Bludin the snow is beautiful. We don't get that often here either.
I am going to some friends for super bowl so I have made an hot almond cheesedip and a Coconut pecan pie. I'll try to take a picture later and post it.
Teka I am thinking about my spring garden as well. I finally harvested my broccoli. Don't know if my cabbage will have enough time to make it. Hopefully the new beds I am building for next fall will have much more sunlight.

I made a yummy salad this evening. I sliced up watermelon radishes very thinly, chopped up apples and onions. The dressing was a cider vinegar EVOO dressing with a little lemon. It was so yummy and I loved the crunchiness.
-
What is an EVOO dressing?
-
Wren-EVOO is Extra Virgin Olive Oil

All you do is take a heart shaped cookie cutter and take the tip off of it.....although, I guess you would not have to, but all you do to make the butts is decorate the heart upside down. It was not an original idea....saw them on one of the threads, but forget which one and when, but thought How cute. Thank you Maya and Sherry and everyone for the compliments...yes, I probably could get more for them, Sherry, But there is always the issue of dog hair, my hair, getting into the dough....lots of it flying around at my house right now (mine that is) . So I only sell them to people I know and would not want to change them too much. I use one of the smaller round tips ( a #2 I think) to draw the outlines of the panties or the thong or whatever and then fill it in and put lace or whatever I want the trim to be on it .
The reason I came on here was to post a recipe that I love, but then again I LOVE mushrooms. You could have it as a side, on a salad or I used it as an appetizer.
MARINATED MUSHROOMS
Boil 1 lb of mushrooms ( cut stems down, or you can remove them altogether and just use the cap part...I like the small to med sized ones so they are just a bite size) for 10 mins and drain. While still warm, dump mushrooms into mixture of 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup vinegar, 1/4 cup oil, 1/2 Tbsp. chopped oregano and 1 tsp. salt. Add 2 small onions sliced and marinate for at least 12 hrs.
I usually do more than a pound and also you can use the marinade over after you eat the mushrooms.
I have found the longer they sit, the better they are and they are Ummmmm. But as I said I love mushrooms.
Marilyn, I saw pics of the Coliseum in the snow in the newspaper. I love beets, Carolyn....pickled beets....like them almost as much as mushrooms.
-
The mushroom recipe sounds great--I also love mushrooms.
Marilyn, my friends live in Naples and for the first time in the 8 years that they have been there, they have snow , not as much as in the North but they did have to dust off their car. Keep warm!
-
Marybe--mmm, mmm mushrooms! love them too. Good source of vitamin D.
Carolynn79--your chicken wings have been on my mind since you posted...crispy, hot sauce with blue cheese dip...ahh the memory.
Mandy...we heard on the news last night that Naples did well through this. I broomed off our cars and shoveled a path to them yesterday. When we went food shopping, I put saw horses to save our parking spot. DH said that wasn't permitted. I said, "Let them try to take that spot!" I'm a seasoned veteran of snow days and parking spaces in Philadelphia! Today the sun helped a lot and main roads are clear. I chipped an inch of ice off the dogs water bucket just from the nighttime cold. My spider plants look like they've had it....we'll see...they could surprise me.
Tomorrow we take the train to a postop check up for DH...we didn't make it on Monday. Then Friday & Saturday more snow is forecast all day. We consider ourselves lucky when I see what others are enduring in the North.
DH made more veggie soup with beef...so warming. I bought some more dried black beans and peas. Baking bread or pies is a great idea. The problem is that I'm trying to shed some cholesterol and pounds...these foods are counter intuitive for that purpose...I'll think about them again on Friday & Saturday when we're housebound ;-)
-
Marybe, you clever girl you, thanks for the toot-orial on the butt cookies. If I'm understanding you correctly, what you're saying is that we all have butts hidden in our hearts.

I cannot wait to take some of these to the nurse who (bless her butt, er I mean heart) has to look at mine every month for my double Faslodex shots. I bet that will get a laugh or two in the infusion room!
-
Lulubee, I am sure they will crack up....maybe give them after the shot so they are not shaking when they inject. I used ivory in the white icing for flesh....a litte pink to get another shade and a little brown to get the tanner looking shade, but if you are just making a few, I am sure just the one color skin would be fine. I did smaller and larger hearts......big and small butts. Good luck. I will post the pic blown up so you can study the pants....making a thong of course was the easiest......Oh this would be really fun....make the pants like that pair you are going to wear that day! LOL

-
Marybe: these are just great.
-
Oh golly, those are a hoot!! Thanks for all the tips, Marybe! You are my kind of nut.

Buon giorno!
Happy belated Valentine's Day. Our plans for a nice dinner in town were thwarted by the snow. I'm chicken to drive on icy roads. We decided to go another day. We managed to have our cappucino and cornette at our favorite bar in the morning...stopped in while we were making shopping rounds around town while the sun shined.
Crazy winter indeed! My friends and family in Iowa, Pennsylvania and Colorado were basking in the Spring weather until this week. They were excited to see snow!
Robins are my favorite sign of Spring. Maybe that groundhog was wrong. We certainly didn't need a groundhog to tell us that there is a cold wind a blowin'.
So soup of the day is still our choice of comfort food ... here's a veggie & beef soup that DH made. We put most into the blender to puree. We keep some in the frig for two days. The rest goes into freezer bags for another day. I love pulling them out and using them later...like a little surprise gift when we least expect it sort of thing.

The second storm arrived....hard to think now that in a brief while, the vines will be buzzing with bees, and the table will be dressed for friends. I think I'll put this picture out there to remind them of our surprising earth.

