I stopped vacuuming some time ago. It is bad for my back, and with a cancer DX, I really can't afford screw up my back any further (next step is surgery). I try never to overlook the upside ;)

It's raining - Miss Poppy not happy and is snuggled up in her little bed meowing at me. I love it - no need to water. It's only going to be 23C today (73 F) - finally cooler weather. I've been wearing winter pj's for the past few nights plus we have a blanket on - looking forward to much colder nights :)

Athena - how are you? I hope you feel tremendous relief at being free. I had a job about 6 years ago - I was there for 4 1/2 years and used to cry every morning when I woke up. The boss was a total prick and I was paid way under the normal wage. I looked for another job every day of those 4 1/2 years and finally escaped, so I do know what sort of relief that can bring. A couple of years after I left, I helped a guy from there get a job at my current place and the prick was threatening to sue me for stealing the staff member. He has never looked back and has married, had a baby and bought a house since he left - it helps when you get special rates on your mortgage when you work for a bank. I love that I rescued him.

Thank you, Susie....well I am still there for another month and just beginning my search. I love the work itself, so that's ok. I am just happy to be free. The shit that floated to the top and supervises several of us now leaves me alone, so that is what matters. :-) Her overlord says they would like me to do some consulting work when I leave. And that's fine. I am committed to the work and the cause.

I am surprised at how unworried I am, though I should be, since I hung up my hat before looking around. The search begins. How I hate job hunting....

Hope your job is going well?

That is a great article. BTW, that alarmist insurance thread on the advocacy forum just turned, predictably, again. I am sick of misinformation being repeated and the facts being ignored.

Oh, Rosemary, that is SO, SO sad.  I hope there is something they can do to help her. It's so painful to know a friend is in such trouble, and there's nothing we can do - but what the Chaplain says. Thinking of you too....

Thank you guys. I am praying for her to. I don't know what happened. She went into the hospital last night and this morning she was in intensive care in an induced coma. Not good.

Rosemary, from what I've read, an induced coma is to help the body systems to rest and recover.  Perhaps that will be the case with your friend -- fingers crossed that this is so.  Hugs to you.

She is going to wake up and be told she can't go home and animal control has taken her cats-her 10 cats. She is living in the house she grew up in. Losing all of that may be harder for her to recover from than the pneumonia. She has really good friends and neighbors. She will need us more than ever.

Athena - my job is going well at the moment - nice small project which will finish in a couple of weeks. I've volunteered to go on the upgrade project and seems they've accepted me to work on it. It will be tough - we've got 2 versions of the software to catch up on. It's supposed to go for 9 months I think, so that will keep me out of trouble. I've got a new team leader - he seems to be ok so far.

Still raining - Steve's golf got cancelled - Miss Poppy still curled up in her warm bed. Shopping done. Nachos for lunch - yumm - I make a great nachos using refried beans.

    Athena

You are confusing people with facts on that other thread. I just don't have it in me o fight that fight tonight but I know that the feds can run a cost effective health plan.

Now back to our regularly scheduled programing.

We already have a single-payer government-run healthcare plan in the U.S. It is called Medicare, and it works quite well. Is there corruption -- yes, among doctors and care providers trying to game the system. Is there corruption in the government administration of Medicare? Go to the webpage of HHS/OIG and see who is getting nailed for stealing from Medicare.

In all the years we've had single-payer healthcare in Ontario, the only cases of fraud have been (just as HL says) by healthcare providers themselves.  One example:  Some docs started charging an administration fee ($15-25) per visit, which was quickly nipped in the bud.  As for admin costs, well, my family doctor has a secretary/receptionist and a nurse practitioner.  He drives a Porsche, sends his 2 kids to private school and has a lovely home and a vacation home.  Last time I saw him, we talked about a 30' sailboat he was thinking of buying.  He's doing just fine under single-payer!

    Hi Everyone!

Okay .. what's up with this "Athena" weather down here?!?  The temps never reached 60 degrees today.  I want my sunshine!

I got all my hanging baskets filled with begonias and something else .. can't remember the name of it.  I have 10 hanging baskets so it was quite a chore.  I have a bunch of pots yet to fill on the front porch.  I'll take a picture of the porch and gazebo garden when I'm all done.  It looks so pretty.

Sunnyflowers and Athena ... I just can't read that "other" thread.  It's much too upsetting so I stay away from it.

Rosemary .. I hope your friend is okay today.  I'm so sad she will lose her precious kitties.  What happened that they put her in a coma ... I thought she had pneumonia.

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend.

    hugs,

    Bren

BinVa, all the hanging plants and planters sound lovely. I've been wanting to add things to my garden to bring more butterflies. Maybe pots and hanging plants are the way to go. thanks for the idea.

Now that we have some trees in the yard I'm so looking forward to doing more with the yard. Unfortunately we lost all the tress a few years back because of a hurricane that came through. I have never had the desire till now with dealing with my moms BC and my dad's prostate cancer and now my BC. It has been a long 6 years. It feels so good to finally have the desire to start living again.

    Kira

butterflies LOVE buddhelia bushes - sometimes even called a butterefly bush.  Lovely purple flowers. Don't know how they'd do in FLA.  Low maintenance too..

Bren - where DO you get the energy to put up all those pots?  WOW. I'm impressed.  I manage a few pots of nasturtium, and a few violas ( tiny, little violet like pansey flowers, LOVE THEM!) and that's it. Except for my veggie garden.  BTW - BELOW 20 tonight.  Lots of friends are out helping farmers cover fruit trees....

Me, I'm inside keeping warm an painting ;-)

    SunflowersMa

It looks like they will grow in Florida. They compare them to lilacs which I just love. I will have to check into them. Thanks for the info!

Great - they don't smell delicious like lilacs, but they are much lower maintenance - and a real favorite of butterflies

Kira .. Zinnias are easy to grow from seeds and the butterflies love them.  They are bright jewel colored flowers.  This is the first year I haven't planted any zinnia seeds.  They get pretty tall too, about 4 feet.  I'll see if I can find some pics of my zinnias and I'll post them for you.

I am so happy you are feeling better and stronger.

    hug,

    Bren

Bren, your flowers are gorgeous!  I like lots of colors and variety (sort of a meadow enthusiast), so the zinnias look wonderful.  Can I come visit, and sit on that bench in your gazebo? You'll have to warm it up some, though.  I don't do well below 70 degrees F.  :)

rosemary, that's so sad about your friend.  It's hard enough to be dealing with a medical crisis, but to suddenly find out that your whole life has changed and there's nothing you can do about it?  Not going home? No kitties???  <sigh>

I promised Athena I would stay away from that other thread, and I've almost kept my promise.  No matter what people thought of the original topic, it's long gone.  Hey, but weren't these boards even hotter 4 years ago?  (Dare I say that?)

    BinVa,

The Zinnias are lovely. I will have to see if I can grow them in Florida. By the way your gazebo is lovely! What a relaxing place to go to in the afternoon!
