Hi Debbie! I live by Malone also...38th and Market. I have my chemo (TCH) at Aultman and will be done with that 3/22. Congrats on finishing yours! How is rads treating you? I am finding the fatigue is the worst too. I've been bald for 2 months now and am getting really sick of it. Is your hair growing back at all?
I'm so glad to see another Canton girl here!

Hi Debbie!
Just wanted to say HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND to all my fellow Buckeyes. We might get snow...
How weird has this winter been?
I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop.....probably get a blizzard next month...
I hope to make some progress on my quilt this weekend.....was side tracked with my 9 year old's birthday celebration which somehow lasted THREE WHOLE DAYS!!
That kid likes to party. buwhahaha
-
Tonya, better get used to it....3 days is nothing! My stepdaughter thinks the celebration should start at least 3 months early....at least that's when she starts reminding us EVERY day that her birthday is coming up!
I am looking forward to some snow...this winter has definitely sucked! It's been grey and depressing, at least snow makes it brighter. I would actually like to put my vote in to just get spring going....can't wait to get back outside!
Have a great weekend ladies!
-
Getting ready to batten down the hatches here. Expecting 60 MPH winds. Good thing I don't have to worry about my hair getting messed up =;0)
-
Hi girls!
Kelloggs ... you must live over in Market Heights? Nice area. I live in the little neighborhood tucked behind the new fire station on 25th & Cleveland Avenue. We call it "Fringewood" - all the ambiance of Ridgewood but without the higher taxes, LOL!
Radiation is going OK ... I am very, very tired, and not sleeping very well even with the sleeping pills the doc finally gave me. I can get to sleep with the pill, but I always wake up between 2-3:00a and cannot get back to sleep. I am just dragging, sometimes I feel like I am sleepwalking at work.
My skin was in great shape until this week, and now I am starting to get a little rash on my chest and my armpit is tanned. The rash itched and I forgot NOT to scratch it - D'OH! So I am putting a little cortisone cream on it and it is getting better. I have no redness, blisters, burning or anything like that. I use my Mary Kay face products on my boob. It is working beautifully.
Re hair ... it started coming back in about 7 weeks after chemo (they predict 6 weeks). I have about 1/4 inch of fine fuzz all over. I have decided it will be whatever color it comes back in, no more coloring my hair (I am 54). About the same time the hair started coming back in, the rest of my eyebrows and eyelashes fell out. I have no bottom lashes, no eyebrows, and about 5 upper lashes on each eye. I wear glasses so it is not super obvious, but when I look in the mirror with my makeup off, I feel like my face is bald. Bleh. I had nice eyelashes ... I would really like to have them back, thank you very much! I usually wear a wig to work, and around the house I wear a 'do rag, or these soft caps I got from TLC. Nothing glamorous but they are comfy and they keep my head warm.
BTW I have 2 sons ... one is 25 and in the Navy, stationed in Japan. My youngest is a freshman at Ohio State in Columbus ... a music major. He is home this weekend, yay!
Very windy today, lost power 3 times at the office. I would gladly skip snow and go right to spring. My tulips are up, silly girls!
Take care everyone ... enjoy the weekend.
Debbie
-
Debbie - yes, I live in Market Heigts but in a "Fringewood" type house we rent. All the prestige of the neighborhood but I don't have to pay the taxes! Do you mind me asking where you work?
The wind has been hella strong today. I drive a Jeep Wrangler and was being tossed all over the road! The thing is shaped like a box and has windows that act as mini parachutes! I hope I don't get blown away to Oz on the way home. Batten down the hatches ladies and hang on!
-
Oh BTW Debbie - I am already fatigued from chemo, can't wait to add rads fatigue to it...NOT
-
HI Debbie and hello to everyone today-----pretty windy down here in central ohio too---have heard there are a few power outages around our area but so far no problem here. I actually got the grill out on Wed. ------Dont think I have ever done that in Feb before.
I have a niece that just visited Malone College on Monday. I think she liked it but she lives down near Dayton and isnt sure she wants to be 4 hours away from home. Debbie, has your son enjoyed his first year at Ohio Stat?. My daughter has been accepted there but she is trying to decide between 3 Universities. Her high school here is pretty small and she has it in her mind that she wants to go to a big school. We visited Ohio State a couple weeks ago----had a good tour and our student guide told us that despite its size, he doesnt feel like just a number there. I felt better about it after that trip. I have a stack of scholarship books from the library and have to keep bugging her to keep applying for any scholarship she could possibly qualify for. Tonlee-----sometimes I wish my daughter was still 9!!! She was my youngest and I just didnt want her to grow up too fast.
