Suzanne Somers statement on the Rosie Show
Comments

I read one of her books just to see what all the fuss was about. I thought she had an interesting point of view until she described her daily routine; which included rubbing hormone lotion on the inside of her upper arm, estrogen daily and progesterone two weeks a month, injections of estriol vaginally, and 60 pills daily, 40 in the morning and 20 at night. Then I realized that she was totally nuts!!! What disturbs me is the potential fate of women who jump on the 'Suzanne Somers Is My Oncologist' bandwagon.

Coolbreeze..... you took the words right out of my mouth!!!! I am looking for that link now. I for one LOVE your blog and would love to read your thoughts further!
I am also frankly stunned that Rosie O'Donnell, who lost her mom to breast cancer, actually gave her that platform. Rosie knows as well as you and I that mammograms don't make cancer spread..... for goodness sake, if I was Rosie, I might have punched her!!
-
Remind me to never wear orange lipstick. Ick. Also, I will not eat a jelly donut ever again.
-
coolbreeze - it looks like she is quoting Robert Blaylock from her Knockout book on the subject of exploding of tumors by mammography. Here is the quote:
"We were taught in medical school if a person has a tumor - say, a woman with a lump in her breast - you shouldn't feel that lump except when you initially examine it, because every time they squash it, the cells are pushed out into the lymphatic system and also the blood vessels, and you are more likely to cause metastases. So yes, there is a real concern about this, but they never tell this to women. And women don't know what the doctors are saying among themselves."

After I watched the clip I just shook my head, it is sad that people buy into this.
-
The authority in which Ms. Somers speaks about breast cancer is truly frightening, especially considering her background is in TV comedy. I don't care how much "research" she does, she's a dangerous lady whose medical input is best ignored.
-
I just wonder why she preaches about all of the bad things you should not put into your body and then botox's herself so much that she looks like an egg?
-
Like I said earlier, I think she is truly delusional.
-
I have long been a bit confused I over the use of hormones, bio identical or otherwise a other supplements to stave off the aging process. I understand using food, exercise, etc. to keep yourself feeling as strong and healthy as possible when you age, but isn't aging a natural process? Why would we want to trick our bodies ? Isn't that unnatural ?

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing x )

I find it interesting that in the clip, she quotes a "brain surgeon" who went to "oncology school". Oh, and the CTC test is little known and "holistic". Alrighty then you wackadoo..........
I was talking to the onc NP from the hospital Ihad my chemo at locally, who happens to also be a mom in my son's classroom, tonight, and I told her about this and sent her the link. She called me back about two minutes later and told me she nearlly choked on her dinner when Suzanne said that "tumors get squished and then they metastisize". She also said "oncology school" is referred to as medical school, and in her very long history in cancer care, brain surgeons do not mess with breast cancer and breast surgeons do not mess with brain cancer. This woman went to harvard undergrad, NYU for nursing school, interned at MSKCC in NYC and worked as an oncology and research nurse at dana farber for 11 years before she moved here to get out of the city.
Oh, and she said anyone that would take medical advice from Chrissy Snow from Three's Company probably owns a facemaster, and a thighmaster, and is as crazy as she is.........ROFLMAO!!!!
-
I just watched the clip. I needed a good laugh after my rant.
Misswim, love your post..advice from Chrissy Snow..now I'm ROFLMAO. -
I'll tell you what's out of control. The fact that the media books her! If those bookers had brains...which they don't because all they care about is ratings...and their jobs...then they would think twice about who they are putting on their shows. Likewise, I wonder how much control the show's star has in choosing whom they want to interview. It's always about "the get."
That's pretty much the reason why I stick to reading books....I'm appalled at what media has evolved into...
And you folks are going to laugh when I tell you the only show that I don't mind watching...and that's Wendy Williams. She doesn't interview "know it alls." And when she does interview or talk about people, she's refreshing to listen to because she is usually spot on and says things in a respectful manner. She's one classy woman!

