Dr.Oz; Lima Beans and Breast Cancer
Today on the Dr. Oz show a guest Dr. recommended eating lima beans to stop the blood flow to BC tumors/cells. Anyone have any info to share regarding this?

Blech! I don't think I can force down lima beans. I have read about cruciferous vegetables and decreased BC cell activity.
-
LOL! I would rather eat lima beans than chemo pills.
-
*sigh* I don't like lima beans, either. I just had a meal of baby bok choy and kale sauteed with tempeh, and two sides - one of broccoli and one of brussel sprouts. Now that's some cruciferous vegetables!
-
yikes! that would probably be the one and only thing I wouldn't eat for BC-that and olives. I have even gotten over my hatred of mushrooms.. I have oz taped and will be interested to see that.
-
I love lima beans...used to eat them by the plateful...still got bc:(
-
sweetbean you are my hero-that is the meal my naturpath is begging me to eat daily. if you had added cauliflower it would have been the perfect .
i am struggling with his 5 superfoods=that's all i need is "slimey bean" to choke down with it.
I am sure we will all be getting e-mails from all our friends about this latest good thing. I am going to look it up now
-
ooh, i have a recipe for white bean chili that uses white beans (obviously) and cauliflower. It also calls for chicken, so I am going to switch that out for tempeh. I'll let you know!
-
I've also read that cruciferous veggies help but this is the first I've heard of Lima beans. Do they help stop all cancer or just BC? I checked Dr Oz's website but couldn't find anything. Maybe you can email asking for more info to substantiate the claim.

lima beans are suppose to cut off the blood supply to cancer cells. You need to eat a cup everyday.
if you google dr oz, lima beans, breast cancer it will come up.
-
Karra, did you eat them everyday?
-
I saw that too..and I love Lima beans!
-
I taped the show, too, since my memory sux.
What I got out of it was that there was a researcher who has isolated things in certain foods that attack cancer. He showed four different foods that affected four different kinds of cancer.
The first one was breast cancer. He mentioned the ingredient - and unless I'm hallucinating - said it was like "breast cancer cells committee suicide" in the presence of this ingredient.
He said that if everyone ate 1 cup of lima beans per day, it could reduce the risk of breast cancer by 24%.
HOWEVER, there are also numerous sites that say lima beans increase proliferation of estrogen and progesterone positive breast cancer cells!
What are ya gonna do?
Fortunately, I love lima beans, with a big gob of butter on them!
-
I found DR. Oz's site and here is what it says:
Lima beans contain a natural cancer fighter that cause breast cancer cells to die. Eating lima beans can lower risk of breast cancer by 24 percent. You can purchase them in the freezer section. (Shake the bag and make sure the beans separate. If they do not separate, this means they thawed and were re-frozen. (This does not contain as many cancer fighting agents.) Dr. Li suggested steaming or sautéing lima beans in a little olive oil. To get the maximum benefits, eat 1C per day. Lima beans are also high in fiber.
Dr Oz: Parsley Fights Ovarian Cancer
2. Parsley- parsley starves ovarian cancer cells by cutting off the blood supply to the tumor. Eat 1 C chopped parsley per day. You can sprinkle it on rice and eggs. Store fresh parsley by cutting off the stem and placing them in water to keep it fresh. If you store it in the fridge, cover it with a plastic bag.
Dr Oz: Limes Fight Lung Cancer
3. Limes- limes help fight lung cancer with a natural cancer fighter that stops the growth of cancer in its tracks. You can incorporate lime into your diet with lime juice. Slice a lime in half and squeeze out ½ C per day. Pour into cold water and create limeade. Put in a little honey and you have a delicious drink. You can also use lime instead of lemon in tea. Instead of adding salt to your food, squeeze on some lime.
Dr Oz: Apricots Fight Stomach Cancer
4. Apricot- apricots reduce the risk of stomach cancer by 47 percent. Eat 7 dried or fresh apricots per day. If you go for dried, get the sundried and not sulfate dried. (the darker version). Also, buy organic apricots because they have higher levels of cancer fighters.

Thank you for posting that Debbie, I tried numerous times to copy and paste but for some reason I can't on this site.
Blessings, I too saw those sites but there is good and bad estrogen right? Maybe this is the good estrogen?
-
PLANT YOUR LIMA BEANS NOW omgosh.. they are so good fresh. and i love limes, parsley and apricots.. why do i have cancer. they are all on the list of super nutritious foods i read about years ago.
Oz is such a trendsetter.
-
I could easily eat a cup of lima beans a day! Haven't eaten them in the last twelve or so years, because my boyfriend hates them...it's the one veggie he won't have any part of. No problem...I can just have them on the side.
Thanks for the post...I love Dr. Oz but missed that show.
-
Wonder how they tested this stuff. In real people, on mice, or in a petri dish? And it's one thing to "stop cancer cells in their tracks" but another to dissolved a tumor that's already taken hold.
Just remember what the numbers really mean. A 24% reduction is not overall, but from a woman's already pretty low chance of getting the disease...
Anyway, eating well is a good thing. And I love baby lima beans (not the big fat starchy ones!)
-
i am off to buy a bag today. little poles in the ground and 4 beans around each pole.. I hope the deer won't eat them. I'm serious, baby limas fresh out of the pod are absolutely delish.. you can even grow them in a bucket or something.
-
really if it works bravo.. I am always skeptical , I love lima beans tho'
-
apple: Good to know...I will try and grow them in NC at our summer home. I don't have much luck with growing a garden here in Fl. My DGD is in Hawaii now learning how to work an organic farm. She will come back and teach us all how to do it. My DD and DS both have large acreage so they can plant big gardens. Can't wait!

