I absolutely support taxation of churches. If ministers start preaching politics from the pulpit, it becomes a political club. Their tax-exempt status only goes so far ... Pull it. I would LOVE to see this in court.

Alexandria, I also worry about voter suppression. In 2004 and 2008, they tried MIGHTILY to suppress the vote in Ohio in minority precincts. They are desperately struggling to do the same with this voter ID crap. And, although I hate sounding like a crazy conspiracist, I have anxiety about the voting computers.

"True the Vote" is a REAL voter suppression organization. Look up the crap they pulled in Racine, WI during the recall election. They engage boldly and blatantly in voter intimidation, voter interference and harassment. They ADMIT to illegally filming in polling places. Some of the people who work for them need to go to jail. There was a good article from the NYT I posted a few pages back .... There is one in the Atlantic, too.

Somebody told me that it is easier to hack a computer to manipulate straight ticket votes so it is safer to mark each candidate individually.  Don't know if it is true or not but I did just that.

Deliberate or not ... there are definitely problems with some voting machines.  Last election we had areas with more votes than there were voters and other such oddities.

HL - between the White Horse prophecy, and Romney's church spending less than 5% of their tithing received on true charity (while not paying the US government), one might say they've set themselves up as a government in absentia.

Yep, WR, I can believe that. As far as I know, Virginia doesn't have a button for "straight ticket," but I wouldn't use it anyway.

I'm off to get a 2.5 hour MRI - sacrum, lumbar and thoracic.  I'm a bit claustrophic, so right now I'm more worried about the MRI than the results.  Adavan in hand.  Hopefully I heard correctly, and they have satellite radio.

Kam-Good luck on the MRI. You know, it's funny, I didn't worry about MRIs until after I had my first one. And I was fine with that one....but I had one last June, and I was really nervous. I could hear my heart pounding in my ears(no it wasn't the machine) and the more I thought about it, the worse it got. I may ask for anti-anxiety meds next time.

What HL said about Bush I and Saddam Hussein.  Neocons seem to forget the US government was SUPPORTING him & Irag as a "bulwark" against Iran.  "The enemy of my enemy, etc."

Speaking of wonderful human beings, here is OUR Senator-to-be ( the Kennedy seat, MA)

Instead of sticking his unwelcome self into USA politics, why doesn't Bibi go home & make peace with the Palestinians, so they can finally, finally create the STATE most have been calling for....

I couldn't take the meds for my first MRI and PetScan/CT as they were sort of spontaneously planned by my BS, at night time, and my driver couldn't drive at night!  It sucked.  Nothing will keep me from the anxiety meds this time, though this is an "open" MRI - open my foot...a slightly bigger hole Frown  I'll be back tonite....85 mile drive to get there first.

Are any of those demonstrators over the mental/emotional age of 10?  Should they be allowed to vote?  I would have thought they'd grown out of those mythic cowboys and Indians westerns!

    Good Afternoon Everyone!

I'm having a very frustrating day  ... arghhh!

Kam .. Thinking of you and hoping for unremarkable results with the MRI.  I feel for you ... I hate having an MRI done.

I just received a rather outrageous PM from someone who has never posted - at least not under that account. I'm surprised that people are actually able to create accounts and send PMs without posting publicly. I think PM-ing should be an earned privilege - like the ability to report a post.

Not going to bother discussing the PM, but I do think messaging should not be so easy.

WR - Rum Balls???  I LOVE Rum Balls.  Would you be so kind as to share the recipe with me?

Kam, thinking of you with the MRI.  I hate MRI's, though have never taken meds for them - but I listen to music the whole time and keep my eyes shut.  If I open my eyes I freak out, so I just pretend that there's lots of space around me.  One time I actually fell asleep....  (I don't like drugs)

Separation of Church and state is an Enlightenment-era tenet. Just confirms my notion that the Tea Party is pre-industrial in its outlook, to say the very least. I think they would like the Middle Ages best:

--we are all made by God

--there is no science that the church has not approved of

--your fate is in the hands of God - unless we don't like your God, in which case we will launch Crusades and murder you all.

    --Government is Satan

That's the Tea Party manifesto in a nutshell.Tongue out

ETA: I shudder to think of when "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" will be derided as liberal gobbledigook!

I need a rum ball!  Or five or six!  It's that kind of day.

Kam ... thinking of you.  The closest open MRI machine to me is about an hours drive away.  The first one I had freaked me out.  I had to try it twice and it took about 45 minutes.  The key for me was to close my eyes tight before the shoved me into the machine.  Our local hospital doesn't have a radio or CD player, so it was quite noisy too.

When will you have the results?

    hugs,

    Bren

Athena ... sounds like somebody wanted to work around a block.  'Delete' is a further refinement of ignore Wink

They really need to give you eye masks for MRIs and PETs.  I'm a firm believer that keeping your eyes shut and resisting the urge to peek is the key.  The noises took me by surprise but I was kind of distracted by concentrating on the rhythm of them.

    Rum balls ...

1 (12 ounce) package vanilla wafers, crushed

    1 1/2 cups chopped nuts

    3/4 cup confectioners sugar

    1/4 cup cocoa

    1/2 cup light rum

    3 tablespoons light corn syrup

    1/8 cup confectioners' sugar

In a large bowl, combine vanilla wafer crumbs, chopped nuts, 3/4 cup confectioners' sugar, and cocoa. Mix in rum and corn syrup. Shape dough into 1 inch balls; roll in confectioners' sugar.

Store rum balls in an airtight container for 2 to 3 days to develop flavor. Roll them again in confectioners' sugar before serving.

Family story.  My mother always made rum balls for the holidays.  One year we had a joint family Thanksgiving dinner at my house with both my parents and my in-laws and my MIL really got into those rum balls before anybody noticed.  She was totally against all forms of alcohol and her kids were afraid to tell her what was in them.  She was the most agreeable I ever remember her being though and a good time was had by all.  So when anybody needs a dose of 'mellow' rum balls are always the first thing that comes to my mind.

Kam: I hate MRIs, so I sympathize with your ordeal.  Hope everything went ok, and good results come in.

WR: rum balls sound delicious.  I can't make them, youngest DH is allergic to nuts and chocolate, but you should serve them at our next cocktail hour.

Now trolling in PMs?  Some people really need to find a life.

My youngest son was about six when we were at a friend's Christmas party. He tried what he thought was a TimBit (donut hole) and came over to tell me not to eat the TimBits as there was something really wrong with them. They were rum balls.

never been in one of those machines, I don' think, but hoping your 'visit' will be short, almot sweet, and you'll feel all us in your pockets singing & doing happy dances to keep you busy while they're finding nothing ;-)

Athena, please send what ever it was PM'd to you to the Moderators, who shold have ability to have Tech Team determine which account it came from by now.  Delight of block is person bloked can't pm.  If I went to some threads on BCO, I woldn't be able to read a post.  Deeeeeee-lightful, like ignoring "tomahawk" chops and "war whoops" - makes life so much nicer.

Did anyone notice the President of the United States went up to 52% in the latest poll from the Great State of Ohio. Yeah, Ohio.  Fla nearly as good, VA looking blue...

    Joy to all...
