I love that commercial, Rosemary! I have to say I thought of this group when I saw it.

So did I. I laugh everytime it comes on.

I'm in lalaland. Pain is better though. They are making women's panties with possum pelts in Australia! ttyl!

Athena---I am so inept on things computer. What was your last post pointing out. I know most of you understood, but I'm thinking (maybe?) it is a list of threads you follow? Since I don't post very often you may not realize I' m asking a sincere question. I'm here everyday at least once because I really have enjoyed this thread so much and learning what kind of fun you all have, the way you "sound" when you are talking to each other seriously, humouresley{spelling},fuming and in REPRESSED anger. However,Athena,I don't know what the </ & > things are about. OOOOOOH! I think I just found
out how to make spaces for new thoughts--------No I didn't------Love to you all-------kad2kar
-
kad2kar - Apologies - my computer cuts and pastes "Active Topics" with all the code. If you can overlook the gibberish (hard to do - I should have cleaned it up), you will see that it shows more time in between posts than usual, meaning that people post less.
-
Morning Everyone!
Kad2kar .. I wasn't sure about Athena's post either, cause it had all that code in it.
Blue .. Glad to hear you're in lalaland, which is much preferable than the terrible pain you've been having. I woke up with a killer headache today and took a pain pill with my coffee. I'm feeling a lot better now.
Well .. it's already 91 degrees here, very hot and muggy. I ran my errands early today and now I have to walk Tank in this heat. He could care less about how hot out it is. I'll be sweating bullets hiking back up the hill!
love to all,
Bren
-
Bren my condolences. Here is the situation in our nation's capital, courtesy of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (noaa.gov):
Heat Advisory
Hazardous Weather Outlook
This Afternoon: Sunny and hot, with a high near 98. Heat index values as high as 101. Northwest wind around 6 mph.
Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 79. Light west wind.
Thursday: Sunny and hot, with a high near 99. Heat index values as high as 102. Northwest wind between 3 and 6 mph.****
I think I will have to retire to my den....acacia trees won't do it.
-
OMG Athena ... we're only forecast for 95 degrees today! And it's humid out. I feel for you living in that swamp in the summer. It's so bad here, the normal breeze isn't even blowing today.
hugs,
Bren
-
sheesh - our high is lower than your low, Athena. I'm not too sure if I'm jealous or happy!

-
Yes, they had the 10 year old boys baseball team to practice for 4 hours today in Virginia!
We encouraged it to end after 2 hours and they let them go home.
Some words were mentioned about "being a man" etc.
Seriously? what part of heat advisory do they not understand?
-
Susieq58...Thanks for missing me.:) This gives you an idea of how often I come on here. Your post was from the 12th of June. I HATE this format and it seems so do a lot of people. So why do they keep it??? I don't know. I also think it's such a waste of space...as I stare at the empty space on the left side if this page. What's up with that?
It is good to see Blue and all the rest and to see what is up in all your lives.
I've been doing a 'plein air' competition in a town about 45 minutes from here. It goes on for a week and a half and tomorrow we turn in 2 paintings, done on site....outside in a designated area, and then they will be auctioned off on Friday night of this week.
Weather here is in the 90's for the last few days and it takes the 'umpff' out of me. I do hate this getting older stuff. Meanwhile the caterpillars are eating all my lovely plants....Ugh. Hate them too. Do you think I need an attitude adjustment? What is wrong with me? Well, it was good to get some things off me chest, but I do wish I could do it more often without so much EFFORT!
-
Ang7-"Be a man." Grrrrrrrrrr..........
Grown men football players have died after workouts in the heat. That coach should be happy no one passed out or worse.
It's about 70 here in Seattle, and I am loving it. We have had one of the crappiest late springs I can remember.
Mary
-
I think your attitude is just fine, artsee - I would worry about someone who did NOT complain about this weather! Good luck in your plein air - hope it doesn't turn into plein heat stroke!
-
Athena - I think you should move to the Pacific Northwest. We rarely have extreme heat or extreme cold and when we do it only lasts a day or two. What we do have is a lot of clouds.....
-
I'm thinking that too. :-)
-
Athena-----Thank You!
Bren----- and all the gals back in the East, you should move to the southwest our humidity was only 3degrees, oh wait the heat index 97 and our temp going on 8:00pm is 104, tomorrow's high 112 or that was today with 108 on Thursday, 113 on Friday.BUUUTT it is DRY except when a monsoon thing comes on
Blue----So glad you are back even if you bring lalaland with you.
When I push enter and the spacebar at the same time I can make a new paragraph.
Love to all--------------kad2kar

Kad2kar ... I lived in Southern Utah for two years and I loved every minute of it. The most beautiful place I've ever lived. I'd go back in a heartbeat if I could find a way. I had a wonderful log cabin in the southern mountains. It did snow in the winter, but the summers were perfect.
Athena ... I think you would love the Pacific Northwest. When we visited my cousin in Medford, OR, last fall, I fell in love with the area.
Ang ... I hate that "man up" bullshit. I went through many years with my son in little league and some of the coaches were just awful.
Well, it's going to be another hot one today. Need to get dressed and walk Tank, then start mowing the south 40.
Hope everyone has a great day.
hugs,
Bren

