Has anyone ever heard of an eggwhite treatment to facilitate hair growth?
-
Eggs have long been a protein packed hair treatment, Eileen. Yolks are loaded with Biotin too. I rinse with organic apple cider vinegar to restore PH balance & make the scalp healthier too (1 Tbsp in ~ 2 cups water). This excerpt is from my favourite blogger, Crunchy Betty:
You know those fancy shampoos you buy that run around with sparkly labels boasting "protein for strengthening" in them? Well, you can get the same effect just by washing your hair with eggs. And egg yolks are nice and packed with vitamins A, D, and E - all great for shiny, healthy hair. To top it off, the fatty acids in eggs moisturize and condition like nothing else.
How to Use Eggs in Haircare
Much like the baking soda above, the quickest and easiest way to get the great egg effect for your hair is to add a beaten egg to your regular shampoo. Just whip up the egg and pour some shampoo in the bowl with it. Wash your hair as normal.
Alternatively, you could whip up one or two eggs (depending on your volume of hair) and rub them into dry hair. Cover with a towel or shower cap and leave on 15 minutes before washing out. And please heed the note below.
Note of Caution: As the lovely Miss Stephanie pointed out a few months ago, if you're not careful with your eggs in the shower, you could end up with scrambled hair. Make sure the water you rinse with isn't so hot as to cook the eggs. THAT would be a mess.
Who Should Use This: People who have brittle or delicate hair - or anyone just wanting to add luster, strengthening, and moisture.Lots of great tips on her site for using natural - truly natural - stuff to do your body good!
-
Since cooked eggs are loaded with Biotin, including them regularly in your diet will help hair growth also. Eggs from pastured hens are best. Swiss Chard is another good source, so add it to an omelette for extra punch. Raw egg whites however, contain a chemical called Avidin that binds/inactivates Biotin so consider that if you're adding them to smoothies or making your own mayo...(Biotin is in the yolk)
lago - congratulations on your 2 yr. NED - that is AWESOME!
jpmomof3 - your hair is incredibly thick looking for only 9 wks PFC - wow!
kjiberty - can't wait to see your updated pic...
-
Thanks CAYH, I am going to try it.. Have a great Holiday Weekend..
-
lago congrats on your 2 year NED.
I love the idea of using eggs I did not know they were beneficial to hair. I ate a lot of eggs during my chemo and after to get protein in my diet.
thanks for the info

Lago
Congrat's on 2 Years NED!
Does anyone remember Suave Egg Shampoo? I can remember my Mom buying that in the 60's and 70's. She also used to rinse our hair with water and vinigar too once in a while. I love eggs as well and have to try not to eat too many!
-
Yep, I remember it! I loved that stuff.
PS--I guess I am showing my age!
-
I'll tell you what I do: separate the eggs & use only the yolks on dry hair (saving the whites for cooking). It's way less messy this way & you know you're getting the Biotin. Then I let the yolk "mask" sit for at least 1/2 hr & shampoo as usual; AC vinegar rinse & done!
"Crunchy Betty" got me onto all sorts of beneficial natural ways to care for my skin, hair, teeth/gums & even homemade household cleaning products - some good info on eating well also. You can actually get lost in her site...& it's all good! I rarely use commercial store bought formulations at all anymore.MLB - there's lots of research out there on the myth of eggs & their cholesterol being bad for us...I eat them daily.
-
CAYH... Do you do the egg treatment everyday ? Thanks Eileen
-
Being just 16 wks. PFC, my hair is only about 3/4" long - maybe. So, I only do the egg tx twice a week & it's growing in pretty good now. I don't want to strip the natural sebum oil too often, so I do scalp massages with the surgical scrub brush daily to promote circulation...
I try hard to eat enough dense protein foods: hemp protein in my morning Kefir smoothies + a hard boiled egg on the side or my homemade version of "Holy Crap" Cereal that's loaded with Chia seeds. On the alternate days of the cereal for breakfast, I'll add a hard boiled egg to a honkin' big salad for dinner (sometimes topped with grilled organic chicken or Alaskan Salmon). I don't eat red meat or any vegetable oils anymore, so I'm not concerned about too much of the "bad" saturated fats or cholesterol - it's the right kind of fats that are beneficial: coconut, avocado, flax seed & extra virgin olive oils...
-
Oh - forgot to mention that I add 2 tsp of Blackstrap Molasses to my morning smoothies 'cause it's supposed to be very good for hair loss, strengthening the hair & some say for reverting the loss of pigment that makes your hair gray - I'm hopin'!!!
Also good for nails, too. I've had some nail issues since chemo too, so every little bit helps!

