Well, I should admit, I didn't improve on a PR. My PR was pre-BC and I haven't got back to that yet. But my PR was only 2:43, so it certainly seems do-able! And my target is far off: the November Wine & Dine Half. A friend was trying to tempt me to do the 2013 Disney Marathon Weekend (the Donald Duck Half) and I just might. I have a business trip to Orlando the following week.
Congratulations on your time, orangemat. I think the coaching is a good idea. Was thinking of that as I watched all the people in matching shirts religiously pacing with their bunnies. Have to figure out how to do it. I can't run with my sound processor (it doesn't like sweat and tends to fall off) and I don't know of any training groups in ASL here at the moment. I learn so much here reading what people do, so keep it up, folks! :-)

Sounds like you both did terrific! Happy for you (and goldlining, I know you love your medals)!!
My victory today was getting out for my longest distance yet, 7.25 miles with a refreshing rainy last mile. Felt like I was slogging along but time-wise, I was surprisingly on-track. For confidence reasons if nothing else, I needed to get that kind of continuous mileage in. NOW I'm ready for my first 10K!
-
Congrats to all you racers!
C25K week 4, workout 3, done. I'm a bit scared of week five!
-
Bad week last week... crazy busy, and I only ran once. So started off this week on the right foot.... ran pretty well. Will try to run every day this week.... even with two job interviews and my son's middle school graduation thrown in there.....

Hi All! My, you are all so motivating!! My first of 4 Taxol treatments is behind me! Thanks to those who helped calm my fears!! It was not better (or worse) than the A/C, just different - as a lot of you said. Lots of fatigue, muscle and bone pain = lots of sofa time and lots of reading. Since A/C treatment #3 I had decided that "pushing" through any type of workout, running or otherwise, the first 3 days post chemo is just not worth it for me. So as usual I layed low and did nothing much but a short walk with the old doggie until Saturday. By then I felt fairly decent and did a hilly hike/run (still hiking the steep hill sections up) for 80 minutes! I was back on the mountain bike Sunday!
I am content looking and picking out running races to target this fall and winter in prep for Goofy Challenge 2013!
My WBC was super high today so my ONC is going to have me skip the Nuelasta shot on my next Taxol round. Anyone out there done that? I am all for it decreasing the bone pain! Off to see the PS about a recon date, fingers crossed for the week of July 30!
Keep runnin' everyone!

Congrats goldlining. Isn't amazing as to what we can do?

Haven't been here for a while -- some personal challenges. I've had a really bad right shoulder (same side as lumpectomy and radiation) -- i went to the functional mobility clinic at the hospital, they suggested an MRI -- my family GP called me and quite alarmingly said, "something is unusual, could be metastic bone cancer, better get an xray and see your onc." Needless to say that cost me a week of gut churning stress -- only to find out it was nothing. In fact my onc was very annoyed at my GP for even suggesting it. Now i am just seeing a phsio.
Running kept me (paritally) sane that week. Now i am back and totally energized -- did 7km in just over 36 min -- my fastest ever! I've been running with my daugther (she's 40 egad!) and I love it.
Did the Toronto Becel Ride for Heart this weekend -- 50 km bike ride -- soooo proud of my two grandaughers 8 and 11 -- they both did it -- and in respectable time too.
Not as into races as all you -- i just like to run every day but i am building up distance just in case i'm up to a half or whole Marathon this fall.
Regarding heat -- it kills me too but i would add, try running early if possible -- we often went out at 6 am -- the nice thing is it was cooler and even for our longest runs we were home by 10 ready for the rest of the day. Although be careful -- you may have a nap attack later.
One weekend we went to a B&B in Stratford to see a play (Shakespearian Festival). We got up at 6 did our long run -- came back 3 hours later and dropped into their swimming pool to cool down -- got dressed, had lunch and went to a 2:00 play -- in a lovely cool dark theater -- you guessed it -- we both fell asleep.

Now I am really ruminating over the Disney (Donald Duck Half) Marathon. Pro: I have a seminar to present in Orlando the following week, and be there for no additional airfare. Con: I had been tentatively thinking I would try to get my DIEP "fine tuning" done over the Xmas break, after exams (or even during exams) so I can be healed by the start of Winter term. I would expect to be up to handling work in a couple of weeks, but probably not up to the jiggling of a Half. If I am going to sign up for the Half (and I'd need to do it asap, as the Goofy is already 67% full), I'd postpone the touch-up until after Winter exams. I think this board is the only place that would understand my dilemma. There is no medical urgency for the touch-up - although I definitely notice the asymmetry. I just assume somebody somewhere would think if I am not urgently pursuing it, maybe it's not necessary, or that the medical powers that be don't like cases to be lingering unfinished. I hadn't discussed timing with the surgeon other than "at a time when it doesn't bugger up my work like it has the past two years", so it's not like I'm putting off a tentative date. But I could squeeze it in at Xmas, if I don't do the Duck Half. Is this a healthy life priority or insufficient attention to getting my medical books closed?

paradiju, so glad your shoulder is in the physio department and not the onco department! Naughty FP!
(Your FP is the opposite of mine. Mine was a BC denier until the day my lumpectomy path came back.)

