Okay...I am going to make it official today. I will sign up for my first ever run. A 5K near me on May 6... The Delaware River Run in Port Jervis... Oh...the commitment of it all...
(There are only about 300 runners and about 100 walkers...I just have the jitters about actually putting a number on myself, I guess...)
But...I just have to go for it. I mean...I run 5k all the time. There is a guy in his forties that I know who never ran before February and is quite overweight. And he is signed up for a half marathon. If he can do it (and he seems to be doing it well), then I have no excuses, right? Okay...so I sign up today!

CLC, I felt exactly the same way the first time I signed up for a race! In fact, I still get nervous, each time...
eulabt, so happy you decided to join up with a charity and are running NYC after all! My husband ran with Team For Kids last year and was exceedingly pleased with the VIP treatment the group provided for all their runners, both pre and post race. I'm certain that's how it is with all the big fundraisers out there. Good for you!
I'm waiting on two friends to show up at my house in about 15 minutes, and then it's off to the races for us! Just a local 5k, but still, I didn't sleep all night and my stomach's a mess! Happy running to all

Congrats on getting signed up eulabt! As for the half tomorrow... best of luck!! Once you get warmed up you won't notice the cold (at least that's what I'm telling myself as I am getting psyched to get out there this morning).
And CLC, I have to echo what the others have said. You can do this!!

Dang firstcall, you are good!! I thought this would be just an accounting of races already scheduled. Now that my 10K and HM goals are in writing, I guess I have to follow through on 'em!

I love the calendar! If we're calendaring out to November, I have registered for the Midsummer Night's Run (15K) in Toronto August 18, and the runDisney Wine & Dine Half November 10 as well.
CLC, I bet you will have fun with the official run. I'm sure not everyone is a joiner, but I so LOVE the organized runs. I cannot run with one other person (or my husband has to stay behind me so I can't see him) because I get lured off my own pace and run out of air, but running with 15,000 other people? Magic. I am completely absorbed in watching the other people (usually as they pass me!) and a lot of the time, am conscious of nothing from the lungs down. It just seems easier to run in that environment than just regular on the street.

Oh, I'm so glad everyone's liking the race calendar idea! Yes, seeing it in print like this really does reinforce one's commitment to run and train. Though in my case, it didn't propel me to another PR, unfortunately... my 5k this morning was 26:48, not my best effort, but still not so shabby. And because it was a very small race, and most of my running club was at a 15k today, I actually placed in my AG! Got second place, first time getting an award ever, woohoo! And considering that this was my last race in this AG, it made it especially sweet.
And thanks again, firstcall, for maintaining our race calendar, you're doing great!

Great job everyone! I'm still not ready to run, but we walked 6 miles at a pace that was one minute/mile faster than last week! At this rate, I could finish a marathon in 8 hours!

I am still swollen so avoiding too much jostling until I can get in to the LE treatment. I settled for my shoulder physio exercises with weights, some leg machines, and some exercise bike for cardio. Not even as interesting as the treadmill, but it felt good when I stopped :-)Looking forward to reading about tomorrow's runs! -

I ran this last year..very hilly course..hope to get out and run it a few times before the actual race..I see that some of you run way under a 10 minute mile...that's awesome...I'm at 10 minutes now..hoping to get it 9 min very soon...working on trying to stretch my legs out more....and to push myself more...taking longer strides is better ..right? I'm kinda new at this...

Titan, if it makes you feel any better, I would love to break a 10-min/mi pace! But I'm shuffling along a heckuva lot faster than I did while in treatment.
I think I found a 10K that I could try. It's less than 6 weeks away and my comfort level right now is between 3-4 miles. Think I could get enough training in time?

Finished my 10K this morning, right about at the 12 minute mile mark. (Haven't retrieved my official time yet.) I'm impressed with all your single digit mile runners! I figure I may be slow, but as I always say I beat all the people who never got off the couch this morning!
Signed up for a "5K9" Paws on the Pavement race May 19th in Hagerstown MD- it benefits the local humane society, and you can run with your dog. So Mikey the miniature pinscher and I will be running that. Maybe it'll help burn off some of that min pin energy - naw, he'll just be getting warmed up by the end!

firstcall, put me down for the "Fast and Furriest" 10K in Rochester NY, June 9th. You can delete my aspirational 'summer 10K.' And if we're adding detail, my 5K on May 13th is for the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester; the May 31st race is the Chase Corporate Challenge in Rochester.
My hands were shaking as I hit the 'submit' button on the race registration page....
Today is the 1-yr anniversary of my dx. What a way to claim victory over my health!