Hi everyone, just to say - proceed with caution on the lima beans - this is the advice from macmillan Cancer Support, the Uks largest cancer charity:Breast cancer-related effects of eating lima beansExtracts of lima beans have been found to increase proliferation of estrogen and progesterone responsive (ER+/PR+) human breast cancer cells. In and of itself, this is not strong evidence that lima bean consumption increases breast cancer risk, however it is a troubling result that requires further study and clarification. In the mean time, we advise against consuming lima beans.Additional commentsLima beans should not be consumed raw and caution is advised when eating the beans overseas since lima beans contain cyanide compounds. The cyanide is released as gas when the beans are cooked, rendering the beans safe to eat. In the U.S., commercially grown varieties of lima beans are restricted to those with very low levels of cyanide compounds, while lima beans in some other countries may have much higher levels. One of lima bean's cyanide compounds is amygdalin, the basis for laetrile (see almonds for a discussion of laetrile). Consuming foods that contain cyanide (such as raw or undercooked lima beans) in combination with laetrile treatment can increase the possibility of cyanide poisoning.
Succotash, a traditional Native American dish, is a combination of lima beans and corn.
Note that while we are continually searching for new evidence specifically concerning this food, there is not much interest in it among breast cancer researchers, so few studies are available. -
Guess I'll pass on the limas! I don't really like them, but they're better than okra...blurghhhh.
-
I saw the show and they said that it is the genistein in the lima beans that cuts the cancer but I am concerned cause that chemical is also in soybeans. However, if you choose to eat lima beans, I saute them in a small amt of olive oil with chopped onions (onions are very good for fighting cancer) and then you mix them with rice (brown or white sticky steamed whichever you prefer) then top with a little butter or fake butter and dash of salt and right before eating put on lots of super fresh bought that day...chopped as small as possible Dill. You can throw in mushrooms if you like or a little shredded meat if you like but I dont usually. that is "how we do it" in my house. Personally I like to listen to Dr Joel Furhman...I like Dr Oz but he has some left field people on his show sometimes like Mercola....if I listen to Mercola I am gonna sit in the thermo room and miss my Ultra sd and miss my cancr which since its invasive would not be pretty! Also what ever happened to Dr John Lee and his books saying progesterone cream protects from breast cancer ...well how about progesterone receptor breast cancer..hows that work!!???
-
Hillside: hummmm....maybe that's the good estrogen and progestrone that our bodies need to have a balanced hormone level. Could that possibly be the reason they work to prevent bc recurrence? I guess like everything else regarding diet...you have to take the information and decide what will work for you. I'm not totally convinced that removing all estrogen and progestrone from our bodies is a good thing. IMO we need a natural balance to have a good supply of energy and a feeling of well being. Unfortunately my MO doesn't agree.
-
Maybe lima beans are for ER-? I'm thinking the cyanide causes the cells to die but since that verison is not in the USA , it wouldnt matter. Even if you had access to the real lima beans you wouldnt know how much to eat. I do believe that once upon a time the "real' lima beans were used as medicine.
-
Heres my take on it- Everything you eat is going to have some study on it saying there are SE or should not be eaten if you are ER+, You have to worry and be cautious with everything we eat, first its good for you then its not. It is mind boggling/ I say eat everything in moderation and dont buy things that are grown outside of the US. I bought some oranges last week it wasnt until i got home that I saw a sticker on it that said from Africa, I couldnt believe it, we have fresh grown oranges here and are buying from across the globe!
IMO i think growing your own lima beans like APPLE said or buying right here in the usa just might be beneficial. Im going to investiage the growing them out of a bucket
-
Most fruits are imported. I was told bananas are not grown in the USA. The majority of US oranges were from Brazil until that fungus was exposed last month. Besides the pesticides they use in other countries, I wish I could find some original seeds. Most seeds now are GMO.
Debbie, did your orange have seeds inside? Mine don't.
-
Thatgirl- I was too nervous to eat them so tossed them out. I go to our local growers market here and try to buy fresh veggies and fruit when i can.
-
OH MAN.. I've always eaten them raw when they are babies.. they are sooo good.
-
Apple- Do you have to have a big bucket so they dont get crowed? And silly question i know but can you do them indoors?
