It's a toxic world-let's educate each other

Marianna - true! In other countries the list is shorter. But is it because they do not have the requirement to list everything on their bottles OR that those products truly contain less things? We don't know. However, here is something I was thinking about. I love Weleda products and in Germany- my friends tell me---those products are considered very healthy to use whereas in the US, according to ewg.org, they are not. Yet! the same organization tells us that it is OK to use petroleum jelly base products. And it gives those products very low numbers. Why? It does not make sense. Here is an article form Livestrong:
http://www.livestrong.com/article/226763-side-effects-of-petrolatum/
-
That article directly quotes something from Environmental Working Group (ewg.org) - weird.
-
Mariana thanks for the link. I went to a dermotologist many years ago for acne and he told me to only use moisterizer without mineral in the ingredients which i have always tried to do , but so many do have it in there. He descirbed it as the oil used to lubricate machines and that it does not add moisture to the skin ebcause it blocks the good stuff in the lotion from being absorbed. I used to use a lotion called Siemens which the pharamcist kept behind the counter not sure if it's still out thhere.
-
Very interesting about petrolatum. Most RO's recommend Aquafor during radiation and it contains 41% petrolatum. Glad I did not use it much during radiation.
-
so what do you all use on your lips that does not have petrolatum?
-
Carrol - there are lots of lipbalms that are without petrolium like the one Burts Bees makes with beeswax.
-
Or Dr. Bronner's Magic organic lipbalm also made with beeswax. There are so many. You can just google them.
-
I use Mary Kay Satin Lips - my consultant told me it has no petroleum. I tried a couple of other natural ones, one from Trader Joes and it literally hurt my lips after the first day - weird. I know that was it because I quit using it, went back to Mary Kay for a week or two then tried it again and it did it again.
-
Maybe I will look into Mary Kay. The ones with beeswax seem to cause my lips to swell. I asked my allergist and she says since I'm highly allergic to pollen could be I'm sensitive to the beeswax.
Wasn't there something about USP Petrolatum not being bad? Maybe that's what EWG was rating?
Just wondering as this is all new to me so baby steps to a healthier lifestyle.
-
Patoo - I am not that worried about a bit of petrolatum in a lipbalm. I don't think we need to go to extremes. But we should cut back on our "toxic loads". I am very concerned about what I use in the shower when my pores are open (our skin is our largest organ) or what I wash my hair with (although I hardly have any hair even though I am 1 year PFC). (We could even start a discussion about our waters' toxicity b/c there is a lot to talk about.) But my biggest concerns are what I eat and drink. I try to buy organic veggies and fruits. At least, I follow the "dirty dozen" rule. I also filter my water that I drink. That might be a start for you, too. Below is an article about the veggies and fruits we should try to buy organic. Other things....we can get away with buying non-organic if we have no access to it. I get regular mango, pineapple, avocado and other things that have thick skins. But I always get my kale or other greens organic.
-
I know of 2 ladies who had cancer on the face.both lived in different states and did not know each other....they both used big drs.and both drs.told them to use only Vaseline.AND neither one of them had any problems from the rads.Their skin looks lovely.
Every damn day the picture changes.....im getting sick and tired of changing products that are really expensive only to find out they are crap.
this bc sure does suk
-
Thanks Survivorwoman. I also am not going to go bonkers with this. Like you I will make changes where I can but if it would stress me to try and get away from all toxins that would not be any better. I have changed the products I put on my skin; still have to get better at organic fruits and veggies, but at least I have started. Thanks for the article, I have printed it out.

I noticed that some of you are going to EWG for information. I use to trust them too, but I did some research and I cannot find out where they are getting their information. I looked into their background and like many other websites that professs to be about helping others, they are connected to the TIDES foundation. That is why I no longer trust them. TIDES is a political org started by hedgefund billionaire and former Nazi youth member Georg Soros who is a wanted man in many countries for manipulating economies.
That said, we do need to be very aware of using toxic products. I try to keep it simple. Go back to what grandma used. Coconut oil is still my choice for great skin, though I love some of Usana's products. In fact, the night renewal creme has shown to have great results for radiation.Usana has a patent on the preservation system that eliminates the need for parabens or formaldehydes. Parabens are endocrine disruptors, but formaldehydes are actually carcingenic.
I agree we need to avoid petroleum products. I use to slather it on my lips. No more! Even some supplements are bound with petroleum. You can tell because they will actually cause fruit to turn black.
It is so hard not to be afraid of everything. I think too many websites like EWG can put us into a panic. We cannot avoid all the toxins, but we can minimize them as much as possible by just keeping it simple. We do not need all these products. Lemon juice and baking soda still clean the sink as well as anything.
KISS-Keep It Super Simple

