Occasional inverted nipple - worried!
Hi thereOver the past few weeks I"ve noticed that my nipple is very occasionally inverted - with manipulation though it easily pops out. Have googled and alarmingly found that one of reasons this is happening may be breast cancer...I'm now very concerned. When I was 18 I had a fibroadenoma removed and when I was 41 found a lump that was thankfully found (via ultra-sound) to be a cyst - which was then drained (they also told me I had other non palpable cysts in the same breast). This was approx. 12 months ago. Recently my left breast has become aching at times, sometimes with pain emitting up into my armpit and down my arm. I went to my doctor who examined me and said that she wasn't worried at all and that it felt like I had another cyst that was filling up during my menstrual cycle (this was the same dr who immediately referred me last year with the lump). Now, though with the discovery of the nipple retraction I am very worried that it may be breast cancer...has anybody else had these symptoms? I can not feel any lumpiness around the nipple area and there is no discharge either. Any help would be greatly received - I have an appointment Thursday morning with my dr but the wait will be agony.
Thanks very much for any feedback - it's all so daunting and exhausting.

Just got back from the dr's who has referred me to the breast clinic - appointment is next Wednesday. She says my breast has changed since the last time she examined it and also there is a slight nipple change - I asked if it was something to be worried about and she says that it feels like I have cysts along my left side of my left breast. She also said that the change in my nipple may be related to the pressure of the cysts on surrounding tissue - even though she said that there are no alarm bells in her head, I am so worried now... petrified that I again have to go to the breast clinic, I nearly fainted the last time, feel very overcome with worry. Any words of advise would be appreciated....thanks so much.

I have a similar situation going on. My issue started started over the course of 2011, around 7 months after I had my son. I started noticing that my breasts were aching or in pain, little pinches that never happened before...and then in December the pinches became dull aches, of which are predominantly in my left breast, as well as burning in my left arm pit. This pain would also run down my arm at times. I noticed that the pain was mostly during ovulation or during my period...nipple and areola would burn...sometimes it would feel like there were shards of glass in certain parts of my left breast.
I went to then two OBs, one of which I went to twice, breast exam were done and in addition an ultrasound. Each time nothing was found and a hormonal imbalance was diagnosed...despite the herbal remedy I was given, the pain persisited. The months went on, some worse than others, still all symptoms happening mid to end of my cycle..About a month or two ago I started noticing aching in my groin as well as there being a dip above my nipple in my left breast, which is only there when my nipple is not errect..now May, I have dull aching in my thighs. And basically at the end of my rope.
Yesterday I got a third opinion from another OB. She did a breast exam and found a hard rubbery mass about 1cm in size next to my nipple in my left breast....she unfortunately could not find it on the Ultrasound. This puzzeled me greatly and made me very scared...how could something so big not be seen via the ultrasound. She told me that it could mean a lot of things, calcification Fibroadnoma, but we want to be careful and have a mammagram done to rule all possibilities out. I am also completely terrified and do not know what to make of all this. In the meantime all possible case scenarios are going through my head. I have heard that one of the symptoms of breast cancer is not pain, but I am still concerned that this could be the case. I could also use some feed back and support. I am only 30 years old with two children under the age of 7.

Hi there,
It's good you have an appointment with the breast clinic soon - the waiting is the hardest part. I think sometimes the body does strange things (i.e. nipple changes, hormones etc) and it could be related to the cysts like she said. But bottom line, you are doing the right thing by getting it checked out. If it does turn out to be something serious, you will catch it, make a plan, and take care of it. At least, this is what I keep telling myself as I go through the same scary waiting period. We are taking care of ourselves, that is what counts, and know you are not alone. Everyone is here for you! Good luck and keep us posted.
-
Although it sometimes is scary to read the posts in this forum, they give us like you said the feeling that we are not alone! I am thankful for that!
-
Thanks to CatMac81 and Tealorca11 to respond to my post. Waiting is the worst part - it allows your imagination to go to dreadful places....hard to keep sane and rational at this point. CatMac81 I noticed my pain was more severe around ovulation and around period too - similar to you the pain ran up into my armpit and down the arm. It's a terrifying time so I know exactly how you are feeling - your mind can run and run and get out of control. My friends have advised me not to google anymore as imagined scenarios are petrifying. It's good that you are going for a mammogram too - do you know when your appointment is? My apt is next Wednesday, the breast clinic is a one stop shop (I am in the UK) so I'll get a mammogram/US and biopsy (if required) all on same day...I should get a good idea of what's going on by the end of Wednesday. I just hope it's good news...
The board here is so informative and so warm too - there are some lovely ladies out there, it's reassuring to know that you all look out for each other and care what happens next.
