Doctor says radiation not indicated for me, only tamoxifen.  Unusual?

Did you have a Mastectomy? From My understanding it is either a mastectomy, or Lumpectomy with radiation. Mary

I had a lumpectomy for my .9 cm IDC, but also had a .5 cm ILC and some DCIS.  Dr. says latest research shows radiation is overtreatment and hormone therapy alone is effective.

I too have not heard of lumpectomy without radiation - except in some cases of a DCIS diagnosis - which you did not have.

I would recommend that you seek a second and possibly third opinion.

I had a BMX for one small 1.2 cm IDC.  I was told that rads depended on surgical margins when it comes to mastectomy.  My surgical margins were over .8 cm, so no rads.  Also, my nodes were clear so no chemo.

Just my humble opinion....but I would prefer to be over treated than under treated!  Get a second opinion, it may be the size and grade of the tumour as well as the margins.

Thanks to all for the feedback.  2nd opinion doc agreed - hormone therapy w/o radiation.  Margins were 1 cm or>,  tumor low-grade.  Both said that current research shows risk of recurrence in my case would improve by only 1% with radiation.  I'd like to know if others are hearing this from their docs.

I recently read a news article that said that radiation may no longer be recommended for certain patients with breast cancer. I think I read it in the NY Times or LA Times. I can't find it now but if you do a google news search you may find a source you trust. (or maybe there are studies in PubMed). I found this but I don't know this site

Some Older Breast Cancer Patients Could Skip Radiation

Glad to hear you got a second opinion and that they told you such a low expected risk of recurrence.