Kelly are you going to go straight to rads right after your chemo? My order was chemo, surgery, then rads. At least that gave me some time to build up a little strength. I had to go out to the medical side of town today. Whenever I get close to the Radiation Oncology office I almost turn automatically in there. It seems like such a long time, 5 days a week for 6 weeks but I have to say it went by pretty quickly.
Debbie, I hope that you get a better nights sleep tonight. I think that between 2 and 3 am must be the 'chemo' hour, I used to wake up around that time too. Never realized how loud the clocks in my kitchen and living room were. Watched a few too many infomercials and old movies during that time.
Wishing you all a nice weekend. Be strong. You are all in my prayers. judy

we lost power during the nite for about 2.5 hours and at the grocery today the lights flickered...i did not wash my hair this morning-afraid to! and it blew everywhere while i was out-so far none of it is shedding tho-today is day 12
i'm in a mood to cook - think i'll make a big pan of veggie lasagna with white sauce- hope it will freeze well after we eat at least one nite off it!
had my appt with new PCP today to get established. he prescribed very low dosage of anti depressant thinking it wouldn't hurt! i'm game.
went to NIA at my cancer ctr-wow- for someone who does not exercise anymore it felt great! however; it reinforced how uncoordinated i am-ie left foot in means left arm up not right arm!!hahaha! class is every two weeks so i'll go again.
trying to enjoy my weekend before tx#2 on monday-
i vote for spring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Rads wiped me out starting the 3rd week. But there was a bonus to it. Since our bodies are really pumping to replace damaged cells, I could eat just about anything I wanted....in fact, I don't think I've ever been as hungry as I was on rads. Starving all the time. I had rads to the super clav, the axilla, whole breast, and skin (with bolus).
Bolus sucks.
My RO said I had the most rads a woman with BC can get first time round! lol I felt every minute of it. I burned under my arm with the last 4 boosts because of the bolus, but until that...I was good. I used Aloe immediately after rads...a few hours later used Emu oil, and then slathered on Aquaphor at night. Dawn dish washing liquid takes the oil/aquaphor stains out...I just filled a bucket with water and Dawn, dropped my night clothes in it and let it sit at least over night. Then washed as normal. Nothing ruined including the sports bras I wore to bed.
PS says my skin help up really well. (They were anticipating it wouldn't. Though we'll see how it does under the scalpel this summer.)
I am so ready for spring. I'm a big landscape enthusiast...love doing it, digging in dirt, hauling mulch..all of it. (Mostly because it helps get me in shape for bathing suit season!)
SLEEPING. I don't know if anyone here has tried it, but I take Magnesium Citrate (important for it to be CITRATE..I buy it at Vitamin World in 100mg capsules for like $5). Anyway, I take 300mg a night at bed time and it helps me sleep. It also helps eliminate migraines if anyone has those. And probably the best thing about it is...it keeps you every day regular. Love that.
My Onc said 300mg is the FDA recommended upper daily allowance, but it is safe to take up to 500mg at my height/weight (5'4" 115). It is something our bodies need and has heart benefits as well. I've taken it every day for almost a year and I feel great! And especially love the non-bloated belly! lol
-
Saturday morning ... what's all that white stuff? WHICH ONE OF YOU WISHED FOR SNOW???
Kelly - I work at MobilityWorks in Akron ...we build and sell adaptive vehicles (wheelchair vans).
Judy - I slept very well last night. I was exhausted when I got home from work & after rads yesterday. Dozed off & on watching TV last night. Went to bed at 10, and took a sleeping pill AND a xanax. That must be the magic combination because I slept soundly until 8a. I think we might go up to the auto show today or tomorrow.
Max LOVES Ohio State. He is a music major. Even tho OSU has about 60,000 students, the music school has about 500 so he is really in one of the small schools. We visited Youngstown State, Bowling Green and OSU when we were shopping music schools for him last year - and we were all immediately drawn to OSU, we just felt he belonged there. And after all the visits, the audition process, orientation, tours, etc. - i came away with the feeling that if you fail at OSU, you CHOOSE to fail - because their support systems are really strong. (BTW he is a percussionist, in the jazz percussion program - but he plays guitar, bass, keyboards, sings, writes his own music, etc.) First semester this year he had all A's and 1 B.
We are a musical family. My oldest (in the Navy) plays bass, my husband plays guitar. He and I sing together. We play at open mics all over Canton, sometimes opening for friends' bands. Two girlfriends and myself also sing as a trio, the name of our group is BroadBand (get it? "Broad" band? LOL!) It is the fun thing my DH and I do together to combat empty nest syndrome! I have not been out much lately due to my piss-poor energy level, but I make him go to maintain his sanity.
