I agree, Julz4...I am quite sure this is terrible at any age! Thank you, I can only hope that my surgery goes well!

I have only been diagnosed for a about a month and I've heard several times..."Well that's the good kind of cancer"...really???  I've also been told, "Well, at least you're not going to die" and "It could be worse".

Justegan-  I noticed that you are having a double mastectomy (sorry I don't know the abbreviations yet) and the tissue expanders, that is what I will be having next month.  I pray that all goes well and I will look for posts from you!

Well this one is a kicker.  This past Friday,I left work in search of a masectomy bra - I had heard that Nordstorms had them, but sadly we don't have one in the city.  I was heading to small boutique as an alternative and happened to pass Saks Fifth Avenue and I thought to myself, "They must have them too!"  Hopeful, I entered the lingerie department and descretly asked the saleswoman if they carried them.  She looked at me - as if she was trying to digest it all and responded, "No, but we do have nursing bras."  I didn't know what to say and I left. However, the more I think about it, the more pissed I am.  They will be hearing from me!

    Teri,
Responses like that come from people who have not been affected by breast cancer or known anyone really close to them who has. I am sorry you had to hear anything like that though...it is terrible.

Check out the August 2012 girls posting...I am sure I will post updates after my surgery on there =)

    *hugs*

Leama, don't be pissed at that comment.  Feel sorry for the woman who said it because obviously she's missing a large number of brain cells.

Having said that, it probably is a good idea to let Customer Service at Saks know what happened.  They should not have someone who doesn't have the intellectual capacity to understand the difference between a mastectomy bra and nursing bra working in their bra department. And that then is another reason to feel sorry for the woman. Because after you talk to Saks, hopefully she'll be fired.  And she'll be too stupid to understand why.

Actually, I wonder if she knows what a mastectomy is.

    Probably not.

Wow, Leama, that was definitely an ignorant comment.  I agree that you should alert Saks so that hopefully her manager can explain why the comment was offensive. Perhaps it can be a teachable moment for her. I'm surprised to see others say that they hope she loses her job; to wish that on someone seems meanspirited.  While I wasn't there, and am basing my opinion on the limited information from your post, it doesn't seem like her intention was to offend you.

Now for my own stupid thing that was said to me.  This comment was made by my DH the day we found out I was going to need a mastectomy. It was nearing dinner time and we were driving by our local Hooters, and he suggested that we stop there to eat, of all places.  He'd never suggested this before despite driving by it frequently.  I said to him, while giving him the stink eye, really, there?  He looked puzzled for a moment, realized what he'd just suggested, and apologized profusely.  I couldn't stop laughing. I mean, who says to their wife who's about to lose a boob, let's go eat at Hooters?  Since he was so upset by the news that day and is normally so sensitive, I realized he just wasn't thinking clearly.  The look on his face after he realized he'd just put his foot in his mouth was priceless.  He thought he was going to be sleeping on the couch for at least a month!

    CLP,

You have to feel slightly bad for merely because he was so remorseful lol. Awww....but that is really funny and the not funny at the same time if that makes any semblance of sense!

do not remember if I posted this before but early after my diagnosis, when I was in that "dazed what just hit me" stage, I went to the gym and was on a machine when a trainer came over and said how are you...I said I had just been diagnosed.  She replied, "well you should take my vitamins"...the ones she sells!

guess the reason we all got cancer is we were not buying HER vitamins.  Fortunately, my onco had just given me instructions that week on what suppliments I could take and what to avoid

One co-worker said, "that's the best kind of cancer to have."

Oh I can't tell you how many times I've heard that one!!

summer, I told that trainer off the next time I saw her as I explained she could actually harm someone who was in active treatment.

she told me she had researched it on line and KNEW what she was talking about...needless to say I stayed away from her and when she was still at the gym (she is not anymore) I let folks know that she was in fact, dangerous!  I never went to management but would have if she had stayed
