A picture of me barrel racing - if it works

No big 'see the world' holiday plans; my pleasures are the ones I've always had - quilting, embroidery, reading, eating with friends, going to concerts, walking in peaceful places with our border terrier, and having visits from my daughters in England, with whom I am very close and we laugh a lot together. I am sad that I can't play badminton or tennis anymore but am very grateful that we live right on the River Rhine and I have a National Park three minutes' walk away and lovely riverside restaurants we can go to. I have a couple of friends who regularly pop in just for an hour's coffee/sandwich break between their free lance jobs and that has been a huge support when I was feeling ill because it was limited in time but I didn't have to make the effort and they always bring me interesting news. My international quilting group (usually between 4 and 10 people at each weekly meeting) continues to be noisy, inspiring and lots of fun - staunch friends made through our hobby - all our problems, both personal, family and health, all somehow get dealt with through our conversation which comes in a wild mixture of English, German and sometimes French...

What a great idea, Susan! Would love to have that kind of houseswap or rental, with the mango trees in particular. Please post pictures.
Chele, that looks dangerous! But also lots of fun!
As for fun, a long bike tour with my daughter in the coming weeks would be nice. I just am not into organizing things. My husband, on the other hand, has all his fun activities lined up until the end of summer. I'll have to do something about planning our family activities or we may not see him anymore.

Jumping in here without reading the whole thread - oh well - because we are headed out tomorrow on a cruise to Bermuda. First one for the both of us. After living on an island for 5 years or so and doing all that "time" on the ferry, I never thought we would go on a cruise. I do hate to play tourist, I suppose it's because they invade every year and it is so nice to see them leave.
So glad we got here with all systems go! Hoping for good weather but if the seas are rough, I will have an excuse for looking so clumsey (drunk) I know there will be a lot of shopping (ugh) to do and well, gotta go. Take care all. Whoo hoo.

I just returned from a trip to Nashville; my daughter graduated from college there last Saturday. It was so wonderful to get away from all my daily responsibilities. I even found a beautiful mastectomy swimsuit and some really cute head scarves. Now I'm looking forward to our beach trip this summer.
I'm getting inspired reading about all of your fun activities. I enjoy reading, watching classic movies, watching my son play sports, and hanging out with my sisters. I dream of taking a trip to England someday with my oldest daughter.
Chele, I can't believe you barrel race with bone mets. Good for you! I am afraid to even go on a trail ride because of all my spinal mets.
-
I think Susan should come to my house and cook for me
-
If I cook, you do the traveling!

Bon, "bling" is still all the rage, but luckily for me it's not required!
It IS a lot of fun heidihill!
Holdontohope, I've asked my oncologist several times, he says it's OK. I've got mets in most of my vertebre, my pelvis, and both femurs - so far nothing has fallen off. -
Hey Chele
That looks like fun/terrifying in equal measure!
Barbara - sounds really lovely where you are. I have a mountain of fabric in my sewing room and have always fancied quilting but am useless at following any kind of instruction. Guess I'd better start learning fast! -
Ok Susan. My DH is plannibg on flying again this summer and maybe we can fly up the coast to MA again (we did it in 2001) . If we do you're on!
-
We usually cruise the river near our neighborhood in our putt-putt boat, taking it for a joyride to a local honkey-tonk that has an outside band. This will be my first summer w/o hair. Boy, this'll be fun - worrying about my wig blowing off!

I'm getting ready to go to California to visit my daughter and grandaughter. Next weekend! Can't wait. They live near the ocean, we're going south to Coronado Beach. Should be so much fun.
I scheduled the trip about a month ago, didn't think about it much until today. Now, I am getting excited.
-
Have fun, Soleil! Get a wig yet?
Geez! All your lives seem so exciting! I did a lot of major cleaning today...just sat down for the first time all day! Boring!!! But so glad to get it done! -
Felt a need to post some happy things. I just released a dozen tadpoles into my frog pond. Someone gave me a pond shell and I built a little fence around it with landscape timber. its crude, but cute! So, today, I went to pick up the tadpoles from a hatchery near here and found out that an old friend had already paid for them. Made me cry! I can afford a dozen tadpoles, but the nice gesture touched my heart.
-
Aww...very nice...and i like hearing the word "tadpoles"! I was born in Illinois and thats what i grew up calling them but we moved to CT when i was eight and here they call them "polliwogs"! Never quite got used to that!
Very touching indeed! -
I love this thread-it is one of my favorites. I do not get to go out and do anything and love reading what everyone is doing. It inspires and gives me hope. Are people doing fun things for the Memorial day weekend?
Such a happy thread! -
It is a happy thread and I personally need it. I need to read about what others are doing. It gets me going. Some days, I just sit here blue and doomy. I'm working on fixing that. I read the thread Chele wrote about riding barrel horses and it made me decide to do more. I decided to try hard to not be a big baby and keep going. I read the thread Susan wrote and I'm still a little jealous but it made think about taking another trip. I know there are huge variances in our health and how we feel. I, for example, could not ride in a barrel horse competition, I could not ride a horse period. I can try to do what I can do and do it as much as possible and that is what I keep having to remind myself about. So, I do love this thread. I hope lots of people are having awsome weekends!

