Hi Chevyboy, I'm glad you stepped out from lurking and spoke up. I hope you speak up more often.
I'm glad to hear from some that I've worried about - continue to stay safe everybody.
It would seem that being all the way over in Michigan I wouldn't have to worry about Sandy, right? Wrong. I live very near Lake Erie. They are saying that we might face flooding tomorrow. I'm sure it won't be as bad as the coast, but geez this is one huge storm.
-
No worries, yorkiemom. I didn't know if you knew or not, just wanted to clarify for anyone who might see it and freak out. 'cuz it is a pretty freaking amazing picture.

FEMA camps? Come on!
-
HL, did you just confess that you're part of the FEMA disinformation conspiracy?
Linda

I didn't know! Saw the pic on DU and thought it was real. I saw "The Day After Tomorrow" and totally forgot that scene. Who knows it could happen!
-
Oh yes! Google them! FEMA camps! FEMA re-education camps, no less. The crazy is strong in some bagger nutjobs! Really!
It is hysterically funny, but it is NOT an Onion story! I saw one response on the web this morning that you'll know when they're coming for you when all communications are cut off. Remember when I told you about the show "Doomsday Preppers" -- some of those people believe in FEMA camps. NOT KIDDING! ("Doomsday Preppers" is a sociology class in every episode!).

Linda, no ... I thought about it but I'm on FB under my IRL name and one Google would cause tens of thousands of heads to explode! BWAHAHAHAHAHA! But it is fun to poke them.

I'm hearing that Romney is double downing again...this time on the Jeep to be built in China lie...in a tv ad in Ohio.
Apparently this guy can lie lie lie and there is no accountability.

I won't google because I can't handle the onslaught of crazy. Some people need a real hobby, a FUN hobby that isn't rooted, grounded, and cemented in terror.

Oh, DH dealt with them all the time on the border. That's where he learned about the coded stickers on the backs of stop signs!

lindasa - yes we name our cyclones. They are the same thing only one goes anticlockwise and the other goes clockwise. The names are just different - hurricane for the northern hemisphere and cyclone for the southern hemisphere.

For the record (its the Candy Crowley in me):
Obama 34 newspaper endorsements 9,011,009 circulation
Romney 27 newspapers 4,956,749 circulation -
Do newspaper endorsements translate to votes?
-
Here's the best answer I've found E. btw, how are you feeling?
But who reads newspapers anymore? For all the energy spent winning and then advertising endorsements, do they make any difference?
"The short answer is no," said Jack Pitney, a political scientist at Claremont McKenna College. "But at this stage in the campaign, you're looking for every edge you can get, even if it's a microscopic edge."
Newspaper circulation has steadily declined in recent years, from almost 47 million per day in 2004 to barely 40 million last year, according to the Newspaper Association of America. While there's little data to show whether voters listen to what their local paper has to say about elections, there is some evidence that endorsements from people like celebrities and other politicians sometimes have a minor effect. In January, a Fox News poll showed 29 percent of voters would be more likely to vote for a candidate endorsed by former President Bill Clinton. Seventeen percent said the same about former President George W. Bush.
At this stage, campaigns, more than anything, want to establish that momentum is swinging in their candidate's direction. With the debates and the nominating conventions over, that's getting increasingly tough to do. So along with poll numbers and fundraising totals, newspaper endorsements are one way to show that a candidate is benefiting from a burst of enthusiasm.

Thanks, Kam! And I'm feeling much better!

Lights on, then off, hope all are safe & dry. THis is the BEST column - makes me smile. How ONE person can make a difference.

You need to update Mitt like you need to update hurricane strength - he is harder to track. Anyway, if this has already been posted, I apologize. Here is the genesis of Mitt Romney on federal disaster is:
During a CNN debate at the height of the GOP primary, Mitt Romney was asked, in the context of the Joplin disaster and FEMA's cash crunch, whether the agency should be shuttered so that states can individually take over responsibility for disaster response.
"Absolutely," he said. "Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that's the right direction. And if you can go even further, and send it back to the private sector, that's even better. Instead of thinking, in the federal budget, what we should cut, we should ask the opposite question, what should we keep?"
"Including disaster relief, though?" debate moderator John King asked Romney.
"We cannot -- we cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids," Romney replied. "It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids, knowing full well that we'll all be dead and gone before it's paid off. It makes no sense at all." The clip was flagged by HuffPost blogger Eric Zuesse.
......
UPDATE Sunday, 10:04 p.m.--A Romney official reaffirmed the former governor's position Sunday evening in an email.
"Gov. Romney wants to ensure states, who are the first responders and are in the best position to aid impacted individuals and communities, have the resources and assistance they need to cope with natural disasters," the Romney official said.
UPDATE II Monday, 9:10 a.m.--
The Washington Post's Greg Sargent adds: "There’s another nugget here worth highlighting, though. In that appearance, Romney also suggested it would be 'even better' to send any and all responsibilities of the federal government 'to the private sector,' disaster response included. So: Romney essentially favored privatizing disaster response."

