    That's a good idea, Chabba.

Glad you avoided the twisters, Suz! We are supposed to have a cold weekend ahead.  Snow level is supposed to hit 3000 ft.  We are heading down to So Cal on Saturday and hope we can return over the Grapevine Sunday.  It would be a shame to have to call into work Monday because we couldn't get past the snow.Wink

Nancy, There is quite a science to the polination process.  How many hives are moved in and the timing.  One queen per hive and they have to artifically stimulate the hive so that it can actively produce honey and more bees during the short time they are polinating the orchards.  You will see buckets on top of the hives until the blossoms begin to open.  The bees are fed basically sugar water until time to go polinate.  We get the benefits of the bees in our garden because they don't know they are supposed to stay in the orchards.

My great-grandfather had honey bees. He had a flat roof on his garage with steps going to the roof and had his hives there. I remember walking on the roof with him while he worked the bees. He could handle the bees without a netted hat, he only used the smoker to control the bees. He would also put hives at various farms in the area if they wanted a hive there. He tried putting one at my uncle's farm but then they found out my uncle had a severe reaction to bee stings and had to take it back to grandpa's house. He would also feed the bees sugar water if the flowers hadn't opened yet but the bees were becoming active early.

    That's a neat memory, Sheila.

My grandfather raised and sold birds.  Canaries, parakeets, cockatiels, love birds, finch and many others.  He had the biggest "bird houses"!  We loved going there and helping him feed the birds.  He was such a rugged man and to see him so tender with little birds.

Yep, the temps are going to start dropping as of tomorrow.  Yesterday I never put my jacket on.  I wore a short sleeved shirt and sandals and was very comfortable.

Since the summit of the Grapevine is 4,000 ft, it is likely we will encounter snow on our way through Sunday, but they say only 1-3 inches.  I will suffer through it since it means we will be getting precipitation.  We have been so dry here!

yeah Nancy, and I live in the foothills where it is supposed to be cooler than the coast. This is the earliest we have gotten this warm, normally we don't get 80 until late April with the spring time pop-up thunderstorms. They are predicting near 80 again today and tomorrow with more thunderstorms both afternoons - crazy weather all around.

It's coming down the last few miles that gets me even in good weather.  We were in a 15 passenger van last year this time and the winds buffeted us so much!  I couldn't wait to get home.

The only time I came down the grapevine was back in '69 and I almost peed my pants.  A semi came roaring by me, air horn blaring when he lost his brakes.

Nancy today we had more rain showers, you could be in one location hear some thunder, the pavement is dry where you are at, have a few sprinkles hit the windshield and drive half a mile down the road and the pavement is totally wet. I had my driveway worked on this week, smoothed out with the tractor and 32 ton of gravel spread out. These are really the showers I need until I get the driveway packed down good. The light rain will help pack it down.  If we get too heavy rain storms (2-3 inches an hour) the new gravel will wash back out into the road, I paid too much for the work to wash away.

Actually they get more snow about 30 miles up the mtn at the ski resort area. I am at approx 1260 feet above sea level, Boone is at 3333 feet above sea level.  My county is divided into central Caldwell and Caldwell mtns when it comes to winter weather warnings. When the Caldwell mtns may get 6-8 inches we (Central Caldwell) may get 1-2 inches. My temp here is usually warmer year round than in Boone, if we want to get away from the hot temps in the summer we just travel up the mtn where it is 15-20 degrees cooler.

We'll be careful.  I always shut it down a lot when we haven't had rain for awhile.  I get passed right and left on the 99.

And the snow is to be just south of me.

Don't you know it.  There are a couple of turnabout areas where they can hit either direction.  It always make me wonder why they will close one of the two runoff ramps when it is empty.  I like knowing the trucks who've lost their brakes can leave the freeway.  You need to be aware that there are at least 3 CHPs who have unmarked cars, one pure white, a blue one and a gold one.

Our highway patrol has several unmarked cars in the area, mostly mustangs, not real flashy but fast. They can catch many speeders because they don't see them.

