Crog, when they use the term angry that means it's getting redder. The concern is infection. The following is what you can do to watch the stump

1 Wash Hands. 2. Evaluate 1-2 x's daily it best light. Outdoor light is good because it doesn't cast wierd color. i.e blue light /yellow light. The key is to do  it in the same light daily. Check first to determine incision line is closed, no broken skin, no blisters. if skin and incision intact. Outline red area in ink date/time  2. lay hand over area and feel for warmth--only do this step if skin intact.(wash hands well with good mechanical action before doing this step.  noting where there are changes 3, record in a notebook date time and findings for each or record on computer 4, take pictures and upload into computer. 5 email to doc.

So a note may look like this 10/31 10am--red area marked with pen , area at inner stump red at incision line and extends one inch above and below incision, no redness at mid to outer stump. the incision is closed, the inner stump appears more swollen than outer stump. Temperature--inner stump normal/warm/hot to touch(then describe how far you feel the heat--see below re gloves.). Describe pain and area. use pain scale--zero no pain, 1-3 mild, 4-6 moderate, 7-8 moderately severe, 9-10 severe.

Make an agreement with the doc what level of pain he wants reported. B/C condition is changing if you have only no--to mild pain and then there is sudden increasing in pain report that right away.

Color changes, temperature changes, pain changes indicated there are changes occuring underneath. Don't want to create trouble , but ask doc directly if they are worried about infection. If yes then ask when they want to consider an antibiotic.

Other things you should consider. When laying is stump red? Is it red only when sitting? When sitting is stump rubbing against anything? Are your hips throwing the stump to the center when you sit? If you change position in the w/c does reddness lessen.

I think I gave you the link to a thread I did allot of wound care work on. Suggest you read it. Pick and choose what applies.

You may be visited often by home health staff, but the person that has the most consistent "eyes" on the stump is you. The consistency of those "eyes" will pick up the subtle changes that need to be addressed early versus later. Plus HH staff may not see you for several days , for example, the weekend.

If you can, use gloves to do warmth assessment, I suggest you do so, But it takes practice to feel the subtelty of skin temp changes with gloves on.

A key word used in your description is angry. That tells me it is red, not just pink, but a deeper definite red. But evaluating it in the sitting and laying position can give you a better idea if it's positioning versus something brewing.

Have someone in the family review this post and the link. Hopefully , it is someone with you daily b/c then you have a partner that you can talk over what you are seeing. Always nice to have a partner. Plus, they can take the daily pictures.

Reiterating--when evaluating any wound or incisional area your key indicators are intactness of incision or wound changes, weeping/drainage, color change, temperature change, and pain changes.  I'll bring back the link. L&H&P's sassy

    http://community.breastcancer.org/topic_post?forum_id=44&id=754935&page=1

Another thought----You were likely told to keep stump straight when in bed or chair. If elevation was directed, make sure that the stump and knee joint are straight. If you allow the stump to rest in a bent position, the tendons can tighten up which will make more physically therapy necessary to stretch them. Outcome if they tighten up is greater difficulty in using a prosthesis. Sure they have given you exercises to counter tendon tightening, but had to say it. :)

SAS. Thanks so much for all your information and link... The visiting nurse is coming today and I will have her help me with just what I should be looking at... I have a brace that I wear that keeps my stump and knee in a straight position plus I do have exercises to do.. I so appreciate all the help you have given me..

    Have a great day,

Bone scan today. Injection at 10:00 - Scan at 1:00. Starting to freak out thinking of tight spaces. Going to ask to see the machine and taking a sleeping mask and anxiety pills with me (just incase). I have someone going with me. I just about freaked out during the PET scan.

    Veggy,

When I had my bone scan I laid on a table and the machine actually went over and under me. Much easier than the CT scan. The tech was nice and put a block under my knees to take the stress off my back.

