Can't comment on bras as my bust size has never really warranted needing an exceptional one ;)

I CAN tell you that I am a huge Couch to 5K fan!  So much so that I used it to start back up into running after my treatment finished. The C25K group I've been "leading" is on week 7 and we've seen a lot of success stories.  For me, it helped spark my enthusiasm for the sport all over again.  I can't say enough about the program... happy to answer questions, etc. if I can.

Nice to have you both aboard!

One place for good sports bras - when I had my pre-dx DD "girls" I got bras from Title Nine:  www.titlenine.com/  They rate their sports bras by "barbells" - the more barbells, the better the support.  I used to get a 5 barbell bra and it really held, even with vigorous exercise.  (I opted to recon to down Bs after my BMX - love my perky little "girls" now as any off-the-shelf sports bra works beautifully.)

eulabt - if you can already run a half and it's only May -- you will be in great shape to run by Nov in NY -- keep us posted how your training is going. How did Flower City go? Was it really cold?

    cheers - judy

paradiju- The half went well. I took the time to enjoy it and didn't worry about my time(1:47:59). It was cold, but the sun was out and it made a world of differenece. I am a little bit nervous about running more than the 13, but I am up for the challenge:)

eulabt -- i can only imagine that you have been a serious runner for a long time and that you are young(ish) because that is a fantastic time -- cancer or not! Congrats! Sounds like you could cruise and do a marathon in under 4 hours -- my elusive goal LOL

    You keep me motivated.

paradiju- I have been running for 6 years but didn't get serious until last year after I was diagnosed. I am 42 and decided it was now or never! Thanks for the encouragement:)

I haven't been on the boards in a while... Thankfully, I am feeling great, and have not had much time to be online! I ran/walked a 5K with some college friends last Saturday. It was an annual race in memory of my college roommate who died at age 37 from ovarian cancer. I did this race in 35:25, my second slowest 5K ever! But I am 7 weeks post BMX, so I am just grateful that I can run. I am running a 10K this Saturday with my 8 yo daughter (her first). My entire family, except for my 6 yo is running this race. I know it will be my slowest 10K ever, but again, I am just thankful I can do it!

I had my second and maybe final TE fill last Thursday. I am anxious to get the exchange surgery behind me so I can begin my marathon training.

    Have a great day everyone!

Seeing all of you with scheduled races has made me think that I too need a goal.  Unfortunately, I still am too tight in the abs to "run."  I had hoped to start tr.aining again next week by doing the summer program I've done for the past 11 years, but alas, I think by the time I get to the workout location, I'll have to head back.  Perhaps I'll be able to start in the middle of the program (or in a week or two when I'm 8 weeks out).  I had a terrible week last week (even though I walked over 20 miles), but this week has been much better.

Ok.  I haven't registered yet, but I'm planning on doing the Ten for Texas on October 13 in The Woodlands (it shares part of the same run course as Ironman Texas).  I've done it for the past 4 or 5 years.  I just hope it won't be hot & humid!

eulabat -- you must be a natural and/or you work really hard. I started running in my 30's -- i am 61 but never seriously -- i run 8 to 10 km almost ever day but i have never been a speed demon -- my best marathon was 4:15 -- i was really working towards 4 when my knee gave out and i was diagnosed -- being on this thread is really encouraging me to go for it.

iswimibikeirun -- sorry you had a lousy week! But look at the bright side -- things can only get better and you still walked 20km!! Most "healthy" people don't do that in a month!! Good on you.

Oh groovygirls, a zombie run! They are bringing one to my city soon, but it is not really in the city. The actual location is like 90 minutes out of town. I think I will enjoy the idea of it in my imagination and skip the actual muddy-footed experience. But do tell us all about it!!!

Hi!  My name is Kitten. I am 51 yo RN.  I have just started doing duathlons this year.  Previously I walked and ran but not together.  I am going to be starting chemo/rads very soon, probably next week.  Just had Bilateral Mastectomies last week and I am getting stir crazy right about now!!  I am used to being very active and am not a happy camper being in the house for long periods of time.  How soon did you guys start running after surgery?  I still have 4 drains right now(another pain in my arse). Hopefully will get the drains out next Tuesday.  My next goal is to run some 10K and do some time trials on my bike.  I would like to start half-marathons as well.  I can't wait to get active again.

Hi Kitten. I had three surgeries, no RADS or chemo, and I was back to running within a week of all three of my procedures. But the running was very easy and low efforted. No races, no speedwork or hills, didn't even want to run with other people for a long time for fear that they would make me work harder than I felt my body was ready for. Intensity of the activity is the determining factor, rather than activity itself, I believe, in coming back strong after major surgery.

