    Kam - I used to be (and still am) a born-again Christian who faithfully tithed to the church. My favorite Bible story was of the loaves and fishes. Hunger was a new and terrifying concept to me as a child - if someone was hungry, why didn't their neighbors help? With a little help from some God-like magic, Jesus fed everyone. He didn't know who they were, didn't ask if they paid taxes, didn't tell them all to get a job. He didn't ask for proof, do a drug test, or worry about being fooled. He fed them.



    I don't consider myself a Christian anymore because of cancer and the related suffering of some very dear friends. But a lot of the teachings stuck with me simply because they're good advice. The overarching principle? Take care of those who need it.



    Romney's wealth doesn't bother me at all in and of itself. His amoral pursuit of that wealth does. Love of money is the root of all evil.

    Good morning all!  Watching the news and checking in here trying to keep track of what is going on with Hurricane Sandy.  My best friend's name is Sandy ... I called her this morning and told her to knock it off.  Wish that would really work.  She is going to join my niece Katrina in storm history I'm afraid.  Stay safe you all!

    Welcome chevyboy!  Glad you finally decided to jump in and join us.

    I have little doubt that FEMA and disaster relief would be among the first on a Romney/Ryan chopping block.  Lean and mean and uncaring on any help for average Americans.  I would expect state taxes to soar ... some much worse than others ... to compensate for that loss.  Next they will be wanting a Constitutional amendment to take out the 'provide for the general welfare' part.  (insert bad word here)

    I'm sorry to say that I fully expect the Rs to try to play politics to block relief for this storm too if they can.  They have done it before when the east coast was hit.

    a couple of things I just saw.....little headlines.  Can't  give you links...don't know how but I'm going to learn one of these days:

    Politico writes about why Republicans are struggling to win control of the Senate. And new polls in Massachusetts and Montana show Elizabeth Warren running comfortably ahead of GOP Sen. Scott Brown, while Sen. Jon Tester and Rep. Denny Rehberg are neck-and-neck in Big Sky Country.

    I'll hate being gone for several hours today working, but there is a t.v. there so could catch some of the storm news.  I do so hope and pray that all stay safe.  We were without power of any kind a couple years ago for just about one whole week.  It was not fun -- sure gave me a lot of respect for pioneers.  There is a big ravine next to our house and linemen had to climb a very tall tree that had fallen over the electric wires there......cut sections out carefully so that the line wouldn't rebound with a snap when the weight came off..........I didn't realize it was possible to hold one's breath for that long.......even though I lost the contents of my fridge and freezer, the hum of appliances coming back on along with the big commercial furnace.....music, sweet music. 

    Ya'll have my deep thoughts and prayers.

    WR - I expect Romney to come out and support FEMA. It's consistent with his flippy-floppy MO and it would be wildly stupid of him to look 1/3 of the country in the face and say "as President, I will give you no help, you 47%er taker bastards!" Especially one week before election day.

    Enjoyful....your so right.  I don't know what COLOR lying is, but he turns that color thousands of times a day and this will be just one instance.  Of course, we all know he is going to take care of us eventually.  We just have no idea when and how, but with his record as we know it....it won't be a pretty thing.  The top 1 % will be thrilled though and hey....that who really matters.

    Linda ... have they evacuated people who could get flooded by that nasty canal? 

    I don't care one way or another if people have 6 houses, a gazillion cars and all that crap.  I really don't understand why they even want it though.  Sounds like a whole lot of hassle to me to take care of stuff you don't even use.  Guess I'm not much of a material girl.

    E -- The joke originated with going into a bar, but of course we know Mittens wouldn't go there.  Then it was a coffee shop, but we know Mittens wouldn't go there either.  So yes, Mittens has a Post Mistress!!!  (Hahaha, must be a Cdn/British term, eh?  We encourage women to have upper management jobs hereInnocent)

    Susieq -- Do Aussies name their cyclones?  And isn't "cyclone" a much more descriptively accurate name than "hurricane"?  I think so!

    Obama has cancelled a trip to Wisconsin and is going to stay here to watch over the weather.

    Now, I'm not a bettin' lioness, but I would love to take a wager on the odds that Mitt will criticize Barak for this. Don't ask me how or why - he'll find an excuse.

    But he's still losing in November - remember that.

    WR, the area right by the canal is in the red zone that was supposed to have been evacuated last night. Whether people actually went is another question.  It's kind of a mixed area -- largely industrial and low-income but with some gentrification.  There are a lot of older, long-time residents there and I worry that they may have decided to stick it out, whether out of stubborness or not having anywhere else to go.  Schools on the high ground around me are being pressed into service as evacuation centers, but that's hardly a comfortable situation for anyone (much less folks who are older and maybe have medical needs).

    And even people who evacuated are going to come back to a godawful mess. 

    Another area that's being hit really hard is the neighborhood of Red Hook, another low-income area right by NY harbor (it used to be a huge commercial port, now not so much).  Streets there are underwater already.

    And again, all this before it's even started to rain to any appreciable extent!

    MSNBC was playing the clip of Romney saying that federal disaster aid was immoral.

    My actual name is Sandy, not Alexandria (she's a character from a novel I wrote).  So sitting in the path of Hurricane Sandy seems somewhat, shall we say, ironic. Sandy waiting for the wallop from Sandy.

    Note to self: eat more candy corn.

    Romney's going to be very quiet re the immorality of disaster aid. My bet is that he turns away any reporters who attempt to "politicize" his prior remarks. It was a different situation, of course we have to help, blah blah.

    But the thing is, it's totally in keeping with his positions on everything else, from Medicaid to insurance regulation to education: leave it to the states.  So I hope he has the minimal decency and honesty to own his position.

    I've seen that posted a lot, just wanted to make clear it's from a movie ("The Day After Tomorrow" or something).  Sandy's still a ways out to sea.

    The skies here aren't especially dramatic, but the wind is definitely picking up.

    Wind is increasing in Northern Virginia -- just got an alert from our county warning system that said -- "Remember the derecho?  That was 24 minutes long.  We are facing 24 hours of winds just like that.  Don't go out.  Stay inside and stay safe.  Expect power outages."  there was more, but that particularly struck me -- remember the derecho?  Yah -- that was only 24 minutes.  Surprised

    I particularly like what the President's FEMA administrator is reported to have said:  "(FEMA Administrator Craig) Fugate, and by extension, Obama, have earned praise for restoring the agency’s reputation in the years since Hurricane Katrina. Despite working for former Florida governor Jeb Bush, Fugate said he rebuffed overtures from George W. Bush to rebuild FEMA after Katrina, saying that the GOP administration did not want to rebuild the agency in a fashion since embraced by Obama."

    I am also greatly amused by the fact that this disaster is bringing out the "FEMA camps" nutjobs on the interwebs, particularly Facebook.  It is like watching South Park episodes only in writing!  I posted (but then decided not to push the button) "Oh yes, FEMA camps! And the stickers on the backs of stop signs and other street signs are the coded directions for the UN troops who will be moving in from Canada.  The black helicopters are coming aaaaany minute now .... aaaaaaaannnnyyyy minute ...."  I figured thousands of heads would explode if I actually posted it.  But it is funny to see the "FEMA camps" insanity resurface.  They can't agree on how many there are ... 3,000 or 300 or 30 in every state or 70 square miles worth in every state ... Laughing  Kinda loses its allure for me since I actually know people who work at FEMA and my new boss is a FEMA reservist.
