    Mary, when it comes to food and drink, I'm mutilingual!! I did a tour and tasting at a local artisan distillery today. Got a citrus vodka and a gin infused with a hint of lavendar. Will be experimenting with some new drinks for the fall at the BCO Bar & Grill.

    Romney Economic Team Fails History Lesson

    In history, there have been various economic theories which have come and gone. In general, the modern economic theorist falls into one of two camps; those who follow the work of Dr Frederich Hayek and those who follow the work of John Maynard Keynes. Hayek argued for government restraint while Keynes promoted for government engagement in the economy.

    The problem comes in that Hayek's work -- in particular the form of his economics promoted by Milton Freidman and his Chicago School of Economics -- when it was tried, has never worked. While it produces a strong short-term surge, over the long period the underlying foundations of the economy erode and a systemic collapse is inevitable, such as you found in Argentina and Chile during the last century. Akin to taking a shot of adrenalin or steroid for a short term athletic boost, the long term damage is never worth the short term gain.

    But, it is this flawed premise which the Romney campaign continues to cling to in order to make the case that he should replace Barack Obama for President of the United States. You can read his economic teams case here:

    It boils down to this: we just did not do enough of deregulation and Laissez Faire economics, we must have more! Just because it caused the last recession doesn't mean it will cause another one. And they point to the previous recessions of the past 50 years as their proof.

    Instead, noted Harvard economists released this paper, discussing the differences between the recessions of the past 50 years and the one which gripped the world in 2007. The difference boils down to a single word - Systemic:

    The underlying problem is not a bad performing sector dragging down the economy, it is that the system itself is sick and cannot absorb the shock when such a sector appears. This allows a single sector to take down the entire structure. To recover requires far more time -- five or more years -- based on historical comparisons. In effect, rather than recover, the economy needs to rebuild, to restructure. One must restore the system or else the underlying issues will appear again.

    Romney's proposal addresses none of this; it is based on the idea that if they just believe, it will work. All evidence points to the contrary, but they still cling to their laissez faire, calling it Free Market, and claim that "this time it will work, they're sure of it!" You just have to believe in it!

    Belief is good for fairy tales, it is not good for economic policy.

    We actually went out for lunch today, but it was a very long drive west to a pub which was way too expensive for the quality of the food. We met with the other people going on the bike ride next Feb. It was 1 1/2 hr drive and boring when you are the designated driver.

    It was the 3 year anniversary of my first surgery today. MRI happening on Friday - not looking forward to it.

    Great pics, dogs and cats.  As far as the 'dog' pic, it sort of reminds me of an old 60's saying...."you smell, and your mother dresses you funny".  Don't know why I can remember things like that so much easier than important things -- like whose driveway am I in when it is mine. 

    Watched MTP this morning.  I so miss Russert.  He was able to put people on the spot effectively though David Gregory gets the heat turned up a notch.  I do note though that on important questions the Repugs dodged as has been usual.  Of course, how can they do otherwise. 

    Still troubled over the great demand for answers. What we can have access to we will get when it is possible.  Too many cooks spoil the broth.  There are things that bumblers should not be stirring up.  It was a great dis-service that Romney interjected himself into something he should not have and has managed to help create such disproportion in the whole event.  We need to move forward without help of candidates or pundits.

    I, like many, am a bit weary of this whole thing.  I'm thinking wow.....sales of Omeprozole (sp) may sky-rocket and I'll be first in line.  I wonder at this point what more I will learn after tomorrow night's debate but I'll be thrilled when it is done.  I hope Romney will settle down and not have to be moderator and speaker all at the same time. Not becoming and I also wonder how he can be "schooled" on statesmanship and correct assessments of what is going on with clear-cut and sound ideas.  I fear 90 more minutes of not much for an answer and 90 minutes of trying to discredit our President.  Sigh !!!!

    Jackie, I fear your fears are well founded. I don't know what the Romney strategy will be tomorrow. His problem is that when Obama's on his game, Romney is at grave risk for being called on his lies and flip flops. Plus, he knows diddly about foreign policy. If he tries, once again, to go after Obama on Libya he will be soundly spanked.

