Diana- Wanna do the Santa Shuffle with me? 12/01.

Did the Ovarian Cancer Awareness 5K yesterday - I have a co-worker with Stage IV ovarian cancer so I run on her team. Very inspiring to be among all the teal shirts. I think the whole idea of "breast cancer awareness" is way overdone at this point - who isn't aware of breast cancer at this point??? But that's not the case for ovarian cancer. It's still very unknown, and too many women are dx Stage IV ovarian cancer from the get go because symptoms are so vague and there really is a lack of awareness about it. I try to support my teal ribbon sisters whenever I can.
Now don't laugh at my slow time, but based on my self-timing I believe I did a personal best with sub-12 minute miles. I've never managed sub-12 minute mile in a 5K before, so while not fast for most runners, I'm quite pleased with myself. The official times should be posted later this week so we'll see if I'm right. I put together a new music mix for the run with an 8-minute version of I Will Survive as the last song, so that was inspiring.
I started out doing a lot of exercise through chemo, but for me the effects were cumulative and for the last 3 treatments (I did 6*TAC) it was all I could do to drag myself to work and back. Exercise was just not possible for me working full time during chemo. But I started back on the elliptical and a gentle yoga class 2 weeks after treatment. I couldn't do much, but it was a start and I was able to work my way back. So everyone is different. Do what you can, but if your body tells you to rest, then listen to it.

Mary...yeah for the personal best!!!
I am training for my 10K, but I am just tired. Legs are tired constantly. I am going to start throwing in Jeff Galloway walks, I think, because I am just pooped... I am three weeks out from the race and on target with my training, but phew...Truth is, I have been doing my runs faster than the training plan set out by runner's world, but that is because that is the pace I am more comfortable at. But, my legs never seem to feel rested by my rest days (four per week...I am running only 3x per week!) Any suggestions?

Hi Ladies,
KRCornett: I started back running EXACTLY one month to the day after my surgery. I also ran during Chemo. I noticed I did have to go somewhat slower as my breathing was off by my third and fourth treatment. I was able to do boot camp everyday during treatment as well.
Update for my races:
I decided to register for American Heart Association 5K last week, the race was Sat. I placed 3rd in my Age Group and set a new PR...WAHOO!!I was so frustrated at the start as my Garmin wasn't cooperating! I ended up running with no watch which was apparently the BEST thing
I actually ran The Angry Armadillo 5K yesterday (My first trail race). I must have given the wrong date above as it shows I would be running it Oct. 30th. I came in First in my Age Group

Hey, the next big run event is you gals doing the Chicago marathon! Looking forward to the reports on that - my husband's hometown. Saturday night I fly to Berlin for a few days and after the generally okay result on the weekend, maybe I can take my running shoes and log a little Nike+ souvenir map after all.

Blackjack,
Good luck in Chicago. It was my first marathon too. I had never run more than 20 miles when I did it so that last 6 was tough (actually the last 15 or so were tough)! It's a great course and tons of support which makes it really fun. My advice is to run MUCH slower than you feel like you 'want to' for the first 10 or so miles. It's hard to do with all the excitement and adrenalin etc, but it will pay off in the end when you're still running and alot of people are walking. Actually, I've been using the Galloway method of training lately and I'm starting to believe in the benefits of frequent walk breaks as well. At least walk the water breaks. If you do all this and you have plenty of energy at the end you can always increase your pace at the end.

Thank you for the advice zsterling. I have been training with Cara with the walk /run training program. I hope to finish.
The weather will be cool..much better than all the heat I ran in this summer. Only 4 more days to crazy race day whooooo!!!

Best of luck to those running the Chicago marathon this weekend. Looking forward to your report. I've been steadily improving in my post chemo runs. Im feeling better, and my speed is improving. I will run a half marathon in Nov, and I'm thinking I might run a marathon the end of Nov....which would be my first marathon since starting this whole BC thing.

Congrats firstcall! C25K W3W3 Done with the first three weeks. Next week the program steps it up....... but I can do it!

You got this Adey!!
So I've had problems with my shoulder since my surgeries last year... thought I just needed to heal.. then thought I needed some time after rads... it's still buggine me after 6 months, so I went to see myprimary doc for it. He sent me for an xray and put me on some kind of Rx antiinflammatory to see if that will help (next step is an orthopedic doc). I asked if the antiinflammatory would also help with my plantar fasciitis, and he said yes, but I should probably take this time to take a proper break from running (otherwise I'm just chasing aggravation with drugs). So I'm on a mini-break of 7-10 days, we will reeval the shoulder at that time and I'll also check in on the heel. I'm a bit bummed but it will be nice not to have to limp the day after my long run!
Keep running for me, ok y'all??

Deriving inspiration from all the Chicago runners today!! Hope the race was a fantastic experience!
Edited to add: just signed up for a 4ish mile Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day.

i Girls...just finished the Chicago Marathon. My very first one in 6 hr / 30 min. I got a groin pull half way into it and it slowed me down a bit. But I completed 26.2 miles and that is a first for me stress fx and all. Any suggested to help heal this sore body. No blisters on my feet. yeah!! just icing them in ice water for a while. Any other food suggestion, had a bad stomachache with all the goo and water. Just wouls like to hear from past experience runners.
You girls rock.

