What are you doing for fun??

That is beautiful Kathy.

I just got internet today so that's why I have not been on the boards. I just did the craziest thing and having a blast. Our house was so small and my kid's getting so big that we moved out! I left hubby and oldest son (22) at the homefront and rented a house in town. We live in a rural area and I was getting sick of the drive everyday to their school, sports, shopping etc. It is the ugliest rental ever but alot bigger than our home. The kid's and I are having fun going to garage sales and getting things for the house. (not buying anything new
). We have lots of plans for the summer, mostly spending time on the water. Michigan has alot of beautiful inland lakes and I will be inviting myself over to the friends who have cottages! Coolbreeze I thought the same when I had to leave my job but really it has turned out to be the greatest thing. I'm doing stuff I probably would never consider before bc. I am being a bad girl and having the time of my life. I also purchased a Kindle fire and love it. I'm probably spending more than I should with it though. I started bike riding with my kid's this week and seems to have given me more energy. I'm still a little afraid of falling though. I used to do stained glass but that's a big no no now. I guess I should think about buying some annuals as there is only one tulip (not kidding) at this house!

I have two very close friends and we are all retired now. We worked together as probation officers for all our careers. We get together for drinks amd snacks at least one day every week. We joke that it is our therapy but in fact it is therapeutic. We laugh, cry, commiserate etc and try to support each other as best we can. So thats one fun thing I do regularly. I always enjoy their company.
My husband will retire in July and we are hoping my health holds out so we can enjoy some nice trips together. So that is something I look forward to greatly. My son lives in Seattle, Wa. and we are plannimg to get up there soon just for a weekend to spend some time with him. Thats the special fun things I have going on, and I am very grateful for them.

Beautiful picture K-lo. Feeling pretty down and zapped of energy...probably a bad place to come in times like that but I was looking for an inspiring pick- me-up...I think that was it!
Glad you're back on Bobcat. Your new beginning sounds exciting and lots of fun! -
Going to see best musical nominee tomorrow..Leap of Faith. DD got $5 tickets at student rush.com! Cheaper than going to the movies. Broadway here I come!
-
I and those around me seem to do best when I keep life as normal as possible. Everything we did before, we still do now. See friends, walk our dog, swim, scrapbook, movies. I may not have the energy to do things as often, but I am still doing them, and that's what counts!
-
Today I am going to ride the tractor down to the creek and play in the mud.
-
I had a blast yesterday in NY meeting Jeannie (jac53) and her daughter. My BFF, sister, DD and I drove to Newark and took the train in to meet them. We had a nice visit in Central Park then went to Ellen's Stardust for dinner. GREAT company and great entertainment (all the waiters and waitresses are aspiring Broadway entertainers and take turns singing for your supper).
I still work full time but my DH and I try to do something every Saturday even if we just go for a drive ( he has a jeep so we go off road a lot in good weather).
Next Saturday we're taking the babies (my 20 month nephew and 10 month great nephew - yes my nephew is 10 months older than his nephew lol) to Knoebels (an amusement park in the Poconos).
In June we're going to the WXTU anniversary show (a free concert put on by the local country radio station). It's an all day concert with lots of big name performers (this year's headliner is Miranda Lambert).
Haven't made other definite summer plans but my DH says we need to do as much as we can together while I can and LIVE as much as possible while not really denying my realty but remembering we don't know anything for sure so can't live waiting for the next shoe to drop. -
Ma111 I am officially jealous of you.
And Jill Thut too for going dancing. I want to go dancing but my new hairdo aka none is not ready for public.
This post brings me great joy! Can we post more than once. I want to post again .
I can't stop buying flowers and planting them . I'm trying to stop but I can't . i love it. I put the music on loud( Keith Urban of course), put my overalls on and get lost in my yard.
-
Of course we can post more then once! I think a scarf would be just fine for dancing!
-
This thread is like candy... can't get enough!!! Thank you, Sandilee. My fun this summer will be SWIMMING! We are lucky to have a pool but heating it is sooo darn expensive. But this year I'm doing it! I got a small cancer discount (rehab for my back) from the gas/electric people, which will help with the cost. I bought a fun, retro two piece swim suit (retro meaning it's high waisted enough to cover my scars and my sins)... and I'm ready for action. And I'm tanning this year too! So sick of being so careful all the time. It's Margaritas and a sunburn!
Please keep posting... absolutely love reading about all of your plans...
Rose.