-
My mammo will be on Wednesday. I am living in Germany, so I am not sure if the center I am going to will also be a one stop shop. Now that I know that other places offer this, I hope that I will also have the same opportunities. What does your doctor think about the series of events with you regarding the aching in the breast and pain in the armpit in conjunction with the nipple? Did she share any of her thoughts with you on this?
-
Oh the same day as mine, I hope you can get all the tests done in one go. She thinks the aching is connected to fluid/cysts in my breast that are then exacerbated by my hormones (as the aching is not constant throughout the month). The nipple issue she said maybe connected to hormones and also the cysts - pressing down on tissue in the breast - she didn't seem to be overly concerned as they were evert when I went for my examination (they have only been slightly inverted for 3-4 times over the past 2 weeks). She was reassuring but did say that further investigations were needed....hence Wednesday's appointment looms....
-
I wish we had a one stop shop here where I live. It was 2 weeks waiting for u/s and mammo, another week waiting to see surgeon, then another 2 weeks waiting for biopsy( which will be monday). Then have to wait for results( which is what I think is going to be the hardest) Cat and Viola, good thoughts and prayers for u both.
-
Yes, we're very lucky here, they also have a 2 week policy that you must be seen by a breast clinic within 2 weeks of seeing your gp - it's all free too. The waiting is awful so I can imagine that it's been difficult for you in between appointments - good luck on Monday - I will keep an eye open for your news, I hope it will be good.
-
Thank you Viola444, the waiting is definitely the hardest part....and for the most part the unknown. My family and I made a major change about a year ago, in hopes to have a better life....an entire household sold, given away or packed, moved two children, one of which was only four months old at the time, including ourselves to another country....after a year of being here it seems like we are all finally on our way to having a normal life and then to have in the back of your mind the whole time, you could be facing an illness is very difficult. I think what is also difficult is really, the psychological pain we go through experiencing what we experience and then seeing what we as non medical people do not understand....very hard to wait and leave your health in the hands of a doctor....is just inexplainably difficult....Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers for our future appointments.
-
Oh my, such a change to your life! What an adventure for you and your family. I can imagine it must be incredibly frustrating that as soon as you feel settled in Germany something like this happens. Yes, I know about putting your health in someone else's hands, I've dissected and analysed every part of my dr's conversation with me, feeling hopeful then feeling completely doomed, such extreme emotions. I did go out today and bought some flower remedies for worry and anxiety, have been taking them and do feel a little calmer this afternoon. I so hope that your news will be good on Wednesday, what time is your apt? Mine is at 2.50.
-
Yes, you could not have explained it better....and I also have these feelings of hope and then feeling completely doomed and my symptoms constantly happening through out the day just make me feel worse or bring up my feelings of doubt all over again. My appointment is at 10:40am...so that would be 9:40 your time.
I meant to ask you, if you press on the interior of your arm pit on the side with the breast where the nipple is slightly inverted, does your armpit start to ache and burn? Are you also having any burning other places, groin or behind your knees? Since last week I have had occasional dull aching in my groin and also on the interior upper part of my thigh...it is driving me crazy, because I am then wondering, ok,.....is that what I think I have, now already advanced...total mental torture.
-
I have a few questions for you I hope you don't mind me asking. Did you notice your nipple going slightly before it went in and had to be coaxed? What kind of pain or fullness did you have? Have you had some blood tests done?
-
Hi there catmac and wilson...in answer to catmac's questions, no I don't feel any pain anywhere else. I can hear how nervous you are so I'm sure at the moment you're feeling hypersensitive to any ache or pain that you wouldn't have given a second thought to before the issue with your breast. Regarding the aching around the armpit, it comes and goes, today it's started to ache quite a lot but I'm guessing that this might be because I am now mid-cycle. If I touch my armpit it does feel a little sore, but this soreness is also further down into the side of my back - to the side of my shoulder blade - it feels like the muscles are tense in this region. I'm glad to hear that your appointment is in the morning - that way you can get up and go straight there, much better than hanging on till the afternoon (I shall go slightly mad!) Wilson, regarding the nipple, it has been semi - inverted a few times, I pressed on either side and it popped out easily. Not seen any inversion since Tuesday though....The pain I'd describe more as an ache which comes and goes and varies in intensity. The ache has been there for a few months (actually if I think about it sporadic aches started last summer but worsened March this year - I didn't pay any heed to them last yr as it was just after I'd had the all clear on the ultrasound/mammogram) and the pattern seems to be around and after period and mid-cycle too. Not had blood tests as my dr seemed to think the ache was to do with fluid in my breasts and hormones. Hope that helps!
