison: Author
    5. Bruce Springsteen: Singer, Songwriter
    6. Barbra Streisand: Singer, Actress and Film Director
    7. Elton John: Singer, Songwriter and Musician
    8. Justin Timberlake: Singer & Actor
    9. Oprah Winfrey: Media Publisher and Corporate CEO
    10. Martha Stewart: Media Publisher and Corporate CEO

    Professional Athletes (partial list):

    1. Willie Mays: Hall-of-Fame Baseball Legend
    2. Hank Aaron: Hall-of-Fame Baseball Legend
    3. Derek Jeter: All-Star Shortstop, New York Yankees
    4. Magic Johnson: Hall-of-Fame Basketball Legend
    5. Michael Jordan: Hall-of-Fame Basketball Legend
    6. Muhammad Ali: Boxing Legend
    7. Floyd Mayweather: Boxing Champion
    8. Emmitt Smith: NFL Hall-of-Famer
    9. Charles Woodson: NFL Great
    10. Wayne Rooney: Soccer Great

And for Romney? Here’sa similar list of Mitt’s endorsers, most of whom simply don’t impress me —many that don’t surprise me either. Among them, theDes Moines Register(in their first endorsement of a Republican since Nixon and one that repudiates THEIR OWN positions re:their 2008 Obama endorsement; The Washington Examiner(The anti-Post); televangelist Billy Graham; actress, and celebrity shoplifter, Lindsay Lohan, and former Arkansas Governor and Fox News Host, Mike Huckabee (now calling on the “Wrath of God,” threatening “eternal damnation” for those voting for Obama”).

Note: Though not an official endorsement, New Jersey Governor, REPUBLICAN, Chris Cristie…(a recent Obama critic & Romney surrogate) was certainly effusive in his praise of President Obama’s “leadership, caring, concern and interest” in the face of the Hurricane Sandy natural disaster. No wonder Rush Limbaugh’s whine is reaching such a feverish crescendo…now derisively calling the Obama – Christie bipartisan rapprochement and cooperation “man love”! Poor Rush…I really think he may just explode.

What is incredible is the silence of BOTH Bushes. It's hard to tell whether Romney is embarrassed to be seen with them or the other way around.

I missed Obama in Boulder last night. I already had plans, but didn't know till the day before he was coming. My neighbor said it was worth the 4 hour wait.

Where are all the other regressive candidates? Normally they are on the stump with the candidate. But the silence is deafening. Except for Newt on the talking heads Sunday shows.

At dinner last night we were discussing polling. Who is taking the polls? Not those of us with caller ID. Not those who only have cell phones. I think we'll find that the polling is just not accurate this go-round.

I'm way more optimistic than I was last month, re: Obama's re-election chances. But I still worry about all the people who hate him enough to vote against their self-interests. There are so many of those out there.

Anne - Rasmussen doesn't poll voters with cell phones. Why they always have more Regressive Results.  Likely the pollsters will miss all of us - they don't have to get a very big sample to get their margin of error.  Wondered if you were there last night. I saw Obama in Oregon in 2008 and it can be a long wait and sometimes rough conditions...seeing Kerry in 2004 in over 100 degree weather, outside, was grueling.

Things I learned from Kam's video ...  (1) Obama is a Kenyan, Muslim, atheist, who went to a Christian Church for 20 years.  (2) we are being watched by drones and losing our freedoms (3) Buddhists are coming in and taking over our country (4) Romney has a 'plan' to fix everything but nobody knows what it is.  And that lady with the wild gray hair needs to step away from Rush and Faux Noise  ...  her brain cells have been totally fried.  Yeeesh ... sad and depressing both.

In good news ... the Democratic Senate candidate in Indiana is leading the teabagger nutso who upset Richard Lugar by 11 points now.  Looks like we will pick up a Senate seat here.

    Whew!  WaPo eviscerates Romney!

    Mitt Romney’s campaign insults voters
    Washington Post Editorial Board

    11/02/2012

THROUGH ALL THE flip-flops, there has been one consistency in the campaign of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney: a contempt for the electorate.

How else to explain his refusal to disclose essential information? Defying recent bipartisan tradition, he failed to release the names of his bundlers — the high rollers who collected hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations. He never provided sufficient tax returns to show voters how he became rich.

How, other than an assumption that voters are too dim to remember what Mr. Romney has said across the years and months, to account for his breathtaking ideological shifts? He was a friend of immigrants, then a scourge of immigrants, then again a friend. He was a Kissingerian foreign policy realist, then a McCain-like hawk, then a purveyor of peace. He pioneered Obamacare, he detested Obamacare, then he found elements in it to cherish. Assault weapons were bad, then good. Abortion was okay, then bad. Climate change was an urgent problem; then, not so much. Hurricane cleanup was a job for the states, until it was once again a job for the feds.

The same presumption of gullibility has infused his misleading commercials (see: Jeep jobs to China) and his refusal to lay out an agenda. Mr. Romney promised to replace the Affordable Care Act but never said with what. He promised an alternative to President Obama’s lifeline to young undocumented immigrants but never deigned to describe it.

Much more, keep reading, well worth it: http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/mitt-romneys-election-campaign-insults-voters/2012/11/02/69fcc1fc-2428-11e2-9313-3c7f59038d93_story.html
