August 2012 Radiation
Hi everyone!
Not sure if this Topic has already been started but I will be starting radiation in August and I am looking for some buddies to go through the process. I had my first appt with my radiation oncologist on April 26, when he informed me that I would be receiving 16 treatments and 5 boosters. I meet with him again on July 26, I am assuming to start the planning process for my radiation treatment.

I'm sure you will be joined by others, but while you are waiting, feel free to join us on the July 2012 Radiation thread. Most of us are just starting and will be going through August.http://community.breastcancer.org/forum/70/topic/789386?page=3#idx_85
Take care. -
Hi Rachel! I have my planning appointment with my RO on July 20th, and expect to start rads in early August so I am with you. I don't know how many rad treatments I will be getting yet, but I am going to ask about the Canadian protocol for 16...sounds so much better than 30+!!! It looks like our diagnosis is pretty similar exept my tumor was a little larger pushing me to stage IIa. Did you also do chemo before surgery? I just had a lumpectomy re-excision yesterday for two margins that were only 1mm and surgeon wanted 2mm...I didn't want another surgery but definitely wanted it all out!
I have been reading all the other rads threads and my head is spinning with all the different lotions and strategies. Thanks for starting the August group!
-
Hi crazyride43 - I had chemo after sugery. Too bad you had to had to go for a second surgery but at least you know it's all gone.
Looking for forward to going through this next step with you!
-
We can't be the only ones starting in August...maybe we're too early!

I'm another August Rads - and another Rachel! I finished chemo in May, had BMX in June, and will start radiation in mid-August. Thanks for starting the thread; I look forward to getting through this phase of treatment together.

Welcome Rachel!!
Well, I have been enjoying a week with my daughters while I am not feeling too tired or sick. I am however, looking forward to my first radiation appt on July 26, the sooner it starts the sooner it's over. :-)
-
My planning appointment is tomorrow. I'm nervous because I have been reading way too much about side effects, especially since my cancer was on the left side. I am going to ask about the Canadian protocol for only 16 treatments as well as the prone position for protecting the heart and lungs. I have a feeling I will just get whatever they have planned for me, and I should be OK with that since my RO is the head of radiation oncology at my major cancer treatment center that is at the forefront of cutting edge cancer research! I will check back in and update after my appointment...I am guessing I will start around August 6th.
-
Good luck tomorrow crazyride43. Keep us posted on what your next steps. I haven't read it into the side effects too much yet but I am sure as next Thursday approaches I will be scanning the web for all information re: radiation.
-
Hi Ladies,
I had my rads in 2007, breezed thru it without any real side effects. I'm Irish and fair skinned so I expected the worst... blisters etc. etc. nothing but a little pink skin and a lot of heat from it.
As for treatment day, it takes longer for them to set up the machine "30 min" then the treatment 45 seconds (my experience).
Some people experience low energy after, the only thing that go me tired was the drive, wait and drive home 5 days x 5 weeks of treatment so hang in there and hopefully you won't have too much of a reaction!
-
Hello girls can I join your August group also??? I just got my tats today (Yeah for me) hahaha. But as I am not healing very quickly after 2nd. lump i am put on hold. I guess I get the pleasure of doing whole breast zaps, and only 30 treatments, I opted out of the boosts. The team I met today were very nice and had a sense of humor thank goodness. So now I find myself a women of leisure as I won,t be going back to work for awhile.
-
Hi ladies, I start radiation in August too! I feel pretty UN-informed about the process and procedure but Im trying to just "go with it." Im anxious to see how Ill react to it!
-
Hello ihatemyboob, I,ve just done some generalized research on it and also learned some things from the women on this site who have gone through it. The thing i learned is everyone is different and some people "breeze" through it, some don,t. I guess we will find out ourselves hahaha. I did buy some aloe to start creaming the little puppy up, it can,t hurt. Have you had your tats and scan done yet???? I don,t have an official date yet as my healing has hit a couple of glitches ( oh what a surprise) hahaha. I basically like you am just going with it as it has to be done. So if it helps we can hang in there together and compare notes or vent on each others shoulder.
-
Hi August group!