Re: Santa Shuffle
Hey you! Sorry I missed your inquiry a bit back. My short answer is probably not, but I'm not sure. How's that for unequivocal ?
Glow Run report: I was reminded with the Glow Run that I really don't like to run in crowds and I do really love to run at my pace. So I'm not sure about spending $ on fun runs that frustrate me a bit :-)
Hope that doesn't sound too negative. I am glad that I went with my friends and sister and enjoyed the pre-race festivities. But the course layout was crazy strange in that it narrowed pretty quickly. And there were lots of 'runners' who were walking in the first mile. There were major logjams for a good 2 miles. I'm not super fast but not slow either. And I like a fast start and participants who follow race etiquette or common sense ;o) Ended up with a slower average mile on the Glow Run 10k than my next day solo 9 mile run.
The TIU 5k went so much better. Cool misty rain, way less participants, and able to get a fast start and run my pace. That's what I'm talking about.
Port removal was Wednesday so I have been walking - not running. Holding myself back is a killer. Looked for new shoes today after church. Had my Runners' World Fall list with flow chart and kicked some tires. My favorite shoes have way too many miles on them, but I love them. Thinking about having my gait analyzed and seeing what is recommended.
Chicago Marathon: kudos to all our runners!
Hugs!

Blackjack...YEAH! No experience here. Just awe. Congratulations!

Hurrah Blackjack!!
You rock!!!
Congrats!

BJ....congrats! you did well! As for the soreness, you probably need to rest from running for a bit. How long that is varies, but if this was your first marathon, it may need to be a week or two. But I would stay active, maybe some cycling or swimming or something. its good to keep things moving. Again Congrats. I think we have a couple more Chicago marathoners who still need to check in and give us a report

Diana - I recently ran a 5K like that - it was a charity race/walk with a lot of walkers, and a lot of newbie runners who started off strong, passing everyone in sight for about a mile, then having to walk the rest of the way. Unfortunately the race organizers did not do any pre-run instructions before the start, like asking faster runners to move to the front, slower runners move to the middle, and walkers to move to the back. So everyone was all jumbled together at the start. It was a tunnel run, so it was very narrow, and those who were walking tended to walk 2, 3 or even 4 abreast, gabbing and creating slow-moving rolling roadblocks. I'm not a fast runner at all, but recorded my all time slowest 5K because I kept getting trapped behind walls of walkers who were completely oblivious.
I just got an email from the race organizers asking for feedback, so I plan to write a polite note suggesting that they do a better job of letting people know some basic race etiquette about starting yourself in front or back, and not walking 3 and 4 abreast when there are still runners coming up behind you.
Congrats, Blackjack!!

Congratulations blackjack! I'm thinking about doing the Duke Cities 1/2 marathon in a couple weeks. You've got me inspired! I hope you're muscles, fracture etc are recovering nicely.

Couch 2(to) 5 K Week 4 Workout 2
It's a program on coolrunning.com called Couch to 5K. It get's you off the couch and to a 5K in 9 weeks, three days a week. I signed up for a 5K on 12/1. Fingers crossed!

Hello all! Its been ages since I posted on this thread. Actually had to take a break from running for a little while as I was having heart palpitations whenever I ran or did any type of strenuous physical activity. Finally got checked out - EKG, echo cardiogram and stress test - and all is fine. The cardiologist said it was likely happening because I was ramping up my activities again after being inactive while going thru the chemo. So, I'be gotten back to running again since September. I'm so impressed with all of you - those of you doing half-marathons (or more), those with such impressive times, and the beginners especially! I was really bummed when I first got back to running that I was so slow and couldn't run very far. I finally decided that I needed to stop worrying about how fast or far I was running - each time I went out, I either had a time goal or a distance goal and I would just do what I could do to achieve those goals. I've been steadily improving and this past Monday, I had my best run in a long time - did 4 miles in 42 minutes. I was so happy!! Hopefully, I'll be able to keep this up and feel like I'm in shape in time for my next big procedure in this ordeal. My reconstruction surgery is scheduled for November 9, so I'll be out of commission again for a while after that, though if I'm in pretty good shape going into it, I think I'll recover more quickly.
Firstcall - since I haven't been able to train much, I'm not going to run the Baltimore Half this weekend. I am still planning to do the Marine Corp 10K though.
Happy running everyone!
-
Congratulations everyone especially the Chicago marathoners. Way to go. I had the same grating experience as Natsfan at the Run for the Cure. There I was trying to tentatively run for the first time post stress fracture and there were people pushing strollers and walking dogs and ambling arm in arm at the freaking front of the pack! I know it's supposed to be a fuzzy pink day but, hell, go to the freaking back :-) I actually "ahemed" at some of the 1K walkers approaching the finish line, spreading 6-abreast across the whole corral "please move aside for runners!"
First time checking in since a week ago. Despite good intentions, I did not run in Berlin because I was walking so much. I took my shoes and temperature-approprate running clothing but never put them on. (I just got back. My shoes have not. My bag is having an extended tour.) I did a lot of walking to take in the historic cold war sites, following the path of the Wall, walking through "East Berlin" etc. I need to take some time with Google Earth and tally up my mileage. I must have walked 12+ hours, anyway. Unfortunately, the walking aggravated the stress fracture, which was gone gone gone, and I am back in the boot. Ah well.
-
ymac - you'll get back to the half's....just keep at it. And 4 miles in 42 minutes is great.
Delivered two babies yesterday, so I didnt get to run. Have to make up for it today. Good luck to our runners this weekend, be sure to let us know how it went.
