Has your oncologist talked to you about drinking alcohol?  Mine says drinking is ok.  I've asked her several times because my breast cancer was 100% estrogen receptive. BYT - I'd love to eat your cooking!

schrodeo, Mine is 95% ER positive. I have been told that in moderation alcohol is okay. Preferably red wine for its cardiac benefits. some have said one five ounce glass a day is okay others have said two or three glasses a week. That is generally what I have.

Here we go: Moderation for WOMEN is considered no more than 2 glasses of wine a WEEK. That's it. If you make your own rules for "moderation" then you might as well just drink what you want. The oncologist should have explained a little further as some people, myself included, were/are used to enjoying a bottle of wine every night!

I just read an article that said the reason Moderate alcohol intake is showing a higher correlation to cancer is that people are fudging on how much they drink. In other words, people who actually have a higher alcohol intake are being counted in with those who are moderate drinkers.   I hope this sheds a bit more light.

I drink so little there is hardly a category for me. Maybe a glass of wine a month or in December one or two a week of Amaretto and hot cider with cinnamon-suger on the glass rim. I had actually become afraid of any drink at all and now feel comfotable having my usual once again.

I find I worry that I may damage my liver if I take tylenol. I don't even take a full dose of two any longer. I don't think anyone but you all know I have become such a worry wart.

The rain has returned here after 80+ days away. A very long dry season here, not good for the forests or forest fires in the region.  I am glad the rain has returned.  DGD had known of nothing but gloom here and in the early summer ran out into our west facing kitchen and said, "Too sunny!"

I was especially glad for the rain after what DH did on Thursday, a demonstration of how dangerous our dry conditions were.  He sits on our deck to smoke on nice days and keeps a "butt bucket" by the rail.  He flipped a butt at the bucket and overshot so it landed on the lawn.  He immediately went after it, took no more than 30 seconds or so and it had already started a fire and burned a 3 inch circle!

Chabba that has been exactly me fear. We are down a dirt road surrounded by acres of trees, mostly fir with branches turning rusty colored like I did not see last year.   So dry!!!!!   Rain rain come, and good for your husband being so smart!    I worry about the drivers who don't want to get their car smelly so they flip out the smokes onto the roadside. Maybe everyine out here is smarter, more fire aware. I am from Illinois, more smoke flippers.

Great pic Lisa, but the door is open..did you look? I did a "series" of photos of cemetary doors on crypts. It was truly lovely if I can say so myself. Well before the digital age, so it's all film.

Ginger, you're smart on the Tylenol. I've poisoned AND compromised my liver with my Tylenol use because a previous doc wouldn't give me pain meds!!!! I used to take 12-14 Tylenol ones a day just trying to do my job...sigh. I'm hoping my liver has recovered as I need it strong to fight off any future issues.

I also agree with the "lying drinkers" concept!!! Every time the issue comes up here on bco the word "moderation" is banged about. I say if you make up your own rules on moderation then you might as well just drink what you want. The EXPERTS have said that MORE than TWO drinks a week for women is TOO MUCH. Moderation is two drinks a week. MAX. That's it. That's all she wrote. But women will still jump in and say "my onc said moderation is okay". Okay, so define moderation, then!!! Moderation is less than two drinks a week!! Oncs should explain THAT!

I'll get off my soap box now. Sheesh.

Barbara, this narmally an area with lots of rain,  it's just that we have had a record breaking dry spell.  One of our problems is that we aren't prepared for such dry conditions, either physically or mentally.

Barbe, it was an artists studio behind the door. How nice was that! I too cannot drink at

All and can take only 2grams of tylenol a day. My doc increased yhe codein part of the pills to lessen the the tylenol ratio. My liver was fried from the combo of chemo and tylenol. I had CMF and the methotrexate can be toxic to the liver. But mine passed the point that it will ever recover. The thing is that I also can't take NSAIDS either for pain.

Hmm, I can't take Acetamenophin due to my stomach, no Tylenol due to liver, so it's straight Morphine as morphine sulphate for me! I THINK my liver has gotten better as they used to say that it had "areas" but now they just say fatty. Thanks doc. You're not so slim, either!!

