Hello ladies, I started chemo this past Tuesday.  I am happy to report that I am doing well however, I have this really annoying sore throat, to the point that it wakes me up.  Is this a side affect?  What should I do?

TifJ--yes, I am getting the Neulasta, but I have already had three, and had no pain with them. Yes, I am taking the Claritin, and have been on the oxycodone, most of the time for the pain. After constipation for 3 days, now i have diarrhea, and running a fever. Dr on call said to alternate Tylenol & ibuprofen, and call MO in morning. Since I am suffer from the big "C" , I wasn't prepared for the big "D", all I have in the house is Pepto tablets. Taking my Ibuprofen now, and going back to bed.

OBXK--yes, we had nice visit, but hated that his visit came during my max SE days. I don't think i can do the tower in Chicago--I can barely do escalators that are open on side. :-((

SallyO--I think the name of the ant killer was Terro ant bait, but I don't remember who posted it either.

hoping for a better day tomorrow :-)

browerl...do you get a neulasta shot the day after chemo?   I did and had swollen glands in my throat after each chemo.  It was like a sore throat on steroids--haha.  Both sides of my neck hurt and it went down into my shoulders too. Hope this is all it is for you.  Ask the doc about it if it is too  bothersome.  No need to suffer needlessly!  Glad you are doing well otherwise.

Gma- Well shoot! I had bad diarrhea as well. I took Immodium and it cleared right up. Definitely see your MO. I developed neutropenic fever after my first chemo and had to go into the cancer center everyday for a week to get antibiotics through my port. Hope you feel better soon!

Brower - the mucous membranes in your mouth and throat can and often do get irritated from chemo.  I found that I couldn't eat anything remotely spicy nor drink red wine because it burned all the way down.  Ice cream was a good antidote!  If it is bothering you, ask your doctor for a prescription for "magic mouthwash".  It's a concoction that the pharmacist can make up for you.  It should relieve your sore throat.

GERD or heartburn can also cause a sore throat.  I took Prilosec during A/C and both Prilosec and Pepcid during Taxol.

Getting IV fluids in the infusion ctr, cant get bood from port yet. Hope they can, after some hydration. Sad that i couldnt go with my son to airport, but like he said "its just a car ride to airport, mom, stay home take care of yourself" how'd he get to be so smart.

Hated that i was in such pain last night, broke down & sobbed. Think i scared DS & DH both. I try not to cry in front if them:-) didnt know what i should take for pain, & if it would mask fever, if they sent me to ER.

Nurse mentioned C-diff, that scares me. Just finished augmentin last week for the parotid infection. Who knew this road to recovery could have so many side streets & detours!!

Inmate: Sorry you have to go through this sh^t again! Sorry I can't even sugar coat it, it stinks and sucks! Enough is enough.

Nuelasta-I gave myself the shot six times. YIKES! I still can't believe I did this. I never had too much discomfort, but hey I never inserted everything fully in either. I would give up about halfway and say I think that's enough.

This board just seems to keep moving right along....

OBXK - I hope you at the very least brought insulated underwear and a very large bottle of whiskey!

Inmate - thank you for those pictures. I love your delightful impish smile.

    Jan - good luck tomorrow.

LuvB - I'm glad to hear you're at the center and getting treatment. Feel better. (thanks for giving SallyO, that info)

Brow - LuvR and everyone already gave you great advice. Like she said, make sure they check for acid reflux. (when mine is bad it presents as a sore throat, and it will wake me up with severe pain and an awful cough during the night)

LuvR - how you doing Grandma?

    Bernie - *kisses Calva*

Tazzy - are you in rads yet, and how are you doing?

Cocker - hope you are just busy getting ready for your rads?

Hope60 - still praying for you.

Kathyrnn... nope not in rads yet, that comes after surgery of which I am still awaiting a date.  BS said first couple of weeks in August sometime... so they had better get moving.  Really frustrating not knowing.   But least I am jut over 4 weeks PFC and getting stronger.  And the BS did say he wanted me to recover for 6 weeks after chemo before surgery so.... ??