Gold - I had my DIEP in October 2008. I didn't schedule my Stage II DIEP till July 09 for my own convenience. Unfortunately I had a reaction to the suturing materials and spat out a lot of stitches, leaving me with a lot of scarring. I ended needing two more surgeries for final touch up. I was SO sick of surgeries by that time, I didn't schedule the first one till Thanksgiving of 2010, over a year later, and scheduled the final one over Thanksgiving of 2011.
So I completely understand taking your time! It took me 4 surgeries from October 08 till November 11 to finish up recon. But scheduling it at my convenience allowed me a minimal disruption of work, and gave me the opportunity to fully recover and get in shape between surgeries. I was comfortable being "half baked" because I knew I'd finish at some point. Schedule things when YOU want to schedule them.
Also, my ps had me on strict lifting and "no jiggling" restrictions for 6 weeks after each surgery. I adhered to that, as I didn't want to compromise any results after waiting so long. But that meant no running, ellipticalling, weight training, etc. So be sure to factor that into your calculations.
-
goldlining, I scheduled my UMX around the Ragnar Relay I was doing last May. And I delayed my most recent surgery (revision to switch to a smaller implant) until after the Disney Marathon in January. I don't see this method of planning to be having skewed priorities. My priorities are exactly how they should be.
paradiju, sorry about all the shoulder shenanigans you've had to go through. Glad it's being attended to properly now, though.
Good to see you in such a positive mood, TriChick! Yes, keep adding those races to the calendar!
Adey, way to go on cranking out that C25K! I can't remember, do you have a race scheduled for when you're done with the 9 weeks?
Hope everyone else is feeling well and running happy!

