Hi i just found this thread I am alive and surviving waiting for the doctors to call but wht the heck life goes on I live in So. Illinois we don't have bears but a lot of deer they even come into the yard  it is funny that the dogs don't scare them off. We moved back to town and i still see deer in the neighborhood at night all the building they are doing is making them come into the city .

I have been through Mt Vernon many a time on my way to KY Lake. I recall a yummy truckstop there too.  

Lost Creek, air horn sounds like a good idea.  I am sure I will bet some bear spray now. I think the dry summer cut down on the berries available for the bears.  There is a creek at the back of the property and deer, cayote and bears come up along the trail there.  It is their trail, not ours. All the houses along our dirt road have lots  trees and veregation surrounding them. Animal pathways too.  A friend has elk coming into her pasture. 

We did not know about Bears here. When we moved in my husband set the trash outside for pickup. In the morning he found the trash gone but the cans and lids thrown all about. He came in and told me it was the worst trash pick up we had ever had!   You already guessed it was a bear and you are correct.  Actually we had to bring the trash up the road to where it is paved for it to be picked up. A far cry from pickup at the house. Poor husband has been hauling trash back and forth ever since. We leave no foodof any kind out of doors. Since we don't have any horses or livestock there is no feed in the barn or in the feed bins there. I imagine the bears would go there if there was.    

We are from the city and then the far our suburbs of Chi and unfamilar with these precautions. The bears did give me a scare. I would hate to lose a dog to them and out cats are indoor cats. It was a little exciting to see a bear right there, and my husband saw all three. I was over the excitement and into reality very quickly.  I think, don't know, Hearing of bear attacks is rare and seems to involve dogs pretty often.   Heck, a pack of racoons ran down and attacked a jogger and her dog just North of Seattle. I had never heard of a racoon attack before. 

Now there are two things I didnt want to learn about, BC and Bears.

If it helps. I traveled between surgery and chemo.  If you are healed decently you can travel. I actually traveled twice. Once to find a place to live and then had surgery and then moved all from June to July 10th.  I hope you get to see those Gkids soon. They are just the best!

With half the property in town vacant lots we get bear coming to town every spring to eat the berries.  They generally go back into the woods when the berries are gone.  Every few years one will discover the garbage and stay behind but the State traps and relocates them quickly. As for the deer, we have a large population of resident does.  The fawns stay with the mother for two years so you generally see Mom with the current years fawn and a Juvenal.  The bucks pretty much stay in the woods but head for town for mating season.  They also show up a couple of days before hunting season!  We have a no hunting ordinance and they seem to know they are safe.

The raccoons are the biggest problem.  They will attack people, especially those that feed them.  It usually happens when a person who feeds a particular raccoon family encounters one of them and has nothing to give them, the raccoons will somtimes go after them.  They also are notorious killers of cats and small dogs.

It is only the last eight to ten years that coyotes have moved in to town.  They are probably responsible for the most missing cats and small dogs.  Our local weekly newspaper reports any domestic animals picked up by animal control in the paper and on it's e-mail news feed.  Reports of small animals are very rare.  It is almost always dogs the size of Labs or larger.

Yah but, Chrissy, Australia has all the worlds most poisonous, venomous and otherwise deadly insects and reptiles in the world!!!!

I do that too, outside spiders are safe and I never kill them. Inside is bye-bye!!

Too many pages behind and not enough time to read them all, but saw some of the drinking posts. That  moderation definition is so laughable. I take full responsibility for my drinking. I enjoy it and it's an important part of my life. If it leads to problems later, I'll own it. I enjoy sitting with hub and/or friends on weekends and having several beers or glasses of wine on any given Fri/Sat/Sun. Rest of week is maybe a glass of wine here and there, but a nightcap each night of my own concoction. I gave up smoking, I've changed my diet a whole lot, but I refuse to stop drinking and I refuse to feel guilty about it either. Nor will I ask for your sympathy if I develop liver issues down the road.

Yay 3jays!! Good to see you posting!! I've tried to ring you a couple of times but you were either out or asleep. I'll keep trying though and hopefully will catch up soon.

Hope any of you who're in the path of this monstrous storm are safe.  We're fortunate in our area of NC and should be having only high winds, although I know they can cause damage as well.  I saw on the news that Portsmouth Island, where DH and friends went fishing 2 weeks ago, has 20 stranded people on it.  It's an uninhabited island except for fishermen who visit, only accessible by ferry.  Now, of course, the ferries cannot go, nor can the Coast Guard get to these people.  Sounds like they waited too late to get off.

SIL (DH's sister) and her husband are hoping to travel to Richmond tomorrow for an evaluation on getting deep brain surgery/stimulation for BIL's Parkinson's.  VA will provide both transportation and lodging for them and they'll return Wednesday, if weather conditions allow them to make the trip.  Hope they can go and at least check it out.

Kathy, first off, i want to tell YOU i'll be praying for your SILand BIL thats' a scarey proposition, no matter what!!

  Moving here, is going slooowly.. when we actually move, it'll be easy. right next door. but, we still need to pack, can't seem to get the timing right, yet, but the details are getting ironed out.

  We're buying my next door neighbors house (thanx to him) he wanted OUT of this community, but we love it here... so, he's moving near murs parents, so we'll still be able to see him often. His villa has been updated, and is much sunnier, and modern. its' the outside unit, so has many many windows.. he's decided to gift us all the furniture, as well. he liked the stuff where he bought, and ourchased it. He's taking his personal stuff, his bed, and thats' about it.. so, it'll be a major upgrade for us. we could've never aforrded it, even used!!

 so,  hope i'll be back more often here, just takes a bit to conserve my energy, and still make all the drs appts, and pack.

Thanks for the prayers, 3jays.  But they didn't go today due to the weather in Richmond--hospital called this morning and told them all appts for today were cancelled, and will be back in touch to reschedule.  Your news is simply fabulous, and sounds like it'll be much easier on you too!  I'm so happy to hear this. And especially happy to hear you'll be back on here more often.  I've missed your posts, Cherie.

No, Barbe, I have no idea how long a hospitalization is for deep brain surgery, but this was just a consultation to see if BIL is a candidate for it at all.  I'll let you know more when he actually goes, but am relieved the appt for today was cancelled. 

My heart goes out to all those affected by this terrible storm.  All we're getting is wind and much colder temperatures, and snow in the mountains, but can you even imagine what NYC is like?  This is so frightening.