Can you all imagine standing in a hurricane's path, praying for Hallibuton to come to our aid? After they couldn't bother to properly feed our soldiers during war? Hopng a Coca Cola truck will bring us water?
-
So tell me, how would Romney "ensure" that the states would have the resources they need? And as for privatization - yep, waiting for Halliburton! Good grief!
-
Don't "resources" and "assistance" require money?
-
Yep. Where's it going to come from, Mitt?
You know, every American citizen should be offended by his total disregard for their thinking capacity.....

E, shhhhh, we can't confuse regressives with facts.
-
Anti-gay preacher claims Sandy is the result of homosexuality. I'd just like to ask him why are non-gay "good Christians" punished for the sins of gays and their supporters. Of course logic and reason are not the forte of regressives.
Right now I could really use a <puke> smilie.
-
Yorkie: the non-gays haven't killed the gays, so they're guilty, too. That's all I can make out, anyway.
Still with power - but lights flickering. Wind still increasing.
-
-
Yes, we have to mass murder the gays to save ourselves. That's the ticket!
Glad your home is still functional Alexandria! Be safe!!
-
That's what I want RR! Mods, PLEASE!
-
OMG -- when I want to feel good I just come here. I listen to all the Regreassive stuff about Romeny's leading every where "REALLY". Why I should have just stayed under my rock and skipped all that excitement. Of course good ole' Faux would have you believe that polly-rot.
It borders on the most total lunacy for these Regressives to get so all enthused, because nothing and I mean absolutely nothing is being built here. Will the Regressives ever learn.....the news and other like-minded sources can say it is so until the cows come home but they are building it out of thin air and that is what you will be left when......thin air and not much more. A bigger bunch of masochists I've never encountered.
Of course, if it is not "polls" it is other things like conspiracies and cover-ups and did you hear this. Well I admit...it takes your mind off the posssibility that your guy is losing....which right now he most definitely seems to be doing just that. But then I listen to news that actually has the guts to tell me the truth---even when it doesn't feel so good. La-La land is not for me. I can work with the truth. There are so many avenues there.....so very, very few to work with when its a lie that could BLOW at any time.
That aniti-gay preacher. Methinks he doth protest way too much. Nuff' said.

Really windy here in Niagara too. Weather guy says wind here (and rain) should be the strongest between 2 and 6 a.m., and then it will gradually die down during the day. I'm crossing fingers that the severe windstorms we had early this year and last year managed to uproot all the dead and dying trees, and that the ones still standing are strong enough to withstand Sandy (with more apologies to our two Sandys!).
We withstood the fury of Hurricane Rafael a couple of weeks ago in the Atlantic, so surely Sandy won't do us in! But -- flashlights and candles are at the ready, along with dry wood for the fireplace, JIC! How I wish we had an oil lamp or two!
To everyone within Sandy's wrathful sweep, GOOD LUCK and STAY WARM, sweets!

ROMNEY VS. THE BETTER ANGELS
As "Frankenstorm" churns up the East Coast, it brings into relief the central argument of the 2012 campaign. Beneath all the minor squabbles and distractions, Obama vs. Romney is a contest between two starkly different views about the proper role of government. It’s Lincoln’s concept that informs the president’s approach: "The legitimate object of government is to do for a community of people whatever they need to have done, but can not do at all, or can not so well do, for themselves,” the 16th president famously said. Romney, meanwhile, has run as the faithful representative of the anti-government strain that, as Frank Rich recently
One of Romney's most pointed articulations of the government-hating strain came in a primary debate last June, when he was asked about a more localized version of what millions are facing today—the devastation in Joplin, Missouri. Should the states deal with such things rather than the federal government? “Absolutely,” Romney from the American ProspectEdited by Mods to fix the formatting