Theories about "seeding" tumors after biopsies have long been around. Now here's another view that will cloud the issue and scare women from getting regular mammograms.
Let's face it, there MIGHT be some basis for this, but she's carried it a little too far into mainstream medical care. Regular mammograms will detect more cancers in situ and at other early invasive stages and save lives than burst a tumor (if that's even possible!).
She'a an alarmist.
-
All thoses tests she recommends as an alternative - well.... she can afford to pay for such things and not have to go through insurance.... When I was younger and kept finding lumps I asked once why I kept having these mamograms when I immediately had to have them looked at by ultrasound. Why not go straight to ultrasound? It was all the way it needed to be done for insurance. But you know if mamograms did make tumors squash then ALL of us would have invasive cancer. Makes no sense...
-
She clearly is a nutter, no tumor can be burst this way or any way,it is not a pimple. I do not believe she ever had cancer of any kind, she contradicts herself constantly.
"Cancer all over my body" " Herbs cured me" My breasts will grow with cells I am getting" "I had a lumpectomy"" I am not sure what kind of cancer was ", etc, etc.
She is a failure that for being greedy lost a TV program. She wants all the attention possible and what better way that to say stupid comments.
-
I laugh at the "oncology school"
Graduated medical doctors , have to work and study 3 to 4 years as fellows in a particular cancer speciality in a Cancer teaching center.
An few are accepted to fill the 2 or 4 openings for a specific speciality.
Sommers is dumb.
I am glad I do not watch any of this programs.
-
First, I have never been a fan of Ms. Sommers but I must admit what she said about Mammos squashing the tumors (if one is in the breast) has always been one of my greatest concerns and fears. I have never read anything about it happening so I just push the fear away when I go for my annual "squash and squeeze".
If Ms. Sommers is ER+ (unless I misread the post) how can she be taking all that estrogen?? That part really amazes me since she gives so much info to the public about bc.
-
Does Ms Summers realize that undiagnosed and untreated breast cancer kills people? If performing mammograms caused increased metasteses, survival rates would be highest in countries without health care. This is not the case. I find having breast cancer terrifying. Why give someone like her a platform. I guess her funny looks and crazy ideas make for good tv.

Beesie just caught the dounut image. Too funny
-
barbe
that's one really terrifying picture.....
BUT, if her imagination comes up with these ideas - maybe we should share some of whatever she's "smokin" on the Creative thread??????
-
Ms. Somers, who, after receiving surgery and radiation for her breast cancer in 2001, declined chemotherapy in favor of a drug made from mistletoe extract. She did conventional treatment, then went with the other stuff.
This kind of crap is just straight up dangerous. If I had thought the lump could actually pop inside my breast, I don't know if I would ever have had a mammo. Maybe she was confused and thinking of a cyst, or clogged duct? I would think something like that could maybe pop if squished hard enough?.
-
They shouldn't allow her to say crap like that --- I know, freedom of speech and all that, but really?? How many women are going to be terrified by this information??
I remember being told that biopsies "anger" the cancer and cause it to go into a rapid growth period.
Perhaps they accidentally mammogrammed her brain.
-
Oh hell... I'm SO angry at her, can't even laugh...
-
Misswim ... looking for the "like" button!
This woman is dangerous and she's playing with fire.

Someone sent me her book within a week of me being diagnosed. I tried to read it and oh gosh it was just so full of rhetoric I thought I was gonna scream. When I got to that quote from the doctor about mammograms spreading cancer, I thought I was gonna lose it. Yeah, lets all skip our mammo's and wait until the cancer gets big enough to feel or see. Sounds like a smart plan to me. It is such a disgrace that she is given the press coverage to spread complete misinformation.
-
dance - the only reason I could look up that quote was because some misguided friend of my DH sent it to us, along with an email about asparagus. I just started laughing...
-
She's crazy. Pure and simple.
-
If you're supposed to do 'natural' TX - then isn't that what those of us who did Taxol or Taxotere did? Taxol comes from the bark of Yew trees in the Pacific Northwest and Taxotere comes from the berries of the Europeon Yew. So isn't that 'natural'?
-
SpecialK...ba-ha-ha-ha! Gotta love it. It was very hard to know how to respond when my friend asked me if I'd read the books yet. I know he loves me, so I really try to avoid discussing our conflicting viewpoints!
-
Hi all,
Just for your information, this is our official stance on this subject:
"As you may suspect, there is absolutely no evidence for these claims. In fact, not getting a mammogram or not exerting enough compression during a mammogram will increase the risk of a delayed diagnosis, resulting in a higher risk of metastatic disease. "
We will be editing our Myths page to reflect this as well. Thanks for bringing this to our attention!