    Oh George McGovern - many don't know he was a true war hero.  He never wanted it mentioned during his run against Richard Nixon.  He was a wonderful and peace loving man.

    As far as the debate tomorrow. It's such a difficult topic.  The incumbent knows so much more about foreign policy, yet probably encumbered by secrecy.  Romney will have the advantage of puffing mightily about China, as all challengers do, but the reality for the POTUS, none of the things Romney will spew are very realistic policies.

    Ofcourse, Obama has OBL and the fact that Romney has previously left no options other than a ground war in Iran, nor did he want to leave Iraq.  

    I hate that a non-incumbent Republican will be spewing neo-conservative hegemony with his Dan Senor, Wolfowitz, and that creep Bolton in his earpiece.  We will surely end up in another war, somewhere with this violent loving crowd. 

    Romney has already shown he doesn't have nuance, let alone knowledge outside of leverage buyouts.   Does he even understand what the Arab Spring is, e.g.?  When given a topic at last debate, about gun violence, his answer was 2 parent households?  He doesn't have anything near a good answer unless rehearsed.

    Hi all -- I'm back from a vacay in the mid-Atlantic, just missing Hurrican Rafael by about 100 nautical miles last Tuesday!

    Pages and pages and pages to read -- wow, you gals have been prolific!  Lewing, today I think will turn out to be a healing one for you and your daughter.  She will remember all the wonderful things said about her Dad, and that IS how she will remember, and be so grateful that she had him for a father.

    Soteria and Enjoyful (and anyone I've missed) only warm and good wishes for successful surgeries.

    I believe that Romney is an intelligent man and probably a good man in some respects. His inconsistencies and lies are based in an internal conflict between what he truly believes and what he needs to say and do to win an election (or buy out a company, or win at cards).

    Thanks, Kam.  I'm really going to miss the place as it is such a completely comfortable place to live.  Unfortunately, it's also big and takes a lot of energy to keep it up the way it deserves.  What I'll miss the most (probably, depending upon what we find to replace it) will be being able to see practically forever.  I like that feeling of letting your eyes roam.

    It's funny what you say about furniture.  No, we haven't downsized, we just like open-ness so have never liked clutter.  We both have terrible allergies, so carpet is out, drapes are out.  My husband kept saying (when we started talking about moving) "we have too much "stuff", we have to get rid of "stuff"", and I kept going - but what do you want to get rid of?  It doesn't seem like we have that much?  Well, then we started actually looking through the "stuff" that wasn't out, but was "put away".  Damn!!!  we had too much STUFF!  So we've pared down a lot of stuff that we would never use again, but it wasn't furniture!!

    My gf in pdx says it has been raining.  Yesterday I went to Oregon to shop (not that far, but over a 4500' pass). It was cloudy and drizzly. It was beautiful and sunny here and today is crystal clear.  What's it doing up your way?

    Before I finish reading all the entries on this page I just want to say.....isn't almost total delusion a grand thing.  You don't have to look at anything negative and can just trot yourself over to Fox news to figure out what you know.  Its so easy not to do the work yourself.  Just let those people tell you who you are and what you should want, and how everyone else but us is trying to take that away from you.  Oh people, if it all were just that simple.  If this nice fairy tale of good guys, bad guys were really like it sounds.  You made be nervous ( not admitting it of course ) about Obama possibly regaining his seat, but just as in the old saying, " a fool and his money are soon parted " you'd be wise to be just as nervous should it go the other way.  All that glitters is not gold.  I guess it is a math thing......what is won, is won for everyone, and what is lost is too.  It is one thing for Fox news not to want -- and they never have, Obama for President --- but by any stretch at all, if the Democrats are right here, hope you know someone from Fox news who will give you back what YOU will lose. 

    Just a few thoughts in my head....easy to dismiss.  I could be so far out to lunch, but what if I'm not.