Hi,
May i join?
I am 1 month out from all my treatments. And recently started running/walking. I went out three times this week. I have runner friend at work. I did 3.6 miles today, but hours later here i am still gasping for that last bit of breath.
Maybe i am pushing myself too far too soon? Theres a half marathon in nov i am training for.
I am exhauasted -
Take it easy Fran, and be kind to yourself. November is a long time away...
Happy National Running Day everyone! Though it should really be called International Running Day, since running knows no borders.
Run happy and healthy, everyone!
-
fredntan - I've put you on the calender. Do you have a little more info about your half, like date, location?
-
Good luck with training fredntan!
C25K week 5, workout 1 done. I just noticed when I looked at the end of the program that it expects 10 minute miles! Wah, that's 6 miles an hour, no can do. Maybe someday but right now I just want to make it off the couch! (c:
Happy running day.
-
Adey - I'm not fast at all - I average 12:30 minute miles. And there are a number of people slower than I am - I haven't finished last yet. Even in my 10K I ran that slowly, and still finished 62/77 in my age group. At that speed, I can keep running and I don't walk at all - that's victory enough for me right now.
Maybe some day I can line up with the 10-minute-and-under people, but now I just look for the 12+ minute mile marker and put myself happily in that group. Like you say, making it off the couch is a big deal.
You've really stuck with the C2K program - you haven't done a race yet, right? I think you're going to love your first race, no matter what speed you run!
-
Thanks Nats! I hope to find a 5K in August to try.
-
Firstcall, its nov 10th, american family fitness half marathon.
Then i had signed up forColor Me Rad 5k in richmond va july 21, but i think i will probably might be in sc then -
Running ...running. Friday I ran 4.69 miles, yesterday I ran 5.08 miles and today I ran 5.54. I am going to concentrate on the positives today and those are my positives. I've been really struggling with fatigue and depression and I've definitely been spending too much time reading some threads here on BCO that have got me down rather than helped to pick me up. And so ... I'm going to stick with just a couple threads - my besties in February 2012 Chemotherapy and this running thread - and maybe the Illinois Ladies too. And I'm going to lace up those shoes and head out the door each and every day. And today when I go in for Taxol #7 I'm going to have a smile on my face
Have a super day everyone!
-
Ok...... so there's a 5K in August called Run Like A Champion, or close to that. Anyway, at the end of the race there is breakfast........ eggs, meat and beer! Cracks me up. (c:
-
There's also an Elvis is Alive one, fun stuff!
-
dltnhm, I know exactly what you mean about how some threads just suck you down into their negativity... When I first joined BCO, I found myself losing my usual positive perspective because I was being influenced by those conversations. You need to surround yourself in an environment that will aid in your healing, both physically and emotionally. The running culture is one that works great for me, which is why I'm so happy to be in this thread. If you're looking for some other positive-minded company that's exercise and fitness oriented, there's a lovely group over on the Let's Post Our Daily Exercise thread. (I'd post the direct link but I don't know how todo that on my iPad, sorry!)
Anyway, I hope everyone has gotten a chance to move a bit today, run and/or walk, for National Running Day. And if not, there's always tomorrow! -
Ran my livestrong weight loss program for 40 minutes... did about 2.8 miles so not terrible. Tomorrow I am going to hop back into the Week 5 of Couch to 5K, this time with more of an incline, so I can get better simulate running outdoors. Even though I'm not fast, and I am still working on sustaining the distance, I am feeling so much stronger every week, like I'm able to run without feeling like I am falling to pieces.
I have been out of work since January, so it has been easy to find time to work out. I just received a job offer today, so the real test will be whether or not I can pull this off when I am working again. I don't have it in me to run first thing in the morning, but I am going to try.
-
Didn't even get out for a run today. But did create a plan for nov. Modified the Hal Higdon 18 week plan. Looks pretty manageable and I have three weeks before I start. Now need to pick out a couple of summer races to keep me motivated.
-
I haven't registered yet, but I plan on doing a half marathon on September 2, the Run the Reservoir Half in Westwood, NJ. That's 9 weeks before NYC, and perfect timing for a race of that length (according to my coach). I did this race last year, which was the first time it was held. After that, it'll probably just be some shorter races on Saturdays, and continue with my long runs on Sundays.
-
Didn't know it was national running day. I normally loaf for a week after a half marathon to reward myself but my stiffness is manageable after some great physio yesterday (oddly, stretching my DIEP ab scar and breaking up that scar tissue really relieved a lot). I'm in steamy Fort Lauderdale where I wanted to go to the mall to see what you can get that we can't get in Canada, so I set out on foot from my hotel near the airport, looking for a bus. Not at all a pedestrian friendly locale. I had to dodge 10 lanes of traffic and a train. But I walked 2.5 km (to and from the bus route), in addition to around the large mall, so I claim that as my national running day proceedings!
-
I am happy to report that the running is getting better. Its been about a month and a half since I finished chemo, and I was struggling to do a 13 minute mile at that point. Now I'm doing about 11 1/2 minute miles, so thats progress.
I have to say, although running was difficult during chemo and treatment, I feel that it made a huge difference. And I really havent had any problems with the Tamoxafen.
-
Just checking in this morning reading all of your running updates.
GOLDLINING--- the walking you did to the bus stop made me smile! That totally counts!!
I just realized as I was going to bed last night that it was National Running Day. I did run 3 miles yesterday morning. I am about to take my kids to the city park to run, and I plan to run 3 again.
Today marks 3 months since my BMX with TE. I feel great about how I have recovered in 3 months!! I am still concerned that my exchange surgery (whenever it will be) will interfere with my marathon training, but it is what it is!
I may have shared this before, but www.marathontraining.com has two great training programs. I am currently following the Mileage Buildup Plan. You do that one before you move into actual marathon training.
One more thing.....I found a plant based (not soy or dairy) protein powder that is great for making recovery smoothies. It's sold by www.livingfuel.com. It tastes great with almond milk, frozen strawberries, and a banana.
Some of you asked earlier about potty breaks and nutrition during a long run. I do take a potty break, sometimes more than one. All long races that I have done have porta potties on the race course. In any run longer than 8 miles I take either a GU or Clif gel packet with water or 100 calories worth of Gatorade every 5 miles or so.
Have a great day every one! -
I posted this on the Daily Exercise thread, so I am sorry to be redundant but I really feel all you runners who did your part on National Running Day NEED to KNOW that today is National Chocolate Ice Cream day (via Baskin Robbins Facebook page). And how appropriate! Although is does not taste quite as good for me as I am still in chemo....but I love my ice cream!
Now that I have my date for recon (July 27) I am having a blast researching training races between Oct and Dec! I will definately be doing a few Race for Cure 5k's in the southwest!
Keep on runnin'!