Here is a link to more info about EWG
http://activistcash.com/organization_overview.cfm/o/113-environmental-working-group
I would like to caution when you read this article. Read it with an open mind. The truth is somewhere in the middle. While it is true that EWG has a political agenda more than a philanthropic one, this article also dispels the autism and vaccine connection, even though the Brits have exposed how Dr. Wakefield was set up when he tried to blow the whistle on it all. He is now being vindicated.
I have learned to keep digging for the truth. It is not always easy. There are so many layers to these websites and even the activistcash has an agenda.
I have been trying to blog about who can we trust on my website for 2 years now, but I can never finish the blog because I just have not been able to come up truly trustworthy sources. I guess in the end, we all need to trust in our common sense.
PS I did find a well researched book that does a wonderful job of separating fact from myth about skincare. It is called "Youre Skin and You" by Bea Kinnear. Bea really did her homework and I learned a lot.
-
Patoo, Vivre: check out Cinco Vidas. The lady behind is a cancer survivor and has regular lectures at Gilda's club NYC.
-
Vivre-I would be interested to read how Dr Wakefield is being 'vindicated' now. Can you lead me to where I can find this-as well as how he was 'set up'.
Also-I don't trust EWG either-I looked up my favorite products that all use human growth hormone and they were rated favorably. HGH is terrible for breast cancer.
-
In an earlier post I also was questioning the trustworthiness of ewg.org. It gave 1 to Vaseline but gave 4 to Weleda's baby wash/shampoo. So we were talking about petrolatum getting a very low number, though, it is clearly not good for us.
-
Hey folks, I am not for EWG.org. They along with other sources are a way to look up what may be in the products you use. I agree that some of stuff seems biased or off but then so many of the sites we look at seem to have conflicting information. Guess all we can do is to keep looking and take nothing as gospel, picking out what seem relevant to you.
-
Hi all, just wanted to say I appreciate you all for the information you share here. I agree we are always going to get conflicting information and do have to just KISS. Thanks.
-
Mallory-From what I read, Dr. Wakefield is now living in Texas and is suing for defamation of character. He has evidence of how he was set up by big pharma. We will have to see how it all pans out. We need to get to the truth of what is causing all this autism. It is heartbreaking how our children's lives are being destroyed. But Dr. W will be fighting some big bucks since Bill Gates is on the pro vaccine side. Gates is really starting to scare me.
Survivor woman- I am still not sure what I think about the cinco vidas site. It does not seem well researched. For instance, in her blog about radiation, she promotes seaweed for detox. This is against what Dr. Brownstein recommends as seaweed usually has high levels of PCB's and other toxins and it is impossible to eat enough to get the amount of iodine needed to displace the toxicity of radiation. She also sites the campaign for safe cosmetics as source of info. This is just another branch of the EWG.
Here is more I found out about EWG:
http://personalcaretruth.com/2011/08/ewg-the-endlessly-wrong-group/
As I said, it is sooooo frustrating trying to decide who to trust these days. There is no black and white. I am just trying to use as much caution as possible without letting it become an obsession.lol
-
I agree that it's very difficult to figure out who speaks the truth these days. All the conflicting information really makes for muddy water. Many non-profit groups are at odds with each. One example is the Center for Consumer Freedom. Their 'about us' page says: "Founded in 1996, the Center for Consumer Freedom is a nonprofit organization devoted to promoting personal responsibility and protecting consumer choices. We believe that the consumer is King. And Queen.
A growing cabal of activists has meddled in Americans’ lives in recent years. They include self-anointed "food police," health campaigners, trial lawyers, personal-finance do-gooders, animal-rights misanthropes, and meddling bureaucrats.
Their common denominator? They all claim to know "what’s best for you." In reality, they’re eroding our basic freedoms—the freedom to buy what we want, eat what we want, drink what we want, and raise our children as we see fit. When they push ordinary Americans around, we’re here to push back."
Meanwhile, a group like CSPI, Center for Science in the Public Interest, will file lawsuits after literally decades of inaction by the FDA to perform its duties in actually providing consumer protection. CSPI filed a lawsuit against Denny's for excessive sodium throughout its menu. A healthy young person's daily dose should be 2500 mg, for many others -- only 1500 mg/day. Denny's LOW end of the scale clocks in with meals at 2500 mg/sodium, several in the 3000-5000 range, and one that topped 6000 mg. The lawsuit was defeated and 'freedom' group gloated over the failure of this 'frivolous' lawsuit. Meanwhile, death by heart attack, fueled by sky high intake of sodium, is a leading cause of death.
The first place to look, of course, is the money trail. Many non-profits are mouthpieces for larger organizations like food groups and trade associations. Look to see who the major donors are. People may not like the idea of 'food police', but why is the freedom to create a heart attack so sacrosanct? Clearly the 'freedom' group is failing to convince people to embrace personal responsibility. The overall health of our population speaks to that in spades. And it's truly a shame that a group like the CSPI has to resort to lawsuits to try and provide some consumer protection that is in the FDA's court to begin with.
-
I agree with Althea - I have been digging through some of these supposed experts for about 6 months now and it is really ridiculous. An example is sodium laural sulfate. I heard this is the worst product in the world and will SURELY cause cancer. THEN I read that a medical college in Georgia was about to sue because this information about SLS became a campaign based on one of their doctors research which was taken out of context and that SLS is not bad unless you use mountains of it and don't wash it off...ever....The campaign about SLS was pushed by a company that was making products that did not contain SLS so it was to their financial benefit to exaggerate the findings! OY VEY!
-
This just in....nipples healing nicely and tattooing is scheduled in April. Have a good evening...
-
Althea is right, follow the money.
But I do not trust the govt. either. It is too infiltrated by special interest groups these days and the FDA is so heavily funded by big pharma, so who can trust them. This is why more govt. regulations scare me. That will just mean more bureacrats and more opportunity for orgs to get in bed with congress critters.
I heard Jeff Smith, the founder of the anti GMO campaign and he had some really great advice. He said that the best thing we can do is get educated about food safety and then vote with our wallets. If we do not buy products that are suspect, they will stop making them. If we demand products that are safer, there will be entrepreneurs who will seize the opportunity to come up wiht products to fill the void.
Sheri-You are right about SLS. It was another scare promoted by EWG and their safe cosmetics branch. They also started the lead in the lipstick propanganda which was later refuted because the lead was such miniscule amts and probably traced to water. Congrats on your new nips!