The others here on this thread will be able to offer their thoughts on resuming running with other treatments. Best of luck to you!

Roan - I'd be thrilled to finish a 5K in 35:25 - that'd be about 2 minutes faster than my fastest ever 5K!  Wink

Hi Kitten - I was walking on the treadmill a week at 4mph for an hour or more at a time after I got out of the hospital post DIEP, which is the most invasive procedure I've had. (No rads or chemo.) The surgery takes a lot of abdominal tissue out to construct the frankenboobs so I could not straighten up for 6 weeks, but did a 5K and a half marathon at 6 weeks. Poor time (35 min and 3:10 I think) but I dare anyone to criticize my time! Getting back to the treadmill I think was a big benefit for recovery as it was good for my mood as well as physically good. During the recovery, the important thing in my opinion is to be kind and take whatever you can do at face value and don't judge. It is inherently "good enough".

goldlining, I did a lot of walking after my UMX also, and I agree, the consistent but non-strenuous effort of brisk walking made a huge difference in my recovery. Even though we are runners, we should never underestimate the power of walking!

NatsFan, don't stress over speed, you'll get there... in fact, you ARE getting there, one step at a time! I'm not particularly fast either, but I work hard and I try to work smart, and that's all that matters. "Good enough" indeed!

So, just finished week 2 of couch to 5k. Awesome. I really didn't think I'd be able to do it at all. Of course I have a long way to go but I'm determined! I am having some shin issues that I'm hoping will some better stretching will get better. Any suggestions much appreciated.

I have to day I'm in awe of all of you. You are my inspiration. Happy trails.

Hi chrissilini, do you have proper running shoes that are in decent shape?  That can make a difference...

In any case, GOOD JOB on your progress!  You will continue to amaze yourself, believe me...

I did the equivalent of 10K tonight... some of it was walking but about 5.5 miles was running.  I'm very hopeful this means I'm on-track to run the whole thing on 6/9.

Kitten, My surgeon wanted me to hold off on running until my drains were out.  And then it was more of a jog than running.  While waiting to run, I did go to the gym and do the recumbent bike.  That seemed to work fine.

I just signed up for a 5K that is running in conjunction with the Toronto Marathon tomorrow. The 5K benefits the cancer hospital where I'm taking my LE so I don't mind the spendy onsite registration. I am not ready for the half distance yet, but a 5K will be nice. Did 3K around the neighbourhood today and was not fast but enjoyable (7mins/km the first half, 8 mins/km the second half).

Well the good news is that my 8 yo finished her very first 10K today in 1 hour 18 minutes!! I ran 5.6 miles with her, and then the bad news.... My 14 yo had collapsed At mile 5.7 or so. She was unconscious! A friend ran back to get me and take me to the ambulance. She suffered a heatstroke, and we are still in the hospital. She was on pace to run a 47 minute race, and it was very hot here. Not sure why it happened. .

Orangemat. goldlining, firstcall:::  Thank you for responding!   I have decided that I will go to the gym tomorrow and walk on the treadmill and maybe do leg workout.  I can't sit around the house anymore!  I hope to get my drains out Monday.  I am so motivated to get back to my old self when I see how all of you guys keep going.  It has given me so much hope for myself......Thank you all so much!

Boy i've missed a lot of exciting chatter in a few days -- it's been a fantastic sunny weekend -- so i spent mostly outside -- building new deck (actually watching husband build new deck). Did a 10km with my husband this morning -- I did it in 58 min and i was happy with that -- i'll be in NY in spirit!

Another first -- i went out with no wig -- my hair is short, gray and curly -- so i felt rather "butchy"  but i am getting used to it.

Kitten -- I had a lumpectomy, followed by 4 rounds of chemo (12 weeks) and 30 days of radiation. I did not have any drainage tube issues but started to run on the treadmill in about 8 days -- i wore two bras to prevent bouncing. I ran all the way through chemo -- albeit many days slower and some on the treadmill -- if i woke up feeling nauseaus i went anyway telling myself i can always walk -- and you know what -- i always felt better after. And you will be pleased to know, contrary to all the dire warnings about fatigue during radiation -- i had none. In fact i regained all the speed I lost during chemo while i was getting the radiation. The only thing that annoyed was that after about four weeks my skin got irritated and i got shooting pains in my boob -- again i started wearing two bras. I am sure you will be fine.

So go and do whatever you can when ever you can -- i stopped listening to the onc's and all the specialists who kept telling me what not to do. Listen to your body!!

Best of luck with all -- it is not half so bad as you think it will be. :)
