December 2011 Surgeries - want to wait together?

hi there, 4 days out and doing quite ok. Drains came out yesterday and apparently that's quite quick. Pain hasn't been much of an issue. I have been so tired though. I slept for 5 hours this afternoon, I just seemed to hit a wall in terms of massive fatique. Tomorrow I get to shower!!! I wasn't allowed to get any of the dressing wet for 4 days so I have just been topping and tailin with the sponge bath. I just cannot wait to wash my hair. I know I will feel like a new person tomorrow. I have to wait until next Tuesday to get the final results from my BS, but I feel positive that everything is contained and that this was caught early. Fingers crossed and love to all facing their surgery. Kate x

My previous hospital gave me very specific pre-op shower instructions. This one hasn't (but did give me two chlorhexidine gluconate sponges when I asked). Getting to the hospital for 6:00 and having a shower first is a pain, but I can suck it up. But I don't really want to wash my hair the morning of surgery and go outside in the freezing cold. Was anyone told that washing the hair BOTH the night before AND the morning of was mandatory? Nobody is going to cut on my head and I presume I'm wearing a paper hat. I don't even think I had to wash my hair the morning of surgery ON my head, come to think of it. (I know I can try to find out from the hospital, but I'd first have to figure out who to ask.)

Hi Teresa....hope your BS appt goes well with good news! Do you know what type of nipple reconstruction you will be doing? My PS seems to only discuss the nipple "tatooing". I have not researched this issue since it was the day prior to my surgery that I agreed to have my right nipple removed....really did not want to go there, but, also did not want to have the chance of going back into surgery within a few weeks if my pathology was not good. I have a BS appt, tomorrow, and am expecting to get my last 2 drains removed and to discuss my final pathology which I am hoping was good enough to avoid radiation. Next day back to the PS....more doctor appts in the last 3 months than I have had in the last 15 years! God speed to you, and all the women, fighting breast cancer.

Hi Teresa....hope your BS appt goes well with good news. I have my BS appt, tomorrow, and my last 2 drains removed and a discussion of my final pathology. What type of nipple reconstruction do you think you will do? My PS has only mentioned the "nipple tatooing". God Speed to you, and all the wonderful women on this site, who are fighting breast cancer.

Kam- that is a great story; way to go Zappos! That showed some real compassion.
-
AussieKate- It sounds like you are doing great to me. I had drains for two weeks. At 4 days you should be feeling pretty tired; it is a big insult to your body. That first shower really makes a big difference in how you feel. Take it easy and it will get better!

Had my surgery on Monday...it went very well. No pain from everything that had to be done pre surgery, and very little pain after the surgery. It was a long night in the hospital, and I couldnt wait to get out of there today. Good to be home. I get my final pathology report on Thursday or Friday, and hoping for negative SN.
Good luck to everyone who is going in for surgery the remainder of this week! Hopefully yours will go as well as mine did.

Hi, sisters. My love and best wishes to you all. I was diagnosed November 23 (Happy Thanksgiving) and am scheduled for BMX with tissue expanders on Dec 20 (Merry Christmas). No surprise that I'm crazy with worry and stressed about my job (I run a small non-profit with only one other FT employee). But at least I have friends who have been through this and survived who help my spirits, and now I've found you. I'm opting for BMX because I want to reduce me worry as much as possible. And as barely a 34B, my reconstruction/implants may be an upgrade.
-
Ann Top: Sorry you're here, but you will receive lots of comfort and support. Good luck on your upcoming surgery. It is much more complicated than mine, but I'm sure it will go well for you.