VEGIE, I, of course, am still just so worried about my girl.  Hon, please explain to me.  You are now in Stage 4 and your scars are bleeding all over the place.  I suppose the tests today willl help the doc figure out what to do.  Just before an MRI they gave me a valium to chew up and drink water and I somehow made it thru that awful un-grand canyon.  Seems like I remember early summer you had a little operation for some bumps they found, but diid not know they had operated again.  And so this is why I am so concerned about this rather large bleeding thing going on now.  I would be screaming, out of my mind.  I do not know how you are standing up to this.  Oh yeah, you want to throw stuff and scream.  Bless your broken heart.  But I want to resist telling you all the goody-goody stories, you know them as well as I do.  But hope is all we have.  Hope is the delicious chicken noodle soup when you have the flu and it is a cold day.  Hope is the great big hug I give you, altho I am a small person.  Hope is Fuzzy's pictures of her adorable little puppy snuggling up to Fuzz's lovely face, such love is there.  Love is the only way out, Vegie.  And I love you with all my heart.

Fuzzarina, I'm not sure who is cuter, you or your dog.  Well, you got it on the beauty thing, but your dog, good grief, your little baby with hands and feet that snuggles you in your neck because he needs you and loves you so much.  I need you and love you so much, too.  Can we all just come on over and snuggle wuggle with you, perhaps hire an English butler to bring us our tasties, and we'll fight over what movie to watch. I've been thinking of getting NetFlix,I don'tknow how it works, but instant movies sound so good to me, since I'm annoyed with the order-up kind with our Satellite seems to be for three-year-olds.

Got to go to the grocery stores.  Doc appointment at 11 a.m.  Tomorrow I finally renew my driver's license thing (can you believe it's three years past due?!?) and go early vote.  I hate the grocery store.  But I shall thinkof my sweet Vegie and all her hurts and struggles, and of Fuzzy and those gorgeous eyes and her dogthat loves her so much, and i will get through this day with some sort of smile.  Love to ALL of you, too.  Gail

Veggy i am claustrophobic and the idea of the bone scan freaked me right out. But the reality wasnt nearly as bad as i imagined. As sewingnut said i just lay on the table and the machine does most of the moving. My table did move at one point but they warned me before that happened. Make sure you tell the nurse/tech whoevers doing it i did and she was really helpful had me keep my eyes closed until my head was exposed and that made it so much better. Only tough part was staying still on the table that long...took about 1/2 hr. for the main one then they did some angle views. And once i had the shot they wanted me to drink a couple bottles of water or something and go to the washroom as often as you can it helps spread the stuff through your body. Hope this makes it sound not so horrible and you get through it fine.

No appts for me today so i'm in your pocket if u want me :-) ((((((hugs))))))

Cindy, I sincerely hope you heal without further complications. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Veggy, I hope you get nothing but good news from your bone scan.

Essa, sorry about the fatigue. I hope the break gives you some energy back. It just sucks to be sick and tired....and sick and tired.

Rider, how'd the move go? I hope the nausea has eased up.

The news I've been seeing here in Canada about the storm is just devastating. Hope you all made it through o.k.

    Grog :)

Had a nice chat with Linda n3---she made it through storm okay. In a state that went realitively unscathed.

Rider glad some things going your way. Work done, move almost done, visiting  a friend. eating and drinking a little more all nice.

Veggy--been on the phone yacking. Your bone scan is done by now. Gail mentioned the valium, I know you usually have ativan on hand. They're in the same family of drugs, so don't take both or you'll have a nice bit of sleep. It wouldn't be an overdose if you've already done it. You just may want to sleep till tomorrow and you won't remember much about today. Which that would be very nice for you.  BUT Gails suggestion is a good one for sure. For future studies on and empty stomach take the drug at the facility about 15 minutes before hand. If chewed will work real fast. That's why you want to be right at the facility. Bone scan machines are way different than MRI machines. Bone scans don't block you in like MRI's. Hope you had a good experience. Whats up with the bleeding --still going on?

Gracie looked at affect of the storm east of you---they are getting battered too, and about 100,000 without power.  a mess.

    I am so upset.

First, I got upset about all that rain leaking in and the damage it was doing and the cost it would be to repair it.

So, I had a couple beers.