For you, and all who join you in the next month, here's some helpful info on the main Breastcancer.org site on Radiation Therapy, including types of radiation therapy, what to expect, and how to manage side effects.
Hope this helps!

Thanx Mods very informative and thorough info- appreciate it! Have a good one!
-
Ro-berta, no I haven't had my tats or scan yet. I had an appointment with my RO and was really excited because she is very upbeat and fun. Also, with her as my RO it makes all of my Dr.s during my treatment female- kinda cool. BUT...she is leaving the practice, bummer.
-
Hey girl, I like my fols also, so I consider myself lucky. I know treatment is important but I have been more nervous about meeting Dr,s Nurses ect. and hoping that they weren,t (how do I say politley) i guess jerks hahaha. And for what it is worth the whole tats, scans were pretty easy to get through. It,s to bad your Dr is leaving , is she leaving soon? I think I am going to turn the one that is on middle of chest into a tiny anchor when I get done hahaha.
-
Sorry I missed spelled the 6th word, it is supposed to be DR,S dog jump on me.
-
Yeah, i think she'll be gone before I even begin. I plan on COVERING myself in tattoos when Im done with all of this but fear my skin will be wrecked! But of course the major motivation in wanting more tattoos was because I was told I could not have any during chemo LOL! I really want one on my head and seeing how I will be bald for quite some time PFC I'll have plenty of time to plan!
-
You could start a new fashion trend! I think what the hell rock it out girl! That sucs that she is going to be gone but hopefully you will get another good one. After all is done we should take pics of our tats even if they have to be drawn with pen hahaha.
-
Welcome ro-berta and ihatemyboobs! Looking forward to going through radiation with you gals.
I have met my RO really quickly about 3 months ago before starting chemo...I meet with him again next week, for what I am assuming is my planning appt.
Too bad ihatemyboobs that you are losing such a nice RO, hopefully your next RO is just as nice.
-
Hi rachel ,glad to be here sharing ( I mean there could be worse places, I,m sure) So did you get good vibes from your R.O ???? I have a man also but he was older and appeared layed back and relaxed. I am just waiting for my poor old boob to heal. The incision is fine but the rest of it is being difficult hahaha. Least getting the planning stage done is one step closer to getting things over with. So do you guys think your patience as a trait has grown through this????
-
Hi August rads team! So happy to see a few more of us. I met with my RO on Friday and had my planning session. I really, really like my RO. She is patient and thorough and just a sweetheart. I met with the nurse, then my RO, then went into the planning sessions which was a CT scan. I will be doing the breath holding technique because of my left sided tumor to avoid the heart, so I had to hold my breath for a few seconds for the scans. I now have four little dot tattoos that look like blackheads, two along my sternum and one on each side of me at the bra line. It all happened pretty quickly and painlessly - all the meetings and planning took about 90 minutes total. I will be getting 22 whole breast rads with 8 boosts to the tumor site, although my RO did say she "might add a few more at the end". Um...hopefully not??!! The RO nurse was awesome and it sounds like they will be giving me all the creams I need right at my cancer center. They also said to use only natural deodorant (I bought some Tom's of Maine) on the rads side. I have some Weleda baby calendula lotion that I love and I will use that leading up to my first treatment on August 7th to get my skin as ready as possible. My RO said that the first two weeks will probably be fine, the next two I may have some minor pain, swelling and skin changes, and the last two weeks will be the toughest but will pass quickly. I really hope she's right! Hmmmm...I am really, really hoping I am one of the lucky ones that doesn't get too much skin breakdown!
ro-berta, I don't think I have more patience because of all this cancer treatment, but I do think my "control freak" tendencies have really decreased!
-
Hi crazyride, got a good chuckle about the "control freak" remark. I also will be getting full breast treatment ( doesn,t that sound inviting hahaha) I kinda turned down the boosts all i could see in minds eye was a little bright red boob ouchie. I,m thankful we have this forum to spout because as helpful as my guys are i have to watch what i say ( humor also) so i don,t upset them, I just got some aloe and will start using that right away I will be getting 30 treatments. well hopefully girls we will get by just fine! I will raise a glass to all of us.