Final pathology report is in: NO evidence of invasive cancer!!! In fact, there is no evidence of the IDC that was reported after my core needle biopsy on September 12th.
I asked the Breast Care Coordinator about it, and she really didn't have an explanation other than maybe it was so tiny, the biopsy got it all? I'm going with God's healing hand and answered prayers. Will meet the Oncologist on Dec. 30th to discuss the estrogen-inhibitor, but as of this morning - no chemo, no rads.
Today was first Post-Op appt. BS was concerned that I'm still on Norco, PS said no big deal. He said a week wasn't long enough to arbitrarily take someone off pain meds. He undid the crazy-tight Ace bandage/wrap, and while it felt really good, I still had the feeling I was wearing a too-tight bra.
I was happy to discover I had boobettes!!!! We had discussed the fact that I am rather, er, flabby in my muscles, and he said this could be an advantage when it came to placing the TEs. Apparently it was! Fills will start after the first of the year.
The other good news was that despite the amount of daily drainage, he only leaves drains in for 2 weeks max. That means that my next appt on Monday will mean drain removal, AND - a shower the next day! WOOT!
Keeping Kim (kblack), Terry71, grateful33, and Denise (g8rDee) in my prayers as they go into surgery tomorrow!
-
So... I have a rash... right at my surgical site.. surgery postponed until January 4th. I am kind of ok with this because I was sick for 10 days after my last chemo and it set me back on getting things done prior to surgery (which was supposed to be tomorrow). I am going to keep checking in and will keep my eyes peeled for the January surgical group.
I am so happy to have found all of you and glad to read that overall everyone seems to be doing well after their surgery.
Keeping all of you in my thoughts and sending positive energy to everyone.
Denise

That is fabulous!

Greetings all.
Path report back. DCIS extensive; small area of IDC found. Glad I went with UMX when I did.
Meeting tomorrow with physical therapist and massage therapist. Love to know how to massage with drains.
-
g8rDee - sorry to hear that there will be more waiting for you. Good of you to look on the bright side and get some extra stuff done. Hope you are feeling better soon!
-
AussieKate... I'm so jealous you got your drains out today. Very happy for you, but jealous, hee hee. I had my first follow-up with my ps today. He said everything looks great. He's pleased at how I'm doing and even happier that the only time I take a pain pill is to sleep at night. My next appointment is Monday and I hope the drains come out then. No shower until the drains come out, wicked bummer. But I consider myself lucky to be doing so well.
I find that I get tired pretty easily but seeing that I'm only 5 days post-op that seems normal to me. The only thing I wish was better is getting out of bed. I just can't do it on my own no matter how elevated I keep my chest. Anyone else have this problem? Sometimes I feel like the expanders are going to come out of my eye sockets. I'm just afraid that's the way it is until they come out.
Goldlining... I didn't get any instructions like that. Sounds strange but I guess every place is different. My ps had me shower twice a day, starting 3 days prior to surgery, from neck to toe with Hibiclens. No mention was made of my hair only that I could use my regular shampoo, but shampooing wasn't a must as far as I know. I did have to shower the morning of surgery. And I did have a bonnet.
Good luck and best wishes to all the upcoming surgeries.
-
Goldlining.... I didn't shower from last Thursday and surgery was on Friday. I was told nothing. The reason I couldn't shower on Friday before the surgery was because the BS had done all the mark up lines and they went from my throat almost down to my belly button. Unfortunately even though he'd used a permanent marker, lots of the lines rubbed off during the night, so he re-drew them on Friday. Today (Weds) I have just had my first shower and washed my hair. So basically I didn't do any special washing at all. I found that strange, because my mother in law went in to have a cancerous mole removed from her leg and she had to thoroughly wash everything - even her hair - with this medicated solution on the morning of her op.
Well I can tell you, that now being day 5 post surgery, so far I haven't got any signs of infection or anything bad happening. I think they give you a pretty big wash down of the chest area in theatre, and you're right. It's not like they are cutting your head open, and yes you do get to wear a very pretty (not) paper cap.