Then this guy who seems to be wooing me came over. I just wanted him to tell me what he thought it would cost to do some wiring (since the ceiling will be torn down).

He never go to that. Instead he got into drinking and then we ended up at a liquor store for more drinks. And he stayed and stayed. He slept in the extra bedroom -- because of the drinking.

OK. Now, with my cancer treatment plan, drinking is bad enough. Unfortunately, the guy is a smoker. So, of course, I smoked. Nine freaking months down the tube!!!!!

Oh, and he is soooo glad to see me laughing. Oh Eff him! Eff me! Eff everything!

I screwed up so bad. I just can't stand it. I'm taking xanax and going back to sleep. I can't stand being awake.

I know this is all small potatoes compared to the stuff you all are going through, but it really knocked me. It really did.

    BOO!

I had the operation 2 weeks ago. The radiated breast (from the first bout with cancer) did not heal good after my BMX and reconstruction. Holes would open up and heal and form again. The PS and I had enough of that. He was going to take the expander out of that side and let it heal up and later do the lat flap reconstruction. Once they had me under he deflated the expander a little and redid the scar. A seroma formed and leaked out for a couple of days. That really freaked me out. Since that has happened my breast feels so much better. Anyway I see him tomorrow for a check up.

Today I had the bone scan. I forgot about taking the ativan with me. I forgot to take all of my medication this morning. I got the shot and had to come back in three hours. I drand a quart of water and 2 cups of coffee. I think the coffee was a bad idea. I had to lay still for 40 minutes. I was getting annoying by saying, "Is it over with?" "How about now?" "Now?" I tried to lay there with my eyes closed (I forgot the ativan). I peaked. I just about freaked out. She had to remind me to breathe. Its done. Its over. Its time to wait for the results. UGH! I asked for a copy of the scan. They gave it to me.

JC Penny's had free haircuts for BC survivors. Today I managed the courage to go through with it. I hate having a stranger cut my hair. He washed, no, more like massaged my hair. Then he cut and started to straighted the sides. Then he wanted to straighted the whole thing. I think he just wanted to play. I think it looks funky. I enjoyed the attention. I can't wait to see what happens when I wash it and it curls back up.

I am really, really tired. Bt I'll be checking back before i go to bed. I have to get up and ready to go to NJ tomorrow morning. I'm on my 3rd quart of water. How much more do I need to drink?

    Hugs!!!!

Dune....I am so sorry you feel so terrible about that night...but girrrrrrrl....I'm thinking LIVE LIVE LIVE!!!  It sounds like you had an awesome time with an awesome guy and let loose and I am so hoping that you can fogive yourself and smile!!!

GG - Oh yese, we can snuggle and watch movies my dear!! Baby puppy gets terrible jealous but he eventually goes to sleep right bertween my ankles!!!   LOL  I guess he and I are the talk of the neighborhood - we go everywhere together.

Sassy Sas - I was getting all relazed just READING about the massage!!!  LOL Before BC, I gave DH massages every night with a back scratch.  He really loved that.  It's difficult now because of the surgery side.  But, I think you may have inspired me to quit using that as an excuse (at least every night).  SOOOOOO glad your brain is good!  We need your nugget!  Any update on Shithead?

Veggy - please let us know what the results say ok?  In your pocket always.  Scream away and let it out.

Essa - no rules in this little room.  We get to talk about what ever the hell we want!  I think that's one of the special parts...we gather here as we are - no changes, no edits.  If you dig alternative stuff, I support you 100%.  I find each of us facinating.  The only thing I wouldn't really enjoy is something that all of us seem to agree on (Politics).  But, this is all about freedom.  Even is someone did express their views, I wouldn't bat an eye at it.  I love you just as you are.  Please don't ever think I would want any of us to go somewhere else to talk about anything.  XOXOXOXO

Thank you all for the kind words.  That puppy has brought so much to me.  He loves me no matter how crappy I'm feeling or how ever I feel.  It's crazy how he "knows" when something is wrong with me - whether its a sore body part or sickness...and he adjusts accordingly!  Just a very special part of the family.

