After weeks of sharp sciatic pain, I think it might finally be over. Haven't taken any pain killers since early this morning. Still an ache when I bend down but SO much better - fingers crossed - don't want to jinx myself.

Hair is still looking really good - a nice big wave appearing which is what I used to have. It smelt really funny when I washed it this morning. I dried it off using the drier but didn't even have to use a brush. Everyone at work (even the men) said I look years younger too, so I've decided I'm only turning 50 this year instead of 60 :)

    Very Happy Susie

susieQ - what a relief - sciatic pain is horrible.  Do you do daily gentle stretching exercises for the lower back.  They really do help.

U.S. Identifies Army Sergeant in Killing of 16 in Afghanistan

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/17/world/asia/afghan-shooting-suspect-identified-as-army-staff-sgt-robert-bales.html?_r=1&hp

What a tragedy. I hope this serves to enhance understanding and knowledge of the social, political and psychological contexts in which war crimes are committed - and how, when war is waged, these factors can be identified before something awful happens. It seems that wars change with each generation, so the lessons learned from one may be hard to apply to the other.... It is a long road, for example, from the Crimea War to WWI to Vietnam to this.

    Happy St Patrick's Day!

Have a ham thawing out for dinner ... would make some green eggs to go with but DH is not the adventurous sort when it comes to his food.  The poor man would probably be horrified.  Honestly, he might laugh ... but he would not eat it.

We've broken high temp records here for several days.  So nice.  Grass was mowed yesterday and I'm getting the urge to go get plants and flowers.  Have to keep telling myself it's too early for that.

    Loved the 2cellos!

Susie ... glad your pain is easing!

(((hugs))) to Mary and 3monst and Ann and everybody else who is dealing with bad family health stuff right now.  Way too much of it ...

LOL at the IPhones ... all kinds of bad language on TV, Radio, Movies and nobody blinks an eye.  And then they come up with a friggin telephone that won't let you swear!  Some of the 'corrections' made by these things are comedy gold though so it's not all bad.

    Good Afternoon Ladies!

I've already run my errands and been to the pharmacy.  Also walked the dogs and picked up all the limbs that had blown down in the yard.  Getting ready to fire up the riding mower for the first time this season.  Everything is such a mess.

Susie .. Glad you're feeling better.

Athena .. I read another article about the soldier this morning and it reported that he did not want to go out on that fourth tour.  I think he knew he was about to crack.  The whole thing is so sad.  Reminds me of the Mi Lai tragedy.

Rabbit .. Those cellos were so cool!

Hope everyone is having a great day,

    Bren

I found a place on my iPhone so that when it wants to correct something, just press the x and it will let you spell however you want. Or turn off the autocorrect. On the other hand, some of the autocorrect errors are hilarious!

I'll call her again soon and let her know you asked about her.  I have her address if you want to send a card.

    hugs,

Just got my full posting privileges back. I can report posts again. Let me at 'em! It's funny though, I can't remember the last time I reported a post and that's what was taken away from me.

I miss Blue, too. I'm glad you talked to her Bren, and you're keeping us informed.

Bren please send Blue a hug from me too.

WR: I think you are right. :-)

So what is the situation with the iPhone? I have a different type of smartphone. Methinks smartphones and tablets are so over-publicized, overrated, etc... but I am sure that is not the popular view. They remind me of those all-in-one printers/faxes/copiers/scanners. They do everything except cook, but they don't do any SINGLE thing very well. My house phone is much more comfortable, my computer keyboard and computer screen are too, and touch screen technology is annoying. They are convenient and adequate, that is all.

You can't swear on an iPhone?

My cell phone doesn't even take pictures and I never turn it on - it's just there for my convenience. Much more comfortable with email and regular phones.

I did speak too soon, my sciatic pain is back but a wee bit less. Just popped a couple of pain pills so hopefully I'll get through the whole day without taking any more like yesterday. Shh - don't tell Steve - he's been cross at me for taking them. I have to be able to function....

My iPhone is almost more of a toy than a phone. In the last couple of days I used it to take a picture when I wouldn't otherwise have had a camera with me. The photos kept in it are fun for all sorts of reasons. On a trip anywhere, the e-book function saves on packing books. I use it  as an alarm clock. My grandson (8) uses it to play games. His 2 year old sister enjoys a game on it too - most useful for getting her to sit still when needed. When I direct a bridge game the calculator function becomes useful. My sister is hard of hearing and sends me texts - and unlike my previous cell phone this one has an easy to use texting function. The map function helps me get from A to B on a new journey. There are games on it that entertain me. I can even check BCO on it without  wifi. And sometimes it gets used as a phone.

My father will be 97 in a couple of weeks. He uses his iPhone as his primary phone now that he is in a long term care place. With it, he checks his e-mail (his primary contact with several of his grandchildren) and Facebook (to see photos of his latest great grand child) and he plays some card and word games on it. When he can remember his password he can check his banking on it too.

Yup, I think a smart phone is lots of fun. Even if no one ever phones me on it and my friends mock me for enjoying it so much!

Remember the old TVs with little screens?  Then we wanted the new ones ... bigger and bigger and bigger.  Now ... it's all the thing to watch TV and movies on your itty bitty phone screen!

Am I the only Star Trek fan who thinks of them flipping open their 'communicators' when I watch people with their cell phones ... and how about the 'Sounds of Silence' when people are texting.

