Ginger and all-I've been trying to keep up on the reading. I had put allot of disaster stuff on Bonfires starting on Oct 26th. You may want to read and just make alist of stuff you can use for future referral. it was different than standard disaster stuff, figured didn't need to repeat standard stuff. Used to do disaster stuff.
Too many people did not get the significance of this storm. People in Florida woke up after Andrew, then Flloyd, Than the four in 2004, then 2008 with Fay that while it seemed harmless enough to begin with--it just wouldn't go away----three days of constant rain
Services cannot be returned without work--work requires people. Florida power and light has sent hundreds of trucks up north. They have done this ever since Andrew when so many people from other states sent there power people here. The cooperation between states on restoration of services is at an all time high in the history of the country. But think about the magnitude of this occurence. It affected all of the original thirteen colonies, the new frontiers of the Ohio valley, Tennessee, and West Virginia. Yes FEMA is there , but they can't do want an electrician can, they can't do what an experienced tree cutter can. Forget what state finally paired treecutters with an electrical team. Seems logical, but all is a learning experience.
Preparedness is multilevel 1. individual.2 county, 3. state, 4 national. You can reverse the order. Bottom line, is each has responsibilities. There is no one like our emergencies services in the world. They willing put their lives on the line for us everyday, but when it's b/c people didn't follow directions--what is that?
Make a list of what you need to prepare for a disaster. You can even prepare now by keeping important papers in one place( along with keeping master or copy in a safety deposit box). I keep 2 bags ahead on dog food. Bleach 4 pool containers and at least 3 regular bleach bottles, Paper products 4 weeks ahead. Canned stuff 4weeks---then start eating it in September. Water is touchy--don't like it to get too old. Iodine drops for water. Tap lights are great. Batteries. Garbage bags a box ahead. Know where your septic clean outs are. Create swales or french drains around your property.
Learn about surface water management --encourage your county to create a separate division for this purpose. Brevard County Florida has one of the best departments---compare it to Volusia county Florida which has flooded subs all the time.
I've had flood insurance since 1998---wasn't required where we live. It's now up to $376.00(started at $250). My Dh hated it, but my attitude was it was my Christmas gift, rather have it than any jewel. For the piece of mind that it gave me---well worth it. With the close calls of storms on the east coast across from the space center in Florida. Many a time when a storm was emminent, people said I'm going to get it---well doesn't go into effect right away(3 months), but once in place, it contiuous as long as premium is paid.
For those that are subject to other types of disasters---have a plan and a safe place. Documents ready to go.
You are the first person that can make yourself safe. Love ya'll , glad we are all safe sassy

Hellooooooo sheila8 Always love to see your flower--BTW what is it?

Fuzzy, I sure hope that isn't what your aunt has. It's a terrible disease, but then you know that from your research. (((((HUGS)))))
-
I called the oncologist and waited and then I called my family doctor. I have a spot on the sternum and on my femur. Yes, the BC spread. I start chemo this Wednesday.
-
sas, I echo your sentiments. I was on a disaster committee in a private community and we repeatedly told everyone that they had to be prepared to tough it out on their own for at least a week with supplies for that long because that was what we estimated it would take for relief to reach us. If told to evacuate do so. Things can be replaced, people can't. My prayers go out to all who are suffering and to the countless brave people who have placed themselves in harm's way to help them.
-
Okay---no one else here and I'm alone---R&B's on. Whaoooooo. it's too late to call anyone tried Nancy and that'd be okay, Nance you are probably with Mom.
So, want too talk about the deletion of Mods regarding Athena's post---- no one mentioned it. So, not sure if anyone saw it. But if the Mods deleted it---well it could be from not nice to intentionally nice. Last novena announcement was wiped out by Mods b/c someone found it offensive. So, will not assume anything. I had people PM me asking what was my post that was deleted. SOOOOOOOOO
Let's talk about group dynamics. We have declared ourselves a family. We each take on a role. In my family of three of four that had polio in 1952, the fourth was a semanarian (he didn't complete). But I took on the defender role. Mess with my sister or brother---better watch out---you'd have to mess with me. Good or bad it has followed me life long. Has been a travail and a Godsend, never boring. But I did learn along the way when people were using me, they wouldn't be at my back when I took on their cause. That is not the case here. I understand the bully---their arrogance and wish to diminish others.
I didn't tell you from my question what my response would be.
I'll be a the front, if anyone attacks anyone of you

