Athena~ Thanks for this post. I'm new to this dreaded disease. Dx on 7/27/12, having surgery Monday, and won't know final dx until path comes back a week after surgery.

I didn't know much at all about Komen, but I've been seeing a lot of negative info about this org.

    Thanks again for educating us.

    Blessings

Good luck in the OR, soteria!

Oh, you will hear a mouthful about Komen if you stay on BCO much longer - and there is a fair amount of bipartisanship about that. (Don't get me and don't get Sherri on the subject!!)

I looked at the label of my calcium supplement and the company is donating to Susan G. Komen.  I am going to call them Monday and set them straight.

This election could end up as a tie in the Electoral College.  If it does, the House of Representatives will select the President and the Senate will select the Vice President.  This means we will get a Democratic President and Vice President.  How so, you may ask?  Romney has no core beliefs and obeys anyone he sees as powerful.  Old Joe will have Romney in a head lock on day one.  Romney will be Biden's poodle boy. Cool

Athena - I wrote my peace (I saved it), pressed submit and it seemed it wanted me to register first. I did that with one of my extra email accounts and it said that email was already registered in August of this year.  That is impossible.  Were you required to submit this sort of info to post your comment?

I'm leaving for the day, so may not see your reply til later.  As I said, I saved my comment for posting later.

Good luck Soteria.  Walks in this park are not a lot of fun, but one step closer is always good.

I think the mods are kidding themselves if they think this will end with the election.  The ugliness has been going on for the last four years, and has insinuated its way into threads about a wide variety of ostensiblly nonpolitical topics -- from mammograms to the issues faced by mastectomy patients at airport security.  To my mind, it's about basic respect; respect for one another and respect for truth.

It's nuts, in my book, to assert a right to post random rumors pulled from the internet, or to make stuff up, and then deny others the right to point out falsehoods and factual misstatements.  It's even worse when that privileged status is granted to one thread and only one thread.

I suppose I could learn to grit my teeth when people post utter nonsense  -- nonsense that a quick look-up on the BLS or Census or similar site can disprove.  But my values are such that if someone makes a racist or homophobic or islamophobic statement, I will call them on it.  Period.  As much as I value this board, there are other things I value more.

Hope that doesn't mean I'm a short-termer here.  I thought it was safe to come back, but maybe not.

    lewing,

Post the comment without attribution on this board and your response.  That will cover the issue and still conform to the request of the moderators.

Many people just lurk on boards without posting.  These are the real audience.  Bigotry must not go unremarked on but the same result will happen if the remark is posts here.  You will never change the mind of a bigot so it is not worth trying.

lewing - I very much hope you don't grit your teeth. We benefit from your outspoken-ness.Kiss

And I agree - I am not going to stop talking politics after the election. Too much is at stake, and we all care. The proof is that this is one of the most visited threads on BCO and we are not even on active topics.

Breast cancer is, in many ways, weaved into the national fabric. So much policy affects us. For example, if budget sequestration goes through as expected, the NIH's budget for research will be flat - that affects us bc patients. So we do and should care about budget and fiscal talks. That is just one way in which we are embedded into the political landscape. BC is an expensive illness with no cure. Almost all of us who get it travel a long road in which, like it or not, we come up against government policies, business climates and research capacity.

If I had to get such a serious illness as cancer, I wish I could at least be allowed to be ill with no argument and treat my illness. But every step of the way -and this is regardless of your finacial resources-- politics, budgets and laws confrnt you.

Until we become a civilized nation with a single payer system, bc will continue to be a sadly political issue.

Even if that happens, I hope our thread survives.

    Soteria -

All the best for your surgery and diagnosis. I hope your path to wellness is a comfortable one!

I also have surgery next week - the surgeon removed a tumor last month (my third occurrence of BC) but didn't get clear margins. I am sorry for you, for me, for all of us dealing with this horrid disease.

Behind the politics, we're all terribly ill, frightened people who wish the best for each other.

The real disgusting news of the day is that Issa's trying to make political hay out of the incident in Libya has now resulted in comprising our national security.  The identities of those working for and with us has been made public by his dump of documents.

This was provided before I think but everybody who wants to know what 'really' happened and what the attack was like ... instead of the whining about why didn't you tell us this or that ... should read it.  I'm getting real tired of the Republicans making it sound like our people there were just left sitting in an unsecured hotel room or something.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  The attackers set the buildings on fire.  Let's find them and punish them and quit trying to use the deaths of Americans who were serving their country as political pawns.

    http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2012/10/198791.htm#.UHmUMQQjpX0.twitter

    Some excerpts ...

