Athena, I don't have a link ... I just know the place of yore. There isn't enough alcohol or bleach to make me go there now.

Illinoislady, welcome! How nice you waded in to play with us! Limber up your fingers and type as the spirit moves you. You'll fit in just fine!

This will drive them nuts!  My friend's son is in the unit that got OBL (ofcourse, he can't tell his father if he was in the group that was right there when it happenned). He and his buddies very much admire our POTUS.

Welcome Jackie.  Lurking can be lonely, nice to meet you.  Thanks for posting.

I too remember the "bad old days" - we used to call the the Hanger Days.  What CLC said was, and is, so true.  I remember when it was ILLEGAL to sell condoms ( we used to call them "rubbers", remember?) in the State of MA - BUT, if you went to the drugstore to BUY them, you could AND you had to pay MA state tax on them.  AH, "the good ole days."

Well, I am also of the generation defining Pro Choice as : Abortion, safe, legal, and rare.

Or as Gloria Steinum said all those years ago: "If men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament."

Thanks for the welcome ..... don't know that I will post a lot, but I did go to the bar and get a small glass of Velvet Red from the St. James Winery.

I was taken with something 208Sandy said.....about the home town Police Chief being able to hand out fruitful 'needed' info for those who could be in dire straits.  I recall my Mom talking about one of the Church deacons in our little town ( 200 hundred or so ) sneaking in the side door of the local watering hole early every Sunday morning to secure his needed refreshments for the week.  Of course everyone was busy getting ready to go to Church.....so he was not noticed at that hour..........except my mom was going to the Church early to start the big furnace so it would be warm for Sunday School.  Being poor and having to  do things no one else wanted to do ( even if they got paid for it ) helped my mom see the light about a number of things.

I guess the point is sometimes it is a matter of perspective.  Sometimes....even what is perceived as 'the good people' are carrying a flaw if it could be but "seen", so if I don't jump on some of the current bandwagons, it is my feeling........if some of these flaws are so in your face right now.......what might I NOT be seeing.  Ok....maybe my early life taught me to be a septic and rather hard to convince....or in the present case.....oh so easy to convince.  Go ahead....say something else.

I'm getting wordy an not saying much.  Thanks again for the welcome.

This is the right wingnut philosophy: We demand that every fetus be born, but once born, you're on your own kid.

There was an article somewhere on the web yesterday about a state senator (don't know which state) but he apparently said something to the effect that "women should be prepared for rape much like he would be for a flat tire" - I don't make this stuff up - I just report it!!!

Once upon a time I was very involved with Planned Parenthood in my part of the world. We were mostly an information/education sort of outfit. Fortunately, we worked ourselves out of our jobs because the provincial government told the local health units to provide sexual health services. In my area they provide an excellent service.

I still have some of the mugs that say "Love Carefully" in splendid seventies style script and the coasters that say "Pregnancy by Choice, not Chance". When I was president provincially and expecting my first child I got to explain that we were not against pregnancy, the name of the outfit is Planned Parenthood and my pregnancy was very much planned.

To see all the efforts at moving backwards to those days when it was illegal to provide contraception information, much less services is quite frightening.

    Here ya go:

    May 2011

A recent discussion in the Kansas House of Representatives about yet another abortion bill proved some anti-abortion rights supporters couldn't be more out of touch.

The bill bans insurance companies from covering abortion insurance under general health care plans, except when the woman’s life is at risk; however, women can get around this roadblock by purchasing separate "abortion-only" polices. When lawmakers began discussing whether expecting women to purchase polices in case they were raped and impregnated against their will, Representative Pete DeGraaf compared rape to getting a flat tire -- arguing that women needed to "plan ahead" for being raped and possibly impregnated against their will much like he plans ahead for a blow-out by carrying a spare.

As you can imagine, his ridiculous comment pissed off a lot of people ...

Here's the exchange direct from the AP:

Rep. Pete DeGraaf, a Mulvane Republican who supports the bill, told her: "We do need to plan ahead, don't we, in life?"

Bollier asked him, "And so women need to plan ahead for issues that they have no control over with pregnancy?"

DeGraaf drew groans of protest from some House members when he responded, "I have a spare tire on my car."

"I also have life insurance," he added. "I have a lot of things that I plan ahead for."

Yeah, mo fo. We'll be sure to spray your car with nails. Don't expect a pity party when you have to get out on the highway and find that we also stole you spare.

    Mo fo!

Thank you Chickadee!  The newspaper article I found also printed his email address, his office number and I believe his home phone number and I gather somewhere in Kansas there is a group raising funds to send him spare tires but when they tried to deliver them to the State House they were stopped - this happened in May - it sure took a long time to "go national" - wonder how many more nuts are running around loose in this the silliest of all silly seasons?

    Kam - I sent you a PM

On the subject of rape - I haven't really been following what's going on over there but IMHO - the 'morning after' pill should be a compulsory treatment for any woman who is raped - that would solve any abortion issues wouldn't it?

Susie-there are some that would make it OK for a pharmacist to refuse to sell the "morning after" pill because it would violate their religious beliefs. It's already OK to refuse here in Washington State. The law's supporters claim that women can just shop around and find a pharmacy that does sell it, but this has affected many poor women who live in small towns that have only one pharmacy. They can't "shop around" because they don't have the means. Sometimes I feel like I'm living in medieval times.

Well except that they want to make the morning after pill illegal also.

Somebody asked for another example ... "Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) while trying to defend Akin says that "he hasn't heard of instances where young victims of statutory rape or incest become pregnant".

And I can't remember which one it was that compared women to farm animals.  Anybody else got a better memory?

The only question is if they are really that clueless or just tying themselves into knots trying to defend the indefensible.

Susie....a rose by any other name.  I think the morning after pill is looked at by some as a very early, early abortion.  They are stacking the deck on that one from the get-go.

Williams publicly made a joke likening rape to bad weather, having quipped: "If it's inevitable, just relax and enjoy it."  Ran against Ann Richards.  These are not isolated instances.  Does one have to know it's a gaffe to be able to call it a gaffe?

I believe the voters have been asleep at the wheel for some time and don't realize the idjuts they have been returning to office.

Of course it ain't easy to find out about these idjuts until they open their mouths.  The media is complicit, they are lazy and let the publicists do all the homework and provide them with the script for their "interviews".  Don't get me started on faux news.

I need to go watch me some Jon Stewart.

Not just the morning after pill....all forms of birth control, because most just prevent the implantation of the fertilized egg.