Mary, sorry, I was so jazzed about my own news I miss your post too! Congrats to you!!
Congrats in advance also to eulabt on her HM! Can't wait to hear how you did.
As for me, I just came back from an ALMOST one-hour run today. I lost track of time and only ran 55 minutes (forgot about my 5-min warmup when I decided to stop), but I definitely could have gone a full hour. I would have to go back to be sure but, I think this is my first 5+ miler of the year. Woot!!

wow..to you ladies doing half and whole marathons..that is awesome! I'm tempted to try a 6k this summer.....I know I can do it..probably walk/run it..you guys are incentive for this!
I think with the longer distance I'm afraid I won't be able to finish..it's a mental thing I guess..I love this thread..just found it....plan to spend alot of time here

as far as training for 5k's etc...I have read that running as fast as you can for short distances....running slowly for long distances, running hills...all that helps with you training...to build up your strength...sometimes I run as fast as I can for 2 miles, walk the next 2...then the next day do the hill thing for 2 miles..(not all hills ha ha)...just to break it up..I like the track the best but it can be boring plus it is flat and you can't count on any 5k course being flat..dang it..

Titan go for it! My logic has always been, if I can run half the distance, I can walk the rest. So when I could run 5K I tried a 10K. When I could run a 10K, I tried a half. I almost got up to running the entire thing, but then with the surgery setbacks I am back to walking the last bit of that. I still hope to catch up to where I was and when I can run the whole half, in a reasonable time, I will try for a full. Probably not an ultra, though. Wouldn't want to be wacky! (Like there is anything not wacky about 26 miles!)

The Flower City Half was a great race to run. It was cold, but sunny and I took my time and enjoyed it. My time was 1:47:59! Not a PR, but is felt great to not push myself! It is amazing how a good run makes you feel.
KKS_RD- Good luck! I may run some of those races too! I do really enjoy running the smaller races in Rochester.

OK, I need to join you ladies here. I am going to do the Diva Dash in Boston on September 8, it's a 3 mile run with obstacles set up along the way. I am not a runner, so I am starting the couch to 5k plan to get into running shape. Have a lot of runners in my family (including my 78 year old brother), so if I complete the couch to 5k I'm sure they will be inviting me to their races as well. But for now I will concentrate on September 8.

Hello all. New to this thread and running. I've always wanted to run a 5K and since dx I've been even more determined. Just started to do the couch to 5K program. I'm doing well and hope to run my first 5k in August. My employer sponsors one.
I have a question that I'm sure is posted on bco in another spot but thought I'd ask here. What do you all wear for orts bras? I have a couple of Danskins, high impact that work pretty well but I still feel movement. Not bad but I'd like the support to be better. Any suggestions? Had my exchange in March and PS says i'm good to go, just make sure the jubblies are supported well. -
My old favourite was a Lululemon The Bust Stops Here, but they don't make it any more. The Ta Ta Tamer doesn't really tame to my satisfaction. Having spent a long time being DD, I like absolute immobilization. The key for support is having key parts of the cups be non-stretch and covering enough of the top of the cups. If it is stretchy or open, it will bounce. (I'm presuming C+. I assume it is not as big an issue for A-B.) I also like to be sure there is separation to ensure no cleavage and chafing, especially now that parts of that are numb for me.
I just bought a Shock Absorber at the London Marathon Expo, and it seems to be nonstretch and bounce-resistant. Have not run in it. Waiting for some swelling to go down. This is apparently the top selling sports bra in UK and they fit the same size as properly fitted fashion bras. I see there is a USA website for the company as well. The product pictures are the same. I think mine is the "B5044". I paid £34 on special at the expo (about CAD$55) and I see it's USD$79 online! Holy! But a good sports bra is as important as the shoes, really, isn't it?