Hope everyone else is doing well and enjoying the Summer as much as you can if you are getting ready for more tx or suffering SE's.

Take care all, thinking of you xxx

Hi Ladies, tomorrow morning is the CT on my organs.. they are trying to figure out the source of my pain and diarrhea (sp). I am a nervous wreck about this- but it needs to be done.

Loretta, I had the same cocktail. I also had the sore throat- try gargling with some baby liquid bendryl. So, you are not getting the nuelasta shot on teh 3rd day after? I guess each doc is different.

Inmate- you are a true inspiration of strength to all of us.

Brower-I get a sore throat and sensitive mouth with every treatment..... I gargle with 1/2 teaspoon of salt mixed with a cup of warm water. I also use Biotine mouth rinse after every brushing and eating. During the first and second cycle, I also got a few mouth sores and rinsed with the "magic mouthwash" your Onc will call in for you. This time around, I didn't get mouth sores but I was gifted with an earache along with the sore throat. An important point, check your temperature every few hours to make sure you do not have a fever. Good luck!

Lory - Is your air still smokey from the wildfire? The sky looks dirtier towards Boise from here. We need a good rain to clean things up.

My hair is getting longer, but sticking straight up! No wonder the dog looks at me funny!

Hope they find an answer for you tomorrow ~ Shar

thanks for all the advice ladies.  I have been gargling with salt water and it does feel better.  So far my blood work had been great so no shot after chemo.   I have read that salmon helps keep blood levels up so I have been eating that a couple times a week.  Lory hair looks great, I am still waiting to loose mine should be next week.

    Hi Ladies

I am hoping everyone is having a good day today.  Good luck Lory with the tests.  I hope all comes back okay and you can breathe easily again.  I think our minds make it worse for us then it is but yes any and all tests are nerve wracking.  Hang in there!!!

I woke up this morning with a bladder infection so I am on antibiotics for a week.  Not fun but there are way worse things.  Happy Tuesday xoxo

Hi Guys, just poking back in to say I finished all my rads yesterday. I have a long bad burn right under the scar, and some more higher on the chest, but other than that am OK. I also started back to work yesterday. Boy was I tired! It is good to getting back to a "normal" life though, whatever that may be. Hope you all are doing OK.

I had been wondering about you....wondered what all you had to endure with your local recurrence and how you are doing emotionally about it?  Hope all is well.

    Namaste'.

Hi ladies: Back from my holiday to Newfoundland and Labrador which was fabulous. Loads of interesting history and breath-taking scenery. Remote and peaceful. And the hospitality? - well let's just say it lives up to everything we heard about 911 and immediately after, when Newfoundlanders opened their hearts and homes to planeloads of stranded passengers.

I finally got through all the pages of posts and unfortunately can't keep up with everyone's news. Just want to shout out "cancer fuckin' sucks" to Inmate. Jeesh, you deserve a break... but that indomitable spirit of yours carries on and will prevail!!

Hope60, thinking of you too and hoping it's all a terrible mistake... or, if worse, that the good docs have put together a good plan for you to move forward with. (((hugs)))

To all the newbies, welcome, welcome. And to those in treatment, healing thoughts -- it does get better.

Sylvia, thank you! I just read your very warm welcome to Michael and I am glad he is receiving some input on his efforts. I am doing well.  I certainly have been staying busy with work the past few months.

Hope60, I just want to say that I am thinking of you.

Inmate, sending you positive thoughts, too.  I hate this disease so much and wish we had a cure now.

Annie, You out there?  Did I miss a recent post?

    Love to all,

    Christina

I went to onc today for another follow up.  I was not there long.   She asked how I felt, I told her fine and she said can I do anything for you.  I said no and she said see ya in 3 months!  lol

Waste of time?  I think so!

KS - no labs, no physical exam, no nothing?  That would be a big waste of time!

Luah - your trip sounds fabulous!  I would love to see those areas of Canada, and it's not that far away from me!
