Lumpectomy on Feb 1st - Looking for a "Cancer Buddy"
I was diagnosed with DCIS Stage 0 High Grade. My lumpectomy is scheduled for Wed., 2/1, followed by 6 weeks of radiation. Anybody out there in a similar situation? I am new to this and would love to share notes as I go through this. Thanks!

HI Sally! I know you're going thru quite a bit right now! The waiting is the hardest part of it all almost! We've all been there. YOu can be so very thankful; that you have DCIS. I did too 2 years ago. The lumpectomy is not bad at all. You'll probably be able to make it afterwards on Advil, if even that. It's just not a bad surgery at all. You'll be back to normal in no time at all. So don't worry about the actual surgery...it's just getting to the surgery date. I am sure others will be sharing their experiences with you here shortly. You'll find great support on the site. Debbie
-
Thanks for the support, Debbie! It's good to talk with someone who has been through it. I had been reading mixed views on recovery, so glad to hear you were fine. Did you go through radiation, too? I'll have either 6 weeks radiation or, if I'm a candidate, I'll have SAVI 5 day.
-
Hi Sally - I was diagnosed with DCIS in August and had a lumpectomy followed by SAVI radiation in Sept. As Debbie said, the lumpectomy wasn't bad at all. I had it done on a Thursday and by Saturday was out and about. The doctor did give me Tylenol with codine which I didn't even need. I just took Tylenol. I went back a little over two weeks later and had my SAVI device put in. I do have to admit there was a lot of pressure when this was inserted. The pressure lessened as time when on. I did find it more comfortable to sleep on a wedge pillow so my body was slightly elevated. Also, I thought the SAVI would only be in for 5 days, but it was in for 9. I had it put in on a Wednesday, Thursday they checked to make sure it was still in place correctly. Then had my treatments Fri., Mon., Tues., Wed., and Thursday when it was removed after my last treatment. I'm not sure, maybe some radiation centers also treat on weekends. But, compared to the 6 weeks of regular radiation, I guess it was a breeze. If you have any other questions, please let me know. Best of luck to you!

Went through this a little over 3 years ago. The lumpectomy caused pain only immediately after the surgery, which percocet took care of and a little bit the next day. I had small breasts, and 2 days later, when I took off the binder and looked at my breast, I almost had a heart attack. It was flat as a pancake. I feared that they had removed much more tissue than I was told would be removed. But after putting in a slightly hysterical call to my surgeon's office, I was told that this was temporary due to fluid shifts of surgery and that it would come back to normal size within a few days. And it did. I also had some numbness in most of my armpit because of the sentinel node biopsy procedure, which made shaving that area tricky. Most of the sensation did come back over a several month period. I was back to doing pushups within 2 weeks. Took off work for 3 weeks, but really could have gone back in a week. For me, radiation was a breeze. I had absolutely no side effects at all, not even the fatigue that is supposedly so common, and I continued to work my full time night shift Nursing job throughout the entire 6 week period. No skin burns or irritation at all. I applied the cream that they gave me every day, along with aloe vera gel in between as well.
I've never regretted going this route because for me, keeping my real breast with nipple sensation intact was one of the deciding factors. Good luck to you!

Sally, I just sent you a private message.
-
Thanks, everyone, for the support. Sunny - I'm hoping to be a candidate for SAVI, also. Glad to hear it went well for you. Feeling pretty good right now - hope to keep that up!
-
Sally,
Please PM me if you have any questions about SAVI.

Hi Sally,
I had a lumpectomy in late Dec and it went smootly, had a little more pain then others. I find when I move or lie certain ways I get a sharp twinge but nothing that can't be lived with. I didn't have clean margins on one side but otherwise my biopsy came back with the same med grade DCIS so I have to admit that was a huge relief. You will feel relived to when you get that surgical biopsy back.
Well I did have to have a second surgery but they went thru same site and it was a breeze, recovering fine from that now. I have worked through out since I work out of my home except for day after surgeries.
They got it all this time so i will start radiation in a few weeks, i can let you know how that goes if you like. A friend is going thru the same thing and has already completed her radiation did the Tomotherapy of two times a day for a week said it was a breeze zero pain.
I am also Estrogen postive, but I hear that is a good thing because there are drugs to take to further prevent reacurrance. I have yet to see the Oncologist.
Good luck with your surgery. I think you'll find it goes very well. I have had dental surgery that was longer and more painful.
God Bless

Hi BKZOE - Thanks for the message. Glad your surgeries went well. You've got a good attitude, which helps. Let me know how the start of your radiation goes. I'm guessing that I will be starting within the month, too.

