I haven't been to BCO for awhile, but wanted to drop in and give a heads up to those of you who use cruelty-free products- Urban Decay and Revlon have chosen corporate greed over ethics, and have moved into selling their products in China, which means they are no longer cruelty-free brands.
Tarte and Too Faced are still ok, as far as I know, and LUSH are developing a line of color cosmetics. -
I need a recommendatoion on a mascara that really does not flake or smug, not just advertize that it does. Anybody? I hate looking like a raccoon at the end of the day.
Thanks.
-
I have been using lancome for years - I haven't had trouble with flakes - though it is a bit pricey!
-
I'll second the Lancôme. My lashes use to be so long that I would get a line of black polka dots under my eyebrows from the mascara. It stopped when I switched to Lincoln. (wish I Still had those lashes)
-
And does the lancome come off easy? I have been using mabelline and I too look like a raccoon, my eyes can't take all the wiping to get the stuff back off again.
So does lancome clean up better? I would gladly pay the price to not stress my eyes...
-
I use coconut oil and it comes right off, easily.
-
I use purity by philosophy and it takes all my makeup off easily.
-
I use L'Oréal Telescopic Explosion Mascara non waterproof. I don't put any on my bottom lashes. It seems silly to put concealer to lighten up the dark circles under your eyes then make your bottom lashes dark. Granted I have big eyes but I do wear eyeliner so that enough.
Ironically L'Oréal and Lancome are the same company.
-
I started using Lancome when my lashes came back.. love it.. no smudging. Washes of easy.. Worth the few extra $$

Just found this and added it to my favs. I will admit I have not read all 18 pages....but what I have read is great! I just hope I don't repeat too much....
1. CoverGirl Mascara in brown (yellow tube). I use this on my eyebrows. Way more natural looking than a pencil, attaches to even the finest fuzz and does not rub off. In almost a year, it has never smudged and is simple to remove.
2. Use your blush as you eye color foundation. If its creamy...that's a bonus. Makes your entire look come together and it Really doesn't matter what other colors you add.
3. Concealer should be in at least two shades. The lighter of the two go along the jaw line, down your nose, above the corners of your mouth, the center part of Your forehead and under the outter half of the skin under your eyes.
The darker shade is for what's left.
4. Coconut Oil....organic/cold pressed. I use this for everything!
-all over moisturizer
-make up remover
-hair mask (oh that's a treat)
-sun tan lotion (haven't burned yet)
-delicate skin care
-mouth rinse (kills germs....but hasn't done anything for my potty mouth...)
-Omega 3 and 6 fats (absorb thru skin)
-Puppy treats...LOL so true....he just loves the stuff
-just trying this with a friend....using it for Psoriasis. Not sure on how well it works yet but it did immediately make his elbows and knees appear softer and more natural!
-radiation burn sites (it has a very low melting point....it goes on like melted butter....ahhhhh.) -
I was out of those cotten rounds that are used to remove nail polish. Had old towel, cutoff little square and used to remove polish. Worked better
-
I don't take my mascara off every night (when I do use it). I let it kind of 'wear' off. If I have to, I touch it up as needed. This way I'm not constantly rubbing at my eyes.
I'm one of the ladies who posted to use regular foundation (powder/or liquid) as a concealer under the eyes. I learned that from Carmindy and it works better than any "concealer" I've ever bought!
Any "light reflecting" foundation takes 10 years off your life! Honest!!

Checking in to share my new discovery for treating the wrinkled shoeleather face resulting from having every drop of estrogen sucked out of your body. Yikes! Kinda freaky to age 10 years in 3 months.
Anyway, I am a cheapskate, so I looked at nivea stuff. They have a "rescue lotion" which I use as my night cream. Then they have an anti-aging hand cream with UV filters and I use that during the day. So far it has really helped. -
and Nivea smells very nice.
I am very sensitive to scents at the moment.... good and bad ones. I had to spend 2 hours on a mission to find a scentless deoderant.
-
apple I too hate all that scented stuff. There are some scents I can deal with but for the most part they need to be subtle. Wish they would stop putting scents in stuff. If I want to smell pretty I would buy cologne!

So many great pieces of advice. My latest is Smashbox's line of cosmetics. I am pretty careful about what I'll use based on cosmeticsdatabase.org (who knows if it really matters). Tamoxifen and treatment made my skin very dry and bizarre--it's sorta scaly and rough. I use a Clarisonic, followed up with coconut oil. I tried a million products, and none did anything but damage on my pocketbook. Smashbox has a great BB cream with sunscreen, it's good. But my favorite is their eyebrow pencil, which is like pencil lead and presharpened. The color is much more natural. The brow shadow was easy, but not good for my skin tone, the color was very green-brown. Smashbox is much more warm, good for Spring and Fall ladies.

