port tip culture

yesterday the surgeon took out port from my wifes chest and then they sent the tip of port for CULTURE AND SENSETITIVTY TEST

ANYONE KNOW WHAT THIS TEST IS FOR?

    Culture is seeing if it would grow bacteria indicating an infection. Sensitivity is seeing which antibiotics the bacteria are sensitive to.

    This used to be done routinely when any central line (a catheter inserted so that the tip is in a  main vein) was removed.  It's more often done now if there's evidence of infection. 

    If your wife wasn't showing signs of infection, I wouldn't worry about this at all.