Barbe, my liver went directly to irreversible cirhhosis Tylenol is Acetamenophin..but all three liver docs say it is dose specific, meaning over 2 gm is damaging to liver, but under is the drug of choice..

Must be a moderate drinker this week.

I opened a bottle of white wine 2 days ago, have had a drink on Friday night and tonight, and there will be another left in the bottle for tomorrow, so then I suppose I will really be over the moderate limit ! Shalln't be opening another bottle 'til Christmas...so where do I fall ? It's feast or famine when you've no-one to share a bottle with !

Had to call the Royal Society for the prevention of cruelty to animals early this morning. ( RSPCA) When I looked out of my window I saw my Rottweiler boys were doing a fan dance to get out of the garden and 'get' something. Hobbled down to the bottom of my garden, and found a beautiful fox all tangled up in some poultry netting....hung partially upside down, and snarling away at me like crazy. No way was I putting my hands near to him the mood he was in. After about an hour the RSPCA turned up, ONE young woman, but she had a 'catcher' thingy to hold the fox by the neck while I managed to clip the wire from his legs and hips without him taking my fingers off. When released he was off, a bit of a funny walk as he went, but he'll be back tonight. I have about 6 foxes come up to the back door for dog biscuits ( which I put out for them) every night just after midnight . RSPCA woman was suprised I was feeding foxes and keeping hens in the same area !! I absolutely love foxes, beautiful creatures, so I'll always look after them.

That is the back end  of the littlest bear retreating into the woods. That is one end of our deck at the bottom of the photo.  Did I mention we have a ton of blackberry bushes all around the perimiter of the mowed area of the property. Bears like them alot. Since you have the space to have various animals I can see why you would. I am glad you were able to get help to rescue him. The red foxes are just amazingly beautiful.

We had one of our owls swooping by the other evening hunting I am sure. They have a 3 to 4 foot wingspan so it isn't just my imagination that they are big!  My husband took the photos of the Owls and the Bears in our back yard.  The Owls will let him get surprisingly close to them.

I can't feed anything outside because of the bears. Did I tell you all we have three bears walk through the back yard, well and the side too on tuesday early evening. No food for the bear family from our house or they will come back and chomp on my dogs.

Up until l was 18, my dad owned a small package shop with a "stag" bar in the back. He posted a sign outside the bar door that read FREE BEER TOMORROW.

Once in a while some guy would come in asking for his free beer, dad would say, go read the sign.

He had a great sense of humor.

That's funny, Connie.  Ginger, your DGD looks like she's a force to be reckoned with!  So cute.

DH's Outer Banks fishing trip drags on and on, and I'm already planning what I'll say when next year comes.  Seven days is too long!  The most exciting thing I've done all day is go to a dentist appointment--at least there were people there. Actually I've managed to stay busy during the days but the nights are another matter.  I'll have DGS tomorrow for about 10 hours so there won't be any boredom then, that's for sure!

Haha, the blond sitting on the ground trying on shoes is my DGD. The little girl who knows what's what is a guest at Zoes birthday party. Zoe is stealing her shoes and that is what the little girl is letting everyone know about!

Zoe was very sure of herself rummaging through other kids shoes.  She also tried to feed her best boyfriend a big hamburger, er he is a vegetarian so he wouldn't open his mouth. It was fun watching all the goings on at her party.

Ginger...bears and owls...wow makes my foxes small fry !!! I cannot imagine confronting a bear...can they turn bad ?

I had a pet owl some years ago..a little owl..he just turned up one day, very young, I took him back to the bush he had appeared to come from, but he kept on walking up the yard to the back door 2 or 3 times a day, would not fly, or go away. As the cats were circling him ( I presume it was a him ) I brought him inside, had a big aviary made for him, and he showed no inclination to want to be off. I would have liked him to go, because the aviary was taking up a good lump of my conservatory, plus owls are non too clean. It actually drove me to have a second conservatory built just to get away from the mess ! Very expensive owl ! He was joined by a crow, who would squawk and make very guttural noises, plus loved it when I let him loose. He would climb onto my head...never made any attempt to fly...and scratch my scalp rooting about for nits (or something) He became very tame...and very noisy. Both the owl, Oswald, and the crow, Colin, lived quite long lives. I miss them, but wouldn't want to repeat that exercise.

