learnin - So jealous of being out in cold weather! Although we've had a couple pleasant days (high in the high 70s), it's going to be back to the high 80's this week (and I doubt we'll see 70s again until October!).
-
yes, I am elibible for a deferment for Boston to next year. That will give me something to look forward to, and train for. Meanwhile, I'm thinking I'll try another 6 mile run tomorrow, and see how my feet hold up.
-
firstcall -- congrats on finishing your chemo!! Sorry about the nails -- take it easy for a while or bike because i didn't and one of my toenail has never recovered (small price).
learnin -- sounds like you are enjoying our weather here in Toronto -- did a very cold 7km on Sunday but ran indoors on Monday and today -- yes, i am one of those weird people who actually enjoy the treadmill (and it is easier on my knees). How lucky you are that your son runs with you!
-
firstcall- congrats on being done with chemo. Take it easy and you will be back to running like you use to in no time.
Tomorrow is the big day to see if I got into the ING NY Marathon. Wish me luck:)
-
You and me both, eulabt!
Congrats on being done with chemo, firstcall!
Hope everyone's doing well and running happy
-
I didn't get into the ING Marathon. I guess next year!
-
I didn't get in either.
So what race are you going to run then, eulabt? I've been hearing really good things about Mohawk-Hudson in Albany, NY, but that isn't the best weekend for me (Oct. 7). Hmm....
OK, other choices are Philly on 11/18 or Baltimore (which my husband wants to do, but I'm not partial to it) on 10/13. The Avon Walk is 10/21, so anything after that date is preferable, I think. Oy...
-
orangemat- I could do Philly, we are moving there at the end of the summer. I really wanted my one and only marathon to be NY. I just love how easy it is for me to run in NYC......Damn, now I have to research.....
-
Columbus is a spectator friendly, fast down hill course.
-
i'm so sorry you guys didn't get into NY -- a few years ago i got in but my husband didn't so he got a spot through a travel agent. They booked our flights and rooms (cost a tiny bit more but not much) The package came with a spot in the NYC Marathon. Not sure if travel agents still do that but it may be worth your while to look into it.
NY is an amazing first marathon -- it was my first (and we always remember our first
don't we?) The crowd and enthusiasm virtually carry you!
Hope you can find a way to get in.
good luck!
-
I spoke too soon... checked my credit card account online again at 6pm, and lo and behold, there was a charge for $255! I'M IN!!
-
orangemat - CONGRATS something to look forward to

Hi everyone! As you know I'm a long way away from every being marathon-ready... but I have really exciting news to share. I just had the best run since before chemo last year. A rare set of circumstances allowed me to get in a 4-miler on my own this evening (perfect weather for it) instead of running with the Couch to 5K group.
I hadn't been paying close attention to my pace while doing the C25K runs because it just felt so good to be back into a routine, and after the post-rads fatigue and general busyness of life I didn't want to pressure myself to perform. So tonight, I headed out and at the announcement that we were 10 minutes in, I realized I had already gone about a mile! Feeling quite chuffed, I pressed on until it was too dark to be really safe.
When I mapped the run later I was quite pleased to see my overall pace was roughly 10:45 min/mi where during treatment it was more like 12:00-13:00. Basically, I am back to the kind of condition I was in a year ago, just before my dx.
I just want to remind anyone going through treatment (BTW, congrats, firstcall!) of my treatment stats - see my signature. Amazing to think that 2 months ago I was still in the throes of post-rads fatigue.
Thanks for letting me share. I feel more confident than ever that I might be able to take on the challenge of a 10K, 15K, or maybe even a half.
-
Kat, that is AWESOME news!! So happy for you!! Yes, things do shift at some point, and somehow you body begins to be your own again... just takes patience....
-
orangemat- I am so happy for you!!!!Let the training begin!
kks_rd Great news. You must feel awesome!
-
Such great news here all around! Good for everyone!
I am back from London. It was cooler than the running clothes I took, and my husband is nursing a wrecked ankle and knee and I wanted to drag him to the places I was planning to run, so we walked instead. I sort of miss having the Nike+ GPS maps for "souvenirs", but I did not lose out on foot time. I measured at least 35km in what I was able to map out, mainly on 5 of the days. We got ourselves a front row position at Mile 25 of the London Marathon across from the London Eye and watched the wheelchair athletes, elite men and elite women come in. It would definitely be a great run to do, someday, if I can get up to that distance. We did hit the expo which was just a great expo, and did some shopping. Still very jet lagged.
-
orangemat -- congrats on getting in! It's such a great run. Good for you!
Kat -- congrats on your run, so happy for you -- funny how our goals change isn't it -- i used to run 9 min miles and during chemo i rejoiced when I managed a 12 minuter ! But it's all good.
goldlining -- it must have been fantastic to be there -- so much positive energy -- hope hubby's knee/ankle gets better
I am going to start training for a fall marathon -- actually i injured my knee before BC and that has held me up more than anything. Oddly i never got the least bit fatigued during radiation -- in fact i felt great after chemo, it's the Tamox that killed me -- I guess we are all so different.
Now i am back to about 9.5 min miles and dying to build up mileage but i am afraid to do too much too soon and injur my knee again. One day at a time !
-
paradiju- your time is awesome. It must feel so good!
-
Excellent, paradiju! What race are you thinking of doing?
Oh, I just had a thought: we should keep track of what races we all have coming up, as a running (ha!) calendar. If firstcall doesn't mind doing the maintenance, being the "owner" of the thread, the lead post in this thread could be edited to list all our races every time we add a new one to the docket. Makes remembering other people's races a little easier to have the schedule right there on top, ya know? Just a thought....
-
orangemat - thats a great idea. I put a couple of people on the list to get it started, and I'll watch for others to keep it updated. And remember everyone - it doesnt have to be a specific distance. Any distance, any speed, lets keep each other going.

