Double mastectomy stage I BRCA-
Has anyone asked for a double mastectomy with DCIS and a small multifocal/unifocal invasion-and been turned down? I was 49 at dx and 2 surgeons said NO to a double mastectomy-no need, to invasive, more risk than good. I went for a 2nd opinion now that I am 52 cuz I still want it. At first this new surgeon said yes we would talk more about it at the next appt. She wanted to give me time to think about it. So than she got pregnant and my appt was scheduled even further out. I just went to see her and now she says the same thing. No-the risks outweigh the benefits. My mom had cancer and my grandma. My sister has dense breasts and has to get checked all the time. I am so mad that because they haven't found the gene linking us I'm considered low risk for reoccurance. They know there is a link to colon and ovarian cancer and now my cousins in their 50's have been dx with these types of cancers. What more proof do I need. If I get it in my other breast I will sue.

No. All of my drs supported my decision. Keep looking until you find a dr who doesn't have a God complex. Your body. Your decision.

I had DCIS w 1 mm IDC and got a UMX...and have recently decided to do a prophy on the other breast. My MO is not opposed to it My PS thinks its a good idea and while my BS doesn't seem to think its a great idea is doing it anyhow. And Ihave none of your extra risk factors. I am not sure why you are getting so much pushback on this-it doesn't make sense. Are you otherwise unhealthy and would have difficulty in a surgery? I would say keep trying to find someone.

I had BMX for one tumor DCIS/IDC on the left. No hesitation what so ever by my breast surgeon or plastic surgeon. Their only disagreement was whether I should have simultaneous reconstruction due to risk of chemo/rads. Because I decided to have the recon started with the BMX, I changed BS. But all supported my BMX decision.
Plenty of women have BMX for prophylactic purposes. You have a family history and a diagnosis. If that is your choice, no respectable BS should turn you down. See another.

I know doesn't it seem crazy? I am not in the best of shape but healthy enough to have a mastectomy ... no high bp, lipids, cad, etc.... My breast that I have left hurts really bad just to touch it. She said "we don't remove breasts for pain." I've had cancer don't forget...I will not wear my fake foob. It is uncomfortable. I already have neck osteoarthritis and will probably end up with more neck issues because I'm carrying an uneven load. I am so disappointed.Maybe if I can show her studies / data to support having it done.
