Denis, thank you for sharing that video.  I'm so sorry for your loss.  I loved seeing Lynn smile as she rode Sailor.  I know things must be hard for you right now.  Thinking of you and your family.

Denis - THANK YOU for sharing that wonderful video of Lynn and Sailor. The look of joy on Lynn's face as she rode was absolutely priceless. I am so very sorry for your loss.

Thank you to all the riders who watched the video. Lynn was very proud to make it around that day as you could see by the little fist pump at the end. It was the last day she ever rode. :(

Supersally, how are the ribs??  Hope you are feeling better.

I am doing chiro on horses and dogs.  I've actually done a couple old cats too that have both responded beautifully!  I agree that it would be great for your Corgis.  Many people wait until their animals are having problems to get them started with chiropractic, but if you have a dog that works for a living (I mean like agility or field trials, not working on holding down the bed like mine do...) or a long-backed dog like Corgis and Dachshunds, it can really help prevent major problems.

Speaking of major problems, I'm starting to freak out about my horse (Emrys.)  We have an appointment for Monday at New Bolton Center, mainly to get corrective shoes. (I have a major blacksmith problem where I am now. Not easy to find a good one that is easily available.) The day after that last post he was NOT sound, and he still isn't.  I xrayed his feet again to check out his angles and despite getting him shod every 4 weeks, keeping toes short, good heel support, etc., he still has a broken-back hoof/pastern axis AND a negative palmar angle to P3 (coffin  bone rotated slightly down in the back, opposite direction of founder) AND what I've noticed before, which is a gnarly (medical term) area on his coffin bone where arthritis usually shows up.  That is potentially a surgical issue, otherwise it may prevent him from being sound enough to do much.  It's probably an OCD lesion or even an old improperly healed fracture.  But he also has some mild arthritis in his left front at that site too; I was chalking it up to his poorly angled pasterns and feet that he's dealt with for the past 6 years.  Sorry to give all these details if you don't know what I'm talking about but I thought some of you would find it interesting.  Minor things with my own horses don't bother me, but when things start to get more serious I turn into a "mom" and need to have someone else work on them.

If anyone is really interested, I can put his xrays on here.  I'll even "draw" on them and point out what the issues are.

horsedoc--you might want to contact Meg Sherman at EquiStar Farm. She raises top of the line horses and might have some other names for you to try. She used a guy named Eddie when I was there, but for the life of me I can't remember his last name. He did USET horses. Tell her Heidi sent you. PS- she has a great shop there too, some of it consignment.

Denis, I just watched Lynn's film.  What a great job she did and what a lovely event and fundraiser.  It's very uplifting.  I am  so sorry that she is gone.  I can see what fun she had with Sailor.  Thank you for sharing it.

Horsedoc - my ribs are better, thanks for asking!  I saw the chiropracter Friday and today.  He said the ribs were out of place, adjusted them, and I am much better.  I'm still a little sore, but getting better every day.  Yet another endorsement for chiropractic care.  I believe you were taking your horse to New Bolton today to get some new shoes?  Let us know how the appointment went and how he is doing.

Hope everyone else has been able to get some horse time in!  I did over the weekend.

Check out www.tackoftheday.com  they have a great hoodie on sale until 12:00 noon eastern time.  I am not much into hoodies but this one is so very nice.

Working is interfering with my BCO time.  Got a job last week and now I hardly have time to get on here and I have to leave now to go to work but wanted to put the sale out there for anyone that is interested.

Tack of the Day can be dangerous!!  Years ago when it first started I had it set so I got an email of what was on that day.  I had to stop that, it was too tempting!

Well I got some bad news about my horse.  I brought him up there and had a surgeon and the farrier look at him and both were pessimistic because of his conformation and the fact that he has arthritis already.  (I was well aware of those things but I'm an eternal optimist so I am just not pessimistic about it...) Anyway, the surgeon was thinking the same thing as me, that the joint problems that are visible on the xray views I took were problem the culprit but they were NOT!  So after joint and nerve blocks, more xrays w/o shoes, AND an MRI, the final diagnosis is wing fracture of his coffin bone (luckily not involving the joint) and also luckily no ligament tears or other soft tissue damage.   So 1. I'm glad this horse has insurance that paid for a large part of that or else I couldn't have afforded it, and 2. Glad this has a great prognosis, but 3. Not glad he has to have 4 months of stall rest before it's even worth jogging him up to see how he's doing.  I'm so sad.  I can barely afford board for the one horse so certainly can't board two.  I'm still planning on putting up a shed and some fence here, and building a couple stalls in the old existing barn at my house, and bringing him home, plus a pasture buddy. That will save me some money eventually, once I can get it done. Now  I guess I'll have to get a pasture buddy I can ride.

horsedoc - Sorry to hear about the wing fracture.  Can you post an x-ray of it?  Hope he can have pasture turn out versus stall rest or maybe a small paddock?  I hate it when horses are stuck in stalls.  And good for you for getting him a buddy!