I was fortunate to be able to have a housekeeper come every other week during chemo so I did not stress over dirty bathrooms. That was nice. And I also mostly worked at home ... I have the kind of job (sales) where I could do that. I did not go to the office much during chemo as it is a PETRI DISH (every sick person feels they MUST come to work and infect everyone else) and my immune system was so weak I ended up in the hospital twice during chemo ... so I mostly stayed away from the office. I do not ever want to be that weak again.
I am a gardener too! But end of season last year I was unable to work, so I am going to have to work my ass off this spring to get things looking good. I am a working mule in my yards and last fall I felt so bad giving my DH the list of things that needed cut back, dug up, etc. Some things did not get done. I have a good girlfriend, also a gardener, who will come help me this spring. It will be fun. We will work shoulder to shoulder, have a good visit, and make things look good again. I am a friendship gardener, sharing plants, and so is she. She has lots of plants I do not have, and is always looking to split plants, so I know this spring I will probably get to cut in new beds for new plants. YAY!!!!!! Something to look forward to besides CANCER.
Gotta go get about this bright snowy day. I am so happy to have found this thread, thanks for starting it! I feel closer to you all knowing I could almost reach out and touch you. Everybody think POSITIVE THOUGHTS this weekend, and do something that makes you smile.
Love, Debbie
-
Well Debbie, I have to admit I ordered the snow! I am just so tired of the dreary grey weather! I am sitting in my kitchen looking out the window. There are aout 20 birds, cardinals and blue jays mostly, playing and gathering at our feeder. My cat is loving it too as she watches from her perch in the window. The snow always seems to bring the birds out here!
I hope everyone has a wonderful relaxing weekend!
-
If you have cardinals and blue jays at your feeders, the snow makes a wonderful backdrop - and it entertains the cat, which then entertains you! Enjoy!
-
Debbie------sounds like you have an amazing son. Thats great that he is doing well in college. My daughter is excited to start that part of her life----just so many tough decisions to make. I hope that she is as happy with her college choice as your son has been.
Sounds like yours is a busy family. You must have a lot of fun in the bands. What kind of music do you perform?
Looking forward to spring and a bit of gardening too. You sound so enthusiastic about digging those new beds---that is my least favorite part of the process---the soil down this way is clay and rocks, and I think the rocks reproduce over the winter because I can't tell you how many buckets of rocks I have filled up over the years out of the existing beds. I'm always dreaming about what I'd like to do, have the whole yard landscaped in my mind! Do you have many deer up your way? They are taking over down here in many parts of our county.
Have a good week--------and that goes for everyone------judy
-
Jaytee,
Laughing about the deer. We spend the last 20 years living in the country and moved to Parma 7 months ago. Looked out my back window and saw 5 doe grazing in my yard. Guess if I want a garden I'll be putting up a BIG fence!!
-
Good morning ladies!
Sewingnut and Jaytee - I know what you mean....we live in the city limits but have a small area of woods behind our house. We have 7 deer living back there, skunks, raccoons, squirrels, chipmunks, tons of birds and last week we saw a coyote! Feels like we live in the country and I love it! I can't wait to get outside and work in the yard.
Debbie - It's great you are a musical family. My husband plays drums (UGH!) and I play piano. There is always music playing in our house, usually loudly!
-
Good morning everyone----------Sounds like we don't have backyards anymore, but mini nature preserves. I think the deer much prefer landscape material to their natural foods out in the wild. The does all seem to have twins and triplets too, so impatiens and hostas must work like a fertility drug to them! I have noticed that the deer resistant plant lists are getting smaller and smaller.
We were having a problem with chipmunks. There were 2 that I would often see on the deck, had them named and everything. DH noticed that the concrete pad beneath the air conditoner unit was shifting---they were digging tunnels under there. He finally had to trap them and ended up with almost 10! I have to keep my bird feeders farther out in the yard now. Sure did like to watch the birds up close though.
kelly, I think that sounds so nice to fill your house with music! I love music, but I seemed to be somewhat of a musical dyslexic when it came to learning how to read it and play.. If I could play any instrument, I would love to play the fiddle. Just love Irish music and would love to learn to play a little jig or reel. Have any of you up in the Cleveland/Akron area ever had a chance to see the band called Brigid's Cross? I know they are from the Cleveland area and we always see them at the Dublin Irish festival in the summer. They put on such a fun show and the fiddler is amazingly good.
-
Hope you Cleveland area ladies don't have anyone at the highschool with the shootings today. So sad.