"The compound is roughly 300 yards long – that’s three football fields long – and a hundred yards wide. We need that much room to provide the best possible setback against car bombs. Over the next few months, physical security at the compound is strengthened. The outer wall is upgraded, its height is increased to nine feet.It is topped by three feet of barbed wire and concertina wire all around the huge property. External lighting is increased. Jersey barriers, which are big concrete blocks, are installed outside and inside the gate. Steel drop bars are added at the gates to control vehicle access and to provide some anti-ram protection. The buildings on the compound itself were strengthened."

"And I should break for a second and describe what a safe haven is. A safe haven is a fortified area within a building. This particular safe haven has a very heavy metal grill on it with several locks on it. It essentially divides the one – the single floor of that building in half, and half the floor is the safe haven, the bedroom half. Also in the safe haven is a central sort of closet area where people can take refuge where there are no windows around. In that safe haven are medical supplies, water, and such things. All the windows to that area of the building have all been grilled. A couple of them have grills that can be open from the inside so people inside can get out, but they can’t be – obviously can’t be opened from the outside."

"The – when the Ambassador traveled to Benghazi, he traveled with two additional security agents over and above the complement of three who were assigned to post. So there were five agents with him there rather than the two who are normally assigned there – the three who are normally assigned. So they were up two."

I read the comments to that article Athena.  Well done by all who commented.  I think the Komen person in that article probably believes the fluff ... hopefully her eyes have been opened.

Linda ... I cringe at some of the stuff too but if people don't care if it is actually true or not there is nothing you can do.   We want you to stay with us!

Been off-line mostly, during my visit here.  Got a chance on the computer, while my daughter's sleeping, but  wow, you all have really been posting.  Pages and pages to read.

Quick comment on the Romney lack of military experience.  Back during W's reign, someone came up with the term - chickenhawk.  That's someone who never served in the military but is very quick to send other people's sons, daughters, husbands and wives into battle.  Cheney, Bush, Rumsfeld, they were all chickenhawks.  That term would also apply to Romney, I think, advocating a war from the safety of Paris.  Those sort of people scare me.  It's much too easy for them to play with other people's lives.

On the topic of Susan G.  I loathe Komen.  Wrote a song about it once.   Don't have all of it with me here in California - but here's what I remember.

Got the Komen Blues,  singing the Komen Blues

    I ain't wearing pink, and I ain't gonna walk

Susan G. Komen is just empty talk

A pretty pink ribbon on Kentucky Fried chicken don't do much for me

It gets Komen Money, but here's the truth honey, it won't keep you cancer free.

Got the Komen blues, singing the komen blues.

They got ribbons on candy, they got ribbons on soap,

Ribbons on teeshirts, they're just selling empty hope.

Got the komen blues, singing the komen blues

Let's forcus on research, let's focus on cure

But focus on komen ain't helping, that's for sure.

Got the pink ribbon, chocolate bunny,  kentucky fried, corporate money, Susan G. Komen blues

Good luck to Solera.  Surgery is always scary.

Enjoyful~I will be thinking about you and I hope you don't mind, but I will be praying for an excellent outcome from your surgery too.

Even though we disagree politically, I don't ever forget, that we are all fighting this same horrible disease! I respect all that you have all been through, and all you continue to go through while fighting this battle.

    What a lovely couple!

This is a sad weekend for me - the memorial service for my ex-husband, who died last August, is tomorrow.  Our daughter's on her way home from Chicago even as I write this.  Some of you already know about my ex, but for those who don't, he was a great guy (even though our marriage didn't work out) and a committed activist.  He was one of the victims of this summer's West Nile virus outbreak . . . still seems unreal that a freaking mosquito bite could take away my daughter's father.

Tomorrow's memorial is going to be a bit of an Irish wake at a Detroit restaurant/bar/music venue that was one of his favorite hangouts.  There'll be music (he was a talented pianist), memories, and half-price on black-and-tans (his usual order).

Thanks, all.  It's been a little over two months already, but it still seems like the world has shifted a bit - for me and even more so for our daughter.  She's been really, really strong, but I know tomorrow is going to be hard for her.  Ultimately comforting, I hope, but also hard.

Linda I respect what you say and how you say it.  I hope you will stay here.  Every sane voice that continues to bring truth forward helps to lighten the load that everyone must bear when there are those who would "set" the agenda with facts which are wrong.  I hope you will stay right here.  There are those who bring truth and brighten everything around them with it.  Truth is something we cannot do without  because it is the most basic of building blocks.

In response to the Universe who might have a better understanding of facts, facts is not bashing.  And I love Michael Jackson, wasn't too crazy about his religion which in my opinion is a cult as well (one of Ray's buddies tried to convert him and I had a fit) after some in-depth investigation.  Facts are facts, and he and I went through every single one.

I'm not a practicing Catholic but am still considered Catholic and have been bashed many times IRL.  Didn't bother me a bit.   I was confident in myself and my beliefs.  So put on your big girl panties and don't use every excuse to bash opinions and facts, coming from the ladies on this thread, especially those you considered at one time to be friends.