I just recently started using St Ives Apricot Facial Scrub again. I had eradicated all products that weren't 100% organic and natural, and have now decided that I have a *live* a little bit, just for the sake of looking better.I also just purchased Makeup Forever foundation at Sephora, mainly because I need better coverage while at work. I usually work from home, so I figure wearing something "unnatural" only a few times a month when I travel is better than not enough coverage. I also purchased a Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer that works pretty nicely as well.Oh well, not organic, and probably not on the "safe" list, but I was desperate for some coverage!!1

Barbe1958 - I've tried just about every mascara, I think! My fave is this...Lancome's Cils Booster XL Super-Enhancing Mascara Base (it's $23 at Sephora) then Make Up Forever mascara (also about $23).
-
Josie Maran's products! I LOVE them! Her products have Argan Oil in them and she sells bottles of pure Argan Oil. You can use it like coconut oil....on your hair, skin, everywhere. It doesn't leave oil stains....soaks right in. Very moisturizing.

Joni, does it lengthen? I have short stubby lashes that you can't see very well. I use the mascara to work almost like a liner, just to give definition to my eyes. But, strangely, if I put on liner, I look like a hooker!! Go figure! My girls can do their eyes beautifully with kohl and liner, but I just look dumb. Yet, I let my mascara drag my bottom lashes to give a smudge dark look. Why can't I just do that with a stick of something? What's my problem?
-
Barbe- It really does make your lashes look longer. I don't like to just draw a line with liner. I think I look stupid that way, too. So, I smudge the liner. I use the other end of the liner and just smudge. I think it really makes a difference.
-
i've learned some eyeliner techniques from my daughter that make my eyes look fantastic. i take a white, rather shimmery pencil and line the inner eye corners, top and bottom.. i draw a blue line across the center of the eye lid.. it's pretty bright with shimmer, then line the outer corners with black... and blend a bit.. and line the bottom with a fairly large dark amount of liner.
i put a pale shadow over most of the eyelid and then a darker one in the crease and corners. This is pretty different than what I've done before.. (not worth explaining).
sparkles (very subtle) accumulate below my eyes. I use a very pale foundation under all this and a pale powder in the inner corner where you get the dark circles.
People have actually been commenting lately
I'm not the best at makeup but this looks pretty good.

Apple, I think your new eyes call for close up pics so we all can learn from your DD.
-
apple, that sounds very pretty - please post a pic!

Hi ladies, just looking for a little advice as I continue to experiment. I have had a lot of trouble with my eyes watering when I wear eye makeup. I use a top-line creaseproof/waterproof shadow base that I've used for some time (pre-BC and chemo), Bare Escentuals loose mineral shadows, and Clinique Quickliner. I have sensitive eyes so while I love the look that Apple describes (some people call it "tightlining" the "waterline"), I had to give up on that awhile ago. My eyes are dry on chemo and not much helps (I confess I like the GenTeal gel but just can't deal with putting it in 5-6 times a day because you can't see through it all that well!). I haven't even tried to wear my contacts through the chemo.
Anyway, I have noticed the watering is much worse since I lost my lashes. I have been careful not to do the liner too low and I haven't worn false eyelashes but once, and I am thinking the watering is from the loose eyeshadows getting into my eyes thanks to my lack of lashes. Have you noticed anything like that? I'm going to try my pressed shadows tomorrow and see how that works (I have some good ones that aren't big-time prone to fallout), but just wondering. Thanks!
-
I'll try to take a photo with the DD's help.. i don't know. .. in the mirror it looks pretty good. in photos, it looks pretty normal. my eyebrows are returning and are pretty erratic.. i have a gap in the middle of both brows.. I almost am thinking of shaving them off until they all grow back... but no way. i do have a few lashes.. just put on a bit of mascara!
flash ? no flash?

Indigo....are you drinking enough water? Also, since I don't know too much about ya, you're poor little eyeballs have no protection from the elements....maybe wear eye cover as much as possible....especially outside. It sounds like you might be interested in permanent makeup?
-
You may be right. I slam down as much water as I can right around chemo but kind of taper off as it gets further into my cycle. However, I do notice the constant watering only when I wear the eyeshadow so I'm pretty sure it's causing it for some reason.
Permanent makeup is a form of tattooing, right? I'm kinda chicken about that and anyway, pretty sure I'd have to wait until after chemo. Did you try it? -
Indigo, I didn't know there was any kind of dry eye shadow except pressed! Aren't all eye shadows in a 'pan'. Having said that, have you tried a gel or liquid eye shadow? That may keep your lids moist as well.
I use a shimmer light powder at my inner eye, as per Carmindy and it really brightens my eyes too. Sometimes that's all I'll put on with face powder. (and clothes...ehhehehehe)
-
Indigo I know my ophthalmologist mentioned that I had some brownish glittery specs in my eye. I don't wear brown eyeshadow! It was from the powder bronzer I use. The eye shadow I use is bobby brown… but I do have lashes (although not as many as before). Maybe experiment with brands. I would think some of the less expensive stuff may have a tendency to fall off. I also put my eyeshadow on fairly soon after I put my moisturizer on. That might help it stick