To tell you the truth I had a lot more dance partners when i wore a wig! The wig was much straighter than my natural wiry hair and i think it made me look younger. I had a relationship for a while. We met when i was hairless. It ended kind of recently and i joke to myself that i was false advertising with the wig. Once the hair grew back he ran for the hills!!!

My mother was born and raised in Liverpool, UK and she wants to take a mother daughter trip this fall.
-
Kathy, I love the pics. Very pretty.
Sandilee, thanks for the thread. Yesterday I had a much needed reprieve from all the crappy doo doo stuff that has been happening the last few months. My son graduated from Michigan State with high honors in genetics. We met his girlfriend's family, (she graduated too) had dinner, went to a coffee shop later and had coffee. We had so much fun, laughing and talking. It was like we were old friends. We left for the 2 hour drive home just under 11pm and I felt "normal" despite my SE's. Thanks everyone for the push out the door. Sending everyone a big MICHIGAN hug! Dawn

I love gardening and barrel racing. I've been an organic gardener for 30 years. I've ridden all of my life. I'd been attending my nieces barrel races, and planned to last year also. When I got my diagnosis last year I figured now or never so instead of watching her I compete against my niece. She beats me every time but I'm having a blast. We had a three day race this weekend. My horse and I bettered our time each day. I'm so proud of him.
-
What is barrel racing?
Yesterday my son needed his glasses repaired, so I took him to the mall. We got them fixed and then had lunch. It was so nice to sit with him and talk. When I quit work this summer, I am going to take him out at least weekly, maybe more. Even if I live a few more years, he'll be off to college in 2.
-
chele, I'm in awe of all you are able to do with your bone mets.
And Dawn, Congratulations to your son- way to go, mom! You raised a good one!
Coolbreeze, these special times with our kids, one on one, are the best.
The last two high school years fly by, so--glad you're making the most of it.
I'm vicariously enjoying all the wonderful things everyone is doing! This crowd is definitely not letting the cancer get in the way of living our lives, as well as we are able.
Keep on posting, yes, and often!
-
I love this post. YOu are all pretty amazing. Reese's last paragraph is so true.
I am reading these posts and thinking I need to do more. So, today, I'm going to plan to do something social. I've been hiding from social. Going to find a meetup walk that I can attend and force myself out out out.... Thank you all for sharing.
-
Soleil definitely dont hide from social. I find even when i don't feel too well if i get out and do something physical i feel better...and mostly it puts me back into the normal living world which is where I think most of us want to be! A couple weeks back when I had both a bad stomach ache and headache (navelbine induced I think) I forced myself to go to a biking MEETUP i had planned. It was an hour and ten minute drive and I didn't feel well all the way there and thought it was a mistake, but when I got there and got on the bike and started moving the headache lifted. Biked 12 miles....all flat...i love biking but do it for fun...not exercise!
-
Attending my daughters high school tennis matches. I enjoy tennis so much and that was my dream to play when I retired on the over 50/60 age groups in doubles. Now I will settle for watching my daughter and live through her. I am going to be very sad when the season is over.
-
Hi, I've loved reading these posts....and feel somewhat ashamed because I can't seem to get the energy to do much of anything but take small walks and household chores. Are you all on treatment, or in remission? I just started this journey, and I'm on 2 chemos right now and hope and pray to get to remisssion. I want to have fun again....you're giving me hope.