-
Hello, I start my rads 1st August and go for markings and Tattoo's this Wednesday. I am having rads to my neck, lymph nodes, left under arm and left breast. Not looking forward to the tattoo's as I will have it near the neck and it will show. (Having three wks of rads but I think it's the bad shit I'm getting)
Had very bad SE with chemo and Lumpectomy so I know rads will be no different for me. Have started Tamoxifen today for five years then something else for another five years( great )
Hope we can all jolly each other along ( I will need it)
Alison -
Alison, we will definitely be here to support each other! I have found that anyone not going through breast cancer treatments - no matter how much they love and care about me - just get tired of hearing about every little thing that I am going through. After six months of treatments and another few to go, I think everyone is thinking "aren't you done with all this yet?"!!!! How is your hair coming along? Mine looks like a scruffy wild animal took up residence on my head, but at least it's hair
So your MO is having you take the Tamoxifen at the same time as radiation? Mine wants to wait until afterwards so the side effects don't get muddled. Part of me is glad, and part of me wants to start taking it as soon as possible to do everything possible to make sure this stupid cancer never comes back! I read somewhere that despite the side effects, it's something to feel glad about that there is a medication available to help keep cancer at bay for ER+ women. I hope I will still feel glad AFTER I start taking it LOL!
ro-berta, I hope your incision is healing up, and I admire you for saying no to the boosts! I like to think of myself as an advocate, but when it comes to cancer treatments I pretty much do whatever my doctors recommend for me. Maybe I will get some "cancer kahoonas" by the time it comes to my boosts!
My start date for rads is August 6th
-
hi girls! first don,t admire me ,i am not taking boost because for me I have such adverse effects to meds such as heart, blood pressure ect. and am allergic to all antibiotics reactions ranging from cardiac arrest to hives ect. so i said no to boosts just to cut my time down and chances of needing additional meds hahaha. my incission is fine but my boob is not healing??? still swollen have s section that is like a red rash but the skin is bumpy and my pain throughout. Sorry for venting just in a quandry as to what it might be. I have had 5 lumps and never had this happen before, You guys got any ideas??? has this happened to any of you? Anyway since we are women and tough anyone else sweating their balls off in this heat hahaha?
-
I had a problem because of radiated skin and unfortunately had to have my implants removed and I had to go to the Care Nurse everyday for wound healing.
The Nurses recommended that I start doing protein shakes using the Whey Protein as it would help speed up recovery. I went to Costco and got the plain stuff without any added fake sugar etc., it worked so fast it was crazy. I'm not sure why you are having a reaction but maybe this might help.
I just added it to fruit and ice or plain milk in a blender and took 1 scoop every day.
I am now doing fat graphs to build my new foobs and my skin is doing great now from the stem cells in my own fat!
-
Hair- I had cold cap ( machine ) I live in UK but it didn't work very well. I was bald on top but kept the hair from top of ears down. I had long hair but had it cut just below my chin, after last chemo it started growing very fast. My bald patches are covered and I go out without a hat, not sure if I would have it again.
I had lots of fluid with my lumpectomy and had it drained, still got a few lumps and bumps.
I have got normal and solar urticaria so not looking forward to rads. I asked if I had to have rads to the arm pit and she said if I didn't it would be 50/50 they could cure me again. Even though I have had all lymph nodes removed cancer can come back in arm pit within the tissue. ( bloody great I said so if that happens and they can't treat me I would be stage 4) I thought If you took out all the nodes that was it.
My DH has had enough of this cancer and now thinks I should carry on as before. -
Hi everyone!
Welcome Ali68!
@ro-berta - I ment my RO very quickly, my initial vibe on him was so/so, I think I will get a better read on him on Thursday when I see him again.
I am feeling pretty good since my last and final treatment almost 3 weeks ago. I spent a nice week with my daughters last week, they are aged 7 and 10, I planned an outing for each day like bowling, movies or shopping. It was nice to get back into Mommy mode a bit... I have been trying to get back to a normal life as much as possible since my last treatment.
-
I am starting rads July 30 so I am doing the July Rad group, Aug Rad Group, and the Summer Rad group. I figure we can all get through this together!