Ginger, that little DGD and her friend...WHAT a picture. Aren't DGDs the best ? I get so much pleasure out of my 4inJanuary DGD...she's a little actress, and has us all on the run. Week after week she has been bringing boxes and baskets of dolls, and other various toys, and stashing them all over the place. To be quite honest I am sick of confronting dolls in my bed, dolls watching me in the shower, and dolls falling out of kitchen cupboards....don't know what it is all about ...yet ! As she goes home she reminds me DON'T move any of my dolls. The damned things are sitting in rows on my furniture, one is sat at the kitchen table, and I am not supposed to shift them ! She only spends minutes with them when she comes, quick check, and onto her ipad...which she's way past me on that !

I am off to buy myself a stud dog tomorrow, about an hours drive away. Sounds just what I want to bring fresh blood into my girls....a trip out as well. Taking DGD with me to get her out of her mothers hair ! She will yap, yap, yap all the way there and back !Gone are the days she would just drop off to sleep in her seat as soon as we hit the road !

On Sunday I am going to see The Ladyboys of Bankok....hehe...DD got 2 pairs of tickets, some promotion or other, so we are having a girls night out ! Should be a laugh, I am hoping we can go on out for a meal after the show. Just DD and me, plus 2 DGDs , we might as well make a night of it, I very rarely go out on a night now. Parking is my main worry, if I can't be dropped of near the venue I shall be in trouble! The carparking is all miles away from where we need to be, and I shalln't be able to walk far at all at that time of night. I am still looking for a dog/ puppy sitter for the evening !

Isabella, the bears are Black Bears, smaller than Grizzlie Bears which are huge.  Black bears are agressive when confronted and can kill you for sure. They do try to avoid humans, they are out and about looking for food and run into people accidentally. They will protect their young if they feel threatened.   Here we are to0ld to make noise before we go out. We keep our dogs exclusively on lead. A local man was severely wounded by a bear when he walked his dog into an area where bears frequented and the dog engaged the bear and the man tried to rescue his dog. He was in the hospital for a long time and I don't know if he is back at full function.

Current instructions are do not look a bear in the eye, make purselves look big, make loud noises to scare the bear off. Do not run unless you are certain, positively certain, you can get to safety faster than the bear can. Bears run much faster than we do.  Especially not to call out Go Bear, or Get out of here Bear. The animals have experience with people wanting to feed them calling out "Bear" and have come to equate the word Bear, with Food!    Yikes.

We are now told to fight back aggressively if attacked by a bear and to curl into a ball, cover our head and play dead only as a last resort. Oops, edited to add= Bear Spray!  Much stronger than pepper spray.  It will stop a charge if you spray it into the bears face.  It is about the size of a liter of pop.

People are to never, ever feed bears, ever! Most confrontations come because bears are looking for food andhave somehow learned this area or people could be a source.  We do not have bird feeders here because it would attract bears.  The land we are on has many blackberry bushes and bears love berries. They grow wild here and getting rid of them would be quite difficult. Some places hire herds of goats to come eat them up.

All of my Bear knowledge is brand new!    My family have all read up on local bears now.  I grew up in the city and had no idea about bears.

We have more than two big Owls that live in our trees. SOmetimes they follow my husband about. One tried to dive bomb his car just outside our drive.   I am sure they keep the rodent population down and are welcome to it!   I think it is wonderful you kept your owl healthy and made a place for him. It does seem like these owls know who my husband is.

    Good stories. Great pix.

Yikes! Ginger, the personal-size air horns are great noisemakers.  If I had bears so close to my deck, I'd probably have an air horn at hand.  Banging two metal garbage-can lids like cymbals works too. Yikes.  We have one or two on our street, but our fence and the dog-doo along the fence line seem to keep them from our property.  Neighbor gal had one come onto her porch and carry off a 50# sack of dog food she'd left outside.