Interesting thread! I'm adding it to my favs!

It's in my favs also although all the great posts make my head spin!
-
I completely agree about voting with our wallets. That always gets the attention! As for who to trust....well I don't trust anyone when it comes down to it. Not when it comes to making money off of bc. As for what we eat, the less processed, organic and pure food is what I'm after. I grow my own veggies from organic seed. I buy local organic fruit. I can't do anything about the pollutants in the air but I figure if I eat right and take detox supplements that will help keep the toxins flushed out.
It's good to see more awareness about Big Pharma and the FDA. There is so much dirty business going on between these two, not to mention their ties with politicians. Can I post a link here? It's written by an MD, Marcia Angell. http://www.wanttoknow.info/truthaboutdrugcompanies who was editor of the New England Journal of Medicine, a very prestigious journal for the medical world.
ciao,
tucker
-
I read Marcia Angell's book about drug companies years ago and found it horrifying and illuminating at the same time. The FDA and other agencies have a revolving door with an endless flow between government positions and top level executives of corporations. That's nothing new and I tend to think of it as common knowledge, but I'm not sure if it's common knowledge or not.
What I found especially egregious that I did not know, however, is what Angell calls the 'black box.' Many things are hidden in the black box, including the body of research that will never be published. Other scientists can't get to it even if they suspect certain research exists. These would be, of course, the studies that show harmful effects of drugs being studied. Since the final phase of research and development falls into the lap of big pharma, they can choose to bury anything they want. Science was my weak subject in school, and I dodged it as much as possible, but even I know the scientific method includes the communication of results. A lot of results are buried in the black boxes of drug companies.
-
althea,
That is really frightening, isn't it? I still believe there are cures for many disease, including cancer, but the research is squashed because illness, including cancer, are huge money makers for pharma. It's the same thing with cars that use alternative fuels - they go out of business or whatever, but the research is not allowed to come forward because of big oil interests who prefer we use fossil fuels. Sure there are electric cars out there, but they are not realistic for long road trips and they are pricey. We've all seen the evidence that cars can run on cooking oils but that will never happen.
As long as big pharma is controlling everything, including politicians who receive huges grants from pharmas, we won't see any cures. I plan to rely on my naturopath who follows Hippocrates better than any MD when he said 'Let your food be your medicine'.
Here is a good website from an MD who is supportive of integrative oncology and is a chemo oncologist for over 30 years, Keith Block, MD http://www.lifeovercancer.com/ for those of you who have questions about alternatives...
And so it goes.