Hi Sally..I was diagnosed with DCIS, stage 0, low grade and am scheduled for my lumpectomy on 2/6, with radiation to follow. Have not met w/the oncologist yet. Have you? My surgeon just said that I would most likely need at least 6 weeks of radiation therapy but I won't know for sure till I meet w/oncologist. My mom had exact same diagnosis/stage/grade about 3 years ago and has done very well. She is on tamoxifen now. I had an MRI after bx which showed another smaller area than the one found on mammogram. It is not too far from original site so surgeon plans to excise both sites by doing a "bracket" lumpectomy. Would love to support you & have you support me during our journey. Best of luck w/your surgery...stay strong!
-
Sally, Today was your lumpectomy. Hope you are doing well. Let us hear!!!
-
Hi Everyone - My surgery went very well! I really haven't felt any pain, as I am keeping up with my meds. Originally, I hesitated on filling the prescription (Norco), but then realized, with the encouragement of friends, that it's important to help myself heal. Trying to tough it out is not the smartest move. Hoping Day 2 continues to goes well.
-
Dear SCRAPPYLADY - Our situations are SO similar, as I also had an MRI that found another small spot near the original. Before the lumpectomy, they put a wire in, guided by a mammogram. I felt good all day and have been trying to keep up with the meds (Norco). I came home from surgery and took a good nap, as I'm not sure how much sleep I got the night before. I meet with my surgeon on Monday, 2/6, to discuss the patholgy report. I meet with my medical oncologist the next day. That might be kinda early, but it's hard to get an app't with him, so I grabbed the first one I could get. Not sure when I'll be meeting with the radiation oncologist to discuss the start of my 6 weeks. I would love to continue to share our journeys together and will pray for a successful surgery for you. Keep in touch!

SO glad to hear surgery went smoothly for you!! Was thinking about you. Wow, it does sound almost exact as far as surgery/followup w/surgeon the next Monday...I still don't have appt. set w/oncologist but know who it is so I guess they don't schedule the appt. till after the lumpectomy has been performed. My surgeon said to expect a call from their office to schedule that week between my surgery & followup appt. I will have 2 wires placed before the surgery since they found another smaller area on the MRI she is going to take both out. glad to hear you took the pain meds; I've always heard its better to take then BEFORE you actually need them so they have time to get into your system and help relieving pain before it gets too bothersome. Do you work outside the home? If so what type of work do you do? How many days did you take off for surgery/recovery? I work in an elementary school as a computer lab assistant & plan to take Monday/Tuesday off & see how I am feeling Wed., but hope to go back. I think it will help keep my mind off things. Do you have kids? Ages? Mine are 2 boys, 13 & 15, which is good because they are old enough to understand and ask questions. Plus w/all of us having seen my mom go through the same diagosis/surgery/treatment plan, it seems to be less stressful since we all saw her great outcome. Please keep me posted on how you are doing. I too would love to continue with journey together & so thankful for this forum. Sending healing hugs your way
-
Hi - Thanks for the kind words. I'm still feeling remarkably well. I work as a bookkeeper and plan to take 3 days off after surgery. I feel well enough to go back sooner, but this worked out best in my schedule. Hopefully, you'll feel the same way and be able to go back Wed or Thu. My kids are both away at college this year - 21 yr old son and 18 yr old daughter. Just husband and I at home, so it's kinda quiet, but nice. Let me know how you're feeling after surgery next Monday and i'll let you know how my dr. app't goes. Good luck!
-
Glad to hear surgery behind you. Rest up even if you don't feel you need it. It can catch up to you c the stress added in. Keep us posted on your pathology rpt hopefully you will hear mon. I go to my first radiologist meeting on tues. ready to hear the plan for phase II.

