What are you doing for fun??
I'd love to hear how you all are finding joy in your lives while we manage our disease. I find that if I schedule at least three pleasurable activities each week, it really helps my mood, and I often wind up doing a lot more spontaneously that I didn't plan on. We schedule our various treatments and never ending appointments, but we need to put some good times on our calendars, too.
Today I had lunch with a dear friend who really "gets it" regarding my cancer. We talked about everything but.
I caught up with another old friend this evening, and we talked about our grown kids, our husbands, people we knew together over the years and had a great time over a glass of red wine. We made plans to see each other next week--we'll get coffee and then go down to the lighthouse where people have been sighting whales for the last few days and hope we can see one.
My daughter (27) wants me to see The Avengers with her next week.
Planning fun is serious business and essential for our mental heath. We all need to do it no matter how well (or not) we feel, even it's just having a good meal or watching a mystery on TV. And while we're enjoying ourselves, we're making memories for the people we care about.
Post some of your ideas so I can steal them!

I am secretly taking a weekend golf lesson. If Im not too terrible I hope to play with my kids, a ladies league, maybe even my husband...
-
I lock the bathroom door, turn on some crazy 70's funk, and dance like a fool.
The botanical gardens are nice for a lift, too, but generally I don't dance there.

I am planning a trip to Disney World. I am also going to get a kitten. I am keeping Katrina my 7 year old busy this summer with a couple of math and science programs.
I have done some shopping . I am doing some crochaying. Making cat/kitten toys. Making a blanket for the new kitten we are going to get.
Lots of fun things.

Teaching first grade is an enormous pleasure and privilege and takes many more hours than most people imagine. But best of all, I have my new, and first, grandchild to spend time with. Going to a bridal show with younger dd who is getting married next June. I also have two funny small dogs and a small patio garden. If it weren't for bc, life would be perfect!

I took my son to see the Avengers in 3D at the weekend which was fun. The dawn chorus is out in full voice around here at the moment which always cheers me up. Driving the car with the top down and going around roundabouts (circles) 3 or 4 times with the music pumping and the kids screaming for me to stop in the back is always big fun too!
The big thing I'm looking forward to (assuming I'm not back on the dreaded TAX) is the Vintage Festival in July. You can look at the details here: http://www.vintagefestival.co.uk/
The idea is that you go dressed from your favourite vintage era (1920's - 1980's). There are loads of different vintage themed areas, dancing, bands, a roller disco (which my 12 year old daughter is very excited about). The big plus about this event is that it's being held in the stately home, 5 mins walk from my house so no camping out and hot showers at home every day. Hurrah!

I don't really plan plan but what comes up i always try to do---and there are lots of grad. parties and birthday this summer and I look forward to be with my family and friends alot--so although quiet---it's still fun for me. My youngest daughter and grandaughter live in California. I miss them quite a bit. We decided to get together once a month. Airfare isn't all that bad when I think about the meaning of money right now. So, I bought ticket for May and a ticket for June. My grandaughter is graduating 8th grade and I surely want to be at that. My daughter and her guy are coming here in July. Knowing that we will have one weekend a month gives me a huge lift.
I also now schedule a lunch date with my stepdaughter and her little girl once a week. Thats always sweet. Tomorrow, we are going to buy plants at a local ffa sale. Next week we are going to poach waterlillies for a frog pond we are working on. Don't turn us in please
I told my oldest daughter I need her now while I'm alive, too. So we're planning a once a month starting this Sunday. Just knowing I have these plans keeps the depressed feelings at bay.
I'm still working, takes alot of my energy. Since diagnosed, I got into this routine of working, coming home and dropping from exaustion. I decided to wipe that out as much as possible. So, I've been taking a walk every morning and a bike ride every evening. I start out tired but end up really enjoying . I'm hoping the more I do the more I can do.

Love this thread!
We did Disney World last month. We're going to Annapolis, MD in two weeks for a wedding. I would love to get another dog. Thinking of a black-and-tan hound. We're blessed to be @ 15 minutes from Ocean City, NJ so we enjoy going to the boardwalk and beach.