I laughed and shook my head when Mr. otter got his iPhone 4s, but it turns out to be a lot of fun.

I really like his iPhone when we're traveling. As he drives, I use it, pretty much doing all the things Lassie mentioned.  I can check up on you guys here, or connect with my chemo buddies on FB; I can locate the nearest DQ for a quick lunch, or find a gas station with ethanol-free gas; I can find where the post office is located in any town we're in; we can listen to podcasts of Grammar Girl or Legal Lad (seriously); I can play favorite tunes through the truck radio (bluetooth?); .I can plot the fastest course to that night's motel; .. and then there are phone calls.  I still haven't figured out where the microphone is in the cab of the truck.

It is really going to peeve me if the feds mandate that any of those things must be blocked while the vehicle is underway.  I understand about not texting and driving.  Honestly, I can't even figure out how people do that... or read a map while driving, or put makeup on, or any of the number of distracting things people do as they drive.  For some drivers, that list could include talking on a cell phone (hands-free or not), arguing with a spouse in the passenger seat, disciplining children in the back seat, restraining a dog that's trying to climb out the window, ... or even just seeing around a dog that's sitting in the front seat with its head hanging out the window!

...but, you really can't legislate stupid, can you? Some people are just poor drivers.  They would be inattentive if they had nothing else to do but drive.

As for the tech blocking:  What if it's the kids in the back seat, or the passenger in the front seat, using the smart phone or the GPS?  Would data entry etc. still be disabled when the car is moving?   I am sorry, but that sux.

I am not tech-savy.  I have a dumb phone that Mr. otter didn't want anymore once he got his iPhone.  My old cell phone couldn't even do voicemail, much less texting.  So, I am making progress.

Yesterday, the Fed Ex guy delivered Mr. otter's new iPad.  He's been playing with it ever since. <sigh>  (Just as well, since we both came down with the flu this past week and we don't feel like going anywhere.)

    Good Morning Everyone!

What are you guys up to today?  I need to do some cleaning before Tim gets home tomorrow.  I always put it off until the last possible moment.

Rabbit .. I fired up the riding mower yesterday.  Had to check the oil and put air in the tires ... and away I went.  OMG .. my lawns look like a park today.  I can't believe how green the grass is this early in the spring.

Riley .. That link was funny.  I don't have a smart phone .. I can barely figure out the cell phone I do have.  I don't use it for anything except phone calls.

Otter .. My sis and her hubby have smart phones and they have so much fun with them.  I can't even see the screen without having to look for my reading glasses.  I envy people who are tech savvy.

Hope everyone has a really nice day,

    hugs,

    Bren

Ah Bren - you don't have to be very tech savvy to use a smart phone because the phone does most of it for you. If you can use a computer, and you can, you can use a smart phone. I couldn't figure out how to text on my old cell phone and it's right there easy as pie on the smart phone. As I have mentioned, my two year old granddaughter can use some features on the smart phone. She also can remover apps that we didn't want removed.

    Well, I have a screwed-up tech story for y'all...

I mentioned upstream that Mr. otter got a brand-new iPad on Friday.  He ordered it from the Apple store.  (Personally, I'd rather have had some fresh apples this time of year... but, whatever.)   He activated the new data account, charging it to our main credit card; and set things aside while stuff downloaded.

Later that day, he was trying to buy some groceries when the credit card got rejected.  Turns out, our credit card company put a block on the card when they saw the charge for the new Verizon data account.  They thought it might be fraudulent.

We already have two Verizon cell phone accounts and a Verizon MiFi (wifi) wireless data account.  So, what now?  You can't have more than 3 wireless/data devices per household, without raising suspicion?   This is a very active card that we use every day.  We've had for 15 or 20 years and only once has there been a fraudulent charge.  (We gave it to a waiter to pay for lunch in El Paso, and ended up with a charge for 4 new truck tires bought in Ciudad Juarez. I'd LOL if it were funny.)

Mr. otter got the credit-card problem resolved right away, and continued trying to activate the account for his new iPad... but nothing happened.  He tried off-and-on all day, but finally gave up around 10 o'clock last night and cancelled the activation.  Actually, he had to "de-activate" the account because it was partially activated and then got stuck somewhere along the line.

Today, he got an error message:  "Unable to activate; SIM card not valid."  Oops.  He called Verizon; and after 3 tries, finally got through to someone who explained apologetically that he was going to have to take the iPad to a Verizon store to get a new SIM card. By attempting to activate, and then "de-activating", the account last night, he had effectively cancelled the SIM card that had come with the iPad.  Or, something like that.  The Verizon person really didn't have a clue; and the wait time on the tech services line was hours long so Mr. otter hung up.

I feel bad for him.  He was so tickled when the Fed Ex guy showed up with the iPad -- like a little kid with a new toy.  One place he wants to use it is on our boat, if we ever get our boat back from the repair yard -- it will have been a year next month since the tornado hit and it's still not done.

Anyway, ... Bren, I'm glad your grass looks nice.  Our lawn was designed to be low-maintenance (centipede), so we won't be mowing for a few weeks yet, if then.  The redbuds are in full bloom, though; and the dogwoods are even starting to pop out.  Things are even farther along in town (as usual).

NO SNOW.  No.  Not here.  No thanks.

    otter