I ordered that hoodie - I could not help myself and yes.....that is one dangerous website but LOOK.......I have saved so much money!  I get the daily emails. Laughing

Went and saw my horse today.  It was cold and I was hurting from the waist down so I didn't feel like riding so I put her in the indoor arena and took a lunge whip in with me.  We started running together and then I had her trotting and cantering in a circle on the outside of me with just the distance of the lunge whip in hand - I was pacing a 5 meter circle and she was in a 15 meter circle.  She could have taken off, changed directions or anything she wanted to but she was right there listening to me cue her to walk, trot, or canter - up and down transitions - both directions.  It was the neatest thing in the world.  No lunge line - no tack on her - just her and me.  She stayed 6" from the end of the lunge whip at all times.

Horse ladies, I belatedly saw 'War Horse' today. I thought it was wonderful. A nice story with a happy ending, great cinematography, and a favourable representation of the talents of horses and their role in WWI. My only complaint was that I would have liked to have seen German and French spoken in the relevant parts, with subtitles, for authenticity. (Easy for me to say as I understand German and French). The horse should win the Oscar for best actor.

I left the cinema smiling. Rating 4 out of 5.

Jancie - cool about the lunging!  My current guy doesn't usually need it and I prefer to ride, whenever possible.  My former guy - well that was a nightmare.  He had "issues".  He would try to come at you in the middle of the lunge circle with teeth bared, etc.  He was not nice!  And would bite or stirke at you if you came into his stall.  Fortunately I sold him, to a kid, no less who he loved because he was the boss.  Go figure.

Racy - I loved War Horse, too.  I thought it was quite well done.  Even though the book and the play were told from the horse's point of view.  Spielberg did a nice job with the cinematography and story.

OK, has anyone watched Luck on HBO?  It debuted last night.  So far, I like it.  Dustin Hoffman is in it.  It's going to be good.  It is somewhat glamorizing Thoroughbred racing.  I was cracking up because in the first episode there is a horse that is colicky and the female vet has to try to remove the blockage from the back end, so they are discussing the horse needing to poop, etc.  I just thought it was slightly funny that they would put that, of all things, in the first show.  It was realistic, though.  Only horse people would get the irony there ;)

And I miss my pony.  DH and I went out of town over the weekend, so I didn't get to ride last week.  May have to double up this week - weather is supposed to be nice.

I heard some disturbing new this weekend.  Since that idiot obama passed a bill legalizing the slaughter of horses, Cargill Meats has a slaughter house that apparently will be supplying Mcdonalds and probably other ff places with "new" meat.  I am completly boycotting fast food from now on.

That is hard to believe that McDonalds would sell horse meat. It isn't eaten by the general population in US, right? Maybe just a rumour intended to incite some reaction.

Now that it is legalized it will be consumed and we probably won't even know it.  These big corps are always trying to save a buck.  Since it is now legal I assume their will be equine meat in the grocery stores too. By law, not that corps follow the law, the meat is supposed to be labeled as such.  I hope their are many boycotts for mcdonalds and other places. I would rather eat bark and leaves than a horse.  Obama is an idiot, he better NOT get re elected. I did not votre for him anyway but he is a piece of sh*t.

SuperSally - I use lunging as a training tool - not to get the bucks out but more to get my horse to focus and respond to me.  Yesterday we tried it again but she was more concerned about the snow falling off the roof than anything else.  She wanted to RUN and I let her run and run and run.  Since the footing outside is snowy and icey the horses don't run so much out there so it was nice to be able to allow her to stretch her legs totally.

I am leaving for Dallas on Friday and will be gone 12 days.  I have a super packed trip this time.  I am so going to miss my horse!

Cheryl - I hadn't heard about horse meat being legalized.  Now I am ticked off royally!

I don't eat FF very much at all and now for sure I am going to avoid it.  But what about restaurants like Chili's etc, I wonder if they are going to include horse meat in their burgers.  What about meat enchiladas - another thing to be concerned about?

Jancie, I don't know about other places, but if the price is right then I am sure they will follow.  In the mean time I am on the hunt for a trail horse.  I have recon surgery coming up in March but still looking for my horse.  Any one have any thoughts on Appaloosa's? I love the coloring but have read that they can be testy and stubborn. Anyone know?