Hi My runner friends....is there any of you out there who had a Zometa infusion and have no side effects and can still run?? My osteoporosis Dexa scan came back sl worse than last year and now they want to give me Zometa as I can't take the oral stuff. I am training for the Chicago Marathon and don't want to be laid up. Any responses would be greatly appreciated.
Just so scared about taking this stuff. Need to make a decision soon.
Happy running to all.....
BJ

Oh I'm so glad you liked that idea, firstcall! I have a 5k tomorow, 4/28, in Bloomfield NJ, the Expand Your Horizons 5k. I'm also signed up for two more: Rubin Run 10k in Tenafly NJ on 5/13 and Celebrate Israel 4-miler in Central Park, NYC on 6/3. Happy editing!
Hi blackjack, no idea on the Zometa, but good luck to you!
-
Upcoming run: Niagara Falls Women's Half June 3 (better get training!)
-
Just a quite note to say thanks for the encouragement!
orangemat, so happy you got in! And I love your idea about sharing our race dates - thanks to firstcall for agreeing to manage it.
paradiju, I'm jealous of your time. You're right about those goals - it's all a matter of context.
goldlining, glad you were able to enjoy your trip even if you didn't get to run everything you wanted to.
blackjack, sorry, don't know about the zometa.
One last detail: I am officially signed up for a 5K on 5/13, benefits the local BC Coalition. I will also be signing up for a 3.5 mile race on 5/31. My intermediate goal will be to get ready for a 10K over the summer...... maybe a half by fall?
-
Hmm, seeing the races already listed in the OP, maybe it's better not to include mine. How "big" a race is OK to include?
-
All races are worthy of mention, Kat! In fact, I was about to add a local fun run that my daughter's HS is having to benefit her graduating class. Approximately 3 miles in the neighborhood, on May 19. And then there's the Avon Walk in NYC that I'm signed up for, October 20 & 21. The more the merrier!
-
OK - I'm not a marathoner like the rest of you, but I'm doing the Pike's Peek 10K this Sunday (Rockville, MD) - and that's the longest race I've ever attempted. (It's straight down a major road called Rockville Pike, hence the Pike's Peek name - no, I'm not climbing a mountain in Colorado!)
I'm a slow plodder, so my goal is to beat the trailing van!!!!
-
You guys are such intrepid runners -- regardless of time. I am a bit embarrassed to say i don't often do races. I mostly run for fun. I usually just did one marathon a year and i have done some 10kms as part of triathlons but i haven done either since BC. The only real race i have done this past year is the Terry Fox 10km which we have done every year for 25! I did that and a 60km charity walk last year -- both during chemo.
I will do those two, both in September again this year -- does that count? (Where is this calendar? -- sorry i am a techno peasant
)
As far as a fall marathon goes, i will start training by upping my weekly mileage and starting long runs on the weekends but i'm not signing up for any until i am sure my knee can still handle the distance (boo hoo). So far i am good with 10 to 15 km
If i can i'll do something easy to get into that is near to Toronto (but not the Toronto marathon which i did in 2010 -- it was not so nice) -- any suggestions?
BlackJack -- sorry i don't know about Zometa but i did some googling and probably found the same things you have - looks like most people tolerate it well -- good luck with it and on your Chicago run it too is a fantasitic Marathon!!
Happy running this weekend everyone!
-
Well I'm by no measure a runner but get points because I keep trying. I hear orangemat whispering 'you can do it, you can do it'.
I registered this week for a 5K Walk to Curb Hunger on 5/19 and another on 6/23 'Patriots Race to Summer' 5k/8k run. We'll see how it goes.
-
Well, I decided to run for Fred's Team in the ING NY Marathon. I signed up yesterday! I really want my first marathon to mean a lot and I love running in NYC. So I guess the training begins! I am also suppose to run the Flower City Half tomorrow in Rochester NY, but it is suppose to be freezing. I am sure I will do it and just be really cold:)