-
Chardon is a very lovely community. It's called the "snow belt" because of the tremendous amount of snow they get in the winter (except this year.). I've been watching the TV coverage all day. It is so sad and tragic.
-
Yes, very sad. What is happening to this world?
-
Hey girls ...
Jaytee, chipmunks are so damn cute but they can be VERY destructive.
Tom and I play a lot of stuff people don't know, kind of adult alternative. John Hiatt, Old 97's, Decemberists, Neil Young, Cake, Cowboy Junkies - a pretty eclectic mix. We play what we like rather than having to "play for the room". My girl band has a growing repertoire which right now includes my favorite "Angel from Montgomery" which was written by John Prine but my favorite cover of it is done by Bonnie Raitt. I also do "Thing Called Love" which was written by John Hiatt, one of my favorite writers, but was made popular by Bonnie Raitt. We also have an Everly Brothers tune, Grace Potter, Indigo Girls, Band of Heathens ... The BroadBand is mostly a lead with three part harmonies. We started working together a few months before I was diagnosed so my treatment has curtailed rehearsals quite a bit. But come summer, we will be back to having Sunday night jams at our place - we set up the drums & sound system outside and invite whoever wants to come play. It is a blast.
Tomorrow I have my last "all over" radiation, then I have 5 boosts (Thurs, 2 on Friday, Monday & Tuesday) and then I am done with radiation. Wed we leave for my company trip to the Dominican Republic for 5 nights. That has been my carrot hanging there, getting me thru all this. And a swim up bar can't hurt, it can only help - right? LOL!
Oh, and I went and tried on wigs today, and picking up a new set of hair tomorrow. Woot!
What happened in Chardon this week was DREADFUL, TRAGIC, UNTHINKABLE. That is why I hate guns. They always seem to end up in the hands of the wrong person. Those poor families. You should not have to be afraid to send your children to school. My prayers are with them.
Enjoy the warm sunshine this week. All the best to my Ohio sisters.
Debbie
-
Debbie - WOW congratulations on being so close to the end of radiation! You certainly deserve that trip to the Dominican Republic. Do you think anyone would notice if I hide in your luggage? LOL
-
GirlPowerDebbie -
I like your taste in music! DH and I went to see The Decemberists when they came to Cleveland last summer. What a great concert !
Today is the last day in Feb. - which means March is here - which means SPRING is just around the corner! Yeah!!!
Hang in there ladies!! -
Just wondering how Eileen is doing....haven't heard from you in a while. Hope all is well.
-
Hi Kelly, I am doing ok . My first treatment was 2 weeks ago today. Right on schedule my hair is beginning to come out when I comb it. I had it cut short on friday. My hair is very thick ,hope it is a while before I have to shave it. I am going for a colonoscopy on friday due to constipation and diarrhea. Not sure that the diarrhea and constipation are side effects of chemo because it did not begin until 10 days post chemo .Both my PCP and MO think it is anxiety and stress. I do not look forward to the colonoscopy but for my own peace of mind I have to do it. Getting anxious about 2nd treatment scheduled for March 7th.
Thanks for thinking of me.
-
Eileen - Glad to hear you are doing ok....although I'm sorry you have to have that colonoscopy! You'll be in my thoughts. I knew you could do it and I hope the SE's continue to be kind to you. I go for #5 tomorrow so wish me luck!
-
Kelly, Praying that all goes well with treatment #5. Whew--You are almost done. Hooray!!! Hang in there.. Thoughts and prayers that treatment 5 has minimal to no SE's Good luck.
Eileen
-
Eileen ... hang in there. The colonoscopy is not bad, it is the prep that is a bitch! Once you drink that stuff, you just stay close to the potty and you keep thinking how much could there be in there? You will lose 8 pounds instantly. (Well not instantly, it takes a couple hours.)
One of my two biggest SE from chemo was my digestive tract was messed up. Could not eat hardly anything - I lived on Bob Evans mac & cheese and their mashed potatoes. And either had diarrhea or was ridiculously constipated. So hopefully your issues are just SE from chemo, nothing more. But look at the bright side, you will have that colonoscopy out of the way and be good for 10 years!
That's me, always looking for a silver lining in there somewhere ... think positive thoughts. Think SPRING!
Debbie
-
Kelly,
Good luck tomorrow. You're rounding the bend and heading toward home!!
-
Thanks Eileen and sewingnut - I may have to ask my DH to actually drag me there. Isn't it strange how we can look forward to something almost as much as we dread it? I look forward to it so I can be that much closer to being done. But of course I dread it because I'm not looking forward to the week that follows! It helps to know you are all there with me in thought! Thanks again ladies!