Path report back and SN were negative and margins are clear. The only disturbing thing was that the tumor had grown so much. It was under 1 cm the first month I found it and had the biopsy, then the breast MRI 3 weeks later showed it at 1.6 cm, when taken out another 3 weeks later, it was 1.8 cm. Still good it was under 2 cm. So glad it is gone. I am still fatigued easily but not much pain execpt in my armpit incision and the bruising. The BS is worried about how much I bruised but I had forwarned him about it. He took out some stitches yesterday which was ouchy. He is going to let the onc decide if they want to test me for some sort of bleeding disorder. My onc appt is Jan 9. I had my sister cut off my long hair last night to send it off to have a hairpiece made from it. Chemo will be the next challenge.
Goldlining -As for showering,I had to shower and wash my hair the night before and the morning of surgery and had to use a special cleansing solution.
-
Ann Top, Welcome, sorry you had to join the club. I had my BMX Oct. 4th. Chose that route for the same reason you did and I definitely don't regret it. Good luck with your surgery.
-
I'm all set for my nipple/areola reconstruction on Dec. 15th. I'm almost more nervous now that before BMX or exchange. I can't wait to be done!!! Wishing all you gals still to go in December a smooth surgery and easy recovery.
-
add me to the list please - UMX left side no reconstruction on Dec 21. I'm hoping it won't be a whole lot worse than the lumpectomy with 7cm removed last month. Good luck to everyone with surgeries this month!
-
Welcome to a couple of new ladies on here. Sorry you've had to join us, but you've found a group of wonderful ladies.
pickychicky - My understanding is that a MX without recon is usually not too difficult. Hopefully it'll be very easy for you. I think there are ladies on here who've had a MX without recon, hopefully they will chime in.
-
pickychicky my mx last year (to the exact day) was 90 minutes from start to wake-up. Easier than lumpectomy in that there is nothing to jiggle to be painful when things are delicately healing. Worse than lumpectomy in that there is the Damned Drain for a while. Once the drain is out, much better. Also no fun is node removal, and the numbness under the arm. The drain will go bye-bye sooner if you keep movement to a dull roar while it's in. Nobody told me that until almost 2 weeks after. But with the drain just a distant memory (and ugly "bullet hole" scar), the mx was really a piece of cake for me.
I'm with CookieMonster having another mx and DIEP on Thursday. At least with that we get some inpatient days and some fussing over us. Two more sleeps.
-
Congratulations ladies on your clear path reports! I'm hoping mine will come in that way as well, and this will soon just be a distant memory!
-
Thanks ladies! I've got a call in to my surgeon. I want to make sure he understands that I will not have reconstruction, so want the scar area as flat as possible. I think I'm also going to ask if he'll do it as outpatient surgery since I'm not having the lymph dissection. Can you think of anything else I need to clarify? Was there anything that you wish you'd cleared up?
-
pickychicky, You should have no problem with day surg. I had two lymph nodes removed and I was home by 2pm.
-
Hi, everyone!
I am 5 days out from a bilateral mastectomy with tissue expander placement. I know everyone is different, but I am happy to report that the pain is minimal, and really more of a discomfort from the expanders than anything. I have 4 surgical drains which are very managable with a post-surgical camisole I purchased before surgery (covered by insurance, hopefully that's true for everyone) with built-in pockets for the drains. Today is my post-op appointment with the PS and tomorrow is my post-op with my breast surgeon. Tomorrow I will get my own pathology report. Fingers crossed that I can avoid chemo this time around!
Just wanted to share my experience for those who are still scheduled for this month. Wishes for a speedy recovery for all!
-
5timewinner: Glad your recovery is going well...so good to have it behind us isn't it? I am recovering quickly as well from a lumpectomy and SNB, and just hoping the path is clear so I won't have to have more surgery! I want to get on with my life! Too many dr. visits and too much waiting to suit me!
Praying for all that are due to have surgery that everything goes well!
-
5timewinner...My feeling of the expanders is the same I thnk. For me it's more of a pressure when I get up or bend over. I have a kind of heavy/full feeling near my armpits. I don't have as much discomfort getting up esp from bed but definitely know they are there. Had a followup with my ps and he said all of it is normal except that most people call my 'discomfort' pain. Huh? Maybe I'm just wonder woman!
Best wishes for all with upcoming surgery dates and speedy recoveries for those that have already had theirs.
-
Got my path report! See below, it's way better then they prepared me for.
I am so done with these stupid drains! Hubby's work is being horrible to him so prayers that he can get put on another project are much needed. All in all things are OK.
-
YAY for all the good final path reports!
Big prayers and good wishes for Judy (CookieMonster), Jo (brca1953), goldlining, brendaclee3, and Dru (Druanne) as they go into their surgeries tomorrow (Dec. 15th).
