Baby it's cold outside
Comments

Wednesday it was very cloudy and yesterda, although it was clear, was quite chilly and breezy. We went to a friend's home for a glass of wine after work to sit by their pond and visit. They live in the country and it was too cold to sit outside. No one, not even DH (Who can sweat in a snowstorm) could stand it!
I checked out the Disney's California Adventure "ABC Soap Opera bistro" on Google. It closed in 2002.
Sheila, You will have fun. I am sure most of them run about the same way. Enjoy

Man! Yesterday was pretty darn warm! My AC in my car went on the fritz so I took it into a dealership at lunch and $200 later, it is coolin' just fine. When I was driving there at 11:00 am it was already 78°. I saw it got up to 88°. It is only supposed to get to 78° today.
Heading back down to your neck of the woods Saturday, Nancy. Hope you've got nice weather planned!
Did you check out that website, Sheila?
-
Yes I checked out the 'great smoky mountain railroad' (www.gsmr.com) site and got the information there for their trips.
This morning it was about 45 when I got up and I think it was in the mid 70's when I left work. Tonight they are calling for temps in the mid 30's and a freeze warning is in effect for this area. When I got to the inn on Sunday night, I noticed that the room was warm so I opened the window about an inch and left it up all night (no AC) and got chilly overnight but when I got up I noticed the radiators in the room were warm. After I closed the window the room warmed up nicely. The radiators have been warm to the touch all week compared to last week when they were cold. You can never tell in the mountains what the temp will be like from one day to the next in the spring time. my daughter-in-law who has moved from Canada said she wishes the weather would get the temps straight, she was used to 4 seasons all year, not 4 seasons in a week. I told her to get used to spring in the Carolinas, unpredictable weather.