Nancy...do you have the constuction plans ready for the outside kitty cabana?  LOL When you talk about SKK I think I can relate a little...LOL and all of us who have our babies...I've always wanted to own a shelter...but you know where that would go...I'd be eating out of trash cans so I could feed all the babies...

We have trick or treat tonight and this one girls just showed up in heels that I would never where...especially if I was walking to get Halloween candy!!  Her dogs will be barkin' tonight!!

I had a nice conversation with my PS today.  He admitted that the nurse expanded me way too much.  I ended up with a monster bruise.  Still talking about recon in the spring...I just want this shit over with so bad.  Might use my own tissue if I can convince him that's what I want and if I have enough for the procedure.  I told him it was the worst pain I have experienced through this entire experience and I should have been hospitalized and on morphiene...knowing how much I do not like either of those, he listened.  OH!  And, I talked to my MH and asked for something to help with sleeping...he gave me Lorazepam...I friggin' slept last night.  And, bonus...it's also used for nausia so I felt pretty good today too!  It's just so wonderful to finally have a MH that listens...so great.   soooooooooo great.  The last guy didn't speak english and "already knew the answers" if you know what I mean....

More later ladies....I need a KitKat...

Okay storey time--fuzzy encouraged me to tell the storey, I trust all of you, This is NOT a halloween story. But several nights ago, i woke up b/c of a strong--very strong smell of cologne, it was so strong I could not identify the scent. I saw a shadow passing through the bedroom. Schatzi woofed and there was enough light, I could see she was smiling. She was wagging her tail. She didn't get up. Had it not been for her reaction, I may have been frightened. That's it.  Fuzzy thinks it was DH. I don't know. I did get into a pecarious situation within a couple of days which turned out okay. Schatzi  is scared of allot, but anyone that knows a dogs smile, understands what I'm saying. Make of it what you will. Fuzzy was the first person I told about it. She said I should tell ya'll.

Essa dear one we are a family here, was waiting for Fuzzys response which I anticipated, she would say what she said. We love you dear.  We care about each other and respect each others thoughts. We learn from each other. We may differ, but we don't attack each other. My little survey of the last week was for a different reason. But it applies here. Apparently, there was something deleted by the Mods monitoring posts that found a post contrary to our families stated belief. Good. Thanks Mods.

sas, I believe it might have been DH. Was it a scent he wore? I got a piece of mail yesterday addressed to my son who passed fourteen years ago. As we have moved several times with no forwarding addresses it was rather freaky. Also after he passed I asked that if he needed to communicate that he tilt our paintings. Several were tilted the next day and one was on the floor leaning up against the wall. When my mom passed the scent of oranges filled the room at the exact time she breathed her last breath.

Okay we started a flow---there were several contacts within the week Greg died. I'm blocking on them right now. But other stories may cause them to come forward.

When my Dad died I had to explain it to my 2 3/4   y/o son. My parents lived with us,so, they were a big part of his life. To describe to a very bright interactive toddler almost three, Was difficult why Pop-pops wasn't coming back. DS wasn't accepting of the response. He wanted to go where Pop-pops was, In a moment of weakness i said he was on the moon with God--it was a full moon. He said that was okay , but who was the man sitting on our roof. I asked him to describe the man ---he said he had a beard and was in a white---well little freaked. Then at Dads funeral, my husband had Ds in the childerns room. DS again asked why that same man was walking through the room. Heard about this later. There were no other stories from son about the man in white. But when we got back to Ohio , the moon was still quite bright and Ds pointed up and said Pop-pops---took me aback. I'd forgotten where I said pop-pops had gone. To this day, when I see the moon, I think of my dad and since then have placed everyone lost on the moon. Because----it causes me to think of them and a short prayer. I thought at the time of that first night home after Dad's funeral---if such a beautiful sight causes me to think of him and then any subsequent family member, what a healing thing. Should I be remembered in the same ---what a joy

I should have written down Greg's contacts. The one I just remember lead to another insurance policy at the time---odd but he was still taking care---all i heard was "look again"--I did and found another policy. I'll post as I remember