Veggy i am so sorry was truly hoping for good news for you. Don't know what to say ezcept it sucks!! Huge!!
Gentle loving (((hugs))) -
Veggy, sorry it has spread. Good luck with the chemo.{{{hugs}}}}
-
Veggy -sorry about the news---sucks----
-
PTd ---just thinking of this now -----how often have we talked about taking a video of the house stuff to support claims.... Ptd --we share a common bond---you sit at a table trying to make the best plan to make people safe---think of all that could go wrong--plan for it---then sharks swim down the street-----and someone says why didn't you warn me....................................Duh
-
Fuzzy-------sorry about you Aunt---
-
((((Veggy)))). Sorry for your news...
Cindy -
Veggy, I'm so sorry. Ugh, waiting for the phone to ring, wanting it not to ring, jumping out of your skin when it rings...it's all so stressful. I sincerely hope chemo knocks it back for you. Hang in there. Will they be doing a biopsy?
Fuzzy, so sorry to hear about your aunt. Hopefully progression will be slow and she'll have many quality years left.
-
Aww Veggy----what can i say except that I love you and Im comin...
-
Veggie, I'm so sorry to hear the news. Here's hoping chemo with chase it down and eliminate it. (((((HUGS)))))

Hi - My name is Mary and I am new. I really love what "the fuzzylemon" wrote. I am beginning to think being a "hermit" is the best way to go. Don't understand how they think we can just "ignore and not talk" about what we are going thru. But, please, give me some suggestions on what I can say to people, the ones that expect me NOT to talk about my problems and just go on are though everything is o.k.?
-
Mary, Except for a few really good friends, I only talk here. Other people don't get it anyway.
-
I'm feeling sad today. The memorial for my niece's husband was Thursday. My niece said all saints day was his favorite day and St. Marks was his favorite church. It was a well attended service (family was a bit worried since the cathedral is large). At the end of the service she carried his ashes down the aisle at the end of the procession of the cross and priests. At that point, I lost it. I said, she's the bravest woman in the world. Her stepmother was near me and said that she was thinking exactly the same thing. She posted a photo on facebook taken afterward with the sun on the downtown buildings and a rainbow in the sky.
-
Nothing has been said about a bone biopsy, yet. I am just in my own little world. Asking the stupid normal questions..."why me?" "what did I do to derserve this?" I'm angry. I'm crying. I just want to clean the house before I start chemo. I just want to stay under the covers. I want to get out and have some fun. I want to smack someone and say mosquito. I'm going to fight this again or Grannydukes will come after me and slap me silly.
Tight hugs.
Love you!

Hi Wren44: Thanks for the help. I know what you mean about other people not getting it.
I noticed you are in WA state. I also am in WA state, Moses Lake, WA to be exact. I have lived in the area about 9 years. I am a widow with now children and live alone, so my friends have become my family. I needed help from neighbors that I knew fairly well and that has caused problems. I did have a few very good friends I talked too (knew one for over 20 years and the other about 16 years), but they are sick and tired over the issue, one actually compared me to her niece with ovarian cancer down-playing my situation stating that her niece had more problems.
Without family, I can't tell you how painful it has been to have them let me down. I just feel like being a hermit now and feel I don't belong in the "other world." Mary

Mary, The niece may have worse problems, but that doesn't mean that you don't have problems that are devastating to you. I'm sorry you don't live in a bigger city where you would have more chance to meet other people with the same problem. I think we all have the feeling that we're no longer part of the 'other world' but it tends to diminish with time. I'm going to suggest some threads that I've found supportive. One is 'for older people with more sense', there's a stage 1 thread (can't remember the name but stage 1 is in the name, another is Life's a Beach, which has some other folks in the northwest, and finally there's one called Bonfires (again not sure of exact name) in which you can throw your unsupportive friends, docs you don't like, mean nurses, etc. There's another called Northwest Ladies--we're going to try to meet up in the Spring. You'll get way more support here than anywhere else in my opinion. (((HUGS)))

My dear aunt....oh God please no...I've used my gift of extreme pushyness to convince her daughter to take her for a second opinion, quit her job and move in with her momma. Took about 20 minutes. Nasty shitty diseases that target and brutalizes the innocent and perfect. I'm very upset about some heavy shit. Mary...this is one of the wonderful parts of the romp room....its just real.
SAS....my Novena will be in route to your PM box. Just have to get my head re-wrapped.
