Athena - good to see you - everything OK in your area?
-
What Lewing said! If we can't post fact elsewhere we shouldn't be terrorized by fiction here.
Sorry - catching up in a piecemeal way here.
-
I never thought I'd see a POTUS candidate more loathsome than GW Bush, but his name is Willard Romney. He has zero integrity. The Chrysler lie/story is just depressing...the extent someone will go to, to become POTUS. I'm sickened.
At lunch, I see him loading a truck (in Ohio) with flats of water...well one flat, it was a Photo Op, afterall. The reporters asked and asked him how he felt about FEMA and he just ignored them. Just like he refuses to give any interviews to the press, as he can't control them possibly pointing out a discrepancy between his various positions, or even challenging one of his previous positions! He certainly can't risk having them challenge him on the truth.
I knew GW Bush would be a horrible President, and he didn't let me down. I think we knew he would take us to war, no matter what. Honestly, I have no idea what Mitt Romney will do, but I guarantee you it won't be anything he will have told us and judged by his team of advisors, it will probably be another war. This country can't take any more of this type of leadership.

THE STATES ARE IN CHARGE OF THEIR EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT! Duh!
FEMA must be invited in by the Governor. Although the state must justify the need for federal assistance. Disaster Recovery Centers do not open until the state identifies and provides a location. They do not close if the state doesn't want them to close.
Just what we need, someone shooting off their mouth about things they know nothing about. Make a hell of a President......NOT! -
Unfortuneately for Mitt, diasters do not respect state borders.
-
Speaking of borders, I once worked on a huge fire in Montana (year 2000) and I worked with both an Australian and Canadian team, consecutively (they wanted to learn the ICS system - the one FEMA uses, that was developed by my federal agency). Since then, these countries have adopted our "federal" system...as well as New Zealand. For so many reasons, disasters need to be coordinated at the national level...money being one of the biggest. I'm tired, so can't really express this at the moment.
I'm going to add...not all skills are present in all states. A National system facilitates the sharing of resources. A few of my coworkers worked at ground zero in the aftermath...it was a team assembled from across state borders...as all of ourNational Teams are.
-
Still recall last years fires in Tx due to drought. Round about Fall there was a rain event and Governor Good Hair(aka Rick Perry) whined and cried that the Pres was refusing Texans disaster relief just to spite Perry. Of course millions was coming in for the fire events which were much more serious in terms of loss and damage and the Feds advised Perry that Texas was capable of managing the flood event on its own.
This from a guy who keeps saying he doesn't need Fed money......except when he does. -
It's wonderful that so many on this thread know and understand how federal government works (or doesn't work, as the case may be). I wish that those who fear or hate government would actually take some time to research and learn rather than covering everything with a blanket statement. I guess it's a lot easier to hate without reason.

Does everyone here know who Laurie David is? I think, probably so. Other than formerly being married to Larry David, I believe she produced an "Incovenient Truth" with Al Gore. Somewhere on BCO I saw a recipe and she was listed as a coauthor, and as a "friend of BCO." I've since asked the Mods how she is affiliated with BCO, though I know she has an interest in cancer, but still not clear why, nor did I get an answer from the Mods. I follow Laurie David on Twitter and one of her tweets led me to a David Sarven-Schreiber Youtube and his very inspiring story of brain cancer. I'm still curious how she might be involved with BCO (Mods?)? I may just try to Tweet her and ask.
-
Kam, look under ThinkPink,LiveGreen on BCO. She and a colleague have provided some recipes. I think that's the connection you're looking for.
-
Yes, interesting that others can pop in here with facts and links but we can't do the same.
I was so tempted to post a link over there about Chris Christie
thanking President for his storm response, but I restrained myself. What's the point? They believe what they want to believe, and facts are irrelevant, even threatening.

-
I echo that sentiment Mary. Something is wrong here.
Laurie David's only connection is a casual posting of a recipe??
-
Maybe Romney does have another plan on how to win other than by lying at the drop of the hat...
http://www.addictinginfo.org/2012/10/27/gop-rigging-elections-for-romney/
-
I echo that sentiment also. Starting to wonder.
-
GG - So Tagg Romney owns an interest in voting machines in Hamilton County, Ohio. In a totally different report, Chuck Todd goes over the various Ohio voting regions and says "it all comes down to Hamilton County."
I still remember the story of Kerry sitting in the bar with ? on election night 2004 and saying "they stole it, they stole it [Ohio]."
-
Kam, it still makes me mad that Kerry did not contest that theft. Dems have GOT to start standing up to these Thugs.
-
Chick-a-dee, welcome home and THANK YOU for bringing your gorgeous chocoporn with you. Hope the cruise was wonderful.
Lewing - giggling at your expecting the "moderation" to be fair...tee, hee...must be a problem with phasers, thought I had all of them on ignore, creepy when one sneaks thru with that vicious fiction...deliberately destructive, where have we seen that b4? ( imagine jumping emoticons)
Welcome Athena, hope all is well in DC.