CoolBreeze
Like you,I am an avid reader. I usually only read mysteries.
Have you thought about going to the library? You may have to put the most popular books on hold and wait for them. They have Kindle books.
At one time,I bought books, but started to get them at the library a few years ago. I love the feel of books in my hands;will never get a Kindle,Nook, etc.
I also DVR TV shows,so I can zoom through commercials. Those are my "fun" things.
-
My idea of fun is like so much of my life, different.
I cook. I cook a lot. I study cuisines. I search ethnic markets searching for unknown ingredients so that I can learn how to use them. I create theme nights and make far too much food. I read cookbooks and cook alongside others from specific books for a month. I love having big groups of friends over for big meals. There is nothing like having 10 people laughing around my table, all enjoying a good meal with an excellent wine.
Another passion is travel. And when I do, I rent or houseswap so that I have a kitchen so I can, you guessed it, cook with local ingredients. Though there hasn't been much money for travel lately, we are headed to Puerto Rico this weekend for a two week house swap. The house has three banana trees with almost ripe fruit and 12 mango trees! Can you imagine waking up in the morning and going to pick breakfast?
I find great joy in pushing a tiny seed into the ground and watching it turn into a tomato, or a lettuce head. I only grow things you can eat with some success considering we live in the middle of a city.
And finally, watching my daughter flourish and turn into a woman with morals, compassion, smarts, and a good life plan.

Frecklestoo,
Hopefully you will start having better days and get to enjoy life more.
I imagine the majority of us...at least the stage four people, are in active treatment of some sort. I believe "remission" is a term that means being cancer free for five years or more...at least that's how an oncologist explained it to me. It seems to be a term not often used anymore.
In any case, if this is new to you, treatment I mean, chances are eventually your body may become more adjusted to it. I often have healthy people marvel at how much energy I have. I have been doing chemotherapy for two and a half years and was very sick in the beginning but not so much anymore. I have fared somewhat poorly when starting a new chemo....but my body seems to adjust to it eventually.
-
Thank you JillThut for the encouragement. I was on chemo 2 years ago for this triple negative breast cancer, dose dense, 3 kinds of chemo, and it was very hard. This time I'm on xeloda, a chemo pill, and taxetere every 3 weeks for my lung mets. I hope I can start getting back my energy soon. I've been on this regimine for a month now. All of you ladies are awesome. You give me such hope of getting back to life so my husband and I can enjoy our retirement years as we planned.
-
Frecklestoo,
Taxotere sucks aka Taxoterrible. It took all my energy and did a lot of damage to my body. On weeks 2 and 3 try to do something, however week 1 will be very hard.
Welcome to the forum and sorry you have to be here.
-
Okay, Susan...that sounds amazing! Make sure you send us some pictures of Puerto Rico, recipes would be good too.
I find that I have to force myself to start doing things....force myself out for a walk, then once I get walking, I'm good. Jill said something like this about her dancing. Its not always easy to leave the couch, but I'm pushing the get out button as much as I can. I believe the more I do, the more I can do.
-
Soliel - you are so right! Sometimes I just have to force myself off the couch and make myself head out the door. Navelbine and Aromisin don't help much in the energy dept. It's even harder living alone as there's no one to give me kick in the butt to get out there! But. . . once out there and doing it, usually feel so much better.
-
Frecklestoo,
I just came off of xeloda after a year of being on it..hated it in the beginning because of the diarrhea and nausea but switched the schedule to a week on and a week off and lived very well on it after that. Ofcourse our bodies are all different.
Today I feel like I need to re-read my own comments about having all that energy..did I say that? Because today I'm zonked! Planned to go job hunting but got called for a sub job and did that..by the end of the four hour day my energy was drained! But I'm sure tomorrow will be different...and I intend to enjoy it!
-
I am on the 14 day schedule with the xeloda. Today is day 13, and I'm looking forward to next week being off of it and hoping to feel good. I have all kinds of plans in the garden. That is one of my hobbies, and so far this year, I haven't been at it much. I look forward to getting back into it. My doctor told me that even when I'm tired it's not a bad idea to push myself out the door on a little walk and usually it will make me feel better, and if I get tired from it, I can rest after, but each day I should push. I think pushing myself to the garden will be my goal.