Hope all are warm and cozy.
Marilyn

Teka,
Here's hoping the the storm tracks out to sea.
The blackberry pie sounds yummy. I prefer blackberry less sweet...like the wild cherries.
Today I clipped some oranges and juiced almost 2 liters. I craved them for my cold and scratchy throat. Just a little rice for lunch...
Carolynn79 -- I can't go by your pic of chicken wings without wanting some. Maybe this is the best way to diet!
It doesn't hurt to look!Best wishes to all,
Marilyn

Buon giorno,
What a long stretch of circumstances there have been to get in the way of my writing. First the storms, then this blasted cold with fever.
My appetite didn't suffer too much. Friday we went shopping at the pasta shop. Bless those ladies...I hope never to see these disappear from the culture. Next time I take the camera...(we asked permission). It's in the center of town. Early in the morning, outside the shop are empty egg cartons and shells. Inside is an assortment of every kind of pasta for this region...and some crepes too. The prices are the same as shopping at the butcher, and worth every euro.
So yesterday for lunch, we had lasagna--carciofi (artichoke) with mushroom in a creme sauce. I finished to clean the bowl with bread. DH poured me a glass of red wine to help thwart off my cold.
Dinner was sgombro (mackerel--blue fish). He halfed some cherry tomatoes...I pited and diced (k)calamata olives...he put that over the fish in a pan with a bit of olive oil and white wine. It was more than delicious...and it reminded me of a recipe that my father sometimes cooked.

I took two sudafed and asprin and went to bed early.
Best wishes to all as always,
Marilyn

today after church we went to the lumber yard and bought the materials for two more raised garden beds. Got home and took a nap and then got our beds put together. So hopefully this week I can get a load of compost from the local mushroom farm and then Saturday get organic dirt from my brothers company. then I can start planting my spring garden. Can't wait for the heirloom tomatoes. They are always so good. Today I picked broccoli from the garden and it was so good for supper. Also made meatloaf which I have not done in awhile and it was yummy as well. Lot's of leftovers. Also the other day I made a blackberry cobbler that was so easy and so good. I'll try to post the recipe for all of you.
-
Sherryc--Your Spring Garden plans sound great. So did the meatloaf. Haven't had that in awhile myself...some mashed potatoes with it. Think I'll talk DH into that.
We went to the agricultural store today. First day in a week that I felt like being outside after a nasty cold. I'm dusting off the winter. The sun is up and giving us warmth, light and smiles. It was good to see the new plants that are arriving at the store. I get so excited about spring flowers.
I asked them if they sold a garden table like they use for display. He said it would be easier to have one made. We'll contact the man who made the gates and see what he can do. Then we need to build the garden box. I'm thinking to make the box foldable for storage later. I bought 10 bags 80 kilo ea. of earth for the garden to fill what settled between the pavement floor and around the trees. I'll seed the floor with clover and plant around the trees. I'm thinking to sprinkle some lime before I put down the earth...it is, afterall, the dog garden. Even though I hose and scoop, a little lime can't hurt.
Family friends are coming for lunch tomorrow. It was good incentive to clean up the garden from the disaster after the snow.(I noticed that the birds are dining on berries and seeds...the evidence is everywhere. It was a good feeling though to know that the food was there for them.) We're not planning anything special. Just pasta and sauce. It's their visit and conversation we're looking forward to.
March winds are coming...I always though of them as nature's broom cleaning. We'll be ready for it all.
Best wishes,
M

Here is the Blackberry Cobbler recipe. It turned out great but I think next time I will add a teasp of vanilla to the batter.
BLACKBERRY COBBLER
Ingredients
1 stick butter
1 ¼ cup sugar
1 cup self rising flour
1 cup milk
2 cups fresh blackberries
Instructions
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Melt butter in microwavable dish. Pour 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup flour into a mixing bowl, whisking in milk. Mix well, then pour in melted butter and whisk it all together. Butter a disposable baking dish. Rinse and pat dry the blackberries. Pour the batter into the buttered baking dish. Sprinkle blackberries over the top of the batter; distributing evenly. Sprinkle ¼ cup sugar over the top. Bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until golden and bubbly. If you desire sprinkle an additional teaspoon of sugar over the cobbler 10 minutes before it is done.

Yesterday after work I harvested all the greens and broccoli in the garden. Took some to my mom and then cooked the rested and put in the freezer. I love greens, DH tolerates them because he knows they are good for him. Tomorrow we are going to get mushroom compost from our local mushroom farm. It is the best in gardens. The following week will get my dirt. I have one bed that is empty now that i harvested it so Sunday I will plant onions and potatoes. I just love my fresh veges. And to think before BC I never had a garden, DH gets a kick out of how much I have enjoyed it. He enjoys the veges.

Teka we are very fortunate here. I live in a rural community where we have a mushroom farm, eggs farms, chicken farms and of course cattle farms. Some of these are organic so I can go to the mushroom farm and buy direct and fresh. There is an organic egg company and I can go to the plant and buy my eggs really cheap. Also an organic chicken company so I can go to the processing plant and buy then just process and on ice. Everything is grown for commercial like Whole Foods but I can buy direct. I just need to find a place for organic grass feed beef. None of that in my area that I am aware of. Oh and I just found out about an organic dairy farm. I need to check that one out. I was talking to one of our Master Gardeners here and they said the mushroom compost keeps your garden fertilzed for up to 3 to 4 years. I'll have to post some pictures when the garden starts growing

I don't eat meat, but when I buy meat or poultry for my husband, I look for the most organic and natural that I can find. So he eats "grass fed", hormone and antibiotic free beef and organically fed, hormone free chicken. What Teka says is true..this is the stuff that our parents and grandparents had growing up.