-
Thanks for your reply, all information helps but we are all individuals if 10 people had flu 10 people would probably have similar symptoms but describe them different if that makes any sense? I feel like I am doing a big jigsaw puzzle and have 2 peices left which will be my dermatology appointment on wed and then one more thing then result so looking positive all round. I hope you are having a great weekend
and thank you for your response
-
I am also having this soreness down the affected side and into my back, shoulder blade as well. Do you notice that one rib cage is larger than the other? I noticed in February, that my left rib cage, the side where all the symptoms are in my breast, that my left ribcage is larger than the right. Do you do any forms of heavy lifting? I was told by my pcp that the symptoms with my breasts and side were probably the result of lifting my son, as was the large sized rib cage...oh yeah and that the pain my breast must be hormonal as it was mid cycle and around the time of my period.
I also had occassional twinges in my breasts about 6 months after having my son. I also did not pay much attention until they became more frequent and then became full blown mid monthly that following December...so strange that we have the same symptoms.
I had blood work down in response to my larger rib cage...they said that they did not find anything abnormal, ie growth of anything, blood being affected, tumors etc....mentioned though that they thought my thyroid numbers were slightly elevated. No sound for alarm, but they want me to touch base with them if I have unexpected weight gain or feeling tired....
Do people say you look pale or ask you if you have lost weight? That seems to be the on going comment with me the last few months...although I have not lost any weight according to the scale, this question comes quite often and it is driving me mad, because it just makes me feel like, that is just another symptom of something I hope is not what I think it could be.
I am also glad that my appointment is early in the morning, but still the waiting until then is so difficult. Today I had a very hard day....just thinking and thinking....needless to say, there were a lot of tears.
-
Good for all of you for getting to a doctor to get things checked out. I too noticed "changes" , an inverted nipple at times, and a slight dimpling, and I pointed it out to my doctor, and no doubt saved my own life.
It is scary, the waiting time is scary...but being proactive is such a positive thing to do for yourselves, taking charge. While waiting, stay busy, keep your mind from wandering, don't google things until you have facts!!
let us know how you are doing...
-
Oh dear Catmac, sorry to hear that you had a bad day - yesterday I felt ok, this morning a little low but am trying to keep myself busy and distract my thoughts, we are in limbo at the moment so even though it would be easy to curl up into a ball till Wednesday, I know that I'll feel better by carrying on (even managed to do my accounts yesterday!). I agree with Crystalphm, the waiting is scary, it's the fear of the unknown, I know it's difficult but try and keep yourself busy. In answer to your questions, I don't do any heavy lifting and my ribs feel the same size, I don't look like I've lost weight (and my clothes fit ok) and I haven't noticed that I'm any paler than normal. Hope today has been easier for you.
-
I had a very rough day today Viola...it just seems that all this sensation and the unknown just really finally got to me...but I thank you for putting things into perspective for me and for giving me your view on having to wait. I am glad that I found your thread and that we can support each other through this....two more days!
-
Yes, only 2 more days and then the waiting will be over!! Just try cramming lots of things in and the time will hopefully fly by - the weekend seemed to go in a flash for me but I did so much, it's getting up in the mornings that I find the most difficult. I'm pleased too that I've found someone who is experiencing similar issues and feelings, bit random too that we have our appointments the same day... Anyhow, keep me posted with how you're feeling....
-
I also think that it is quite random that you and I have an appointment on the same day. Very strange...hopefully it will be nothing more than a coincidence....
This morning I felt ok....went for a walk with my son and then took him to the park...
I just have a lot of annoying aches and pains still and I would like to go to my PCP, but am having difficulty with the fact that I am always just sent away.....makes me more and more paranoid....
-
Just hang on in there till Wednesday, only one more full day to go! Good to hear that you were out and about this morning too - being active does make it easier, try and plan something for tomorrow too...I've got Tuesday evening planned already!
-
Hi Viola...wow you are amazingly strong to make sure you have such a plan of attack for the waiting and the worry. Today I will be very busy with my children, since my daughter will be home from kindergarten and my son is under 2 years old so he is with me anyway. How are you feeling?
-
Oh I have moments of feeling scared and then moments of feeling strong...got butterflies in my stomach at the moment but generally have found mornings to be the most difficult...just need to get on with my day and get busy with my work schedule! Glad to hear that you will be busy with your children today, try to focus on them and having fun, busy days are the key to getting through waiting...
-
hi viola4444 & catmac 81. I too have an appointment on wed (tomorrow) I can't wait it will be one more peice of the jigsaw sorted and a step closer to a diagnosis of whatever. The wait that will kill me and make me weak will be the wait for test results, that is when i think I will get a jigsaw out and do it. I hope you both have a great day
-
oh I'll keep an eye out for your update tomorrow wilson, hope it goes ok at the hospital! Have a good day yourself...
-
I hope you had a good day today Viola...sending you good vibes for your appointment tomorrow. Thank you for sharing some of your strength with me.
-
and to you too Wilson33....sorry, I forgot to include you!!!!!
-
Good luck gals thoughts and prayers with you (((hugs)))
-
Lots of you ladies with appointments tomorrow.
Here's to you all, and good luck in these difficult times.
