    barbe, I was a little confused too about the high 5, sometimes people just amaze me. He gave me his phone number cause I have to call him to tell him when I get his daughter's bag done, but he also said I could call if I wanted to discuss my dx with him since he is a doctor. He is a real joker. He then asked if I was going to fix the bag before getting radiation or after. 

    I still feel like life is so much up in the air. I really have no idea what to tell people when they ask when their shoes might be ready. This Monday appt is taking a long time to get here.

    BarbaraA, I am really blessed to love what I do. Fixing things is fun for me. The puzzle of taking something apart and then putting it back together so it is better is just so gratifying. Plus I moved the business into the basement of my house when my son was a year old. So I could be 2 places at once, work and home. I thought I would move it back to town when the kids got older, but it is so convienent.

    Having said that not being able to fix me is really frustrating.

    im so amzed at all the ladies here that can sew!!! i used to, but my confidence has really ebbed now. im now hand sewing things.. ridiculous. im determined to oull out the "new " machine i bought 3 yrs ago, and use it.. pray i don't run over my own fingerd, ewhich is what im most afrad of! it'll be a few weekas, fotta get the xma s decorations down 1st lol

       im hand sewing the masactomy pockets into camis, and new foam foobs to out n the,.. i figure when i get enough confidence, i can run them thru with the machine!!!so far, so good.......3jays

    Wow, 3jays, I am 'sewing-challenged', including the much needed skill of sewing on buttons. When one goes, it is off to Goodwill. I am such a moron!

    nah, not a moron.. someone not desperate enough to learn.. you CAN send them out to be tailored, etc.. i did that, when i was in tx.. still send out pants to be taken upo in the waist crotch.. i'm so short nothing fitds right, and i don't dare do them myself!hahaha.praying for a new job for you, barbara...3jays

    I grew up in a home where if you didn't sew by the time you started 5th grade you went naked! Modesty prevailed and I learned how to sew.  My mother was an excellent seamstress and I still remember my first sewing machine, I think I was about 5. It was a hand crank little Singer and only did a chain stitch.  I found it a few years ago and my DD#2 took it!  I still had all the parts and the little sewing book with projects to do and even found the original box and all were in very good condition except the thread which was rotten and fell all to peices.  I told DD#2 she better take care of that so her DDs(#1-4) could take it away from her one day.

    BarbA - I can show you how to sew on a button and even thread a needle. You are not a moron, that is just a skill you have not learned.  Do I need to bring one of my machines when I come to visit you? ;-)  Just kidding.  Love you gal.

    3jays - Don't worry about sewing your fingers with the machine - I do that all the time, you won't feel a thing. ;-)  Seriously, if you are concerned they now make sewing gloves that help you handle the material better so that you won't have it slipping and cause you to sew through your fingers. Just check at any fabric store or craft store that sell sewing notions.

    Have sewing I must get on with and loads of patchwork/quilting projects waiting for winter. Like you Amy I had to learn to sew if I wanted new clothes, well almost. My favourite dresses were those handed down from my American cousin. It was a really big thing to get a parcel from the US and the clothes were different.

    Must so and get dressed, having a lovely lazy Saturday morning. Going to see DD1 so she can help with my new phone.

    Our calendar this year is "Islands", and I am plotting some escape.

    We did get rain - yippee for the fact that it's cold and wet and dreary. We desperately need 40 days and 40 nights to get the forests a good drink... but, you still got me.  I was doing ok ....

    AJ, I liked your Singer story.  We still have DH's grandma's old hand-crank, with a shuttle instead of bobbin. It's a 'little' portable with a wood carrying case - and it tough enough it once sewed new soles on old moccasins, but still sews fine fabrics too.  That and my old White treadle are work horses for sure, and the only mechanical things I've ever been able to take apart and put back together (I say my technical skills peaked at the wheel.) 

    Mac, I sure wish you lived closer - a good leather repair person is hard to find!

    We were inspired by McCutcheon back in the late 70s/early 80s (we still have our old vinyl autographed albums, and still play them), then DH built himself a hammered dulcimer in the early 80s based on plans from the Smithsonian (American Heritage instrument...) Hammered dulcimers are so fun, but have certainly evolved during the past couple of decades. 

    Google Sierra Nevada Brewery Big Room Chico - it's about 45 mi from us, and well worth the trip.  

    Last week was the bluegrass group "The Boxcars" -  that was some good music too. 

    DH 'retired' a few months ago, and our pace has changed in really good ways.  Let the dance begin.

    good to hear from everyone.. AJ: i really am afraid, with the le, and neuropathy.. i have gardening loves, ones to wash the dishes, so why not for sewing??? gonna ck them out.....3jays

    Love the sewing stories. All I can do is sew on a button, and I do that pretty badly. Don't ever look at the mass of thread knotted at the back! I guess my "skill" is genetic. I remember as a young girl being so jealous of my friends' moms who could sew doll clothes for their daughters. My own daughter doesn't even do buttons, so she sends me all her husband's shirts and sons' clothes to sew on buttons. Now my eyesight is so bad, I've been using a needle as large as an icepick! I've seen a "magic needle" advertised on TV where the thread just snaps on. Worth getting?

    WW, I even took sewing in Home Economics in 9th grade. Got an A in cooking and a D in sewing (and I think she was being generous.)

    don't bother with the as seen on tv version needle.. its huge, and onky made to sew patches on, or buttons.. not for any kind of hand sewing. i already returned mine!..3jays

    BarbA - I would be up to learning your "Liars Poker" when I come that direction. 

    3jays - I use the sewing gloves since I do not have feeling in the tips of my fingers and they work great for me.

    whisper - there are 2 type of self- threading needles.  One threads from the top and one threads from the side. The ones that threat from the top work better than the one that thread on the side.  The TV ones are the one that thread on the side. The other ones you can find at any sewing store that sell sewing nothins. There is also a little tool that you stick a needle in and it threads it for you. Sorry I do not remember what it is called.

    Alyson - I too have a lot of quilting to do and more quilts to make along with a ton of smaller project to ew.

    All of you who can sew, actually know how to thread a machine and all that, amaze me!  I was horrible in 10th grade home economics but was forced to take it as a last resort.  Sewing  talent must not be hereditary either.  Although my mother didn't sew, her sister was a very talented seamstress and had quite a business with it.  My other aunts (Dad's side) both could sew, and crochet, and even tat.  DH's mother crocheted with yarn, but my aunts did it with the fine thread and I have many of their pieces, since neither of them ever married. I can sew on a button, and maybe hem a little but that's it!   But hey, I can cook!

    I can cook, too Kathy but I can also crochet, though I haven't done that in some time. Maybe I should start back up. My step daughter is coming Thursday from Seattle and I can't wait! I haven't seen here in maybe 8+ years.

    Morning lively ladies.

    Did I hear from a little bird that its someones birthday - Barbara???

    This lively lady is a nervous one waiting to go for her five year mammo and to see BS. Thought I had a very relaxed attitude until early this morning when I woke and started to worry.  Haven't even told DDs that I am going as they would insist on coming, I know they worry. I will talk to the BS about my shoulder and get her recommendations.

    Must get moving as I need petrol in my car.

    My little tablet is an Android and painfully slow, but when I'm bedridden it's all I've got. One of the problems is that when I type "and", it turns it into "Android"!!!! Sassy little Nexxtbook!!