I like this thread. I need to start doing some fun things and get out more.
I will start scheduling things. All my friends work, but one is single.

I am going up North in Michigan for the weekend for a 3 day birthday party for my cousin. She is FILTHY rich and turning 60 so her husband and kids threw her a 3 day bash. They are paying for all the guest's hotel, meals, etc. Tonight we are having a cocktail party and dinner at an italian Restaurant. Tomorrow is winery tours and shopping. Saturday night another cocktail party and dinner and then off the corner bar for more drinks. I am going with my sister and her husband and my relatively new boyfriend. I think this weekend I will think very little about this disease!!! Can't wait to get away.

I LOVE this thread!!
I try to work some small fun into each day - whether it's a walk at the local park, being silly with a friend, or just savoring a good meal. But right now, I'm super excited about a trip to the beach - we leave 2 weeks from tomorrow!!!
-
how smart to plan happy times.
mostly i just try to keep up with my labors (which are really fun - decorating and planting) - i love to go to estate sales and my bro and friend both take me.
cut the dog's hair.... things like that.

Just reading about fun lifts my spirits. I'm trying to decide what sounds better; Alesta's festival or Jenni's cousin's party. I like this thread too!
-
I practice yoga regularly and read alot. Leaving for Switzerland & Paris next week. Going to a music festival this weekend. Will be reading Fifty Shades of Grey next, I hear it's quite the read, if you know what I mean! Ha, ha!! Anyhow, yoga has been my salvation and I'm trying to learn how to meditate.
-
Canoe trip next weekend - hope the black flies aren't biting yet.

A friend of mine taught me the basics of beading (jewelry). I'm so into it now and have fun scouring thrift stores and yard sales for pieces I can rework inexpensively. I make costume jewelry and have even sold a few pieces at a local gallery. The extra income is nice too.
Decided to try and start growing some herbs in the garden and that'll be quite a challenge in the Tucson heat!
Planning a trip to WI in July to see old friends.
Since I'm single, have been trying the dating thing. Oy!
My cancer center offers yoga and meditation classes so hopefully next week will go check them out.
My daughter turned me on to a cancelled tv show, "Friday Night Lights" so I watch the episodes on Netflicks at night since tv is usually so dumb
I've always wanted to learn how to do glassblowing and pour bronze but thinking I'll leave those for the younger crowd!
Could go on and on but don't want to pirate the thread.
FUN, FUN, FUN. -
I have two family reunions to attend. One in June the other in August. Planning to go to Eureka Springs, AR. in July. Would really like to do Taste of Chicago in July. I have a 5 month old Maltese..he is quite the handfull!!!! Going to a friends birthday dinner on Sunday Had chemo on THursday, so I'm praying I'll feel up to it as I really want to do this.

I am eagerly watching this thread. Most of my "fun" activities involve working, which I will have to give up next month.
Right now, I'm a reader. I read a book a day, which is quite expensive. A bunch of friends took up a collection for me so I can download Amazon books - it was nearly $1000.00. The way I read it is getting close to the end, so I have learned to torrent books to supplement. It's not ideal and many books I like to read on not available that way and I feel a little guilty doing it but so far, it is my only way to relax. Amazon also has a daily deal - a 99 cent book (kindle) - some of them are dreck but some have been interesting reads and usually not in a genre I would choose.
I have only one or two friends left in my area - one also had cancer but is not Stage IV and complains too much to me - she doesn't understand what I'm dealing with. The other is working and I don't see her often.
I wish I had more of Apple in me and liked to do householdy things. I'm amazed at those of you who can travel - my stomach just won't take it.
Will be reading this thread regularly! I'm afraid when I give up my job my world is going to be all cancer, all the time.

Spring and summer are lake time for us. We try and go to our small condo on Tablerock lake near Shell Knob, Missouri, all the weekends we can and then take a couple of weeks there as well. We boat, and just relax in the sun and water. My favorite thing to do is to hang out in my life jacket with my hat, sunglasses and a cold beer. The water is so clear there it is amazing.

