Good Morning!  Back from my cruise and it looks like I'll have a lot of reading to do to catch up on what happened while I was away.

Shelia I love your posts..one makes me wish I was back on the cruise, and the other makes me wish I'd thought of that with the kids in the next cabin who partied every night into the wee hours.  Nothing would make them shut up and stop slamming the doors!  They were out on the balcony drinking and yelling...now I know how people fall overboard!  In spite of all that, we still had a great time.  The entertainment was like being in Las Vegas, and the food was excellent.  We had a blast.

Welcome Sharon...you'll have a lot of support here, and fun too!

Glad everyone made it through the New Year.  Hoping 2012 is going to be a good one for all!

Hi Sierra.....Ducky doesn't discriminate if you are not 70 yet.

I'm not 70 either. To me the sense of humor of my friends on this thread makes me laugh and sometimes bad things happen then we all hug each other.

    Welcome

Welcome Sierra!  You will enjoy this thread...lots of love and support from some wonderful women.

Just returned from my PCP app't and now I have app't for heart echo and then app't with cardiologist to review my heart issues.  Also elevated liver enzymes which is new because last year they were fine, so now I have to repeat those tests.  All this and I'm supposed to be scheduled for rads soon.  This is starting to get me down.  I haven't seen so many doctors in my entire life as I have these last two months!  Stop the train....I want off!!

Hi Girls, I'm writing in on behalf of my Mom, Marie.  She's 81.  Just diagnosed IDC.  She's very old school, does not want a second opinion, does not ask questions.  She's scheduled for a double masectomy and I'm not sure what will happen afterward as she has left me and my five siblings out of the loop.  I'm hoping and praying for the best.  I'm torn between respecting her wishes and my need to make sure that she is fully informed.  At 81yrs old, she deserves to call the shots.

Thank you for sharing your experiences as they have already helped so much.  God bless you and your larger than life hearts.

Walkinggrace...................I am 76...............I didn't get a 2nd opinion, but only because I was at a well known Breast Cancer Center close to Phila...............I immediately fell in love with the BS, but only becauae he made me feel like everything was going to be ok............it was the confidence he had in himself, that gave me the confidence I needed to stay with him, and make it thorugh the ordeal

He and his office took care of everything for me, even down to having a 2 hour conference before any decisions were made, as to what route we would take..........I began saying "take them both, its decoration at my age and I don't need them anymore.....................He recommended something different, and I trusted him, and my family, and did the complete opposite of my "first plan"

I am shocked that the BS your mother has, has not spoken to all of you as a family.........mine did...........................my BS took care of all appts. chossing my MO, RO, date of surgery, and I trusted him.......................He was by my side throughout, and even did my biopsy, and did not leave my side then either.

Yes you should respect your Mother's wishes, but you should also be there for her Dr. appts. so that you can be fully informed......................I have 6 childrens, and they were all at every meeting we had........................they heard things I never heard............................also, there is no  way your Mom will remember all that she is told..................insist, and let her know you want to be by her side throughout, and be a 2nd set of ears for her.................

    Good luck............

my friend is fighting ccancer for 27 yrs.refuses a 2nd opinion.

everyone is different. It should be up to her BUT somehow the family has a lot to say.

This is a tough call.Listen to the sistas.bring a tape recorder.you will never remember everything.that is the first thing the sistas told me.They also told me second opinion before i cut.i already had 2 cuts before i got here with dr#1.

I wish you the best of luck.come often.ask a lot of questions

and dont forget that tape recorder.I just hope you didnt do anything yet.huggggggggs K

Good evening ladies,  I am here searching for answers for my 74 year old mother who is battling recurrent triple negative breast cancer. She was recently told she has brain mets and they are suggesting Whole Brain Radiation.  Does anyone in this forum have any experience with this?  I just want to give my Mom as much information as I can provide before she is set to start her treatments in 3 days.  As you all well know, when you are sitting in the office and they tell you the results that is one shock, then they jump right into what they can do to try and halt it.  Mom had the face mask made yesterday, but she is so scared and so am I.  I feel if we jump into this on Tuesday that it might be the beginning of a quick decline.  She actually FEELS FINE right now but yes she is presenting with some slight vision problems which one of the tumors is probably causing.  But she has energy and was recently in rehab to help her gain her strength back in her legs after just finishing up radiation of the mass on her spine.  She is NOT in pain right now.She lives alone with her dog and 2 cats.  She is relatively independent and likes that.  IF anyone can shed some words of wisdom I would be most grateful.  Thank you for letting me post here.

Just checking in to say hi to everyone!  Busy week..doctor app'ts with a different RO to see about getting partial breast radiation which is only 5 days.  Guess what...my boobs may be too small!  And all this time I though I had nice boobs!  Oh well...I'll find out Monday when they do the scan.  App't for echo cardiogram went well....I asked "am I going to live" to which the tech answered..."yes...until you die"..guess I asked for that!  My liver enzyme test came back normal this time around, so that's another worry off my mind.  Now if I could just get rid of these hot flashes!!  Imagine, going through menopause at 71...who would have thought!

walkingrace:  Good luck with your Mom...she sounds fiesty like me!  Likes to call the shots and probably doesn't want to upset her children.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!  Weather is beautiful here in Florida!

I'm so confused. I had a lumpectomy and SNB on Jan 4. The margins were too close, so I'm going to have to have more surgery. My BS said my stage is so early that I probably won't have to take hormone therapy, just rads. I saw the Onc today and he said I should have 5 years of Arimidex and probably won't need rads because I'm over 70.. I see the Rad Onc on Thur, so will hear what he thinks. I think I should do one or the other, especially since the margins weren't good. So I have to decide between a mishapen soft breast and a mishapen hard breast and whether rads would be worse than 5 years of bone & joint pain. I'm curious whether age was mentioned in deciding what treatment would be best for others over 70 on this thread. The no rads over 70 study had a fairly large number of women, but it was only one study.

Wren44:  I'm 71, and although I had the study in my hand, regarding over 70 women not benefiting from rads, all of my doctors, BS, RO, MO told me that I need the radiation to make sure that any stray cells are taken care of.  They all said the study is based on women who are frail and weak and might not be able to withstand surgery, and might not live another ten years.  If you don't fit into that category then you should probably consider rads.  I thought long and hard about it, and have decided that I am going to do a short term rads program...either one week or three week...whichever I qualify for, and then I have options on the hormone therapy.  As my onc said...I could try it, and if I didn't like it, I could stop.

I have changed my diet to one of fresh fruits and veggies and protein.  I have cut out all starches and sugars that feed cancer.  I am juicing and taking supplements.  All of this gives an additional benefit to prevent bc recurrence.

Welcome to the thread...I pray you come to a decision that you are comfortable with.
