Has anyone else ever had increased clotting do to BC? Recently had 3cm blood clot removed from right atrium of heart. Cardiologist feels BC may have caused clot and now I am on Cumadin(sp) possibly for the rest of my life.

Hi Lynn, I don't think BC itself can cause a blood clot but some of the meds used to treat it can.  Good luck with your treatments.

Tamox increases the risk of clots and any surgery can increase the risk. There are genetic factors that can indicate whether you are predisposed to clots. The Factor V Leiden is found in about 1 in 6 Caucasian people (don't know the rates for others). It seems like this is rarely discussed or tested (I had to insist on a test) but FYI.

BTW, my MO is also a hematologist (deals with blood cancers). Maybe someone with both specialities might be a good choice for you???

Is it dangerous to talk about that topic because cancer is more dangerous than other diseases.

I had a DVT a few weeks before my breast cancer diagnosis. I was put on Lovenox and a few months of Coumadin.  I found out that I do have the Leiden Factor V mutation.  My surgeon and hematologist told me that active cancer is another risk factor for blood clots (cancer can increase platelet production).  I was put on Lovenox for 2 weeks following BMX and told I will have to avoid tamoxifen.  I also have an oncologist hematologist.  At this point I am not on daily Coumadin - only for long haul travel and surgery.

Halfway thru chemo I was coughing like crazy and couldn't stand for long and had shortness of breath...my ONC ordered a lung MRI and it turned out I have Pulmonary Embolism. I am self injecting Fragmin (blood thinner) for 6 months now...I am done next month and according the the Hematologist, it was chemo induced. He says I don't need to take anymore blood thinners after the six months. It sure did the trick as I feel so much better. I also take Arimidex with less chance of clots than Tamoxifen.