We do have the best of both winter and summer here. Some winters are colder and wetter than others. The summers are usually pretty hot and somtimes dry enough that we are put in drought conditions with water restrictions to conserve water if the resevoirs and rivers are too low. Where I live I am about 8 hours from the beach but 30 minutes from Grandfather Mountain.

You know, I can't rememebr if they have the logos or not, but the lights are in the back window and on the dash.  They probably have some logo on the door.  Its been awhile since I've seen one.

I used to travel up and down the grapevine everynight. One night as I was coing home it started snowing hard.  Traffic was stop and go and the only way I got through it was to follow a big truck's tire prints.  Found out they made a hard closure during the time I was getting out of it and there were stranded motorists all over the summit area.

I live a  couple hours from mountains and from ocean.

The wind started up with a vengence around 5 this morning.  Within minutes the rain started up.  If I were to rely on the sound of things, we're getting a lot of rain already.

The unmarked patrol cars I've seen in Washington had no marks at all.  Blue lights were hidden behind the grill and they had a flashing red light they could stick out the window and stick on the roof.  They only way you could tell they were patrol is by the SP on the license plate.

Well, the morning has already been an adventure.

Between 5 am and 8:15 we had already had 2.25" of rain.  That's a whole lot for us sunny Californians.  It doesn't look like it's giving up any time soon either.  So, we pull out of our driveway and head off.  DS calls and needs some meds which had been delivered to our house, so we return to get them.  Take them to him, and DH's phone rings.  I am certain it is his work letting him kno wsomething is flooded or such.  Nope, it is the alarm co, informing us they had dispatched the police because they had recieved a panic alarm from our house.  So, back to our house.  Second time in three days!  Thursday night DH and I were in bed and we saw lights in our backyard.  It was police who had recieved a panic alarm.

So, we cleared that up and got under way again.  It had been raining steadily the whole time.  When we got around Leval Rd, on the 5, we watched as a CHP with lights on came onto the Freeway and proceeded to spin out into the barrier fence on the right.  How embarrassing for him.  Then on the first uphill grade, there was one set of vehicles who had lost something over the edge and another set of three which had been involved in a fender ripper offer.  Traffic was at a standstill.

We are now nearing Ft. Tejon and there is hardly a car on the freeway.  The smart ones must have decided to stay home.  DH is being careful, and I am looking down at the computer so I don't back seat drive and irritate him.

Another truck spin out, and several flat tires on the side of the road, but we are throough the pass. Whew!

Meece-stay safe but the story about the cop is funny.  Years ago I was a 9-1-1 dispatcher & one of the rookies was patrol an outlying area.  To return to the station he hit I-5 up on the Siskiyou Summit. Coming down he decided to see how the runaway truck ramps work.  He buried the patrol up to it's doors in the gravel.  It was hilarious & I doubt he ever did anything so "hands on" again.

No it wasn't the rain.  There must be a glitch in our system. Thursday evening Dh and I were already in bed and we didn't hear the cops at our door.

No it isn't illegal to have an unmarked car pull you over, but we have been told, if you are not sure if it is a real police car to call 911 and give your location to see if it is a real one and tell the dispatcher you will pull over at a well lit parking lot and to relay it to the patrolman. We have had some 'blue light bandits' in this area and to follow those precautions.

Also, do not pull over in a remote location.  If you aren't sure, drive to a public place.

I went to bed last night and opened my window about 2 inches to let the cool air in. Woke up this morning chilly, temperature in the mid 50's and the weather map looks like showers heading this way and will get here about 8 am. Also calling for more thunderstorms coming through this afternoon and tomorrow. We are definately in the spring weather patterns of showers/storms almost daily.

We hit some snow on our way down into the valley.  Only a few miles of it, then we came out of it.  Snow was on the ground at lower elevations on this side of the ridge.  Once we got home we had some rain in spurts and even one episode of hail.  Crazy weather!!!

We are in March and had another record breaking temp. of 82 today.  We have broken the record of number of days with  record breaking temps.!!!!!!!!   Living outside of Buffalo N.Y. has never been this easy, I brushed my car off once, usually you just see a lump of white stuff on your car that takes you 15 minutes to uncover.  Everyone is smiling.
