I just had time to glance at the Washington Post but there is an article by Courtland Milloy and in it he mentions breast cancer and I am a bit peeved by what he wrote. Wondering if he writes facts or opinions?
-
Link?

Ang .. is this the article? He has a line on the first page mentioning something to the effect that breast cancer is rarely fatal to white women. What a putz.
Back from my errands ... and my allergies are kicking my ass today. The Bradford pears are in full bloom .. and they're beautiful, but killing me.

"and breast cancer is no longer the death sentence for her that it is for so many others." -
I looked up that column because of your mention, Ang, and registered and commented (twice, because I didn't think the first one went through). Annoyed me, too -- not least because (as I said in my comment) I usually support discussion of "white privilege" and racism in the U.S. -- but this column sure seemed pointless and ill-informed. (And I do think he only writes opinion columns.)
-
I posted, too. What a complete and utter asshat!
-
Yeah, Courtland Milloy is an opinion columnist. Usually I agree with him, but he missed the point completely on this one. Disturbingly so.
-
Opinions should be based on facts. Hell, I could pull "opinions" out of my butt and post them all over the media, much like SP does. Doesn't make me a journalist, though.
-
You all are cool. No wonder I like reading this thread. My DH did not see much wrong with this article?
-
Ang ... I think it's because DH's have penis'.
-
An Ohio woman Senator fights back:Well, my links never, ever, ever work, but this is really interesting! Of course it doesn't have a snowball's chance in h*ll of passing, but at least it's a jolly good effort. And one that every "angry white woman" and women of any colour would surely approve!
-
I'll let Bren's comment of "putz" stand - cuz if I wrote what I think, this thread would get banned.
Yes, it is ACCURATE that African American women often do suffer from a more aggressive form that the "average" Caucasian woman - but REALLY!!!!! What a waste this kind of drivel is - the WashPost is slipping - badly. At least this "OPINION" is in the LOCAL section in hard copy.
Thanks for the heads up - will comment.
-
I think the wife should have to approve Viagra too ... maybe she doesn't want to have sex with him anyway so there is no reason he needs it. And it's not moral for him to be messing around elsewhere. So ... it's for his own good to protect his spiritual and physical health ... have you heard the list of side effects from that stuff!
Ang7 ... good to see you again! I haven't read the other article yet. But from comments here I'm thinking that joker needs to be sent a list ... or pictures ... of our friends that we have lost to breast cancer. Another misconception fed by all the pinkwashing IMO.
Stopped raining here so am on my way out the door to 'do stuff'. Have a good Monday!
-
Rabbit wrote, "Another misconception fed by all the pinkwashing IMO."
I agree 100%. All this "pink" does more harm than good. I'm not against the pink ribbon for breast cancer, I even wear my pink pin sometimes ... but at least get the facts out there with all the "misconception."
Looks like your rain might be moving in here. I've got a few windows open, it's that nice out ... but it's clouding up. I am so anxious for spring to get here.
hugs to all,
Bren

Pouring down rain here in the Seattle area, and it's supposed to do so for the next 5 days or so. Yuck.
As far as not being here much, I'm on posting restriction because I had a post reported on the "Paps and Mammos" thread. I did what I know I'm not supposed to do, and gets me in trouble everytime-I called out another poster by name. So I'm grounded for a bit and will mostly just be lurking until I get my full privileges back.
I love that Ohio congresswoman and her Viagra legislations. What's good for the goose must also be good for the gander.

I am in LOVE with this State Senator.

I am shocked by the massacre committed by the American soldier....not liking how our press is reporting it either. We should express simple shock. That's what happens when war goes on too long. You get the sociopaths unleashed - or people who were not born evil but became that way through war. What you don't want is a country having to do diplomatic dances as a result of that evil.
I feel a bit as I did after the Abu Grahib TORTURE scandal broke.
Will look at the post article. Lots of things to be outraged about today (including my retarded supervisor).
Not liking this weather either.

A G & T cures most ills. :-)
-
Sunflowers .. thanks for posting the article. It gave me a chuckle.
Athena .. it's time for the U.S. to be out of Afghanistan.
Mary .. I'm sorry you're grounded. It's such a hassle to get your account back up after you've been deleted by the community of clowns.
hugs,
Bren

Just started the Post piece - and stopped after the first few paragraphs. Ignorance and prejudice are alive and well, it seems.
-
It was a rather nauseating way to start my breakfast...
better to eat first before reading the Post.
-
Mary - sorry about your being reported - Bren has the correct definition.
-
The Post article pissed me off big time - my sister was white (she died from BC at the age of 60 and hers was an agressive type) - I don't understand any MAN writing about BC unless he has it himself and I think we could all do without any kind of racism thank you very much - isn't it interesting how it's always MEN taking part in the women's health issues - too bad they can't find anything else to mess with like jobs, war, the economy, violence against women, drugs, gangs - can you tell my bp is higher than a kite?
As for the soldier in Afganistan - the movie "In the Valley of Elan" was on TV Saturday afternoon and it certainly is an eye opener about the returning veterans and their mental health issues - it may be an insight into what happened.
-
I haven't read Doonesbury in a long time but he's about to tickle my funny bone again. He's been cartooning 41 years, now I feel a bit old.
-
Chick -- good thing folks can read Doonesbury on-line; I understand some papers are refusing to carry the strip this week <sigh>, probably mostly in your neck of the woods......
-
I live near Austin, thankfully more open minded Texans around here. If you don't count the state legislators. Ugh.
-
The Seattle Times has moved the Doonesbury strip from the comics page to the world news section. I think it's going to be a good run if yesterday's strip was any indication.
Mary
-
Just read today's Doonesbury. Yep, it's going to be a good run with this storyline.

I finally read that Post article. Whew ... that one line about breast cancer was pure cluelessness. The rest of it was fractured thinking with a side order of erroneous assumptions IMO.
That soldier had already been through 3 tours in Iraq and a brain injury. The military is pushing people way too far. I cringe when I hear some say we should jump right into Iran and Syria too as though we have the manpower and resources to just go over there and kick butt.
A good look at the members of our state legislature is scary too. Lots of dim bulbs ... and the dimmer they are the louder and pushier they are.
Going to have to try out a new vet's office next month when the dog is due for her shots. The practice I loved was sold and the new owners are so friggin disorganized. 4 phone calls and 2 visits just to get a refill for a cat's thyroid meds. Their office staff are always very nice ... yes they will get it (half the time they actually do) ... call you when it's ready (never) ... and then give you the wrong amount hoping you don't notice I guess because they don't even mention it until you ask why. Final straw yesterday was when I got a 'we think she needs her annual blood test after this refill' ... she's not due until 8-27-2012. Their records must be a total mess because they don't have a clue. So the nice girl says she'll fix the records so we don't get a hassle with next refill ... but she won't and we will. I don't have the patience for this stuff anymore.
Waving hi to all ...
-
Doonesbury always nails it. That's why so many try to censor it.
-
I don't believe that anyone is trying to "censor" Doonesbury. The strip frequently covers topics that are not appropriate fare for the comic page. The editorial page is a much more appropriate venue for that content.
A few newspapers have chosen not to carry the strip this week, so they are publishing an alternate story arc. That is a business decision by those newspapers who don't wish to offend any of their readers, similar to some advertisers asking that their ads not run during controversial programing. I believe that this group was cheering such a move recently.
Censorship would be if someone was preventing the strip from being published at all.