Planned a two night get away to a RI beach with my 21 yr old daughter..pre-pre season...prior to memorial day so the prices are better even though it probably wont be beach weather...we'll bike...eat at a restaurant overlooking the ocean.....still enjoying life...cause aside from dying im perfectly healthy!

I am hoping to plan a trip to see someone very special with my son Spencer. I am looking forward to doing some gardening, biking, camping, kayaking and swimming if not too cold. We hope to go to visit my SIL in NC this fall if my DH can swing it with work since he is scheduled to be off again for his resection in the end of May/June. Some days I do lots of stuff, like spure of the moment painted a bedroom despite vertigo episodes on and off.( could not do the upper walls, cant look up with out falling off the ladder and almost out the 2nd story bedroom window that was open) My DH is deaf so he would not of heard me..maybe seen me floating on top of the pool liner the next day! Just kidding! He would miss me! I love to watch comedies or romance comedies, silly westerns, read, be lazy.
Going to see my oldest son for mother's day and have dinner at his place with my DH and 2 other sons. I love this thread. so cheerful and great ideas. Thanks. Dawn

Over memorial day weekend, (it being a 3 dayer), my sister planned her daughter's graduation party and most of my siblings are going. 5 out of 6 at least and my older brother might also.
I am also hoping to catch up with a friend in Michigan.

I know that the OP's point is that we should "plan" for fun; but it's also important to me that I seize the fun that presents itself unplanned. This afternoon the sun came out for the first time all week, and my kids found a little turtle in the road while rollerblading. We have brought it home, built a little habitat for it with the promise that we'll return it to the wild within a day. They are THRILLED. What a nice afternoon.

Wow Coolbreeze. Don't want to hijack, but all that reading explains why you are such a good writer. Please write, write and write when you stop working. You have a talent.
-
Thanks KSkier. I'll probably update the blog a bit more often but on the other hand - how much can one say about cancer? This disease is inherently narcissistic and we, by necessity, have to spend a lot of time thinkiing about ourselves - but I don't want to devolve it into "my stomach hurts today" etc. Because we think about it all the time doesn't mean everybody wants to hear about it all the time.
I may have to swing it in new directions but not sure what yet.
I'm too ADD for book writing but not for reading! Reading has been my passion my entire life.
I am going to redecorate my bedroom. I have a visual that should be fun. I can't use both my arms though so will have to rely on people to help me, but I want to do something fun with it - that is a project I can manage, even though I'm not a housey-type. The colors I want to do it in are in a rug at IKEA so I should go and see if they still have it - it all hinges ont that rug!!!

1) Dumpster diving during neighborhood cleanups (you'd be amazed at what people throw out, including antique furniture, cookware, old crank handle ice cream makers....)
2) Talking to my parrot and hearing him talk back!
3) Reading mysteries
4) Planting and gardening
5) Feeding the goldfish in my pond and watching them jump over the bubble pump (they queue up just like at Disney!)

Coolbreeze - I'd been travelling lots last year when first rediagnosed and still had lots of energy. Now those cumulative effects of Navelbine seem to have hit like a mac truck and my last trip was totally exhausting - the whole airport, baggage, security thing. My next trip in July, gonna use that cancer card and get a wheelchair and let them push me around. Have to look into how one qualifies for that, can't be too hard. Also will be looking for direct flights only, no red-eye flights and flights that depart and arrive at reasonable ( for me ) hours.
You've probably already done this, but just in case you haven't, I find lots of books at thrift stores that are sometimes current and in good condition, usually for just a couple dollars. Then if the book turns out to be crappy, don't feel so bad about tossing it. In Tucson, we have a huge store that gives trade credit for used books and other media but only if they feel they can move it and then you only get credit for a fraction of it's original value - it's a fun option though and they have lots of nice chairs around so one can just camp out the whole day with a stack!
I like your plan to do your bedroom. My entire house is painted white so I've chosen one wall to paint and see how that goes - if I could only decide on a color! -
Coolbreeze - i invite you to visit my basement.
-
I don't think I've ever been in a basement before. We don't have them out here in CA.
-
Birding... they are really active now, nuptual plumage, babies in nests.
go to dog park and walk in creek.
