Happy  Bday, Barb!!!  Lovely flowers for a lovely lady.  :-)

Shameful that some don't pay their taxes.  There are a bunch of people throughout the federal gov't that owe huge amounts in back taxes.  I wonder what their story is?  Do they still owe it, but are making payments to the IRS?  I can't believe that it's known and the IRS is doing nothing about it.

And since I didn't say it, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Barb!

Interesting political day in Florida. It's funny how the north and south in the state always vote differently, no matter what the party is, isn't it?

Scoot, are you winning big yet?

BTW, threadmates, Komen has just cut off funding to some Planned Parenthood organizations claiming it is because Planned Parenthood is under investigation in Congress. PP has offered countless women breast care. I never used either organization. I side with PP and say Komen sucketh!!

    Go to this AP article:

Komen's not getting another dime of my money.  I donated to Planned Parenthood instead.

Happy belated birthday Barbara ... hope it was a good one!!

Komen has always seemed to me to 'use' breast cancer as a fundraising and marketing tool rather than seriously funding research or providing any services to breast cancer patients.  Quite a few people making sky high salaries off it too.  This was just the final straw for me.  I've pretty much kept my mouth shut before but I'm making sure that nobody I know thinks they are doing a good thing for me by donating to Komen ... or buying all the pink ribbon crap.

My daughter and most all of her friends used Planned Parenthood in their younger days ... and none of them had abortions either.  They were comfortable there and preferred it even if they could go to  family doctors instead.  And they got good information from concerned and caring doctors.   I will always support PP.  So if Komen wants to get in a spitting contest with them it's no contest as far as I'm concerned.

I was surprised at the number of federal and congressional employees who owe back taxes.  I think the reason you are seeing the amounts sitting there for awhile is because IRS has to go through the courts and get judgements to collect and that takes time.  Some are probably being disputed also.  But eventually ... after they get that court order ... there will be payroll garnishments to collect.

One of the more important roles that PP plays is Women's sexual health education.  I've been reading several articles about the lack of sex education in many US school districts (oh, pardon me, other than "abstinence" education, which isn't education at all, IMO).  It's become apparent that since groups of parents in these school districts, especially in the southern states, have objected to any form of sex education in schools, the numbers of teen pregnancies has steadily risen.

The opposite is true here in Canada, where sex education starts as early as 5th grade.  In fact, school curriculum experts are worried that 5th grade is too late, and that students who mature earlier are at risk, re pregnancy, STDs etc.

    Laughing

So called sex education in this country is a joke in too many places.  And those places tend to be the places with the highest unwed teen birthrates.  Who would ever have guessed that result huh Tongue out

Do folks have any, ANY idea about how it damages the nation as a whole to keep their children and young adults uneducated, and unaware of the facts of life?  When they don't learn from the experts, they pick up stuff from their peers, who are as uneducated as they.  I presume that the parents who don't want their little ones to be "dirtied" by any talk of sex are also not prepared to do it themselves (no doubt because they, too, haven't a clue).  I declare, I do despair.......

Linda ... I also despair of the situation in my community.  We have an unemployment rate of 24% AND the highest rate of unwed mothers at any high school in the state.  Yep .. that's right, my town's high school has more pregnant young girls than any other high school in this state.   It's a crying shame.

There isn't a Planned Parenthood in my area.  They do have a free clinic however for the uninsured and poor people.  They do a good job of breast cancer screening, as my cancer was screened at the free clinic five years ago.

I live in the Bible belt so I doubt that things will improve anytime soon.

And on a happy note .. I got weighed at my PCP appointment this morning and I've lost 26 1/2 pounds.  I'm so excited.  I had no idea I'd lost that much weight.

Hope everyone is having a good day.

    Bren

Wow, Bren, over 26 pounds!  That's fantastic, but... Listen girl, if you stand sideways and drink tomato juice, folks will think you're a thermometer!

PP has announced it has ALREADY received more donations since the Komen announcement than they get in annual grants from Komen!  YES, YES, YES.

I'm still crying, PP does breast cancer screening, mammgrams for women who can NOT AFFORD to get them any other way.  WHY, oh WHY, is it always the poorest women who seem to have to carry the hardest burdens, under the guise of someone else's political agenda...

Over here, women were given a $5,000 grant when they gave birth - that did a lot to increase the teen pregnancy rate - can you believe it???

I'm tired again!! Spent ages looking for Poppy to come in last night. Little witch was down the street and finally came home in response to my calls. I can't blame her, she had been cooped up so long with the rain.

    WTG, Bren!!

I used PP back when I was a penniless musician and I thank God I had them to go to. They not only gave me PAP exams an Rx's for BC pills, they also offered counseling.

Well it's a BIG glass of wine for me tonight. My second bout of bronchitis since CHRISTMAS got me a prescription for a new antibiotic and one for a steroid.(after i dealt with the byotch at the doctor's office. She asked me what I wanted the doctor to do...umm...be the doctor, don't expect me to be it)  No drinking on the steroids. They make me crazy enough. I have to start them in the morning so all my drinks will be virtual after tonight, at least for a week.

Congrats, BrenI! Wow, that is an achievement. You should be really proud. Hope you celebrate.

    Toasting to Bren.

The most active Komen/PP thread has been taken off the Active Topics list. I can find a justification for what was done to us, but that move is....what it is.

Over and out, with a G&T iced and sliced

The whole thing is not about abortion but to some everything is about anti-abortion.  Poor women doing without medical resources cannot compete for their attention.  I'm not going to argue with them ... it's a waste of time.  Komen's latest idiocy sucks.  I will not donate to them ... I will not buy any product with the Komen pink ribbon on it.  I have donated to Planned Parenthood and will do so again shortly.  That is my bottom line and all the anti-abortion side issue screaming in the world won't change that.

Glad to see you rosemary ... ugh about the bronchitis again.  Enjoy the wine while you can.

    Bren ... you go girl!

Athena ... not surprised.  Anything else I would like to say would not be prudent :)

Barbara ... tomorrow is Friday.  Does that help??

Chiming in here to say that Ativan has been my good friend since the news broke yesterday about PP - I wasn't surprised I've never understood the "pink" crap that Komen peddles - when I had my diagnosis and needed help they didn't even answer the plea - my help came from a private fund in California and from the hospital foundation where I lived in South Carolina - sadly my late sister's family ran and walked for the cure and donated heavily but since she passed they've given exclusively to the hospice that took care of her in the final days - honestly Komen isn't giving enough to research anyway they are just a giant pink publicity machine and out of touch with reality - we are all AWARE of bc - now we need a cure!