Hello, I'm new here too. I went for my annual mammogram on 12/9/2011 and they called and asked me to come in for an ultrasound and another mammogram because something didn't look right on the right breast. After that visit on 12/23/2011 they called me back for a biopsy. There were two places they were concerned about. The biopsy showed one was a 1.4 cm DCIS and the other was a schlerosing papilloma. Both they told me needed to come out. The surgery was set for 1/25/2012. They sent me for a MRI to determine the actual size and what size margin they needed to take out. Got a call after that telling me the MRI showed things in the left breast the mammogram didn't because I have dense breast tissue. So on the day I was suppose to have surgery I went in for another biopsy on the left side. Surgery was then set for 2/2/2012. But after the results of the left side biopsy came back showing 2 schlerosing papillomas and because on the right side I had the DCIS already they wanted to play it safe and take the papillomas on the left side as well as the papilloma and DCIS on the right side. I am now scheduled for surgery on Monday 2/6 for both breasts. Waiting and putting off has been the pits. I just want to get it over with now. I am told I will follow up surgery in a few weeks with Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation Balloon Cathether 2 times a day for 5 days.
After reading the comments on another thread, this type of radiation doesn't seem too bad. Anyone else have this type and how did it affect you? Also having 4 lumpectomies in one surgery, how hard will this be recovering? Thanks and so glad I found this forum!!
-
After rereading some of these posts it sounds like SAVI and the Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation Balloon Cathether they were telling me about is the same type thing?
-
jigadake...looks like you & I are having our lumpectomies on the same day. Your's sounds a bit more involved than mine; I am "only" having 2 areas removed in the left breast; one that is a confirmed DCIS, stage 0 and another area closeby that was found on the MRI and they will take at the same time. A bracket lumpectomy is what they are calling it. I still haven't met w/or discussed what type or length of radiation I will be having afterwards so that is my "unknown stressor" right now; combined w/the fact that I have muscular dystrophy which already causes me to be quite weak/fatigued, so anxious to find out how the radiation combined w/that will play out. My mom had the same exact diagnosis/stage of DCIS as me 3+ years ago and had 12 weeks of radiation and has been on tamoxifen since. She has been clear on mammograms since then, so that is my hope that I follow in her footsteps. I will keep you in my thoughts/prayers on Monday as we conquer this together!!
-
Scrappylady...this sounds funny but makes me feel better knowing I'm not alone on Monday. So glad to hear your mom is clear after three years..that makes me feel better too! Good luck to you and post back when you can so we know how it went...be thinking of you.
-
Jigadake...I feel the same way you do...thats what is so great about these forums, we can all connect with people who are at the same stage and support each other. What state are you in? What time is your surgery Monday? I am in WA State, so Pacific standard time. I check in @ 6:30 am, go to breast center for 2 wire placements then to outpatient surgery for the lumpectomy. Let me know what time you are going in and I'll send calming, healing thoughts your way. You be sure to post also after you are able so we both know how the other is doing. PS: How do you know what grade you are? Was that on the pathology report from the biopsy? I didn't see anything...hmm, is it like the stages, 0-5? Just curious. Thanks.
-
I'm in Virginia...so opposite side of the US. I have to be there at 7 a.m. Go for 4 wires about 8 and then surgery starts at 11. A lot of waiting I guess..not sure why so much time is needed. I hate getting up early too!!
They said I should be able to come home about 4 p.m.
The grade was on my pathology report. It called it intermediate and I asked if that was 2 and was told it was. I think there are only 3 grades. I found this page on this site that explains it a bit...might help you as it did me. My report also said it was comedo necrosis. So many new words!!
-
Virginia, beautiful state! OK I will be thinking of you tomorrow and please post when you are up to it, as will I, so we know how each of us did.
-
Ok..will do. Good luck to you as well...post when you feel like it!
-
Hey there...quick note..all went well today and not in too much pain so far. . He was able to get the two in the left breast with one incision so have two incisions about 2 1/2 inches on the right side and the one on the left. Very loopy from the drugs but the doctor felt good about how things went and I should hear from the pathology report Thursday or Friday If that shows all margins
clean then radiology will start in a few weeks.Scrappylady how did yours go?
Thanks for all the good thoughts and prayers. -
Jigadake - Glad you're doing well. Let the healing begin! Scrappylady - Hope you're doing well. FYI - I met with my surgeon to discuss pathology report from my lumpectomy. Good news - still DCIS - yea! Bad news - a few cells found on the margins, so I go back in 1+ week for a re-excisional lumpectomy - bummer. More Good News, though, is that it looks like I'm a candidate for SAVI, the 5 day accelerated partial breast radiation. Also, met with medical oncologist today, who shared some positive stat's - DCIS study over 5 years shows reoccurance of 10% (surgery only) and only 5% (surgery and radiation). Needed to hear that.
-
Oh SallyGal, that is good to hear. Feeling even better today but didnt' realize how many chest muscles you use to do simple things like brushing your teeth or opening a jar!!
-
Hi Ladies...Glad to hear you are both doing so well. Sallygal sorry to hear you have to go back in for more excisions, but sounds like your attitude and their prognosis are good! Jigadake...I hear you about using muscles you didn't realize...my big mistake yesterday was folding an afgan! ouch! Also, apparently Vicodin hypes me up, who knew>! So wasn't sleeping too well till last night when I got different pain pill. Slept till 11 am today & feeling much better. My surgery went well too and will hear more about pathology report, etc. this coming Monday at post op appt. w/surgeon. Then on 2/16 will meet w/oncologist about radiation plan. So thankful we have found each other through this forum and have each other's support and input during this journey. Hey, either of you have a suggestion for a good support bra? I am supposed to wear bra 24/7 for awhile. Thanks!
-
I've been wearing a sports bra. I bought two of them at Target before surgery and they both work great. I took it off this morning to take a quick shower and put it right back on...helps alot!
Scrappylady...so glad yours went well too. I started with advil this morning after taking some type of morphine derivative the first two days and advill so far seems to be working ok. I don't stay so dopey feeling with it. I don't have to go back to the doctor for a month and then we will set up the radiation after that.
I hope to hear from the path report tomorrow and hoping all is clear. I'm sorry you have to go back for a bit jore SallyGal. I just talked to a friend of mine and found out she has just found out she has DCIS as well. She meets with her surgeon tomorrow.
-
I ventured out today since I had only taken ibuprofen all day and no pain...went to JC Penneys and got 2 nice sports bras that zip up in the front. Very comfortable & supportive so feeling like I am taking care of things in that department. Ordered 2 more since there were no more left in my size.
Jigadake...seem odd that they are having you wait a month to go back & talk about radiation, but I guess each doc/facility does it differently. I just want to know my length & start date so we can figure out if we can do anything for spring break. Keep us updated on your path report.