Well all you gorgeous ladies, here's my hair timeline. I am not as far along as some of you in terms of regrowth, but I'll take it. As of today, I am 15.5 weeks PFC.
-
Joan, I couldnt see your hair timeline without a password.
-

-

-

Felisaragland42 sorry to hear you will be joining the bald and beautiful club soon but welcome! You can see there are lots of ladies here that can have fun with what we have been dealt.
Myleftboob, congrats on the hat hair. My hair was actually messy one day when I came back from a walk. I was happy that it ws long enough to get messy!
Thanks ladies! I am taking biotin in the hair skin and nails vitamins from costco and using Nioxin shampoo. Who knows if it really helps but it sure can't hurt. It's hard to believe i am 10 weeks pfc. My hair is getting a slight wave to it and getting a little unruly. I am not sure when I will get it trimmed. It would be nice at some point to get those little clear ends cut off but I don't have the heart to cut off a molecule of hair yet... I am going to update my hair timeline monthly now. I still look like a marine but I am glad to be there!
Joan, I couldn't get into your photo album either. Would love to see it! -
Hmmm - I made the album public - let's see if this works....
-
Joan- I can see them now. Wow, your hair is coming in nice and dark! You look so good.
I can't wait for 15 weeks PFC. -
Well...My last chemo was April 12th. I had my first trim on Friday. I really didn't want to but was tired of the whispy stuff on the back of my neck and the hair growing around my ears. I"M SO GLAD I did it. It now has some style to it and looks a gazillion times better. So... don't be scared of a little trim!
-
That's encouraging to hear, dechi - it's starting to look like I have hair growing out the tops of my ears since it's decided to curl back towards them. And I've got a whacky hairline at my nape with one side going up while the other goes down - sorta...I also have a fair number of hairs that stand straight up & are all silver, of course - they kinda take away from the "sleek chic"ness which I'm telling myself is where it's at right now. A teeny trim to clean up may be in my near future...
Joan - thanks for posting your pics. You're looking so fine! We are TN sisters with similar histories (2 separate dx many years apart) Nice to see ya!
-
Joan, you look great! Dechi, what a great milestone, a first trim! Congrats! I think I will be in your position in a month or so. it is starting to curl in the back and sides and will be good to get it shaped.
-
Joan - your hair is coming in nicely! beautiful!
-
Joan - just spent over an hour reading your blog & must say:
I LOVE your sense of humour!
-
Joan: YOure hair is coming in nicely!
Dechi: Glad to hear your hair is coming in so nicely.
I am getting my hair trimmed (there's not much, just getting rid of the flyaways and the fuzzy stuff on the nape of my neck) and colored on Thursday. I want it back to the dark brown, not black color it's coming in. PS--I will be 9 weeks PFC this week!
Karen

Joan, You look great!
-
Bad hair day!
I am closing in on 19 weeks PFC and have a lot of thick hair, but today I had the blasphemous thought that it looked a lot cuter when it was shorter a few weeks ago. Now that it's growing longer, I feel like I'm wearing an ugly hair helmet. Anyone else? I think it needs a trim, but I am so afraid of cutting off even a millimeter! I know I should be grateful just to have hair, but I think I have moved from grateful to impatient. I am not sure it really registered just how long it was going to take for it to grow back into something resembling a cute hairstyle!
Anyone at the next stage after helmet hair...how long will it take, and should I get it trimmed?