Before everyone starts panicking about horse slaughter, or assuming fast food chains will suddenly be serving horsemeat, or even that horsemeat will be legal for human consumption in the US, please consider the fact that until just a few years ago, horse slaughter WAS legal in the US.

Before the recent bill, THOUSANDS of horses in the US were still being sold to slaughter - the difference was, these horses were transported to Mexico or Canada, and especially in Mexico, shipped, "maintained", and slaughtered without basic regulations ensuring humane treatment.

I'm pretty sure that no one here on this Horse Women thread LIKES horse slaughter, and I doubt anyone here wants to eat horsemeat. I'd like to even think that my sisters here a) don't indiscriminately breed anything with testicles or a uterus, b) care for their retirees forever, and c) humanely euthanize when the time comes. That's how to prevent horse slaughter.

Spreading half-truths and spin created by the Republican propaganda machine isn't going to help the horses. And honestly? When election time comes, I'll take domestic (humane) horse slaughter over losing my reproductive rights, the right to marry whomever I choose, and my general sense of personal freedom any time, thanks. And this is coming from someone whose personal slaughter rescue/rehabs approaches the triple digits.

Cheryl, if I haven't totally alienated you with my last message, I will say that I'm a BIG fan of the Appaloosas. I would certainly buy based on the temperament of the horse, not the color, but there are lots of apps out there who are ideal for trail riding/pleasure. I have had a number in my barn, ranging from nice USEF A-Rated Hunters to lesson ponies. My favorite pony of all time was an App who could not only jump anything in front of her, she was my absolute favorite animal out on the trails ever, bar none. Safe as could be, unflappable, sure-footed, and got me home more than once when I'd totally gotten us lost. Love the Apps!

Of course, there is a reason Apps have the stubborn rep, just as there is a reason Arabs have the flighty rep and TBs have the hot rep. Doesn't mean this is true for all horses of the breed, by any means. If you are clear on what your goals are and don't get sucked in by pretty spots alone, I bet you can find an App that is great on the trails. Personally I LOVE the Sunbeach Honky Tonk offspring - you can find a number of them for sale online.

PLEASE- no political discussions here. I come here to read nice things, not debate political agendas.

I am getting back into sidesaddle. Pulled out all my vintage habits, rode two of my equines ss and am going to a clinic with a friend next month.

I agree Heidi, and sorry if I offended with my rant...Had previously ignored Obama slaughter comments on this thread but just couldn't deal with the one-sided commentary and blatant misinformation. Huh, who would have thought that a horse topic I started would be the only place on these boards I've ever been involved in conflict w others, and more than once! Think I'll politely bow out of participating further here...Best to my fellow horse ladies.

Can't believe I missed this thread! And I was having a crappy day to.

I live on a small horse farm in Sweden and these days me and Moon are zooming aroung the neighboring woods getting to know each other. Lots of elk, hare, grouse and even the odd lynx around here. He looks something like this and is sure the most effective rehab-horse I have ever met.

Banba - welcome to our thread!  Thanks for the picture.  That is so amazing that you get to see wildlife.  I'd love to see any wildlife pics you have, too.  What is your weather like there now?  Do you ride through the snow?  Is Moon a pony or horse?  The ones in the pic look like they might be ponies.  I love the blonde mane and tail on a chestnut, one of my fave color combos.

Jancie - what are you coming to Dallas for?  You will be here 12 days?  Where are you staying?  Maybe we can meet for coffee or something.  I know you said you have a busy trip, but I'd love to meet another fellow BC sister and horse woman!  I forget about working around snow and ice with horses living here.

Cheryl - As you are doing in your horse search, please take the time to research topics that might be offensive or controversial here before posting.  And I know your heart is in the right place, but please realize that not everyone feels the same about political issues and that's ok.  Appies I have known have been solid citizens, perfect for trail riding.

BlueCG - The rant is ok.  No offense taken.  I understand you couldn't bypass an opportunity to educate about a situation on which you have knowledge and experience.  Please don't leave us, I for one, do not want to not hear from you after your passionate response.  You did start this thread with the intention of having horses in common, let's go back to that.

HeidiToo - Thanks for the reminder that this is not meant to be a political forum.  We are here to discuss nice things and because we love horses.  So impressed with you riding side saddle.  I'm sure it's like a lot of other things, once you know how to do it it's not so intimidating.

Ok, done taking you girls to task and playing mediator.  I did not mean any offense wtih my comments, either.  To each his own, I say!  I know two things - we have all been touched by BC and we all love horses, I will keep my focus on that.

Sorry for political rant but I am not misinformed and your president did this. I am all for humane euthinasia if needed but not for poor horses standing in crowded pens with no food or water so that someone's screaming kid can have a cheeseburger.
