IF IDC is hormone positive does that mean DCIS is too?
I had multifocal DCIS (>3cm) and multifocal IDC (largest 2mm). I was diagnosed in July 2011. My IDC was strongly hormone positive...but my DCIS (Grade 2) was not tested or reviewed by either of the two pathology departments I went to for consults. Am I incorrect to assume my DCIS would have been hormone positive also? I had a double mastectomy w/alloderm reconstruction, total hysterectomy and am now on Arimidex. I am 41. My Oncotype Dx was 8. I am concerned about DCIS remnants after the mastectomy as I keep finding post-mastectomy lumps. Any information would be appreciated!

Thank you for your reply! Your info helps. Yes...I am having the lump removed Tuesday...it is my third. My surgeon feels it is more scar tissue...I hope so.

Hi there - We have a similar diagnosis. I was always told the same....IDC trumps any DCIS. They acknowledge it on path reports and what not, but not when it comes to treatment. Another question......did you have one step Alloderm reconstruction by any chance? Get back to me when you can and keep us posted on what you find out....

I will update tomorrow the surgeon's thoughts and then the final results when I get them. Thank you.

Wildrumara...I had Alloderm, Expander then Exchange. Honestly, they look great...but I feel the two bumps I had biopsied last month were where the alloderm met the expander. The current lump is right next to original open biopsy cancer location scar.

Update from biopsy...
My surgeon removed what he said looked like fatty tissue...and maybe some breast tissue...he did not see anything alarming but obviously we have to wait for the actual pathology. I have not looked yet at the new scar...but it is pretty sore!

Thank you again for your posts. My pathology was benign (and no breast tissue)...it actually came back Thursday which was quicker than I expected. I am very thankful...sore still with some hard areas near the incision...but very happy the results came prior to the weekend.

4my3kids, hope you don't mind if I ask, did you have the hysterectomy to prevent recurrence? Or to prevent pelvic area cancers. I have read of having an oopherectomy to stop the production of hormones for hormone receptive cancers. If hysterectomy is helpful, I would like to find out more... Any means of avoiding more cancer and being around to see my daughter grow up is a consideration for me!

Jenlee, my IDC was strongly estrogen and progesterone postive and my breast surgeon told me to consider a hysterectomy within a year of my mastectomy...but I also had ovarian cysts one of which was complex and hanging around. One of the oncologists I saw for a second opinon said get your ovaries out...you do not want to play around with the cyst issues...so having heard that twice I did it. I am 41...and I can't say I feel 100 percent like my old self...but maybe 85. I like knowing it may improve my chances but there is no proof how much...but for me it was the right decision due to the age of my youngest child and my age. Please send me a message with any questions.

Thank you...I will never get sick of hearing the word benign.