I am not familiar with radiators. I mean I have sene them in some older homes around here, but mostly they are now decorative. So, do they radiate the heat per a thermostat?
-
There is not a thermostat in each room, when the main boiler is turned on the hot water flows through the pipes/radiator and the heat exchanges through the metal radiator fins to the air and the cooler water then flows back to the boiler. you can control the heat in each room by adjusting how much hot water flows through the radiator by the flow valve on each radiator, more water, more heat, less water less heat. Reading the history of the Inn, it used to not have heat and was only opened summer months, when they renovated the Inn in the late 90's, they received a donation of 200 radiators from the local college(Western Carolina University) who was remodeling their dorms and getting rid of the radiators. They were the same vintage as the Inn so they fit the style of the Inn perfectly. They do however have electric heaters in the bathrooms so you can have a warm room when you take your shower or bath.
it doesn't heat the room fast since it isn't forced air but it does take the chill out of the room. it is a dry heat though and I am having a slight bloody trace when I blow my nose in the mornings.
-
I have heard of teapots being set on radiators to add humidity to the rooms. Thank you for the explanation, Sheila.
My ex wouldn't allow me to use the forced air heating. We heated a 2500 sq ft home with one pellet stove. I am spoiled now with a comfy home year round. Well, in Summer DH keeps it a bit chilly, but it beats the alternative.
It has been raining pretty steadily for the past two hours. Rain is supposed to hang around until Saturday. Cold air will be moving in Friday night and might bring snow to the passes.
-
We cancelled our trip for the weekend. It appears the nursery we were heading too got so much rain and more expected that they don't feel that it will be safe. (Muddy and slippery).
We had forced air heating my whole life. I remembr hearing it start up in the middle of the night and I imagined there was a lion growling in the house.
-
In my lifetime it seams like about the only kind of heat I haven't lived with is a fireplace as the sole source of heat. Besides the usual sorces like natural gas, propane, oil, coal and saw dust generated forced air and electric there was the house with a coal burning kitchen stove with a coal pot belly in the living room and hot water. In collage most of the campus was heated with steam heated radiators. The steam tunnels ran under the sidewalks and kept them clear of ice and snow in the winter.
Edited to add, I forgot the wood burning stove we originally had here. We replaced it with a propane stove with a fan. We supplement it with electric space heaters in two room the heat dosen't reach.
-
Another morning at 32 degrees, highs expected to hit 70. Yesterday morning when I was driving to work the local grocery store had the flats of plants pulled on the walk where they were protected some from the roof and covered the front half with sheets to protect them from the cold and frost.
-
We had a fireplace in the home I raised our children, shortly after we moved in we put a wood burninginsert into it and heated the house fairly well. I could pack5-7 16" logs in it at bedtime and it would heat the house for 8 hours. When that wore out, we bought the pellet insert which also worked well. Even though there was a ceramic "log" in it, it was not the same as watching a log fire.
There were a couple of funnel clouds here on Wednesday. We had some rain yesterday afternoon, but today it is supposed to bring cold air and rain in.
On Wednesday, one of our local weather-guessers gave the forecast and then said, something like..
But good news, this storm should be over by noon and we will have a warm and dry rest of the day.
Good news? We are on the verge of drought and when we don't get rain fo weeks, he says 'Bad news, no rain in sight!' So IMHO, he's trying to gain approval from people and not taking the stance of what is best for us.
I would like the report to show how positive every 1/100th of an inch of rain is benefiting us.
-
We got an inch of rain Friday and a couple of tenths through Friday night. The mountain ranges to the east and south are white.
-
Not nearly as much as I had hoped. I love thunder storms, and we only had a few claps of thunder Friday. I was looking forward to a light show Friday evening, and by the time I got home from work the whole things was waning.
-
When I left the office it had been raining. Dark clouds were still overhead. I made it to the Inn just as it was starting to pour down again. Thunderstorms here since 5:30 and looks like it may last into the night. It will be a good night to sleep, hearing the rain outside.
-
It was a mild day yesterday and I pulled weeds (which are loving the recent rains) until about 7:15 last night. We are supposed to have temps in the 90s this weekend. Just in time for an all day outdoor activity and an outdoor wedding Saturday!
So, Sheila, tell us more about the Inn.
-
Gone back to breaking high temp records this week after snow last week. don't know what to do with the summer stuff, leave it put away a bit longer or get it out now and keep the winter stuff out a bit longer1
-
I just hung most of my winter wear on the top rack in the closet. That will guarantee that we have another cool spell soon.
-
LOL!
-
It rained here most of the night and most of the day. they are calling for only 20% chance of rain tomorrow.
Ok Meece, here is a brief description of the inn. The inn reminds me of the house in 'Bridges of Madison County' with the tongue and groove pine boards on the walls and the large windows with the wide window and door casings. There are 50-52 rooms in the inn's 3 stories from single king bed/two double bed as the basic room, and rooms that are small suites. I have been in three different rooms on the first floor, each room has it's own unique character. they are painted different colors and the color matches the bedspread and curtains. There are large hooks on each side of the window to hook the curtains back and let the sun in. over each door into the hall is a transom window that they will open to help the air flow through the rooms. I have been in rooms with king size beds in them the headboards are made out of different natural wood limbs, the one I am in this week has a larger white birch frame on the outside and smaller pieces nailed together in the middle in a geometric pattern. Other rooms have had the white birch frame with woven designs in the middle made out of saplings. Some of the rooms have two double beds in it and the one I looked at with the double beds, their bed frames were antique metal frame beds. There is no AC but just open the window and you will get a nice cool breeze blowing in. In the winter it is heated by radiator heat. The floors are wide pine board floors that were refinished in the 1990's when the Inn was restored to it's beauty. The private bathrooms were added during the restoration, they are small but adequate, some of the larger rooms have larger bathrooms and the clawfoot bathtubs in them. They provide a bar of glycerin soap that is wonderful for washing your face. I am getting so spoiled staying here but this is my last week here.
-
So s this your vacation place? It sounds beautiful. Where is it located?
-
No it isn't my vacation place although I feel like I have been on a vacation. I was hired by a company that oversees the payments to medical providers for mental, physical disabilities as well as substance abuse to help with the help desk calls for their new system. They cover 16 counties in NC and the administrative office is in Sylva about 2 hours from my house. I will be working starting next week at the office in Lenoir but I have been in training here at Sylva for the past 3 weeks and they have put me up at this wonderful 100 year old inn. The website for this inn is www.balsammountaininn.net and you can see some of the pictures of the inn from it's early days and now.
-
What a beautiful place!
-
I was getting a little bit homesick, I stayed at the Inn for 3 weeks total but I was able to come home on Friday night and return on Sunday night though, but living out of a suitcase isn't much fun. My weekends were busy trying to get my and my husband's laundry done before either one of us had to go back out on the road. But I did enjoy the slow pace at the Inn. If I had stayed at a traditional hotel, I would have spent my evenings sitting in my room watching TV but at the Inn I would sit in the lobby every night with my quilting or crocheting and talk to the other guests who would have their books or playing checkers, dominos, scrabble. The owner saw me crocheting my snowflake Christmas ornaments last week and asked if I sold them and how much they were, I gave her a price and she put in an order for 2 dozen assorted snowflakes without glitter and one of the desk clerks also wanted 2 dozen snowflakes as well as 6 angels. I actually made money at the Inn.
Sheila
-
That's cool! I have a bunch of snowflake that I need to starch and flatten. I had them on my tree for years, but they became dingy so I washed them, but have yet to block them.
We are now expecting near 100 for today. I have no idea how to dress for the outdoor wedding. It will be hot in the afternoon, but I imaging the evening will be chilly. The venue is the same one my DS has chosen for his Novemebr wedding,so I want to see first hand how the place is used.
-
WNY is supposed to get 2-4 inches where I live east of buffalo, starting tonight and continuing tomorrow. We had summer for 2 weeks in March, then spring for a couple weeks, now back to winter I guess, I hope it is winter's last hurrah!!
-
I'm a wimp! Just turned on the air-we've had 3 days of 80s & my house is hot. There's no way I'll sleep tonight if I don't get it cooled down.
-
I just saw the weather for the Sylva area and today they are calling for snow showers! Here it is 43 this morning and only getting to 60 today. We are experiencing March weather in April!
Sheila
-
WTH - yup it's snowing just like they promised, only covering the ground so far but shows no sign of letting up. Schools to the southeast of Buffalo are closed. Big heavy flakes, just like the kind that took so many leaf laden trees and power lines down in that October storm a few years ago.
-
Two weeks ago a local ski resort got 30 inches of snow and we had over an inch of rain. Saturday it got up to 98 and yesterday 94. We went to the wedding Saturday and sweltered during the ceremony. One of the brindesmaids found shade beside the gazebo and sa there to watch the rest of the ceremony. The bride arrived in a horse-drawn carriage and afterward, while they were taking photos, the guests could take a ride around the lake in the carriage. The poor horse could only take 5 trips before she got too hot.
All in all it was a nice wedding, different, but nice. We used it as a reconnaisance trip for DS's wedding in 7 months. We know the owners of the place so we talked with them and got their feedback.
-
I love weddings, too. In this picture you can get the idea of the attention paid on the actual ceremony by the bride's attendants:
-
Fog??? Really? there was a slight breeze off and on yesterday and some wind last night, rain due tomorrow. What do you do for lunch when you head to Bakersfield?
