Any diagnosed with IDC Grade 1, Stage IIa,
Just wanting to know if anyone had or has this type of diagnosis? Doctor says that if you had to choose this was the best type to have. No feeling warm and fuzzy about that or any type or kind. I just would like to know someone else's experience and treatments and if your prognosis was good if you had a mastectomy with reconstruction. This would help me understand what to look forward too.
IDC 4.2cm Stage IIa, Grade 1, ER+, PR+, HER2-. No spread, or axillery spread, or vasicular invasion.

Hello Chase2, and welcome to BCO. Until other members post replies about their own experiences, you can read more about what to expect with IDC on the main Breastcancer.org site in the section called IDC: Invasive Ductal Carcinoma.
Here on the forums, you might also want to connect with the ladies on the IDC forum at this link.

Chase...I have the same Dx...My BS told me I had a wussy cancer...come to find out he tells a lot of women that. I had a lumpectomy. My BS is all about saving the breast no matter what. My cancer is on the outside so at least I dont look like a freak with one breast clearly larger than the other. I also had 33 rounds of rads. Not a big deal at all; burning and not some lung irritation but other than that not too bad. Taking Armidex to prevent recurrence. No SEffects from that at all. Oncologist said I would have already had issues if I am going to have them given I have been taking the drug for months. I did have a micromet in a node but had the oncotype test done. Score came back at 11 so oncologist said rads not chemo. So relieved. Good luck..

I was Stage 11a due to lymph node involvement rather than tumor size and I was also Grade 1. My BS, MO, and I all thought I should have chemo after the SNB was positive so I did not have the Oncotype test. I asked about chemo for Grade 1 and my MO said that chemo killed fast growing cells and even Grade 1 cells grew at a faster rate than normal cells. No one thought of my Grade 1 as "wussy." The fact that it spread to a lymph node got everyone's attention. All I can say is that I have absolutely no regrets about choosing chemo. I also had a lumpectomy and rads and my prognosis is good. If I were to change anything, it would be to have had an MX and forgo rads. Wishing you all the best, Chase2.

I'm considered IIa because of positive nodes even though my tumor is a smaller grade 1. My oncotype came back 4. I was given percentages of reoccurence & the decision was left to me on Chemo. I believe that lumpectomy & MX are the same when it comes to prognosis. I did the BMX(I had bialateral tumors, the other was a grade 1 stage 1). It had more to do with my decreasing tolerance for mamograms(ineffective) & having had too many biopsies. Also, both of my tumors were smaller on my final pathology report than on ultrasound or MRI. Good luck.

My Stage I went to Stage IIa after surgery, due to micromets in 2 nodes. Even so, because the tumor was smaller than expected (1.3 cm.) and I got a 14 on the Oncotype Dx, MO recommended no chemo. The research indicates that when a score is low, one does not benefit from chemo. But some docs do not put as much credence in the Oncotype Score or don't even order it if any lymph mets are found. Mine did, and I'm glad that my immune system will be preserved, especially if chemo would not benefit me. We're all different though and those who get chemo have peace of mind knowing they threw the kitchen sink at it.
Best wishes!

In reading your post... have you not yet had surgery?
After a needle core biopsy, I was diagnosed with stage 1 grade 1 IDC. Like you, I was not happy, but also knew it could be worse!
After the MRI - I was moved to stage 3 as the tumor appeared to be on my chest wall and 4 nodes looked invaded. Also, two other tumors were discovered.
I opted for a double mast with expanders placed. I made sure both the surgeon and PS understood that if clean margins were NOT obtained, no expanders (as radiation would be needed).
I woke from surgery 2 weeks ago with expanders and lots of pain! I do not regret my choice for the double... here is why:
They removed 32 nodes, as they were sure the cancer was there... however, the pathology showed no lymph invasion. The other two tumors were indeed cancer, but nothing was on the chest wall! I went back to stage 1. My other breast which looked perfectly clear had pre-cancer cells.
Depiste all the good news, I am told that chemo is still needed as my tumor was over 1cm. I am waiting for the results of the Oncotype DX to help me determine if chemo is really right for me.
I am sure there are a lot of stories like mine out there, and getting news with the word CANCER in it totally sucks! But remember, until the final pathology comes in, it is very hard to plan!
I will pray for you to recover quickly and have amazing labs...

Thank You, for the reply. Per the MRI and CT Scan no spread, I was Diagnosised 11/27/11 I have start Chemo on 12/30/11 I am scheduled for 4 treatments. I will have surgery either 30 days after 4th treatment or sooner depending how Chemo treats the tumor. I just don't know what to do. BC runs in my mothers side of the family. I am done with having children and not fond of my breast and don't want to keep looking over my shoulder every 6 months waiting for the next find. I am considering a MX with reconstruction after only and only if Rads are not needed. I know I will not know if lymph nodes are affected until surgery. I hope all is well for you. Please let me know how your Chemo experience is. The 1st round was not to bad, except for the tiredness for the first 5 days. Not looking forward to the hair lose, which has not happen yet, but I am ready with a wig and hats. Please let me know how you are thoughts and prayers for all.