I'm on my way to knock the lights out of whoever said "man up." Let me at'em!
Artsee, lovely to "see" you. I too have stopped visiting BCO as often, or posting, just toooo much of a hassle, scrolling, can't find & my "bottom line" is it's inconsiderate of the women who helped "create" what the discussion boards became, ( past tense) - not as eager to seek the "new" questioners, much less of a feeling of community.
I'm not complaining about the weather, guess all can guess why folks come to the western hills, Berkshires of MA. Hot temps, all trees, breeze, shades down in main room to keep out the sun - deliciously WONDERFUL in winter to have all south facing windows in this little cabin, but Shades Down for hot summer days. So perfect for me, at this time in my life, after years and YEARS in big cities, which I loved, feel's like being on just the right "path."
Good news: a combination of ground up chilli peppers ( in old coffee grinder), chili powder, seems to be keeping the chipmunks away. Friend said she thinks they may be voles ( which are also adorable) - but NOT when they chew the roots of my veggies.
Stay cool everyone...
-
SunflowersMA,
Ground up chili peppers will keep chipmunks or voles away? I will just have to try that. We have voles or what ever they are digging up our yard. I am so tired of the mess they make in my yard. I will have to get some and give it a try.
-
Kira
YES - not the birds, they dig up each and EVERY sunflower seed I plant - can't "taste" hot. BUT, chipmunks, voles - seems to work. Gotta be RIGOROUS with it, reapply after rain. I add CHILI powder, and cayenne pepper to the hot peppers, and have an old cofee grinder ( stopped drinking coffee years ago) and make up a mixture of it. Sprinkle a little every day, esp. after I water the garden.
IF, it's not a veggie garden, the other things which works is MOTH BALLS - a friend puts them down inthe holes they dig, mixes it up with a little of the dirt - and they stay away - HOWEVER, they DO dig new holes ;-)) So I made up a mixture of my concoction for her. She said it's helping....
-
Chili pepper also works if you have neighborhood cats that are using your flower beds as a cat box! We have flower beds right by our front door, and the smell was not nice. I sprinkled chili powder in there, and no more cats.
Upper 70's predicted here in Seattle today-perfect. Then we're back to rain as usual for the next several days. Summer arrives in fits and starts here.
Mary
-
Summer arrives in fits and starts - IF it arrives at all!!!
Don't mind me, I'm just whining... -
Summer is here in full steam. Temperatures in the mid 90s ad it looks as though it will only get hotter. Along with the heat, we are in a drought.
-
Ah yes, the man up thing...grrrrr. My youngest played Little League this year (first time) and his ever supportive family went en masse to nearly every game. We were all horrified at the way some coaches spoke to the boys. And by all I include his 12 year old sister and his 14 year old brother. It was exactly the sort of talk & treatment that made me not want my kids in team sports. I have my fingers crossed for next year because if he gets assigned to some people they will get quite an earful from our family.
Just in case no one recalls my rants on summer from prior years, I hate hot. I hate humidity. In grad school I swore a solomn oath never to live in the DC area again because I figured growing up in that swamp for 20+ years was ample punishment for any one person.
I love the PNW. I don't care if it gets cloudy. I look out my office window even as I type and I see a big honking mountain over 100 miles away. Mountain. And visability of over 100 miles. And no humidity. And no bugs. Did I mention the lack of humidity?
What I find amazing is that on those rare occassions the thermometer has hit triple digit here, my body goes right to EastCoast mode and I tolarate it far better than those who didn't do their 20+ years in a swamp.
As for voles and moles, yesterday at my farmer's market the naturalist told me that moles&voles go on a three year cycle from lots to little. No particular reason but the owls and other predators love it. Now if I can only figure out the best way to attract owls to my front lawn!
-
Speaking of heat -- the thermometer hit 33C (91F) here yesterday, with just as much heat today. But of course it feels at least 10 degrees hotter because of the humidity (we call it the humidex factor up here in the GWN). But a thunderstorm predicted tonight will bring cooler, fresher weather tomorrow (and yes, my fingers are crossed!).
I went for many years never suffering a mosquito bite and this year I've had at least 4. Anyone know a simple, homegrown remedy for taking away the itch?
P.S. My DH is quite angry at our garden chippy because he's eaten off the stem of the one and only climbing cucumber plant a number of times. If this keeps up, maybe we'll have to wait til Christmas for the first "cucumber of the season"!
-
3mm
Cement or Plastic owls are used as "decoys" to scare away digging creatures, BUT, they'll also scare away the birds. Well, I guess it's the 3 year cycle we're in. A woman at the garden nursey the other day ws in buying MORE marigolds for her egarden border, she said as she planted them, in a long row, she WATCHED as the chipmunks dug up the ones farest away but just planted! I wish they weren't so darn cute, voles too....chirp chirp chirp sounds as they gambol over the stone walls around my house - just WAITING for me to go away so they can munch! Saw a vole for the first time the other day too, they REALLY are such cute little things....
-
I bought one of these (Solar-powered Mole Repellers) for my Mom; she's got moles everywhere. Her outside cat, Rosie, kills some, but can't keep up. She put it in her back yard and it is now mole-free, so I just went back and bought a 4 pack for her to split with my sister, who is also having problems.
-
Man, this is some impressive arsenal you folks are exchanging stories on. All I have is Raid.
-
Moles laugh at Raid. And chipmunks have been known to roll mothballs dropped into their burrows right back out again.
-
I would agree with raid it did us no good at all. I wish I knew if what we had was moles or voles because it seems that is important to know.