Hey Soleil
Well after my crappy brain news this week, I'm starting to feel a bit better emotionally although the dreaded stroids and Xeloda are starting to kick in.
After a bit or nudging with my insurers, we should be getting a cheque in the next few days to pay off the mortgage and the credit cards so big cancer silver-lining there!
Planning to fit a new wood burning stove in the next few weeks (we have an old 1800's cottage) then we can decorate the lounge and get rid of all the blackness on the ceiling from burning coal through the winter. I have a plasterer coming to quote me to sort out my daughters room so we can decorate there and also to fix the roof in the lounge where the dog fell through (don't ask!)
My husband called this morning from work to ask what did I think about getting one of those mini-Eriba caravans so we can tour around Europe a bit in the summer if I'm up to it, so that's a bit exciting. We usually camp and have a huge tent but it can be such a fag to put up. With the caravan we could just go with that and a pop up tent for the kids.
Funny story from last night. My daughter Marsaili who is 12 has really long hair. She called me from her mobile and said, "Um. mum, can you come upstairs, I'm a bit stuck" At first I thought it was her dodgy door which jams sometimes and needs a bit of a push (another to add to the list of jobs). But no, the door was open but she was sitting upright with her head at a funny angle pressed against the back of her day-bed. "Um, I've tied my hair to the bed and now I'm stuck" It was so funny and I couldn't do anything for laughing.
Loving my kids!
Coming up on my 1 year anniversary so thought I'd change my avatar to how I looked this time last year - wow - what a difference a year makes...
-
Laurie, your daughter's hair story has me in giggles this morning! That is definitely something my daughter would do too.
I am loving reading about all of the good times here.
Last night I booked flights for my kids and I to visit my fiance for 4 weeks this summer in California. We'll leave right after I get my Zoladex and pamidronate injections in June. I'm a bit scared. I'm feeling okay now but thinking things could go wrong at any time. I need to somehow shake that off and hope for the best.
I'm not sure what we'll do there... it won't be like last year when we hiked Yosemite for 3 days. Sheesh, a 3-minute hike these days has my hips aching. I just hope I'm able to make it a nice time for the kiddos and enjoy some time with my man.
-
Enjoy the change in scenery, climate, and just relax........ !! Ahhhh......

Well, a couple of weeks ago I met up wit jac53 in NYC and we had a great time. Looks like I'm gonna do it again to meet another lady I know virtually through BCO in a couple of weeks. Can't wait.
Last week we took the babies (my nephew and grand nephew) to Knoebels (an amusement park in the Poconos) for the day - gotta have the token kids lol. Had a blast - they had so much fun.
Celebrating 28 years with my wonderful DH Saturday (probably just dinner and a movie).
Next week going to the 92.5 Anniversary show (local country music station) on Saturday then my first Dragon Boat festival on Sunday - Paddle for Pink(in Mercer NJ). Not ready to participate as part of the team yet (still need to build my stamina) but gonna cheer them on and take lots of pics (my big hobby).
My DH has lots of plans for us this summer - keep updating as I do them! -
Have a great time, kebab!
Laurie, the caravan idea sounds fantastic. And popping up a tent for the kids even better. Way to get some privacy! Now you've given me something to think about.
-
I got to throw out the 1st pitch at the Mariners' game on Monday night!
I wish I could figure out how to post a photo, but here's a link to my blog if you want to see.
-
Hey Nancy - Great blog and you look teriffic (as do Jake and the dogs!) So are you super little and he's super tall? LOL!
Lx
-
That was great, Nancy. I would have been so nervous! Laurie is right, you look great and hubby is very tall! lol
-
Just checked out your blog too, Nancy. Great photos.... all of them. And yes you do look super! Thanks for sharing!
-
Great pics, Nancy! Baseball uniforms suit you!
-
Whenever I can escape we head to Cromer in Norfolk. Sea air always has me snoozing but it is so nice to have a change of scenery. We got there a week ago for a few days and hope to escape at the end of June

Remodeling two bathrooms I've hated since we bought this house 15 years ago. In fact, it wasn't until the other day that I actually looked at two sconces in our master bath. They are DEFINITELY the ugliest ever made. It's fun shopping for new stuff, altho I have to say these occasional manic phases I get in after brain radiation sometimes drive me a little crazy when I'm trying to pick stuff out and try to remember what I picked at which store/web site and why.... who knows what we'll really end up with. Luckily, my husband has great taste, has designed both bathrooms basically and can put up with my steroid rages/confusion.
-
I had the most beautiful day with my family yesterday, tried to insert the picture of my frog pond, but I am not having much luck. Anyone know how to insert and image here?
Hope you are all enjoying the holiday!