A nice precis from the Atlantic about why Robme is lying about Jeep's production in Ohio - he can't get traction on the fact that the President's auto industry bailout was a great success and popular in Ohio. So, he's just going to lie because ... Well, because that's all he can do.

Hi
Checking in via phone. No power since last night at 7. Tree fell on garage. My DH is at the hospiyal with his mom she was running out of oxygen. We're otherwise ok but the area looks like a warzone. Won't be posting much. Trying to save cell. Can only recharge by plugging phone into the car. Word is no power for maybe a week. Hope they're wrong. It's getting chilly and i miss rachel maddow.
Hope everyone else is ok. -
Hey Alexandria - that's tough. Glad all are ok. The worst will be the cold. Do you have a generator?? Atleast, a fireplace?? The absolute worst is not having heat. Been there, and barely did it. How will your mother do without heat?
HL - Robme doesn't even have plausible deniability with that Jeep story. I've heard he is tripling down with radio ads now. They have no shame. No wonder he is avoiding reporters as much as possible. Hopefully the press is growing weary of his lying and avoidance of easy questions and will just dog him the rest of the campaign. From what I've heard, Ohions are not buying it.
-
(((Alexandria))) - A huge hello. I hope the garage didn't sustain too much damage. Try to stay warm, and I'm sorry about DH's mother.
ETA: Waving at Suzieq and Sun.
-
I'm hearing about power outage from family around DC. Never any fun. But all are safe.
-
No generator. Fireplace but only couple logs. I'm boiling water on the gas stove. It raises the temp a bit. Could be worse. At least i can cook. The house is dry and we're safe.
Heard Mittens phony storm relief program on my battery powered radio. What a joke. He made some comment about cleaning up a football field and comparing it to this. Idiot. -
(((Alexandria))) I'm so sorry. Glad your DH was able to get mom to the hospital---will they be able to keep her in hospital? Hope the power is back soon.
When we were overheated, we resorted to trying to cool one room only and shutting all the other doors. Our plan is the same for any power failures (rather likely from what I hear about winter wind storms this year) only I will be adding socks to my feet---somehow wool socks to bed DOES make one warmer.
-
My FEMA coworkers are beginning to get calls to travel. I won't be going, scans and stuff this week.
-
I so seldom even think of the word loathe in regard to anyone -- it really isn't me at all, but I truly do loathe this person. He is so much of what I find despicable in a person. He is deplorable and I say again, if I haven't said it lately -- what a waste of human life. He is one of the worst examples I have ever seen, trodding over anyone and anything to GAIN something he truly feels he derserves.
I do feel that he is not getting away with so very many of his dirty tricks and lie filled speeches, and I see it as becoming harder, not easier as we come closer to election time. I feel quite sorry for those who choose not to "witness" his lies. To enforce them even, because it says as much about them as about him. When did people stop wanting fairness, justice, truth, ethics, in favor of lying down with good old filthy pond scum. I guess when it was decided we should not have a black man in the White House who has done such a credible job under the worst condition's possible. That people would rather have this flip-flopping liar who seems to be helping destroy more than he is building. I do loathe him. He is the epitome of greed and avarice.

Alexandria - how do you lite your gas burners? I have a new gas stove but the burners are electrical ignition. I don't assume I can just light a match to them, but maybe I can? I've heard of people around here, without wood stoves, who light up all of their burners for heat in a power outage. (Please don't use your power, though, unnecessarily to answer my question...maybe file it away for when you get your power back.) We don't have natural gas here....just propane tanks.
-
Ooh - I just saw a Nor Cal Medical person (Med unit leader or EMT) on CNN helping with transporting a baby from an intensive care unit that lost power. "Nor Cal" is one of my agency's Type 2 (federal) Incident Command Teams.
-
Kam, please caution with propane burners used for heat. VERY dangerous should a flame go out while you may be sleeping. Carbon monoxide poisoning results and is a killer. If you must use this method make sure a window is open for clean air and to exhaust the carbon monoxide that may result.
-
I also wonder why we are not allowed to post on the Mirror thread but the regulars at that thread are allowed to come over here.
That makes me almost as mad as someone who thinks this country would be a better place without FEMA.
I guess there will be no answers only questions and drive-bys by people who believe the rules do not apply to them, because apparently we are the only ones who are restricted as to where we can post.
